“Police say suspected rebels have killed three Indian paramilitary soldiers in a highway ambush in the Indian portion of Kashmir.

Senior police officer Nitish Kumar says two attackers were killed by paramilitary soldiers who returned their fire Saturday on the outskirts of Srinagar, the main city in Indian Kashmir.

Several soldiers were wounded as one bus in the six-vehicle convoy came under attack by suspected rebels, said Nalin Prabhat, a senior officer of the Central Reserve Police Force.

Rebel groups fighting for Kashmir’s independence from India or its merger with neighboring Pakistan since 1989 often attack Indian government forces or other targets.

India accuses Pakistan of arming and training the rebels, a charge Islamabad denies.”

  11. Germany: EU Foreign Ministers call on Britain to hasten exit process

EU Foreign Ministers called on the government of the United Kingdom to begin the formal process of exiting the European Union as soon as possible, at a press conference held in Berlin, Saturday. The ministers from the six EU founder states called on the UK to immediately trigger the Article 50 clause which would precipitate negotiations on a British exit from the Union.

SOT, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, German Foreign Minister (German): “I think we have the chance to show the people and the members of the EU that Europe is necessary, not only necessary but also functioning. There are questions on which we still haven’t found a common answer: for example how to deal with refugees and immigration. There are questions that in some parts of Europe are more important than elsewhere, like youth unemployment. Jobs and growth are the two aspects where we have to find more common answers.”

SOT, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, German Foreign Minister (English): “We really hope that we can soon concentrate on European problems. This is also a message we send to London. We understand and respect the result and we understand that the UK has the right to decide on the UK’s affairs. But the responsibility of London goes beyond the UK borders. We have to be given the possibility now to deal with the future of Europe in this moment. This means that after the recent decision, also has to begin the process through which we can deal with the exit of the UK, more precisely the process according to Article 50. For this reason we say here together today that this process has to start as soon as possible. So that we are not stuck in a longer, traumatic, discussion and, instead, we concentrate on the future of Europe and the work that is to be done.”

SOT, Jean-Marc Ayrault, French Foreign Minister (French): “On the other hand, the British people have voted and we must respect their vote. And thus we’re asking for the European treaty to be respected and Article 50 of this treaty to be respected, it’s necessary for it to be implemented. Of course, a new Prime Minister must be chosen. But there is a certain urgency, why? Because it suits the interests of Britain and Europeans to avoid a period of uncertainty, which could have financial, economic, and political consequences. So we respect the UK, we respect the vote of the population – who are a great people – even if we regret it as well. However, we demand that the other 27 member states in Europe are respected also.”

    • Germany: Merkel discusses process for UK exit from EU

During a joint press conference with the head of Christian Social Union in Bavaria Horst Seehofer in Berlin, on Saturday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed the consequences of the UK’s referendum to leave the European Union.

SOT, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany (German): “Regarding the developments in the EU we all agreed that the decision in the UK certainly represents a break in the development of Europe. We all agreed that Great Britain will still remain a close partner especially because we are economic partners, because together in the NATO we guarantee our security and also because we are bound together in many other ways.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany (German): “We have to respect the decision of Great Britain. And we will deal with the necessary exit process in the EU according to the spirit of our prospective partnership but also in the knowledge that we are conducting an exit process. Great Britain has to say what kind of relationship they expect from the European Union in the future. And then, we, the 27 member states, have to decide if we can comply on these proposals and what our interests are.”

    • France: Hollande and Ban Ki Moon discuss Brexit in Paris

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon was in Paris, Saturday, to meet with French President Francois Hollande at the Elysee Palace. Among the topics discussed during the meeting were the consequences of the British referendum in favour of exiting the European Union.

¤SOT, Francois Hollande, French President (French): “Of course we discussed the British vote even if it has no effect on the place of the United Kingdom in the United Nations system. The UK is a permanent member of the Security Council. The UK has a diplomatic standing and the United Kingdom will continue as it always has done in seeking peace and solving the major problems in the world. But it is true that there the whole world now asks, ‘What’s going to happen now?'”

¤SOT, Francois Hollande, French President (French): “I deeply regret the British vote. I respect it because that is democracy, but, at the same time, we have to draw all the conclusions and all the consequences in the context of the European Union on the participation of the United Kingdom. We must now organise this separation and we must do it in good order, with the rules provided by the treaties, which must be implemented. But we also have to maintain relations with the UK, and this is what France will do, particularly economically; in terms of its relationship to the issue of migrants and refugees, and this will also be the case for defence.”

¤Ban Ki Moon SOT (French): “The United Nations will continue to work with the UK and the European Union, as two important partners. I count on the European Union and Great Britain to continue to be strong partners of the United Nations in development and humanitarian affairs and in the field of peace and security, and, notably, on matters of migration. The problems we face don’t stop at national borders. It is clear that when we work together, we are stronger.”

“Islamist militant group Abu Sayyaf released a Filipina hostage after nine months in captivity in the Philippines.

The terror group woke up Marites Flor at dawn Friday and dumped her outside the home of a local governor in Sulu, the military told CNN Philippines.

Her release comes after the militants beheaded two Canadian hostages who were captured with her in September at a resort.

The victims suffered constant abuse at the hands of their kidnappers, Flor said after she was freed.

“They treated us like dogs, like kids. They beat us up when we make mistakes,” she told the media.

One of the two hostages beheaded was her partner, Robert Hall, who was killed after the deadline passed for a ransom payment, the Philippines government said this month. His execution followed that of fellow Canadian John Ridsdel in April.

Flor, the two men and Norwegian national Kjartan Sekkingstad were seized at a resort off the coast of the southern island of Mindanao.

The three were visiting the resort’s marina on their yacht, and Sekkingstad was the manager of the property. Abu Sayyaf is still holding Sekkingstad.

The militant group had asked for $6.5 million in ransom per hostage to be paid by April 25.”

  14. jihad watch – Diplomat who pushed for Iran deal was paid by Boeing

A veteran U.S. diplomat who pushed for the nuclear deal with Iran, which allowed Boeing to sell $25 billion worth of planes to state-owned Iran Air, did not disclose that he was paid by Boeing during the time he advocated for the agreement, The Daily Beast reported Wednesday.

Thomas Pickering, a former ambassador to Russia, India, Israel, and the United Nations who served under Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, confirmed to The Daily Beast that he was an employee of the Boeing Corporation from 2001 to 2006, after which he continued his association with the company as a paid consultant until the end of 2015.

During the debate over the nuclear deal, Pickering testified before Congress, lobbied individual lawmakers, and published numerous articles promoting the deal. The Daily Beast could not find any records of him disclosing his ties to Boeing, a company that sought to benefit from the deal.

[…]An investigation by the Washington Free Beacon earlier this year revealed that Boeing had a team of 11 lobbyists to promote the deal. Boeing may have spent up to $4,956,000 on its broader lobbying efforts in the fourth quarter of 2015, according to its disclosure forms; one of the subjects it worked on was “U.S.-Iran Relations.”…

  15. France: Le Pen demands EU referendum after meeting Hollande, Sarkozy

Marine Le Pen, the leader of the far-right Front National, called for a referendum on France’s membership in the EU during a press conference outside the Palais d’Elysee, Paris, on Saturday.

SOT, Marine Le Pen, leader of the Front Nationale, (French): “What can I say to you…. We met the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister and the former Prime Minister to hear that they will not consider all the signs that have been there for several years already. Not only by the European people but of course, because it is the one that concerns me the most, by the French people. Even more since the decision of the British people to leave the EU. The EU’s vision that carries the President of the Republic is exactly the same today as it was Wednesday. It’s not a surprise. We called two elements that we consider essential in a democratic process. The first concern is the implementation of a referendum to ask the French people if they wish to remain in the EU, in particular taking into account that 11 years ago they refused the European constitution, and it had been imposed on them with the complicity of the UMP [Sarkozy’s former party] and PS [Socialist Party]. To this question of the implementation of a referendum, they just responded “No”. It’s like if we had used a dirty word. As if the people was definitely the last route of the carriage.”

SOT, Marine Le Pen, leader of the Front Nationale, (French): “I understand that some want the divorce to be as painful as possible, to avoid other people having the same idea and taking the same way as the British. It’s called chaos strategy and I think they will try to implement it. But if they implement it, they will create an even bigger gap between people and the European Union.”

Officer Shot In Delco; Officials ID Suspect Taken Into Custody

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Authorities say a suspect is in custody after a police officer was shot several times in Delaware County Friday morning. The suspect was identified as Donte Brooks Island. It took about three hours for upwards of 200 police to track down and arrest the alleged shooter. Three others were taken into custody, but they have not yet been charged. The main suspect, though, is well known to law enforcement.

Island, who also goes by the name Abdul Wahi, lives in the Folcroft Station Apartments where police caught him allegedly smoking weed and dealing drugs.

It happened around 10 a.m. on Baltimore Avenue near Elmwood Avenue in Folcroft while the officer was conducting a drug investigation behind an apartment complex.

Authorities say the 25-year-old officer, identified as Christopher Dorman, was shot at least six times in the face, back and leg, and transported to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital.

He was then airlifted to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in West Philadelphia.

Officials say Dorman is currently in critical, but stable condition.

“Thank God the officer was wearing his vest. It may have saved his life,” police said at an afternoon press conference. “His mother and father are here, they’re obviously upset,” said Folcroft Police Chief Robert Ruskowski.

Officer Dorman was with the department for a little over a year, authorities say.

“He’s a Folcroft resident. He is a Folcroft volunteer fireman, and then he became a police officer just a little over a year ago. He’s done nothing but serve his community constantly.”

The twins first chased their younger brother up to the rooftop of their family house and stabbed him multiple times. The young brother is currently in critical condition in the intensive care unit of a local hospital.

The suspects then approached their father and stabbed him multiple times before heading to their mother, who was in another room, the report said.

  22. Google, Facebook silently block Isis and other extremist videos

The companies using these automation systems refuse to discuss latest technique.

YouTube owned by Google and Facebook is using sophisticated technology to remove extremist content from their sites, according to a new report.

Reuters reports that although the companies have not admitted to the policy, sources say the technology exists to take down videos from a database of banned content and also identify new postings related to extremist actions such as beheading or an inciting violence speech.

The sources that revealed how the technology works did not discuss the technique nor how videos were initially identified as extremist. The system can catch attempts to re-post content already identified as unacceptable, but is unable to automatically block videos that have not yet been identified.

According to them the technology will be refined over time and more and more companies are set to adopt it. It was reportedly developed to identify and remove copyright-protected content on video sites.

The latest move comes as efforts by tech companies increase to try and block their social media platforms from being used as a tool for spreading extremism and planning terrorist attacks. An analysis of several attacks since last year, from Paris to Belgium had indicated platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram and Twitter are being used increasingly to spread extremist propaganda and even plan similar attacks. A lot of videos related to beheadings and inciting speeches were also available on YouTube and Facebook on closed groups.

Companies like Twitter have admitted blocking several pro-Isis accounts but these groups reportedly continued to function under pseudo names. For YouTube as well, even though several videos had been taken down they often re-appear from proxy accounts.

Now sources say, companies using these automation systems are not discussing the technique for fear terrorists may learn how to manipulate them.
