  1. Britain has voted to leave the European Union, the BBC said based on voter tallies from Thursday’s referendum, an outcome that would set the country on an uncertain path and deal the largest setback to European efforts to forge greater unity since World War Two.

World financial markets dived as counting from 304 of 382 areas showed a 51.5/48.5 split for leaving. Sterling suffered its biggest one-day fall of 9.4 percent against the dollar on market fears the decision will hit investment in the world’s 5th largest economy, raise questions over London’s role as a global financial capital, and usher in months of political limbo.

  2. Not sure of the significance, but an interesting datapoint.

Seven Indonesian sailors have been taken hostage in the Sulu Sea in the southern Philippines, Indonesia’s foreign minister said on Friday, the latest in a string of abductions in the waters between the two Southeast Asian neighbors.

Indonesian authorities have voiced concerns that piracy in the Sulu Sea area, a major sea traffic lane for the world’s top thermal coal exporter, could reach levels previously seen in Somalia.

    • That is a Moro region, their traditional sources of income are slave trade and piracy.

  3. Violence erupted between left-wing activists and police in Berlin on June 22 after authorities cleared squatters out of a building on Rigaer Strasse. Masked rioters left a “trail of destruction” in the streets according to German media.

Three cars were destroyed, fires lit in the streets and stones and paint bombs thrown at a district council office by a group of up to 200 activists according to Der Tagesspiegel, with clashes continuing from Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Why are we only learning about this now?

    • Because this can’t be spun to show patriotic Germans as the ones committing the violent acts.

  4. A number of developments within the Turkish political landscape, including increased restrictions on liberties, the media and the judiciary, in addition to rising violence amid anti-terror operations, constitute a threat to the country’s democratic institutions, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has warned in a freshly-adopted resolution.

Tightened restrictions on freedom of the media and freedom of expression, erosion of the rule of law and increasing human rights violations in the face of operations against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) “constitute a threat to the functioning of democratic institutions and the country’s [Turkey’s] commitments to its obligations towards the Council of Europe,” the resolution adopted on June 22 said.
A total of 96 delegates voted for the resolution, while 24 voted against and 10 others abstained. Of the 13 Turkish delegates, only two voted in support of the resolution.

In the text, PACE expressed concern over a controversial constitutional amendment to partially lift the immunities of lawmakers, opening the way for the trial of 152 legislators, mostly from the Kurdish problem-focused Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP).

  6. Please, let me be the first to say it in this context: FUCK Sinn Féin!!!

A UK exit from the EU in the context of Northern Ireland voting to Remain must prompt a poll on

Irish unity, Sinn Féin has demanded.

While the republican party claimed the referendum will have “massive ramifications on the nature of the British state”, given Scotland also voted Remain, the Democratic Unionists hailed the vote as set to deliver a bright future for Northern Ireland as part of an unshackled UK.

In Northern Ireland 440,707 (56%) people voted to Remain and 349,442 (44%) voted to Leave.

Of the region’s 18 constituencies, 11 voted Remain and seven voted Leave.

    • The EU is falling apart and the socialist in the Britisl Isles can’t see that or understand that this is a failure of socialism both in social policy and in economic impact on all involved. What people have to remember is that all of the groups that want to breakup any of the old European nations were founded and funded by the Soviet Union. World wide Marxism is still supporting the breakup of the old nation states because this will make it harder for any nation to survive outside of the EU. Well the EU is doomed, back in 2001 the euro was down around 75 cents US to the euro and the EU would have fallen apart if it hadn’t been for the 9/11/01 terror attacks. Now Europe is paying the price for not breaking up the EU back then when it would have been easier and there wouldn’t have been a massive social cost to the breakup.

Babur Karamat Raja, 41, repeatedly stabbed Natalie Queiroz in Sutton Coldfield town centre on 4 March.

A court heard the 40-year-old and her child were ultimately saved by the intervention of four passers-by.

Raja carried out the attack, his barrister said, because his mother “literally drove him mad” through her disapproval of the relationship.

Birmingham Crown Court was told that Raja stabbed Ms Queiroz, who was eight months pregnant, after being forced to choose between his conservative Muslim mother’s faith and the “love of his life”.

  15. Parvez Sharman is an interesting figure in that he’s a gay Muslim activist. The two identities, gay activist and Muslim, don’t go together two well. His DB piece is interesting in that it’s a standard liberal critique, except liberals don’t tend to critique Islam. And certainly not from the inside. There’s plenty to disagree with here. But also plenty of basic common sense.

  20. LAGUNA BEACH – A civil rights lawsuit filed last month by seven Muslim women claiming they were targeted and humiliated when forced to leave Urth Caffe by management is fraudulent, the owner of the Laguna Beach restaurant said in a counter-suit filed Wednesday.

“It is nothing short of an abuse of process to extort public apologies and other accommodations from my client, Urth Caffe,” said David Yerushalmi, co-founder and senior counsel for American Freedom Law Center, a national public interest law firm.

The cross-complaint filed in Orange County Superior Court alleges the lawsuit by the women is an abuse of process. The counter-suit accuses the women of trespassing at the cafe after being asked to leave.

Yerushalmi said in the suit that the restaurant staff was enforcing a policy that guests cannot exceed 45 minutes at a table without ordering when the cafe is busy. The women, who had pulled together three tables at the front patio, refused requests by cafe managers to share one table, or to move to the side of the patio or inside the restaurant, the lawsuit said.

  23. Exclusive: Good day for bad news? EU reveals new ‘migrant passport’ deal on referendum day (express, June 24, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/682887/EU-announces-migrant-passpost-on-EU-referendum-day

“AS ALL eyes were on the British referendum tonight members of the European Parliament quietly announced a new travel document allowing migrants from outside the EU to travel within the 28 member states.

They announced their new “European travel document” just four hours before the British referendum polling stations closed.

EU mandarins said the “harmonised document” aims to reduce the period during which those without valid identity documents are held in administrative detention.

According to a report issued in Brussels at 6.09pm BST the new “travel documents” will give non-EU nationals staying “irregularly” in EU member states the right to move around.

The proposals will go before the Civil Liberties Committee as soon as next week but the EU has declined to give a date.

And it will help migrants from countries like Turkey, Syria, Egypt and others to enter the EU with ease as the migrant crisis continues to wreak havoc.

The document says: “A new standard European travel document to speed the return of non-EU nationals staying “irregularly” in EU member states without valid passports or identity cards was informally agreed by MEPs and EU ministers on Thursday evening.

“A key goal during the talks has been to increase third countries acceptance of the document through improved technical details. To enter into force, this informal deal needs to be formally endorsed by the full Parliament and the Council of Ministers.

“The new regulation will produce a common format for the European travel document.

“Its technical details would include personal information, such as name, age, gender and distinguishing marks, as well as a passport photograph, in order to combat

    counterfeiting and falsification.”

According to the announcement the Parliament also negotiated clear references in the new regulation to respect for international law, the Charter of fundamental rights, and the rights of the Child…”

        • Yup, and a very large percent of those receiving the papers will be trained fighters/warriors. 25. Bulgarian President Rossen Plevneliev said yesterday (23 June) that if the EU collapsed following Brexit, there would be war. He made the comments in the presence of his German colleague, Joachim Gauck, who is on a 3-day visit to Bulgaria.

Speaking to a students’ audience, Plevneliev and Gauck expressed hopes that British citizens would vote to remain in the EU. But when asked if a Leave vote could be a signal of the EU’s disintegration, Plevneliev said that if the EU collapses, there will be war.

“If the EU disintegrates, there will be war, because after two bloody wars the only working formula to avoid war was the EU. The only way is that integration prevails, and if there is no integration and cooperation, I am sure, there will be war in Europe,” Plevneliev said.

  26. Fuck Soros!!! That old vampire does not deserve to breathe!

Innvestor George Soros has issued a stark warning to Britain: If its voters choose to leave the European Union, powerful speculative forces could cause the pound to crash by more than 20%.

“Too many believe that a vote to leave the EU will have no effect on their personal financial position,” Soros wrote in The Guardian. “This is wishful thinking.”

Soros said that his warning was based on “six decades of experience in financial markets,” including a massive speculative bet against the pound in 1992 that earned him a reputation as “The Man Who Broke the Bank of England.

    http://beforeitsnews.com/blogging-citizen-journalism/2016/06/brexit-soros-warns-of-black-friday-if-britain-leaves-eu-2540862.html

        • More then he admitted. And he made a lot over the exit vote, he knew the markets would tank no matter which way the vote went and he sold short. With the markets down so much he has made a fortune.

    • If/when the crash comes the cause will be the Marxist economic and financial policies of the leftist controlled governments, not because Britain declared Independence.

FYI: Soros was predicting a major crash and selling short a few weeks before the vote, he is just using the vote to cover for the failure of Socialism.

  27. Recently, a 20-year-old Austrian woman waiting at a bus stop in Vienna was attacked, beaten, and robbed by four Muslim men from Afghanistan. From her statement:

[One attacker] started [by] putting his hands through my hair and made it clear that in his cultural background there were hardly any blonde women.

So how did Austrian police respond? They told the victim to dye her hair:

At first I was scared, but now I’m more angry than anything. After the attack they told me that women shouldn’t be alone on the streets after 8:00 pm. And they also gave me other advice, telling me I should dye my hair dark and also not dress in such a provocative way.

Indirectly that means I was partly to blame for what happened to me. That is a massive insult.

She is not the first European victim of Muslim attackers to be blamed. According to FrontPage Magazine editor Jamie Glazov:

  29. ISIS calls for attacks in Berlin and Brussels to ‘paralyse’ Europe in wake of Brexit chaos

Islamic State has expressed its delight for the expected negative economic impact on the United Kingdom and the European Union following the British referendum – and called for attacks in Berlin and Brussels to “paralyse” Europe.

A jihadi Telegram – an encrypted messaging service popular with militants – praised the economic chaos that came in the wake of the EU Referendum and urged followers to strike at the heart of mainland Europe, according to terror threat monitor Site.

UK military chiefs have warned there is a “serious and direct threat to holiday resorts across Europe'”from groups like ISIS.

  30. Dutch anti-immigrant party chief urges ‘Nexit’ referendum for Netherlands

BUDAPEST (Reuters) – The Netherlands should hold its own referendum on whether to leave the European Union following Britain’s vote in favor of exiting the bloc, the leader of the Dutch anti-immigrant PVV party, Geert Wilders, said on Friday.

Wilders’ Eurosceptical party is leading opinion polls in the Netherlands, one of the six founder nations of what has become the EU, ahead of a parliamentary election expected next March.

“I congratulate the British people for beating the political elite in both London and Brussels and I think we can do the same,” Wilders told Reuters in an interview.

“The Dutch would like to be in charge again of their own budget, their national borders and their immigration policy.”

“We should have a referendum about a ‘Nexit’ as soon as possible.”

On Thursday Britons voted to leave the 28-nation EU, forcing the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron and dealing the biggest blow to the European project of greater unity since World War Two.

Wilders said he expected several other countries to hold plebiscites of their own, adding that the EU’s efforts to forge a political union were doomed but that the countries of Europe needed to preserve economic cooperation.

    • Belgium: ‘Is this the end of the EU?’ – Juncker answers ‘No’ before abrupt exit

    • Turkey warns of rising European xenophobia after Brexit vote

Europe’s politicians are failing to combat rising xenophobia and anti-immigrant views, Turkish officials said on Friday, after Britain’s vote to exit the European Union deprived Turkey of what had been a major backer in its quest for EU membership.

The Brexit campaign and the rise of Europe’s populist right have cast further doubt over Turkey’s decade-long accession negotiations, a process which was in its early years an anchor for economic and social reforms in the country.

“The fragmentation of the EU has started. Britain was the first to abandon ship,” Deputy Prime Minister Nurettin Canikli wrote on Twitter.

Turkey’s EU Affairs Minister Omer Celik said the British campaign had been marred by Islamophobia and anti-Turkish sentiment fuelled by mainstream politicians.

The “Out” campaign played on voters’ fears about immigration by warning of dire consequences if Turkey, a largely Muslim nation of 79 million, joined the EU. Ankara was particularly angered by the response of Prime Minister David Cameron, once a staunch advocate of Turkish accession to the EU, who joked that it would not happen until the year 3000.

“This has been a worrying process … in which mainstream politicians relied on the far right’s rhetoric too much,” Celik told a news conference.

Turkey began EU accession talks in 2005 but has made scant progress despite an initial burst of reforms. Many EU states are not eager to see such a large, mostly Muslim country as a member, and are concerned that Ankara’s record on basic freedoms has gone into reverse in recent years.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said the EU needed to reflect carefully on the British vote and to embrace more inclusive policies. His foreign minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, said the EU’s enlargement and integration policies had been a failure.

But trade ties are likely to remain strong between Turkey and both Britain and the EU.

Britain was Turkey’s second-biggest market in 2015, with $10.5 billion worth of exports and total trade volume of $16 billion. Economy Minister Nihat Zeybekci said Turkey would continue to take steps to maintain and strengthen investment, foreign trade and financial relations with Britain.

“ISTANBUL – After the vote on Brexit, the EU ”should abandon its approach drawing it further away from other countries in the region, seeking a more inclusive vision”, Turkish Premier Yildirim said Friday, also condemning ”Cameron’s campaign against Turkey” ahead of the referendum.

”To Cameron, who was giving a date (for Turkey’s EU membership), Britons gave a date” for him to step down, said Yildirim, recalling that the British premier ruled out Ankara’s membership for decades.

”The EU’s disintegration process has started. Great Britain is the first to abandon ship”, Ankara’s deputy premier, Nurettin Canilki, wrote on Twitter earlier.

On the eve of the vote, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke about a referendum in Turkey as well to decide whether to continue EU membership talks that started in 2005.”

  31. YANGON, June 24 (Reuters) – A group of men from a village in central Myanmar destroyed a mosque in the first serious outburst of inter-religious violence in months, coinciding with a rise in tensions over how to refer to the Rohingya, the country’s persecuted Muslim minority.

Villagers from Thayethamin, a remote settlement a two-hours’ drive northeast of Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon, destroyed the mosque on Thursday after a dispute over its construction, and beat up at least one Muslim man, media and a police spokesman said.

Religious tensions simmered in Myanmar for almost half a century of military rule, before boiling over in 2012, just a year after a semi-civilian government took power.

  32. Turkey’s parliament has granted immunity from prosecution to members of the armed forces conducting counter-terrorism operations as security forces battle Kurdish militants in fighting that has killed thousands in the past year.

The law, passed late on Thursday, gives expansive powers to the military as it tries to stamp out an insurgency by the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) after last year’s collapse of a two-year ceasefire.

Before becoming president in 2014, Tayyip Erdogan spent much of his rule as prime minister building up civilian oversight of the military. Critics say the new law undoes some of those reforms.

The legislation could make it harder to investigate allegations of rights abuses. The United Nations and human rights groups have raised concerns about such violations during the last year of operations that have been centred in densely populated cities. Hundreds of civilians have been killed, according to opposition parties.
