  1. American art student sexually assaulted on Paris Metro

As she stepped onto the escalator at the station “the man went behind her, lowered his trousers, before penetrating her using his fingers,” a police source told BFM TV.

The incident has been classed as “rape” in France, becasue the definition of the crime includes penetration by digits, rather than just the penis, as is the case in the UK.

“… A tiny trickle of Syrian and Iraqi refugees is being admitted into Macedonia at the Idomeni crossing on the border with Greece, as more than 11,000 remain camped around waiting for their turn.

Greek police say Macedonian authorities let in 320 people in the 24 hours to 6 a.m. Friday. A few dozen were being admitted later in the day.

Hundreds of brightly-colored tents cover the muddy ground around an overflowing official camp at Idomeni, stretching almost right up to the border.

Syrian Saswat Estif, 26, has been there for 15 days, waiting patiently as others jumped the queue to enter Macedonia.

    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/police-killed-car-bomb-attack-southeast-turkey-37388648

“Kurdish rebels on Friday detonated a car bomb near a police station in southeastern Turkey, killing two police officers and wounding some 35 people, officials said.

The attack targeted the traffic police station and lodgings in the town of Nusaybin, bordering Syria, where the security forces are battling militants linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.

A fragile two-year-old peace process between Turkey’s government and the PKK collapsed in July, reviving a three-decades-old conflict that has killed tens of thousands of people. Hundreds — many of them police and soldiers — have died in the renewed fighting.

The governor’s office for Mardin province, where Nusaybin is located, said the explosion wounded 35 people, most of them police or police family members. Four of them were being operated on, although their injuries were not life-threatening condition.

The explosion caused extensive damage to the police lodgings and left a large crater in the road, images published by the private Dogan news agency showed.

  11. Migrants ‘posing’ as CHILDREN to enter Britain and ‘cheat the asylum system’ (express, Mar 4, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/649623/Asylum-system-cheated-migrants-posing-children-slip-Britain-claims-MP

“MIGRANTS are cheating the asylum system by posing as children to slip into Britain, an MP warned tonight.

Tory backbencher David Davies called for compulsory age checks on asylum seekers claiming to be unaccompanied youngsters aged under 18 to close a potential loophole in the country’s border controls.

He raised the issue after obtaining figures showing that the numbers of unaccompanied asylum seeking children accepted into the UK has nearly doubled while the number of age checks has fallen.

His warning came as new official data showed the number of migrants claiming asylum in the UK as a proportion of the population has reached the highest level of 11 years.

Mr Davies said: “Many asylum seekers who are claiming to be under 18 are actually adults.

“They deliberately claim to be under 18 because it makes it much harder for the authorities to reject their claims and throw them out. They also receive more money.

“It is very easy to find out someone’s age to within a few months with a dental check but not enough claimants are challenged.

“The figures I have obtained from the Government show that a high proportion have been lying about their age.”

Figures released by the Home Office in response to a Commons Written Question from Mr Davies showed that the number of asylum applications made by migrants claiming to be unaccompanied children rose from 1,028 in 2012 to 1,858 in 2014.

Over the same period, the number of asylum claims with a disputed age fell from 337 to 318.

Other Home Office figures showed that 65% of asylum seekers in disputed cases whose age was assessed were found to be over 18.

Mr Davies said border officials told him of men with grey beards or advanced tooth decay who claimed to be children when making asylum applications.

“We need to carry out tests on any asylum seeker claiming to be under 18 and make clear that anyone making a fraudulent claim will be deported,” the Monmouth MP said.

“It is clear from the government’s own figures that large numbers of adult males are now claiming to be under the age.”

Mr Davies also feared genuine child asylum seekers in care accommodation could be at risk of assault or sex abuse from adults posing as children.

“I dealt with the case of one man who was put into a home with young children before carrying out an violent attack on one of his carers,” the MP said…..”

“A deep network of underground tunnels have been uncovered in Iraq, revealing how ISIS have been carefully maintaining escape routes for its fighters as they try to avoid coalition airstrikes.

The tunnels were discovered by Kurdish forces when the Peshmerga managed to re-take the Yazidi majority town of Sinjar last December.

Burrowing deep into the ground, some of the chambers are thought to be 30 feet deep, allowing ISIS fighters to hide out and move freely out of the way of airstrikes.

Although 70 tunnels have been uncovered, Kurdish and Iraqi forces remain concerned that more secret layers may have been constructed in other parts of the town.

‘There is a tunnel under every alley, street and public building that remains intact,’ Wais Faiq, head of Sinjar town council told the International Business Times….”

  15. North Korean leader wants nukes ready to fly

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered nuclear weapons to be readied for use, the state-controlled Korean Central News Agency reported Thursday.

The shift in military posture would allow North Korea to carry out pre-emptive attacks, and deprive “the enemies to sleep in peace till the moment they meet their final end in their land,” KCNA reported, citing a speech by the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un.

KCNA continued: “The only way for defending the sovereignty of our nation and its right to existence under the present extreme situation is to bolster up nuclear force both in quality and quantity and keep balance of forces,” he said, stressing the need to “get the nuclear warheads deployed for national defense always on standby so as to be fired any moment.”

The move follows the U.N. Security Council’s unanimous approval Wednesday of tough new sanctions against North Korea in response to its recent nuclear and long-range missile tests. The resolution contains the toughest set of sanctions imposed by the Security Council in more than two decades, Secretary of State John Kerry said.

He also says that there is a good chance that if the internal crisis strengthens there is a good chance Kim will order some type of limited incursion into South Korea or a large scale terror attack. The man also said that the US should work with Japan and South Korea to stop Kim and ignore China.

  16. Japan PM suspends work on U.S. base on Okinawa

TOKYO – Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Friday he has decided to temporarily suspend preliminary work on moving a U.S. Marine Corps base on Okinawa and will resume talks on the contentious relocation plan.

The central government and Okinawa’s prefectural government have been locked in a legal battle over relocating the base, with both sides suing the other.

Abe said that his government is accepting a court proposal not to force the reclamation work over Okinawa’s objections. The court in February made the proposal as an interim step allowing talks. Details of the proposal were not made public.

The sudden reversal of his policy to continue with the reclamation work is seen as a vote-buying attempt ahead of this summer’s parliamentary elections.

Okinawa Gov. Takeshi Onaga last year issued an order to suspend permission for the reclamation work. Then the central government sued to reverse the order, to which Okinawa counter-sued, seeking a court injunction.

  17. Clinton Takes Aim at Another Government Watchdog
    141 Mar 4, 2016 6:00 AM EST
    By Josh Rogin

The Hillary Clinton campaign has gone on the attack against the government official who conducts oversight of the State Department she used to run, accusing him of partisanship and misconduct without any direct evidence. That strategy could backfire by politicizing the role of the government’s inspectors general and undermining needed State Department reforms.

This is not the first time Team Clinton has accused a federal inspector general of trying to foil her presidential ambitions. In January, the campaign publicly accused the inspector general of the intelligence community of acting in concert with two Republican senators to leak details of now-classified information found on her private e-mail server. This week, the Clinton campaign set its sights on Steve Linick, who has served as the State Department’s inspector general since 2013.

Linick has never been regarded as a partisan official. President Barack Obama appointed him as the State Department IG and the Senate confirmed him. Before that appointment, the role had remained unfilled for more than 5 years and there was only an “acting” IG at state the entire time Clinton was secretary, a career foreign service officer.

The latest gloomy news from Brazil was no surprise, but the severity underlined the depth of problems facing President Dilma Rousseff’s government as it battles both declining economic output and 10.67 percent inflation.

The state statistics office said 2015 registered the worst single annual fall in GDP since 1990, a year when the economy dipped 4.3 percent.

With the International Monetary Fund predicting a further 3.5 percent shrinkage this year, Brazil appears to be well into a recession that would be worse than any on government record going back to 1901.

  19. EU referendum: German Finance Minister says UK would be shut out of European single market in event of a Brexit

The two most powerful nations on the European continent have issued dark warnings about the consequences for Britain – and for Europe – if the UK votes to leave the EU.

The French President, François Hollande, said Brexit would inevitably have some impact on his country’s willingness to stop illegal migrants from crossing the English Channel. The German Finance Minister, Wolfgang Schäuble, argued that Brexit would make the whole of Europe “less stable and more volatile”, adding that Britain would be shut out of the single market if it left the EU.

Their interventions provided a boost for David Cameron, who is facing fierce opposition to his pleas for Britain to stay in the EU from nearly 130 of his MPs and the majority of Tory activists.

U.S. senators urge Obama to push for female U.N. Secretary-General

UNITED NATIONS/WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Seven U.S. women senators urged President Barack Obama on Thursday to push for the election of the United Nations’ first female secretary-general later this year.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, a former South Korean foreign minister, is due to step down at the end of 2016 after two five-year terms. A man has held the top job at the world organization since its inception 70 years ago.

The 15-member Security Council, including veto powers China, Russia, the United States, Britain and France, will recommend a candidate for election by the 193-member General Assembly to succeed Ban.

“We ask that the United States play a leading role in pressing for the strong consideration of qualified women,” the seven Democratic senators wrote to Obama.

Led by Barbara Boxer, a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the letter was also signed by senators Patty Murray, Mazie Hirono, Tammy Baldwin, Kirsten Gillibrand, Jeanne Shaheen and Barbara Mikulski.

In response to the senators’ letter, a senior Obama administration official said: “While we would welcome the selection of a woman as the next Secretary-General, we will ultimately support the best candidate of either gender.”

  23. Europe leaders tell Putin Syria truce must hold to spur peace talks: Cameron

LONDON (Reuters) – European leaders told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday that a fragile truce in Syria must be used to try to secure a lasting peace without President Bashar al-Assad, the spokeswoman for British Prime Minister David Cameron said.

Cameron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi told Putin in a phone call that the cessation of hostilities must hold to try to settle a conflict that has killed more than 250,000 people and created a refugee crisis.

“The main point that the European leaders made on the call to Putin was that we welcome the fact that this fragile truce appears to be holding,” the spokeswoman told reporters.

“(And) we have got to use this as a positive dynamic now to create some momentum behind the talks … so we can move from a truce into a more lasting, durable peace with a political transition away from Assad.”

Asked how Putin had responded, the spokeswoman said there was no detailed discussion on the Syrian president.

“We all know this is one of the trickiest points,” she said, adding that Cameron “underlined the importance of a transition away from Assad to a government that … can be fully representative of communities across Syria.”

“Gunmen in southern Yemen on Friday stormed a retirement home run by a charity established by Mother Teresa, killing 16 people, including four Catholic nuns, officials and witnesses said.

The killing spree began with two gunmen who first surrounded the home for the elderly in Aden. Meanwhile, four others entered the building on the pretext they wanted to visit their mothers at the facility, according to the charity, Yemeni security officials and witnesses. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

  27. BAHRAIN – “Finger” Al-Hammadi Gave to Nasser bin Hamad Costed him his Job

Bahrain Mirror: The King of Bahrain Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa dismissed on Friday (March 4, 2016) the Minister of Information Affairs and Minister of Parliament Affairs Isa Al-Hammadi from all his duties and appointed two ministers in his place.

This royal step wasn’t shocking as a picture was circulated on social media, which Al-Hammadi had sent to a Whatsapp chat group, including Information Affairs Authority officials. The picture shows a rude sign given to a sports event sponsored by the king’s son Nasser bin Hamad, entitled “Go Sports”.

An account with an alias posted the story behind the picture on Twitter, stating that “the minister along with a group of friends were riding bicycles through the streets of Bahrain, when they saw the “Go Sports” event name printed on the ground, so they took a picture of them giving the middle finger (a rude sign) while showing the name of the event that is sponsored by the king’s son Nasser bin Hamad.”

The circulated photo shows that Al-Hammadi himself replaced the Whatsapp chat group profile picture from “Here is Bahrain” with the insulting picture.

Mocking the “former” minister that hasn’t yet commented on the issue, Tweeters launched #Shame_on_you_minister and #The_Chubby_Finger hashtags.
