Al Shabaab often carries out such suicide attacks in the capital and elsewhere in its bid to topple Somalia’s Western- backed government. The group wants to impose its strict version of Islamic rule in the Horn of Africa nation….”

  2. Migrant crisis: Greece needs EU help to avoid chaos, says Merkel (BBC, Feb 29, 2016)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35684093

“Europe cannot allow Greece to fall into “chaos”, German Chancellor Angela Merkel says, amid sharp divisions among members over the migrant crisis.

Austria and several Balkan countries have introduced restrictions stranding migrants in Greece.
Mrs Merkel said EU nations had not battled to keep Greece in the euro just to leave it “in the lurch”.

She also defended her decision to open German borders to migrants, despite a resulting slump in her popularity…”

    • I don’t care what anyone does Greece and the rest of Europe are headed to total chaos, and are not just headed there but are sprinting there.

  3. ‘I will do my damn duty’ on refugees, says Merkel (thelocal, Feb 29, 2016)
    http://www.thelocal.de/20160229/i-will-do-my-damn-duty-on-refugees-says-merkel

“Chancellor Angela Merkel insisted that her chosen course in Germany and Europe’s refugee crisis was the right one in a TV interview on Sunday night, despite admitting to moments of doubt.

“My damn duty and obligation consists of finding a collective way for this Europe [to address the crisis]” Merkel told presenter Anne Will in her second appearance on the Sunday night talk show in five months.

While she admitted to being pressed hard on some issues – “you at least haven’t given me an easy time of it,” she told Will at the close of the conversation – the Chancellor appeared much more relaxed and confident than during her last live interview in October.

When Merkel was confronted with the angry mobs that have opposed refugees arriving in their towns and even abetted arson against asylum housing in recent weeks, she reminded viewers of the German Constitution’s most sacred principle that “human dignity is inviolable”.

“These are citizens who are doing something that I deeply reject,” she said – although she was happy to discuss people’s fears if they remained peaceful and were prepared to listen.

That earned her strong applause from the studio audience….”

    • The Constitutions of the Western Nations aren’t suicide pacts no matter how much the left tries to make them ones. Any group of “immigrants” that are refusing to assimilate and are insisting on policies that are leading to the destruction of the nation can and should be removed. Also all politicians that are aiding and abetting the “immigrants” to destroy the host nation should be tried for treason.

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-02-29/europe-s-refugee-crisis-rages-as-governments-fumble-four-charts

“European Union countries are ever-more at odds over how to deal with thousands of refugees fleeing the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Some 110,000 people have crossed the sea to Greece, Italy and Spain in the first two months of this year, after about a million made the journey in 2015.

The EU’s 28 governments are as far apart as ever from a common stance on how to cope with the crisis.

Leaders meet on March 7 to seek solutions. That could include pressing Turkey to do more to stop refugees leaving in the first place, helping Greece manage arrivals, and kicking life into a moribund plan to disperse migrants in the bloc. The following charts illustrate a crisis that’s far from over:

    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/648269/Hungary-plan-fence-border-Romania-migrants-refugees-crisis-Viktor-Orban-Schengen

“HUNGARY is set to split Europe in two by building a huge network of fences along its entire southern border in a desperate bid to stop the flow of illegal immigrants.

No-nonsense prime minister Viktor Orban today announced plans to construct an enormous 280-mile long razor wire barrier which will completely seal his country off from southern Europe.

The fence will join up with those currently deployed along Hungary’s borders with Serbia and Croatia to create an impregnable barrier to migrants headed north towards Germany and Scandinavia.

Mr Orban has styled himself as a defender of Christian Europe, repeatedly ignoring pleas from European Union (EU) bureaucrats to open up his country’s borders to millions of migrants.

He insists that Hungary is protecting the rest of the continent from the refugee flow by building a shield which will deter migrants from making the journey. ….”

  7. MoD: 57 militants killed in latest counter-terrorism operations (khaama, Feb 29, 2016)
    http://www.khaama.com/mod-57-taliban-militants-killed-in-faryab-and-baghlan-operations-0208

“At least 57 anti-government armed militants were killed during counter-terrorism operations led by Afghan National Army (ANA) forces in the latest crackdown on militant groups, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said.

The operations were conducted in the past 24 hours in Faryab and Baghlan provinces where the militants are actively operating in a number of its districts.

Providing operational update of the ongoing counter-terrorism operations, the Ministry of Defense (MoD), said at least 30 militants, including the group’s commander were killed and 10 others were wounded in Pashtunkot district of Faryab.

A statement by MoD said at at least 5 militants were killed in Dasht-e-Archi district of Kunduz, while 3 others were killed and one was injured in Charchino district of Uruzgan.

The statement further added that 22 militants were killed, 7 were injured and 18 posts belonging to the militants were destroyed during the operations in Dand-e-Ghori district of Baghlan.

At least 3 militants were killed in separate operations in Kandahar and Nangarhar provinces, MoD said, adding that various types of weapon, ammunition and explosives were confiscated.
The anti-government armed militant groups have not commented regarding the ongoing operations so far.”

      http://www.khaama.com/senior-isis-commanders-among-7-killed-in-nangarhar-drone-strike-0207

“At least seven militants affiliated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group were killed in an airstrike in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

According to the local security officials, the airstrike was carried out by the coalition forces in Achin district, using an unmanned aerial vehicle.

Provincial police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashriqwal said the loyalists of the terror group were targeted in Mamand Dara and Pekha areas of Achin late on Sunday afternoon.

He said two prominent commanders of the terror group were among those killed which included a number of the foreign militants as well.

The drone strike by coalition forces comes amid ongoing military operation by the Afghan national security forces in Achin and Nazian districts, being conducted under the name of Shaheen-18.

The US Forces in Afghanistan have increased air campaign against the terror group in this province, carrying at least 20 airstrikes between late January and early February.

According to reports emerging earlier this month, the US forces in Afghanistan carried out at least 20 airstrikes targeting the loyalists of the terror group in a period of three months from late January to early February.

The coalition officials estimate around 1,000 to 3,000 Islamic State fighters are stationed in in eastern Afghanistan and are trying to establish a base of operations in the rugged mountains of Nangahar Province.”

  8. Blair’s lethal lies over Iraq exposed: Devastating book reveals ex-PM repeatedly deceived Cabinet and cost lives by refusing to let top brass order vital kit (dailymail, Feb 29, 2016)

“The devastating truth about how Tony Blair’s ‘deceit’ over Iraq cost British troops their lives is laid bare today.

An explosive new book – based on exclusive interviews with military chiefs, civil servants and Cabinet ministers – reveals Mr Blair decided early in 2002 on the need for ‘regime change’ to tackle Saddam Hussein.

But he froze out, or kept in the dark, his Chief of Defence Staff, Cabinet Secretary, Foreign Secretary, Defence Secretary and most of the Cabinet.

The former Prime Minister’s deception means the military were refused permission to begin proper planning because he was pretending to be an ‘honest broker’ seeking a peaceful solution.

As a result, British soldiers died because of a lack of sufficient body armour and equipment when the war began. The Chief of the Defence Staff, Admiral Sir Mike Boyce, warned the then PM that his position was ‘crazy’, but Mr Blair told him: ‘Well, that’s how it is.’

Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon also appealed to Mr Blair, saying: ‘We need to order machine-guns, body armour and other equipment.’

‘No,’ he replied. ‘I’ve got to keep the UN negotiations [with Saddam over allowing weapons inspectors to enter Iraq] going and I can’t act as (an) honest broker if it’s clear we’re planning to go to war.’

The extraordinary story of how Mr Blair dragged Britain to war in Iraq is detailed in a biography by acclaimed investigative journalist Tom Bower, serialised in the Mail this week…”

    • Migrants break down Macedonia fence on Greek border (BBC, video, Feb 29, 2016)
      http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35687257

“A crowd of migrants has broken down a barbed-wire fence on the Macedonia-Greece border using a steel pole as a battering ram.

TV footage showed migrants pushing against the fence at Idomeni, ripping away barbed wire, as Macedonian police let off tear gas to force them away.

A section of fence was smashed open with the battering ram. It is not clear whether any migrants got through.

Many of those trying to reach northern Europe are Syrian and Iraqi refugees.

About 6,500 people are stuck on the Greek side of the border, as Macedonia is letting very few in. Many have been camping in squalid conditions for a week or more, with little food or medical help.

The chaos on Monday erupted at a gate festooned with barbed wire, keeping migrants away from a railway line.

The protesters shouted “Open the border!” and threw stones at Macedonian police, who responded by firing rounds of tear gas to prevent them from getting through.

Macedonia and some other Balkan countries have erected fences in an attempt to reduce the influx of migrants, after more than a million reached Germany last year.

Greece is angry with Austria for having imposed a cap on migrant numbers. The crisis has left Greece shouldering much of the burden of housing migrants arriving in the EU from Turkey.

Many are refugees fleeing war in the Middle East, while others are escaping human rights abuses in Afghanistan, Eritrea and other conflict zones…”

  10. Mexico issues alert after theft of radioactive material

Five Mexican states were put on alert Sunday after a truck carrying a container of potentially dangerous radioactive material was stolen, the interior ministry said.

The National Coordination of Civil Protection issued the warning after a company in the central state of Queretaro reported that a pick-up truck carrying radioactive iridium-192 had been stolen.

The ministry said the material “can be dangerous for people if not handled safely” and could cause “permanent or serious injury to a person who is handling or in contact with it for a short time”.

Such damage could occur after contact lasting anywhere from minutes to hours, it added.

Officials said the radioactive material represented a significant health risk if taken outside its container, but was not dangerous if kept sealed.

  11. Scientists develop Matrix-style technique of ‘feeding’ information directly into your br

Brain boffins have been working on the development of sci-fi tech that could make learning easy as having a sleep in future

Anyone who has ever watched a sci-fi film and wished they could upload information to their brain in seconds could be in luck.

Scientists have developed a way of amplifying learning in a way that almost mimics the methods used in The Matrix.

In the film, Neo – played by Keanu Reeves – has a range of kung-fu skills ‘uploaded’ directly into his brain in just a few seconds.

Experts working at the HRL Information and System Sciences Laboratory in California, have been able to do the same thing, albeit on a lesser scale.

  12. Syrian opposition says government wrecking truce deal

BEIRUT/GENEVA (Reuters) – A senior official from Syria’s main opposition group said on Monday that the first major attempt to halt the fighting after nearly five years of war was in danger of total collapse because of attacks by government forces.

The cessation of hostilities drawn up by the United States and Russia, faced “complete nullification” because Syrian government attacks were violating the agreement, the official of the Saudi-backed opposition High Negotiations Committee (HNC) said.

France said there were reports of attacks on opposition forces in breach of the deal, which came into force on Saturday, and countries backing the Syria peace process would meet later on Monday to try to clarify the situation.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the pause in the fighting was largely holding, despite some incidents that he hoped would be contained. The Kremlin said the process was under way, although it had always been clear it would not be easy.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the cessation was largely holding with casualties greatly reduced compared to before the agreement took effect.

  13. NATO chief says concerned about Russian military build-up in Syria

KUWAIT (Reuters) – NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Monday that a fragile truce in Syria appeared to be largely holding but the alliance was concerned by a Russian military build-up in Syria.

France, though, said it had information about fresh attacks on zones held by moderate rebels, and called for an immediate meeting of the Syria task force to address breaches of the cessation of hostilities that came into force on Friday.

The cessation of hostilities deal is the first of its kind to be attempted in four years. Syria’s conflict began in 2011.

Stoltenberg told a news conference in the Gulf Arab state of Kuwait: “We have seen some encouraging developments that the ceasefire is largely holding but at the same time we have seen some reports about violations of the ceasefire.

“This agreement and the full implementation of the agreement is the best possible basis for renewing the efforts to find a political negotiated peaceful solution to the crisis in Syria,” he added.

The deal, which is less binding than a formal ceasefire and was not directly signed by Syria’s warring government and rebel forces, does not cover action against militants from Islamic State or the Nusra Front, an al Qaeda affiliate.

    • Neither side really wants any type of peace besides a clear cut victory, the various parties pushing the peace talks should know this but are instead acting like the talks will achieve something besides giving the various combatants time to catch their breaths and rearm.

    • What is really making him sweat bullets is that Obama has cut the US military so much and will probably back Turkey when the shooting starts. We really don’t want to fight Russia with our forces this low.

  14. Macedonian police fire tear gas on migrants storming Greek border

IDOMENI, Greece (Reuters) – Macedonian police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of migrants and refugees who stormed the border from Greece on Monday, tearing down a gate as frustrations boiled over at restrictions imposed on people moving through the Balkans.

A Reuters witness said Macedonian police fired several rounds of tear gas into crowds who tore down the metal gate and onto a railway line where migrants sat refusing to move, demanding to cross into the country.

There were an estimated 8,000 people gathered at Idomeni, the small frontier community on Greece’s border with Macedonia. Most were Syrians and Iraqis.

Earlier on Monday, a crush had developed along the frontier after rumors spread that Macedonian authorities had opened the border after several hours of it remaining sealed shut.

Crowds who gathered at the razor wire fence proceeded to use a heavy metal pole to bring down a gate by digging beneath the barrier and using force to push it up and out. At least two people collapsed in the crush and ensuing use of tear gas, Reuters television images showed.

  15. Clashes break out as France begins clearing Calais migrant camp

CALAIS, France (Reuters) – Clashes with police broke out on Monday as work got underway to clear part of the shanty town outside Calais in northern France where migrants are trying to reach Britain.

Police fired tear gas around midday, about 150-200 migrants and activists threw stones, and three makeshift shelters were set ablaze, according to a Reuters photographer at the site.

Earlier, one person was arrested for trying to stop a group of about 20 workers under heavy police protection from clearing the site, where about 3,000 people are staying.

“The migrants are just going to run and hide in the woods and the police are going to have to go after them,” said activist Francois Guennoc of the Auberge des Migrants migrant support group.

Regional Prefect Fabienne Buccio had said the police presence was needed because “extremists” could try to intimidate migrants into turning down housing offers or buses to reception centers.

Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said last week that authorities would work with humanitarian organizations to relocate the migrants to a nearby park of converted shipping containers or other reception centers around France.

On Thursday, a judge upheld a government order to evict migrants living in the southern part of the camp, although a few makeshift buildings of social importance such as a school and a theater are to remain untouched.

  16. U.S. shale’s message for OPEC: above $40, we are coming back

NEW YORK (Reuters) – For leading U.S. shale oil producers, $40 is the new $70.

Less than a year ago major shale firms were saying they needed oil above $60 a barrel to produce more; now some say they will settle for far less in deciding whether to crank up output after the worst oil price crash in a generation.

Their latest comments highlight the industry’s remarkable resilience, but also serve as a warning to rivals and traders: a retreat in U.S. oil production that would help ease global oversupply and let prices recover may prove shorter than some may have expected.

Continental Resources Inc , led by billionaire wildcatter Harold Hamm, is prepared to increase capital spending if U.S. crude reaches the low- to mid-$40s range, allowing it to boost 2017 production by more than 10 percent, chief financial official John Hart said last week.

Rival Whiting Petroleum Corp , the biggest producer in North Dakota’s Bakken formation, will stop fracking new wells by the end of March, but would “consider completing some of these wells” if oil reached $40 to $45 a barrel, Chairman and CEO Jim Volker told analysts. Less than a year ago, when the company was still in spending mode, Volker said it might deploy more rigs if U.S. crude hit $70.

    http://www.oann.com/u-s-shales-message-for-opec-above-40-we-are-coming-back/

    • I have a hard time believing that the economists really think that high oil prices help the worlds economy! Oil prices have been artifically high because the Gulf States decided they could use this as a weapon to force all sorts of things out of the west. The Socialist governments in the west fearing what the free people in the west would do with low transportation and energy costs decided to go along with the Gulf States so they could increase their power in the west.

Now we have them fighting to stop the lowering of energy costs and the use to be free world once again producing their goods and services at a cost that the ordinary people could afford. The Marxist controlled Universities have been indoctrinating their students in the idea of government control of the economy so long people are believing them and we are suffering because of this.

  17. Asylum seeker rape case judge gets police protection (thelocal, Feb 29, 2016)
    http://www.thelocal.at/20160229/asylum-seeker-rape-case-judge-gets-police-protection

“An Austrian judge who ruled that an 18-year-old asylum seeker who raped a 72-year-old pensioner must serve just 20-months in prison and will not be deported has been placed under police protection after she received death threats.

The Afghan asylum seeker was found guilty of raping the elderly woman on a canal bank in Traiskirchen in Lower Austria. He was 17 at the time of the incident and the maximum penalty for rape under the juvenile justice system is five years behind bars.

However, the judge considered several mitigating factors – such as the fact that he confessed after being arrested and didn’t have a previous criminal record. As the jail sentence is less than three years he will not be deported once he has been released.

The attack took place on September 1, 2015 but police didn’t reveal it at the time because of the sensitivity of the case. Once it became public and the verdict was announced the case attracted wide public interest with many people commenting that the punishment was too light.

Previously only judges and prosecutors who have taken part in high profile cases involving jihadists have been given police protection, because of fears of reprisal attacks from Islamic State sympathisers.

The vice presidents of the district court in Wiener Neustadt, Birgit Borns and Hans Barwitzius, said the sheer amount of threats directed at the judge was “extremely worrying”.

“The level of punishment is directly related to the guilt of the offender – regardless of race or nationality,” they told the Kurier newspaper, adding that a judge must impose a sentence within the legally prescribed framework.

  18. China expects to lay off 1.8 million workers in coal, steel sectors

BEIJING (Reuters) – China said on Monday it expects to lay off 1.8 million workers in the coal and steel industries, or about 15 percent of the workforce, as part of efforts to reduce industrial overcapacity, but no timeframe was given.

It was the first time China has given figures that underline the magnitude of its task in dealing with slowing growth and bloated state enterprises.

Yin Weimin, the minister for human resources and social security, told a news conference that 1.3 million workers in the coal sector could lose jobs, plus 500,000 from the steel sector. China’s coal and steel sectors employ about 12 million workers, according to data published by the National Bureau of Statistics.

“This involves the resettlement of a total of 1.8 million workers. This task will be very difficult, but we are still very confident,” Yin said.

For China’s stability-obsessed government, keeping a lid on unemployment and any possible unrest that may follow has been a top priority.

The central government will allocate 100 billion yuan ($15.27 billion) over two years to relocate workers laid off as a result of China’s efforts to curb overcapacity, officials said last week.

China’s vice finance minister Zhu Guangyao quoted Premier Li Keqiang as telling U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Monday that the fund would mainly focus on the steel and coal sectors.

    http://www.oann.com/china-expects-to-lay-off-1-8-mln-workers-in-coal-steel-sectors/

    • They are talking about over production but what they are really saying is that China;s economy is falling and the demand is dropping because the people can’t afford the energy.

Slightly OT, one reason China wants the disputed islands is the oil deposits that are in the area. One reason China wants high oil prices is that they can trade cheap goods to Iran for oil below the worlds market prices and turn around and sell the oil at a higher often much higher. Because of the very bad deal that Obama made with Iran an unintended consequence is that Iran has less incentive to trade oil for goods below market price. This is a win for Iran and a loss for everyone else.

  19. Former CIA director warns military may refuse to obey orders from a President Trump

Former CIA Director Michael Hayden said that if Donald Trump takes over as president, the military may flat-out refuse to follow his orders.

Those orders are based on certain pledges Trump has made during his campaign tours, Hayden said Friday on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” Politico reports. Hayden ran the CIA from 1999 to 2005.

Specifically, Hayden pointed to Trump’s pledges to bring back waterboarding and to implement collective punishment, namely by killing family members of Islamic State terrorists. Some commentators have suggested that targeting family members of terrorists is currently forbidden by the Geneva Convention.

Trump insisted to an audience in South Carolina that “torture works.” He has also said that he plans to introduce interrogation techniques that are far worse than waterboarding.

Those pledges might inspire the military to rebel.

“Let me give you a punchline: If he were to order that once in government, the American armed forces would refuse to act,” Hayden said in response to a question from Bill Maher

    http://libertyunyielding.com/2016/02/29/former-cia-director-warns-military-may-refuse-to-obey-orders-from-a-president-trump/

    • Just to set the record straight what Trump said was that the families of terrorists who commit attacks in the west should be arrested and prosecuted for helping them. A tactic that should be tried because he is right the terrorists couldn’t have don’t all that planning and gathering of weapons without the families knowing what they were doing.

      • Also the first person to make the suggestion that we arrest and try the famalies of home grown terrorists (well the first I heard) was Lt. Col. Peters retired on FOX news before the primary campaign started. I thought it was a good idea then and still do.

    • A whole raft of 0’s trusted “men” should be pondering their options. There’s a mighty thick layer of scum to scrape off.

  20. Riots in Salt Lake City after police reportedly shoot black teen brandishing broomstick

The Rio Grande District of Salt Lake City erupted in chaos Saturday night, with angry crowds shouting and throwing rocks, bottles, and other debris at police, after a black teen was shot and taken to an area hospital. The teen’s identity has yet to be revealed.

An on-air report by Fox affiliate KSTU indicates the details are still sketchy and that authorities have not yet determined whether the shots fired at the 17-year-old even came from police weapons. Det. Greg Wilking of the Salt Lake City Police Department told reporters, “I don’t have much details on the shooting itself,” adding that “an altercation [was] taking place, and our officers intervened.”

According to the televised report, which follows, the altercation was between the teen and a 40-year-old man. Police were called, and as they arrived on the scene, the youth picked up and began waving a broomstick.

There were numerous eyewitnesses were out on the street owing to the presence of a homeless shelter in the vicinity. One who was interviewed in the video, Selam Mohammed, claims that police failed to give the teen an adequate chance to surrender.

Given the way the police have been demonized this is probably a case of self defense that the blacks are saying wasn’t necessary. You know like the shooting in Ferguson of the giant violent thug that was trying to kill the officer.

  22. GERMANY –

Germany: Thousands attend Germany’s first refugee-only job fair

Germany’s first ever job fair held exclusively for refugees kicked off in Berlin’s Estrel Hotel on Monday, with thousands attending and more than 200 exhibitors from Berlin offering job opportunities.

SOT, Ekkehard Streletzki, owner of Estrel Hotel and fair organiser (German): “As an employer, a hotel, we need employees. This big convention centre was being finished at that time, and I made a motto then. I said ‘Let’s invite refugees’ instead of holding an inauguration ceremony.”

SOT, Ekkehard Streletzki, owner of Estrel Hotel and fair organiser (German): “Nobody will work for only one euro anymore, not even a refugee. I can’t imagine such a thing. They should be paid appropriately as is normal in Germany. Otherwise they will not be able to pay their rents and to subsist. They have to be capable of helping their families subsist.”

SOT, Fadi Salem, teacher and refugee from Syria (German): “I am a teacher and I hope to find a job as a teacher. And I think Germany needs teachers. It is better if Germany helps us as refugees by lowering their needs [requirements] a little bit. To make it a little bit easier. I’m hopeful, but every step here is hard. I’m a refugee, and I think it is very hard.”

  23. Italy flies in Muslim Syrian refugees via air ‘humanitarian corridor’

Italy has been accepting groups of Syrian refugees, flying them in by plane and sparing them the risk of dangerous sea and border crossings.

The first arrivals were greeted on February 4. On Monday another group of 93 flew into Rome airport on a commercial flight from Beirut.

The refugees had been living in camps in Lebanon after fleeing the civil war; they have been granted humanitarian visas.

“I feel happy here but a little nervous, you know, stressed, new life, a new place I’ve never been. My dreams are not that big a dream. I just want to continue my studying, work, have a normal life,” said Mirvat Sayeg, a 23 year-old refugee from Aleppo.

“I saw a lot of good people today and I think it will be a good journey for me to start my career here and have a new future,” added 29-year-old Nakhle Abbpoud.

The project was launched by Italian religious organisations including Catholic and Protestant churches, and the lay organisation the Community of Sant’Egidio.

The plan is for a larger number of refugees to come to Italy legally via the new “humanitarian corridor” by air.

The country’s Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni has hailed the scheme as a model for other countries to follow.

  24. Children’s exhibit of Muslim cultures opens in New York

(RNS) A first-of-its-kind exhibit is introducing young museum-goers to Muslim cultures around the world.

The Children’s Museum of Manhattan opened “America to Zanzibar” earlier this month, a 3,000-square-foot, interactive exhibit that invites kids to explore Muslim cultures across the world. Visitors can design buildings inspired by Islamic architecture, walk through a pretend Muslim-American home furnished with art and other objects donated by Muslim families and climb a life-size camel in a pretend journey across the desert.

The exhibit winds through a courtyard decorated with verses by Muslim poets and an art gallery featuring contemporary works by Muslim-Americans.

“New York City’s Muslim residents make up a vital part of our city’s rich and diverse communities and we’re proud to have this exhibit in one of our city’s important cultural resources,” said New York Mayor Bill de Blasio. “With America to Zanzibar, children will have the chance to learn about Muslim cultures in an engaging and thoughtful way.”

The exhibit, five years in the making, is funded by the the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, among others. It will also feature a host of festivals and live performances during its more than yearlong stay. It will then travel to other parts of the nation.

“America to Zanzibar” is the fourth in the museum’s Global Cultures Exhibition Series. Previous exhibits explored ancient Greece, China and Japan.

  25. HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON

Discover the networks bio of Hillary

Born in Chicago on October 26, 1947, Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton grew up in Park Ridge, Illinois, a solidly Republican suburb of Chicago. In 1964 she supported Republican conservative Barry Goldwater for U.S. President. The following year, she enrolled at Wellesley College in Massachusetts, where her political views would undergo a radical transformation.

Rodham was deeply influenced by a 1966 article titled “Change or Containment,” which appeared in Motive, a magazine for college-age Methodists. Authored by the Marxist/Maoist theoretician Carl Oglesby, who was a leader of the Students for a Democratic Society, this piece defended Ho Chi Minh, Fidel Castro, and Maoist tactics of violence. Its thesis was that “certain cultural settings” (most notably American capitalism) were inherently inequitable and oppressive, and thus caused people to feel “pain and rage” that sometimes erupted into violence — like that of “the rioters in Watts or Harlem” — which was “reactive and provoked” rather than aggressive or malicious. Hillary later said that the Motive article had played a key role in her metamorphosis from Goldwater Republican in 1964 to leftist Democrat in 1968. During her years as First Lady of the United States, Mrs. Clinton would tell a Newsweek reporter that she still treasured the Oglesby piece.[1]

Following the June 1968 assassination of Democratic presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy, Hillary ended her affiliation with the Wellesley campus Young Republicans and volunteered in New Hampshire to work on the presidential campaign of antiwar candidate Eugene McCarthy. When McCarthy later dropped out of the Democratic primary, Hillary threw her support behind the Party’s eventual nominee, Hubert Humphrey. From that point forward, wrote Barbara Olson in her 1999 book Hell to Pay, “Republicans were the enemy and the enemy was allied with evil — the evils of war, racism, sexism, and poverty.”[2]

In late August 1968, when the so-called Chicago Seven incited massive countercultural protests and violent riots near the venue of that year’s Democratic National Convention (in Chicago), Hillary was in Chicago for three nights during the mayhem.

    HILLARY’S ADMIRATION FOR SAUL ALINSKY

In 1969 Hillary wrote her 92-page Wellesley senior thesis on the theories of radical Chicago organizer Saul Alinsky. A great admirer of Alinsky’s activist tactics, Hillary met with the famed author several times in 1968 to interview him personally. She concluded her thesis by stating:

“Alinsky is regarded by many as the proponent of a dangerous socio/political philosophy. As such, he has been feared — just as Eugene Debs [the five-time Socialist Party candidate for U.S. President] or Walt Whitman or Martin Luther King has been feared, because each embraced the most radical of political faiths — democracy.”

Her conclusion also included this sentence: “If the ideals Alinsky espouses were actualized, the result would be social revolution.”

Ultimately, Hillary’s investigation of Alinsky’s methods and ideals led her to believe that President Lyndon Johnson’s federal antipoverty programs did not go far enough in redistributing wealth among the American people and did not give sufficient power to the poor.

When Hillary graduated from Wellesley in 1969, she was offered a job with Alinsky’s Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) in Chicago. She opted instead to enroll at Yale Law School. Nevertheless, she would maintain her allegiance to Alinsky’s teachings throughout her adult life. She also continued to correspond with him, as the two maintained a very friendly relationship steeped in mutual admiration. In a letter dated July 8, 1971, Hillary penned a letter to Alnsky that began: “Dear Saul, When is that new book [Rules for Radicals] coming out—or has it come and I somehow missed the fulfillment of Revelation? I have just had my one-thousandth conversation about Reveille [for Radicals] and need some new material to throw at people. You are being rediscovered again as the New Left-type politicos are finally beginning to think seriously about the hard work and mechanics of organizing. I seem to have survived law school, slightly bruised, with my belief in and zest for organizing intact.”

    • Watergate-era Judiciary chief of staff: Hillary Clinton fired for lies, unethical behavior

As Hillary Clinton came under increasing scrutiny for her story about facing sniper fire in Bosnia, one question that arose was whether she has engaged in a pattern of lying.

The now-retired general counsel and chief of staff of the House Judiciary Committee, who supervised Hillary when she worked on the Watergate investigation, says Hillary’s history of lies and unethical behavior goes back farther – and goes much deeper – than anyone realizes.

Jerry Zeifman, a lifelong Democrat, supervised the work of 27-year-old Hillary Rodham on the committee. Hillary got a job working on the investigation at the behest of her former law professor, Burke Marshall, who was also Sen. Ted Kennedy’s chief counsel in the Chappaquiddick affair. When the investigation was over, Zeifman fired Hillary from the committee staff and refused to give her a letter of recommendation – one of only three people who earned that dubious distinction in Zeifman’s 17-year career.

      Why?

“Because she was a liar,” Zeifman said in an interview last week. “She was an unethical, dishonest lawyer. She conspired to violate the Constitution, the rules of the House, the rules of the committee and the rules of confidentiality.”

How could a 27-year-old House staff member do all that? She couldn’t do it by herself, but Zeifman said she was one of several individuals – including Marshall, special counsel John Doar and senior associate special counsel (and future Clinton White House Counsel) Bernard Nussbaum – who engaged in a seemingly implausible scheme to deny Richard Nixon the right to counsel during the investigatio

  27. North Korea’s Nuclear Missile Threat: Very Bad News

The mainstream media and their stable of “experts” consistently underestimate North Korea’s missile and nuclear weapon capabilities. The gap between how the media report on the North Korean nuclear missile threat and the reality of the threat has become so wide as to be dangerous.

In the aftermath of North Korea’s latest nuclear test on January 6, 2016, for instance, and its launch of a mock satellite on February 7, 2016, the American people were told that North Korea has not miniaturized a nuclear warhead for delivery by missile nor could the missile strike the U.S. with any accuracy.

Mirren Gidda, for example, writing in Newsweek, inexplicably claims “International experts doubt that North Korea has manufactured nuclear weapons small enough to fit on a missile.”

Yet this commonplace assertion that North Korea does not have nuclear-armed missiles is simply untrue.

Eight years ago, in 2008, the CIA’s top East Asia analyst publicly stated that North Korea had successfully miniaturized nuclear warheads for delivery on its Nodong medium-range missile. This capability indicates that the Nodong is able to strike South Korea and Japan, or, if launched off a freighter, even the United States.[1]

In 2009, European intelligence agencies at NATO headquarters also told the media that North Korea’s Nodong missiles were armed with nuclear warheads.[2]

In 2011, the Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), Lt. General Ronald Burgess, testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee that North Korea has weaponized its nuclear devices into warheads for arming ballistic missiles.[3]

    http://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/7512/north-korea-nuclear-missiles

    • Excerpt from article:

The earlier DoD report from 2015 had also downplayed the North Korean nuclear missile threat by comforting readers that, “The pace of its progress will also depend, in part, on how much aid it can acquire from other countries.” Yet the DoD report is replete with evidence that North Korea is in fact receiving copious aid from Russia and China — including Golf-class ballistic missile submarines and an SS-N-6 submarine-launched ballistic missile from Russia.

      • The DoD report from 2015 also acknowledges that North Korea is developing another system for a nuclear strike on the U.S., delivered by satellite; but also notes that the system currently lacks “a reentry vehicle.” However, a nuclear EMP attack delivered by satellite requires no reentry vehicle.

In short, the DoD report was inexplicably silent about North Korea’s current nuclear and missile capability, which, if used, could kill millions of Americans in an EMP attack — as warned by both the 2004 and 2008 Congressional EMP Commission reports.

        • Again, the conventional wisdom missed the real news. Let us explain.

Henry Sokolski, of the National Proliferation Education Center (NPEC), and Dr. Peter Vincent Pry, the Executive Director of the Congressional EMP Task Force, a former top staffer on the House Armed Services Committee, a former CIA analyst, and the co-author of this essay, both said “Not so fast.”

First, U.S. intelligence on North Korea is not perfect. Second, the test could very well have been what is known as a “boosted fission weapon” (which such experts as former Secretary of the Air Force and Reagan’s Deputy National Security Adviser Tom Reed believes it was),[7] rather than a primitive fission atomic bomb.

Remember, the U.S. and other intelligence services have not detected uranium or plutonium (A-Bomb fuels) in any of the North Korean tests, but they have detected tritium (H-Bomb fuel) in at least one. A boosted weapon could explain this anomaly.

One Rand analyst also thinks the test might have been of a boosted fission weapon, and uses a different seismic model that gives a test yield of 50 kilotons (KT) and not the 6-10 KT reported by South Korea and widely used by press reporting on the issue.

What Sokolski implies is that North Korea may be getting help from Russia or China, a possibility that changes the framework of how we in the U.S. have traditionally approached and dealt with proliferation of nuclear weapons, particularly the possible sophistication of nuclear threats from aspirant states.

        • If North Korea and Iran are getting help from Russia or China, as retired U.S. Northcom Commander General (Retired) Charles Jacoby agrees they are,[8] and do not have to rely only on their indigenous capabilities, their nuclear and missile programs at any time could be more advanced than is commonly thought. There is also the possibility that such advanced technology could be sold to other rogue regimes or by all of them to each other.

North Korea could, in fact, already have the H-Bomb. Everyone assumes that the North Korean test was not an H-Bomb because the seismic signal indicates that the yield was too low for an H-Bomb.

  28. New FBI Counter Extremism Site Fails to Mention Islamism
The FBI altered its website ‘Don’t Be a Puppet’ after pressure from the Muslim-Brotherhood-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

The FBI has launched a new website to counter extremism, but it has been stripped of references to Islamist extremism or Islam.

Titled “Don’t be a Puppet,” the site tries to deconstruct some of the motivating factors that lead people into extremism. It’s aimed for use in high schools or other programs for teenagers.

The website was originally slated to launch in November 2015, but did not, following criticisms from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). At the time, CAIR expressed concerns about a new FBI “countering violent extremism” (CVE) online program that would make teachers an extension of law enforcement and may stigmatize and increase bullying of Muslim students.”

Several community organizations told The New York Times they thought the website “focuses almost entirely on Islamic extremism.”

The site was then put on hold, eventually launching in February 2016.

There is no reason why a site that targets the specific roots of Islamist terrorism and tackles the ideology openly should increase the bullying of Muslim students. On the contrary, if the site’s explanation properly separates the theocratic totalitarian political ideology of Islamism from the religion of Islam in general, then it should have the opposite impact – calming fears about Muslims by painting an accurate picture about what is going on.

  29. Illegal Immigrant Terrorist May Be Allowed to Make PTSD Defense
A new trial in store for Rasmieh Yousef Odeh?

Convicted Fraudster and Terrorist May Get to Present Fake PTSD Defense

Sixth Circuit rules that evidence of PTSD may be admissible setting stage for new trial for Arab terrorist who illegally became U.S. citizen.

    Ari Lieberman, February 28, 2016

The legal saga of Rasmieh Yousef Odeh continues. On February 25, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit issued a ruling that could mean a new trial for the convicted fraudster and terrorist. The court’s ruling centers on whether the district court erred in disallowing certain evidence relating to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that the defense sought to introduce to negate an element of the crime.

Odeh’s career of depravity began on February 21, 1969 when she along with her cohorts from the Marxist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine planned and executed a bombing of a SuperSol supermarket in Jerusalem that claimed the lives of two Israeli university students – Leon Kaner, 21, and Edward Jaffe, 22. The two unsuspecting shoppers were stocking up on last minute provisions for a planned hike but Odeh and her gang made sure that they would never make it. Nine others were injured in the blast. A second bomb timed to go off upon arrival of the first responders was neutralized. The gang was also responsible for placing two bombs at the British consulate nearby. One was diffused by Israeli security forces and the other exploded causing only property damage.

Days later, on March 1, 1969 Odeh and the other members of the gang were apprehended. Odeh confessed almost immediately putting the lie to the claim that her confession came about after 25 days of torture. Based on her confession as well as physical evidence linking her to the crime, she was sentenced to life imprisonment but was released in a prisoner swap after serving just ten years. Following her release, she lived in Lebanon for four years and then moved to Jordan. From Jordan, she moved to the United States.

  30. What the Campus Crybully Wars Are Really About
The end of education as we know it.

The campus wars aren’t really about race. Race and the rest of the identity politics roster are the engine for transforming an academic environment into an activist environment.

The average campus already skews left, but it maintains the pretense of serving an educational purpose. The demands put forward on various campuses begin with racial privileges, but do not end there. These demands call for politicizing every department, the mandatory political indoctrination of all students and faculty, and the submission of non-political academic departments to activist political ones.

The campus wars are a declaration that activist non-academic departments that offer identity politics analysis while contributing nothing and which often owe their existence to campus clashes from a previous generation, should dominate all areas of life and thought at every university.

Imagine if physics majors rioted and demanded that every single area of study on campus had to incorporate theoretical physics and hire physics majors. That is exactly what is happening with identity politics studies. It’s a naked power grab that has the potential to redefine academia as we know it

  31. The Next Syrian Refugee Crisis: Child Brides
Why not make a problem worse by ignoring it?

Reprinted from The Investigative Project on Terrorism.

While the West debates the humanitarian problem of Syrian refugees flooding across its borders, the discussions repeatedly turn to the dangers they might pose: what if there are terrorists among them? How can we be sure? How can we save those in need of saving and still be safe ourselves?

Yet for many of these refugees, married off against their will, the terror has already begun. They are 11 and 13 and 14 years old. Some of them are pregnant. Some are already mothers at 14. Their husbands are 25 or 38 or 40. And there is no escape.

“Child marriage existed in Syria before the start of the conflict,” reports Girls Not Brides, a global partnership aimed at ending child marriage worldwide, “but the onset of war and the mass displacement of millions of refugees has led to a dramatic rise in the number of girls married as children.”

Indeed, since the start of the refugee crisis, UNICEF reports, as many as “one-third of registered marriages among Syrian refugees in Jordan between January and March 2014 involved girls under 18,” with some as young as 11.

In many cases, these marriages are set up by well-meaning parents who believe their daughters would be safer in the asylum centers if married and so, less likely to be approached sexually by strange men. In other instances, the daughters are sold off by parents who can no longer afford to keep them, or given in marriage to men already planning to leave Syria in the hopes that, once the couple arrives in the West, the parents can then legally join them.
