  1. REUTERS -For veteran Turkish smuggler, only an army could stop migrant flow

Demand has never been higher for the services of Turkish smuggler Dursun, who has taken migrants to Europe for more than decade, and he says nothing short of an army could stamp out his illicit trade.

The EU is counting on Ankara to stem the flow of migrants to Europe after more than a million arrived last year, mainly illegally by sea from Turkey, in the continent’s worst migration crisis since World War Two.

But the task of policing Turkey’s coastline may be beyond its stretched security forces, even with the help of Western allies. NATO sent ships to the Aegean on Thursday to help Turkey and Greece stop criminal networks smuggling migrants.

“Turkey would have to put soldiers on all the beaches,” said the burly Dursun, 30, who has spent three short prison spells in Greece for piloting motor boats full of migrants into Europe. “You have to put thousands of soldiers on the beaches,” he said in the coastal city of Izmir, declining to give his last name.

The Turkish government is under growing pressure from the EU following a 3 billion euro ($3.3 billion) aid deal for the country last year, aimed at slowing the flow of migrants. Thousands died making the crossing in 2015, and the exodus has also strained security and social systems in some EU states and fueled support for anti-foreigner groups.

Ankara has stepped up patrols of its 2,600 km Aegean coast, deploying more coastguard and police and increasing the punishment for the smugglers it catches, especially if their actions led to the deaths of migrants.

While Turkey boasts the second-largest army in the NATO alliance, it is also fighting Kurdish militants in the southeast and has a heavy military presence on its border with Syria where a civil war has raged for five years, the main source of the current refugee crisis.

Namik Kemal Nazli, governor of the Ayvalik district near Izmir, said a big problem facing authorities was the fact that much of the coastline was remote and relatively unpopulated, with many places where smugglers could hide.

“It is hard to control the entire coastline and they are exploiting this,” he said.

    DANGEROUS ROUTES

Western diplomats are sympathetic to the difficulties of managing a jagged coast line with plenty of blind spots. But they say Ankara can still do more, both with policing its shores and in tracing criminal gangs. They also say it should do a better job of deterring illegal migrants, especially as some have been caught multiple times trying to make the crossing.

Illegal migrants are usually fingerprinted after being caught. Depending on their nationality, many are released, free to try to reach Europe again.

Turkey, which has taken in more than 2.6 million refugees since the start of the Syrian civil war, says it needs more help from the West. Its Minister for EU Affairs Volkan Bozkir said last week that solving the refugee crisis was not just Turkey’s job, urging European countries to cooperate with Ankara on border controls and information sharing.

Yet the flood of refugees only increases, with more than 80,000 arriving in Europe by boat during the first six weeks of this year – mainly from Turkey to Greece – and more than 400 dying as they tried to cross, according to UNHCR, the U.N. refugee agency.

More than 2,000 people a day are now risking their lives to make the journey, UNHCR said last week. The cold winter weather can mean cheaper passage but a more dangerous journey.

Smugglers are taking riskier sea routes to avoid the police crackdown, said Abby Dwommoh of the International Organization of Migration.

“When interdiction measures go up, smugglers and the migrants tend to find ways around them,” she told Reuters. “The numbers are overwhelming for any country to deal with.”

    MORE CAUTIOUS

When Dursun started out, there was only a trickle of refugees from Eritrea and Somalia; there were no Syrians and only a few smugglers. Now, the courtyard of a mosque in the rundown neighborhood of Basmane in Izmir where he operates is filled with Syrians trying to make deals with smugglers – just a few blocks from a police station.

Even though police are more vigilant, Dursun said there was nothing they can do unless a smuggler was caught on a beach with a group of refugees. As he spoke, he pointed out other smugglers walking past. Locals say it has become a popular occupation, to which neighborhood drug dealers have switched.

Still, the native of Turkey’s Black Sea coast says he’s become more cautious and no longer captains the boats, despite the lucrative payment of 2,000 euros a trip.

Instead, he brings the migrants and refugees to the setting off points by minibus, coordinating with others in a chain that includes lookouts and those who assemble the groups of refugees.

“If the driver is alone and gets arrested, but nobody saw him transport refugees and there were no refugees in the car, he will be out again straight away,” he said.

Punishments have become much harsher. Recently, two ring leaders were sentenced to 15 and 20 years in jail, he said.

On a recent stormy day, the hotels in Cesme, about an hour’s drive from Izmir, were filled with migrants who were waiting for the weather to break before setting out from Europe.

One hotel manager, who declined to give his name, said even if NATO “shut down the sea” to stop smugglers, that wouldn’t deter migrants from seeking to reach Europe.

“Of course they would look for other ways.”

    • Germany’s Merkel backs no-fly zone in Syria

Berlin (AFP) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel Monday backed a call from Turkey for a no-fly zone over parts of Syria, saying it would alleviate the situation of displaced Syrians.

“In the current situation it would be helpful, if there could be such an area, where none of the parties are allowed to launch aerial attacks, that is to say, a kind of no-fly zone,” she told the daily Stuttgarter Zeitung, when asked about opening up such areas to host people fleeing fighting in the war-torn country.

She acknowledged that it was impossible to negotiate with “terrorists from the Islamic State”, “but if it’s possible for the anti-Assad coalition and the Assad-supporters to come to an agreement, that would be helpful.”

Turkey, which is already hosting around 2.2 million Syrian refugees, has been calling for a secure zone within Syria where the displaced could find refuge.

Top diplomats from world powers agreed at talks in Munich last Friday on a “nationwide cessation of hostilities” within a week, in the latest bid to find an end to Syria’s five-year conflict.

But doubts are growing over whether the deal can be honoured, as Turkey has defied international calls and shelled parts of northern Syria for a third day on Monday, while a suspected Russian air strike killed nine people at a hospital supported by Doctors Without Borders in the north-western part of the country.

Merkel Says EU Intentions Won’t Suffice to Solve Refugee Crisis

German Chancellor Angela Merkel criticized her European Union partners for a lack of support in the region’s refugee crisis, three days before she meets other EU leaders to discuss a resettlement plan that many aren’t backing.

“Everyone wants to protect the outer border” of the EU against uncontrolled migration, Merkel said Monday at a campaign rally in Baden-Wuerttemberg state, where voters go to the polls on March 13. “But not everyone is telling me how exactly we’re supposed to do that.”

As EU governments bicker over how to deal with the biggest influx since World War II, Germany is turning to Turkey and a subgroup of EU countries to help channel and resettle refugees from Syria’s civil war. Merkel said she’ll take stock of her effort to curb the influx after an EU summit that starts on Thursday.

“Maybe others will follow our lead,” she said in the southern town of Weingarten.

The chancellor renewed her message that Europe can’t afford to reverse free travel and commerce to ward off refugees, rejecting a reinstatement of full-fledged border controls in Germany that some in her coalition advocate. Evoking her life behind the Berlin Wall in isolated, communist East Germany until 1989, she said: “I always say, I lived in the GDR — the border controls were even better there.”

The refugee crisis has eroded Merkel’s approval ratings, posing the biggest threat to her chancellorship since she took office in 2005. While Germany “can’t offer asylum to everyone in the world,” Germans should try to face the challenge with “a friendly face,” she said.

The rally was Merkel’s first this year in the southwestern state — home to Daimler AG and Porsche AG — which her Christian Democratic Union lost to the Greens five years ago. Rhineland-Palatinate and the eastern region of Saxony-Anhalt also go to the polls on March 13.

    • Germany expects 500,000 refugees this year: newspaper

The German government expects 500,000 refugees to come to Germany this year, German newspaper Rheinische Post cited sources from the Federal Labor Office as saying.

German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere told Frank-Juergen Weise, head of both the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) and the Federal Labor Office, to prepare for an influx of that size this year, the newspaper said in an advance copy of a report due to be published on Tuesday.

The German Interior Ministry was not immediately available to comment on the report.

Last year some 1.1 million migrants arrived in Germany. German media tend to use the word refugee to refer to both refugees and migrants.

  4. Russia is getting it RIGHT in Syria, it’s the UK getting it WRONG, blasts ex-army chief (express, Feb 15, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/644269/Syria-airstrikes-General-Lord-Dannatt-Britain-copy-Russia-support-Assad

“BRITAIN is failing spectacularly in Syria by backing the “losing side” and should follow Russia’s lead by launching airstrikes in support of the Assad regime, the former head of the army has said.

General Lord Dannatt, ex-chief of general staff, said defeating Islamic State (ISIS) would only be achieved through military force.

He added airstrikes alone would not yield an end to the five-year long civil war – or finish off the depraved terror group.

The senior official, who led the British army between 2006-2009, said: “It is only going to be one with military defeat. From the air can help, but on the ground is where the decision is going to come.

“Conflicts are only resolved on the ground…it has got to be soldiers acting on the ground that bring a resolution, but within a diplomatic and political framework. That is what is missing in Syria.”

Lord Dannatt said the Russian’s had aptly demonstrated how to counter the extremist threat in Syria by backing the side most likely to win, despite reservations about the reported barrel-bombing of civilian areas by government forces.

He told the BBC: “The Russians are coordinating with the Assad regime and are being very successful. From the air and on the ground, they are working in a coordinating fashion.

“Our problem is that we are working with the losers. Let’s work with that regime.

“There may be an element of my enemy’s enemy is my friend, and choosing the least worst of several very unattractive options.”

Peter Ford, a former British ambassador to Syria, also blasted the UK for backing extremists disguised as moderate rebel fighters.

He argued defence chiefs were intent on removing President Bashar al-Assad despite wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya proving the difficulties in simply toppling a dictator without a comprehensive plan for what could replace them.

He described Britain’s actions in the Middle East like “a dog returning to vomit”.

The former diplomat said it was time to “get real” and accept that Assad had to remain in power, telling BBC2’s The Big Questions: “The West has to stop propping up the moderate opposition, which is not moderate at all.

“It has to allow the Syrian army backed by the Russians to deal with ISIS. It is a local problem that should be dealt with by the local governments.””

    • We will now see if Britain has slipped as far down the dictatorship scale as France. Will they arrest him or put other pressure on him or ignore him?

  5. Russia’s Latest Weapons Sale to Iran Shifts the Balance of Mideast Power (yahoo, Feb 15, 2016)
    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/russia-latest-weapons-sale-iran-175400695.html

“Iran is purchasing more and more military hardware from Russia, as Tehran moves to aggressively beef up its military capability after decades of international economic sanctions.

Moscow will deliver S-300 air defense missile systems to Iran in “the nearest time,” RIA news agency quoted Russia’s Foreign Ministry as saying on Monday.

Russia and Iran signed an $800 million contract in 2007 for the supply of five S-300 systems, but the advanced defensive weapons system deal was frozen in 2010 due to U.N sanctions. Russian President Vladimir Putin approved delivery of the air defense missile system in April 2015.

Iran has also shown interest in buying more advanced, S-400 missile systems, which are currently deployed at Russia’s airbase in Syria, but no formal talks have reportedly been held.

The news of the S-300’s imminent delivery comes on the heels of an announcement last week on Iran’s Ministry of Defense web site that the Islamic Republic will sign a contract with Russia for the purchase of Sukhoi-30 fighter jets. The fighter jet, which is part of Moscow’s military arsenal in the war in Syria, is said to be comparable to the American F-15E fighter-bomber.

While the exact number of fighters and the timeline for signing the deal remain unknown, an Iranian defense official said that Iran would be involved in the production of the aircraft.

Iran needs to “seriously focus on the air force and fighters,” the official said. “We are moving toward a contract. We told them that we need to be involved in the production (of the plane) as well.”

The acquisition, and Iranian involvement in the production, mark a significant step for the country as it seeks to become an even greater regional power in the already volatile Middle East.

Iran’s air force relies on domestically altered versions of outdated warplanes, including former Soviet Union-era MiGs. At the same time, Tehran is backing forces in conflicts in Syria and Yemen; if those allies begin demanding more support, or Iranian leaders want to expand their influence, the nation’s military arsenal would benefit from a massive upgrade and from the technical knowhow gleaned from helping build the new equipment.

Russia also stands to benefit economically and diplomatically from turning Iran into a client. Moscow’s economy has been walloped over the last several years, thanks to international sanctions over its aggression toward Ukraine and the tumbling price of oil. Arms sales offer an easy cash infusion into Russia’s economy.

It’s no secret that Russia’s foray into Syria was motivated by Moscow’s concern over losing a major arms partner in Damascus. By increasing its entanglements with Iran, Russia bolsters a partner and leaves the U.S. and its allies playing catch-up as the Kremlin draws the Islamic Republic deeper into its orbit.”

    • Russia and Iran are both using the other to achieve their goals, the big question is which will end up on top?

  6. Salafi preacher calls on Cairo University students to disobey face veil ban (ahram, Feb 15, 2016)
    http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/1/64/187664/Egypt/Politics-/Salafi-preacher-calls-on-Cairo-University-students.aspx

“A prominent Salafi preacher called Monday on Cairo University’s female medical students and staffs to disobey a recent decision made by the university’s head to ban them from wearing face veils in all of its hospitals and clinics starting this week.

“The decision is in opposition to the rules of Sharia, the judiciary and the constitution,” Yasser Borhami, the deputy leader of ultra-orthodox movement Salafist Call (Al-Da‘waa Al-Salafiyyai) said in a press statement.

“If any of you were prohibited from working for not implementing the decision, go file a lawsuit,” Borhami added.

Head of Cairo University Gaber Nassar issued the decision on Sunday, citing “the protection of the rights of the patients and work interests.”

The decision will be applied to doctors, nurses, hospital technical assistants and all other staff in Qasr Al-Aini Hospital as well as other medical facilities owned by the state-owned university.

In October 2015, Nasser issued a decree banning the university’s academic staff from wearing face veils, also known as the niqab, inside classrooms.

He justified his decision by saying that the number of teaching staff members wearing the full-face veil is only 10 out of approximately 22,000 members teaching in 24 faculties.

“The university received reports from some of the faculties’ deans regarding difficulties in communication between students and teachers wearing the niqab, particularly in language courses,” Nasser said at the time.

“The ban aims to enhance the quality of communication and education,” he added.”

  7. Jordan’s Muslim Brotherhood cuts ties to Egypt’s parent group (ahram, Feb 15, 2016)
    http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/1/64/187661/Egypt/Politics-/Jordans-Muslim-Brotherhood-cuts-ties-to-Egypts-par.aspx

“Jordan’s branch of the Muslim Brotherhood has formally cut ties with the region-wide movement based in Egypt, a spokesman said Monday.

The decision is the latest setback for the wider Brotherhood, once seen as the main political beneficiary of the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings but hit hard in recent years by government crackdowns.

The Jordanian branch has undergone several splits over the past year, with breakaway groups emphasizing a domestic agenda.

The original core group decided late last week, in a meeting of its main decision-making body, or Shura Council, to change its bylaws and cut ties with the parent movement, said a spokesman, Moath Khawaldeh.

“On Thursday, the Shura Council met and amended the basic law, disconnecting the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan from Egypt,” he said.

Egypt’s Brotherhood, from which ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi hails, is declared a terrorist organisation in the country.

Khawaldeh said the decision is part of reform efforts ahead of internal elections next month.

Jordanian analyst Ibrahim Gharaibeh said he believes the core group came to see its parent movement as an increasing liability. “This led to political concerns (for the group) in Jordan and the group’s ability to survive,” he said.

Three relatively pragmatic groups have broken away from the more hawkish Brotherhood core group and its political arm, the Islamic Action Front, over the past year.

Disagreements focused on whether to participate in elections in Jordan and the nature of ties with the parent movement and the militant group Hamas, the Brotherhood branch in the Palestinian territories.”

The weekly session of the Cabinet, chaired by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman at Al-Yamama Palace here, also thanked the NATO defense ministers for commending the Kingdom’s leading global role in fighting Daesh, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

It also appreciated the NATO defense ministers for acknowledging the leading role taken by the Kingdom to form an Islamic military alliance to counter terrorism, saying that this will be supportive for global efforts to fight terrorist groups, at the head of which is Daesh.

  10. Turkish Air Force violated Greek airspace 22 times on Monday, the Greek General Staff said.

ATHENS (Sputnik) — The violations took place over the islands of Samos and Chios in the eastern Aegean Sea and over Lemnos and Lesbos in the northern part of the sea, the General Staff said, adding that two “virtual dogfights” between Greek and Turkish aircraft took place.

On Wednesday, Greek media reported that at least six Turkish fighter jets, flying in a single formation, violated Greek airspace.

Turkey’s air force is known to violate the neighboring country’s airspace almost on a daily basis. Turkish incursions reached a peak in 2014, when the number of violations reached 2,224, according to University of Thessaly figures based on Greek military data.

  12. Recently Poland changed its government and changed its policy not only towards refugees but also towards things like patriotism or pride from one’s own nation. In Poland, like in Hungary, patriotism and Christianity are not longer bad words, no longer things which have to be attacked. But the MSM in the West and some people in Brussels do not like it. For the last couple of months MSM attacked Polish government calling it autocratic and even totalitarian. Now, they are attacking the person which is very much admired in Poland and of which all Poles, catholic or not, are proud of. They are attacking John Paul II.
They do not attack him openly, they just cowardly want people to think that the a friendship with married woman can not be just a friendship, that it has to be something else. I think that it is disgusting. I think that MSM now reached the level, or rather, fall to the gutter.

  14. Oxford Labour Leader Quits Due To ‘Poisonous’ Anti-Semitic Hamas Supporting Students
The Co-Chair of the Oxford University Labour Club (OULC) has quit, claiming anti-Semitism and support of Islamist terror among left wing students is becoming routine.

    Alex Chalmers – Facebook

In a Facebook announcement, Alex Chalmers slammed “senior members of the club expressing their ‘solidarity’ with Hamas and explicitly defending their tactics of indiscriminately murdering civilians”, and said that concerns about anti-Semitism were dismissed as “just the Zionists crying wolf”.

He also said the club’s Executive was prone to “throwing around the term ‘Zio’ (a term for Jews usually confined to websites run by the Ku Klux Klan) with casual abandon”, and stated that, “a large proportion of both OULC and the student left in Oxford more generally have some kind of problem with Jews”.

The final sticking point for Mr. Chalmers seems to be the OULC voting to support the Oxford Israeli Apartheid Week, described by him as “a movement with a history of targeting and harassing Jewish students and inviting antisemitic speakers to campuses”.

  16. Austria plans quota as part of ‘domino effect’ to slow migrants

Austria will introduce quotas to limit the flow of migrants onto its territory and is preparing crowd-control measures at up to a dozen additional crossings in case a bottleneck prompts a shift in peoples’ movements, it said on Tuesday.

Countries between Austria and Greece on the migrants’ main route into Europe, through the Balkans and towards Germany, were also progressively tightening their border restrictions, creating a “domino effect”, government officials said.

“We have reached our capacity in various areas and must apply the brakes step by step,” Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner told a news conference at the country’s busiest crossing, at Spielfeld, on the border with Slovenia.

“There will be a daily quota and an hourly quota and, as soon as these are reached, we will stop (letting people through),” she said, adding that Germany has used a similar system on its border with Austria for months.

That system has caused backlogs and delays in Austria.

A similar outcome was to be expected in Slovenia, Mikl-Leitner said, adding that preparations would be made at a dozen additional border crossings, including the vital Brenner connection with Italy, for greater restrictions if necessary.

She declined to say how large the quotas would be.

Austria has mainly been a corridor into Germany for the hundreds of thousands of people, many of them Syrian refugees, who have reached its territory since the two countries threw open their borders to them in September.

Austria and Germany have taken in a similar number of asylum seekers in proportion to their populations, a much larger share than most in Europe but still a far smaller burden than Syria’s neighbours Lebanon and Jordan.

With concerns about the influx fuelling support for the far right in Austria, the country’s coalition government has grown increasingly impatient with the slow progress of European measures aimed at addressing the continent’s migration crisis.

“My impression is that a European solution will not be possible at least in the short term and possibly also in the medium term,” Defence Minister Hans Peter Doskozil told the joint news conference with Mikl-Leitner in Spielfeld.

“We must act now,” he added.

Mikl-Leitner said preparations would be made at a dozen crossings in addition to Spielfeld for measures to manage larger numbers of arrivals if necessary. Those could include a fence like the 4-km (2.5-mile) one there, she added.

The Brenner crossing with Italy is one of those 12, Mikl-Leitner said, adding that efforts would be made to limit any effect on traffic. The highway there is one of the busiest commercial thoroughfares between Italy and northern Europe.

Austria has already said it will halve asylum applications from 2015, and last week Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz told Macedonia to be ready to “completely stop” the flow of migrants across its southern border, adding that Austria would soon do the same.

The Latest: Austria plans to extend border controls to Italy as it plans for possible shifts in migrant flows to the country

Austria plans to extend border controls to Italy as it plans for possible shifts in migrant flows to the country.

An Interior Ministry statement Tuesday says checkpoints will be set up at the Silian, Brenner and Nauders-Reschenpass crossings. Eight other new check points will be established on the country’s border to Slovenia, where most of those looking to settle in Austria and further northward are now entering.

The statement also says more military personnel will be patrolling Austrian borders.

It quotes Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner that the moves are necessary “as long as there are no viable solutions on the EU outer borders.”

She is alluding to Greek problems in protecting the bloc’s external borders from the flow of migrants fleeing the Mideast and other regions of war and poverty.

  19. Hezbollah says Turks, Saudis dragging whole region into war (france24, Feb 16, 2016)
    http://www.france24.com/en/20160216-hezbollah-says-turks-saudis-dragging-whole-region-war

“BEIRUT (AFP) – Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah on Tuesday accused Ankara and Riyadh of dragging the entire region into war and said “victory” was imminent for his Shiite Lebanese group and its Syrian regime allies.

“They (Turkey and Saudi Arabia) are ready to drag the region into a war,” Nasrallah said in a video address to supporters in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Hezbollah bastion.

He said the two countries have been pushing to send in international ground forces because they “are not ready to accept a political solution to the conflict in Syria, which is why they want to continue the war and destroy it”.

Nasrallah said Riyadh and Ankara planned to intervene directly because their allies “the Islamist rebels on the ground have suffered successive defeats” at the hands of Kurdish and Syrian regime forces.

He also said victory for President Bashar al-Assad’s forces, backed by Hezbollah, Iran and Russia was coming.

“In the days ahead and for the decade to come… we will proclaim victory alongside the Syrian army,” he said.

He also vowed “to prevent Daesh (Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group), Al-Nusra Front (the Syrian Al-Qaeda affiliate), America, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and their pawns from occupying Syria and Israel to realise their ambitions.”

On Saturday, Turkey said that it could, alongside fellow international coalition member Saudi Arabia, mount a land operation against IS in Syria.

Syria’s ally Iran, which has sent thousands of “military advisers” into Syria, warned Tuesday that the deployment of Saudi troops would violate “international law”.”

  20. REVEALED: How ‘totally unprecedented’ migrant crisis is pushing Sweden to breaking point (express, Feb 16, 2016)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/644315/Sweden-migrant-crisis-refugee-asylum-seekers-Alexandra-Mezher-breaking-point

“SWEDEN has been pushed to breaking point as it struggles to deal with increasing migrant violence and a “totally unprecedented” influx of refugees.

Sweden is absorbing the vast majority of the migrants coming to Europe to seek asylum and the country is now in turmoil.

Violence and crime has swept the nation with police declaring they now have entire areas which are ‘no-go’ zones.

In 2015 alone Sweden, with a population of 9.5million, received over 160 000 asylum applications and the country is expected to take as many as 190,000 refugees, or two per cent of the population, in 2016.

Since the Second World War Sweden has prided itself on helping migrants who cross their borders despite some moves to the political right in recent years.

But now the once welcoming country has turned into a battle ground where Swedes are afraid to go outside and police are openly attacked by migrants.

In a secret report by Sweden’s National Criminal Investigation Service attacks on officers are detailed including police cars being stoned by masked groups.

Some 52 areas have been put on a “blacklist” with some areas being so lawless two cars are sent to every call out.

The report said children aged 12 carry weapons for older criminals and 70 cars and buildings were set on fire in an arson spate last year.

On February 6 Express.co.uk revealed a map with nearly 20 sex attacks that happened in January alone.

The incidents involve young boys and girls, as well as adults being held down, groped, flashed, raped and claimed as a migrant’s property.

As Europe saw the highest number asylum seekers since the Second World War last year, the unprecedented number has greatly challenged the resources and social structures in Sweden.

Sweden is apart of the Schengen zone but after a historic autumn resulting in many political changes in Sweden and the EU the country has for the first time in recent history implemented border control to its fellow Scandinavian countries.

In November, Anders Danielsson, the Director-General of the Migration Agency in Sweden said: “More people than ever are seeking asylum in Europe and in Sweden, and the situation at the moment is totally unprecedented.”

According to the UNHCR one million people will make their way to Europe in 2016 and the Migration Agency stated “it is hardly possible to talk about a forecast any longer”.

Early on in 2015 as many as 4,000–5,000 asylum seekers came to Sweden each month with a dramatic increase to 39,196 in October.

The unparalleled growth caught Sweden’s public sector off guard with officials demanding the Government grants them more resources to absorb the impact.

National Police Commissioner Dan Eliasson has even declared his officers did not have the resources to halt the growing migrant violence and attacks.

In January Swedish police had to flee after being surrounded by an angry mob of migrants when they went to rescue a 10-year-old boy, who had allegedly been raped.

An alarmed officer revealed he was mentally prepared to fight for his life as the migrants closed in on him and his team.

The number of reported incidents at Swedish asylum centres has increased drastically from 148 in 2014 to 322 in 2015.

According to a national progress report, the increased violence is due to overcrowding, low standard of living, mental illness and insecurity about the future.

The report said: “Police do not have the resources to handle all the disturbances at reception centres.”

As officers struggle with the situation, migrant violence has drastically increased as two people have been killed at refugee centres in Sweden.

In January 22-year-old Alexandra Mezher was knifed to death at a reception centre in Mölndal, near Gothenburg.

Ms Mezher died in hospital from the injuries inflicted on her after she intervened in a fight at the youth asylum centre where she was working.

A second person was killed on the weekend after a fight broke out among residents at another reception centre.

Fury swept the nation after Ms Mezher’s death and further anger festered as Mr Eliasson went on a morning talk show and showed sympathy for the migrant accused of murdering the 22-year-old.

The discontent was so severe Police inspector Anders Karlsson slammed the chief for his behaviour and called for his resignation for failing Swedish citizens and officers.

Inspector Karlsson was hailed throughout Sweden for his unforgiving criticism of the Commissioner and his police station has been showered with tokens of appreciation since.

As Swedish citizen’s are growing more fearful attacks on migrants have become increasingly common with people turning to the far-right parties.

At the end of January a mob of masked men attacked migrants ‘in revenge’.

In a pamphlet the mob declared: “All over the country, reports are pouring in that the police can no longer cope with preventing and investigating the crimes which strike the Swedish people.

“In some cases, for example, in the latest murder of a woman employed at a home for so called ‘unaccompanied minor refugees’ in Molndal, it goes as far as the National Police Commissioner choosing to show more sympathy for the perpetrator than the victim.

“But we refuse to accept the repeated assaults and harassment against Swedish women.

“We refuse to accept the destruction of our once safe society.”

In November a poll found that 41 per cent of Swedes, compared to 29 per cent in September, thought the country was taking too many refugees.

Already in August anti-immigrant party, the Sweden Democrats became Sweden’s most popular political party, according to a YouGov poll.

The far-right party had the support of 25.2 per cent of voters and at the time a party MP said: “There’s too much immigration and too many beggars from eastern Europe.

“People are starting to realise that this is a serious problem for Sweden.”

Sweden’s Interior Minister Anders Ygeman has said he is now prepared to expel 80,000 migrants who do not have the right to protection to calm the growing discontent, however it would appear to be too little too late.

The question plaguing Swedish citizens now is how they will integrate 150,000 refugees from very different cultures without leaving their on culture in complete ruins.”
