  1. Jeremy Corbyn: ‘I’d take Donald Trump to a London mosque’ (BBC, video, Jan 17, 2016)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-35337622

“Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he would invite Donald Trump along to a mosque if he came to the UK. Speaking on the Andrew Marr Show, he said Mr Trump should be allowed into the country.
“I don’t think you should ban people coming to Britain,” he said.”

    • Note how he thinks Trump is so stupid that one propaganda visit to a mosque that has been cleared of all subversive material and people is all it will take to change his mind.

  2. UN Report: Thousands of Ramadi Buildings Damaged, Destroyed (abcnews, Jan 17, 2016)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/report-thousands-ramadi-buildings-damaged-destroyed-36341898

“A United Nations report published Saturday finds that the ongoing battle for the city of Ramadi has damaged or destroyed more than 4,500 buildings. The findings, gathered by comparing satellite imagery of the city collected in July 2014 to imagery collected in December, reveal that nearly 1,500 buildings have been completely destroyed, the report said.

The Islamic State group overran Ramadi, capital of Anbar province, in May after months of clashes with Iraqi government forces. Last month government forces retook the city’s western and central districts under cover of heavy coalition air bombardment.

“The kind of damage that happened in Ramadi is incomparable to what we saw in Tikrit,” said Lise Grande, the U.N.’s deputy special representative to Iraq, referring to the last major city that forces aligned with the Iraqi government took back from IS control. The extent of the damage in Ramadi, she says, raises concerns about reconstruction.

Grande emphasized the report was preliminary as U.N. teams have not yet been able to access Ramadi, 70 miles (115 kilometers) west of Baghdad, on the ground.

While members of the U.S.-led coalition to fight IS have pledged more than $50 million to Iraqi reconstruction, Iraqi and coalition officials estimate that rebuilding Ramadi alone could cost hundreds of millions of dollars…”

    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/syria-group-killed-300-attacks-countrys-east-36341596

“Syria’s government said Sunday that Islamic State militants slaughtered 300 people in an “appalling massacre” committed in the eastern city of Deir el-Zour in daylong attacks that saw the extremists make significant advances in the contested region.

The state-run SANA news agency said that most of those killed in Saturday’s attacks were elderly people, women and children while opposition activists said many of the victims were Syrian soldiers and pro-government militiamen and their families.

The killings are some of the worst carried out by the extremist group, which controls large parts of Syria and Iraq and has killed thousands of people in both countries.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which documents all sides of the Syria conflict through activists on the ground, said late Saturday that at least 135 people were killed. It said around 80 of them were soldiers and pro-government militiamen and the rest civilians.

It added that many of them were shot dead or beheaded…”

“Another move to ban child marriages in Pakistan has fallen at the first hurdle. The bill to prohibit underage marriages has been withdrawn after the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) declared it un-Islamic.

The ruling party lawmaker, who moved the bill, withdrew her proposal on Thursday following staunch resistance from the council, which advises the legislature whether or not a certain law is Sharia-compliant…”

“A Pakistani graduate from McGill University is suing Canada’s Imperial Oil company after the latter rescinded his job offer when it found that the applicant was neither a Canadian citizen nor a permanent resident.

Muhammad Taimoor Haseeb was offered a $86,700-a-year position in the Canadian oil company in December 2014. Even though Haseeb could legally work in Canada under Ottawa’s post-graduation work permit programme, the job offer was revoked after the company found out that he was neither a Canadian national nor a permanent resident.

“Treating me as lesser of a human being because I was not born in Canada is upsetting. Telling me that immigrants take up jobs that locals deserve and have the first right to is just as discriminatory,” Haseeb said…”

  7. Missing Indian youth believed to have joined IS in Afghanistan (khaama, Jan 17, 2016)
    http://www.khaama.com/missing-indian-man-might-have-joined-is-in-afghanistan-4497

“An Indian youth who has gone missing from his hometown since October 30, 2015 might have joined the terrorist group of the Islamic State (IS) or Daesh in Afghanistan.

Reports suggest that Ayaz Sultan, 23, from the Malwani area in Malad, northern Mumbai, had boarded a flight for Kabul.

A study of WhatsApp messages from missing Ayaz Sultan to his friends has confirmed that he is with an Islamic State module in Afghanistan, India’s The Hindu reports citing sources.

“Sultan has been in touch with a select few of his friends via WhatsApp after reaching Kabul. All of the conversations that he has been having are about radical thought and extremist views,” a source in the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) told The Hindu.

According to The Hindu, Sultan keeps sending WhatsApp messages to his friends about atrocities committed against Muslims in various countries and how the world ignores them.

When the friends questioned the necessity of extreme action, he quoted scriptures and asked them to learn the true meaning of jihad (holy war).

ATS sources has further told The Hindu that Sultan’s friends had asked him what he intended to do, and his answer had been a cryptic “wait and watch”.

Sultan, officials said, uses a Wi-Fi connection for chatting on WhatsApp and never a SIM card.

“We have been keeping an eye out to check where Sultan goes from Kabul, as we initially believed that he would try to go to Syria.

In December last year, India arrested three university students who were on their way to join Daesh in Afghanistan.

The students, all at final year, were coming from Hyderabad.”

    http://www.khaama.com/three-taliban-including-two-commanders-killed-while-trying-to-abuse-a-girl-in-ghazni-4495

“Three Taliban militants have been killed while trying to abuse a girl in southeastern Ghazni province, an official said on Sunday.

General Aminullah Amarkhil, Ghazni’s police chief told Khaama Press that two of those killed were Taliban commanders.

Gen. Amarkhil identified them as Sarhadi and Nazar.

He said security agencies are still conducting investigation into the incident but initial reports suggest that they were killed after trying to abuse a girl.

Reports suggest that Taliban have kidnapped brother of the girl following the incident in Shanan area of Andar District.

This comes as the group opposes violence against women.

They have been killing dozens of people on adultery charges in different parts of the country every year.

Most recently they publically executed a man on adultery charges in northwestern Badghis province.”

  9. Drone strike leaves 17 ISIS loyalists dead in Nangarhar (khaama, Jan 17, 2016)
    http://www.khaama.com/drone-strike-leaves-17-isis-loyalists-dead-in-nangarhar-0011

“At least seventeen loyalists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group were killed in airstrikes in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) said the airstrikes were carried out in Deh Bala district on Saturday afternoon.

According to MoD, the airstrikes were carried out by the coalition forces involving at least eight raids targeting the loyalists of the terror group.

Airstrikes carried out by coalition forces and Afghan Air Forces targeting the loyalists of the terror group in Nangarhar province have been rampant during the recent days.

A key commander of the terror group was killed along with ten others in a similar raid in Achin district earlier on Friday.

Nangarhar is among the relatively volatile provinces in eastern Afghanistan where anti-government armed militant groups including the fanatics loyal to the ISIS terror group are actively operating in a number of its remote districts.

The loyalists of the terror group have recently increased their insurgency activities in Afghanistan and targeted the Pakistani consulate in their latest wave of insurgency activities.”

  10. Afghan Official: At Least 13 Dead, 14 Wounded in Attack (abcnews, Jan 17, 2016)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/afghan-official-11-dead-13-wounded-attack-36341492

“At least 13 people have been killed and 14 wounded in a suicide attack at the home of a prominent politician in the increasingly volatile eastern city of Jalalabad, an Afghan official said on Sunday.

The attacker detonated his explosives, which were secreted in his clothing, around 10:30 a.m. at the residential compound of Obaidullah Shinwari, said Ataullah Khyogani, spokesman for the Nangarhar provincial government.

Shinwari is a member of Nangarhar’s provincial council and his family is active in local and national politics.

His father Malik Osman is an influential community elder in the Shinwari district near the Pakistan border who has spoken out against about the presence in the region of the Islamic State group.

Khyogani said a guesthouse on the compound was crowded with people who had been invited to a family event.

“The number of casualties is likely to increase because there were so many people there,” Khyogani said…”

  11. Crimes at refugee homes on the rise, say German Criminal Police (DW, Jan 17, 2016)
    http://www.dw.com/en/crimes-at-refugee-homes-on-the-rise-say-german-criminal-police/a-18984897

“Germany’s Criminal Police Office has registered a growing number of crimes in refugee and asylum centers. Now the interior minister said he wants to keep track of crimes committed by and targeted at migrants.

In an interview with the mass-market “Bild am Sonntag” newspaper, Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) President Holger Münch said offenses in accommodations for asylum seekers had increased “enormously” but still amounted to what he called a “relatively low” number of cases.

People living in the accommodations, particularly many young men, have spent many months in a confined space and “under conditions that promote crime,” he added.

“Migrants, particularly from the Balkans or from North Africa – especially Moroccans, Tunisians and Algerians – commit criminal offenses,” Münch said, adding that such cases were less frequent among Syrian and Iraqi immigrants.

According to the BKA president, half of the offenses at the refugee homes were violent crimes, such as assault, but there was also an increasing number of sexual offences and homicides.

Nevertheless, the number of cases is still “relatively low,” Münch said, adding that the level of crime is not growing “as fast as the number of refugees” entering the country.

Following reports of dozens of attacks on women at New Year’s celebrations in Cologne, sexual assaults have become a main priority for BKA investigators, Münch told “Bild am Sonntag.”…”

“Somalia received a pledge of aid for $50 million from Saudi Arabia this month on the same day it announced it was cutting ties with Saudi rival Iran, a document seen by Reuters showed.

The government, which did not confirm or deny the pledge, has said there was no link between long-running Saudi financial support and its diplomatic decision to break ties with Iran. The Saudi Foreign Ministry did not respond to requests for comment.

But diplomats said it was the latest sign of patronage used by the kingdom to shore up regional support against Iran, a rivalry that deepened this month when Sunni majority Saudi Arabia executed a Shi’ite cleric and Iranian protesters responded by torching the Saudi embassy in Tehran…”

Foreigners making claims of mistreatment against British troops will also be banned from claiming legal aid under new Government plans.

A new “residence test” will see taxpayerfunded civil legal aid restricted to people who have been lawfully resident in the UK for at least 12 months at the time they apply.

    By Dan Williams

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israel bristled on Sunday at the lifting of international sanctions on Iran and vowed to flag up any violations of its arch-foe’s nuclear restrictions while drawing on U.S. defense aid to prepare for a possible military face-off in the future.

The International Atomic Energy Agency on Saturday ruled Iran had abided by last July’s deal with world powers curbing its nuclear program, spelling a windfall in sanctions relief. A parallel Iranian-U.S. prisoner exchange, devised in secrecy, drove home the adversaries’ desire to reengage diplomatically.

The developments put paid to years of intensive Israeli lobbying for more comprehensive curbs on Tehran – a campaign that strained relations between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Barack Obama.

Netanyahu sounded unrepentant on Sunday – even as one Israeli official grudgingly commended the Iranian statecraft and a former senior adviser to the prime minister accused him of having pursued a dangerously failed strategy.

“Were it not for our efforts to spearhead the sanctions and foil Iran’s nuclear program, Iran would have already had nuclear weapons long ago,” Netanyahu told his cabinet.

  16. After vote, China tells Taiwan to abandon independence ‘hallucination’

TAIPEI/BEIJING – Taiwan should abandon its “hallucinations” about pushing for independence, as any moves toward it would be a “poison”, Chinese state-run media said after a landslide victory for the island’s independence-leaning opposition.

Tsai Ing-wen and her Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) won a convincing victory in both presidential and parliamentary elections on Saturday, in what could usher in a new round of instability with China, which claims self-ruled Taiwan as its own.

Tsai pledged to maintain peace with its giant neighbor China, while China’s Taiwan Affairs Office warned it would oppose any move toward independence and that Beijing was determined to defend the country’s sovereignty.

Reacting to Tsai’s victory, China’s government-controlled media used noticeably less shrill language than that leveled at Chen Shui-bian, the DPP’s last president, and noted her pledges for peace and to maintain the “status quo” with China.

But the official Xinhua news agency also warned any moves toward independence were like a “poison” that would cause Taiwan to perish.

Watching, on-screen, the 13-hour fight that unfolded in Benghazi the night of 11 to 12 September 2012, one thing I realized was how well I knew the story of it going in.
Reality bites: a night in Benghazi. (Image: 13 Hours trailer)

Reality bites: a night in Benghazi. (Image: 13 Hours trailer)

If you didn’t know the story well, it may have been a little hard to follow the action in some places. But if you do know it, the ability to anticipate enables you to appreciate better how well director Michael Bay’s (Transformers, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor) movie captures the action.

It also highlights the thing that’s missing from the film narrative: any depiction of what President Obama or Secretary of State Hillary Clinton might have been doing, during those 13 hours. You just have the leisure you need to think about that.

Bay tells the story from the limited (and obviously most dramatic) perspective of the special operators – former military, contract and government-employee security men – on the ground in Benghazi. They’re the men who had two of their own killed during the fight: Tyrone “Rone” Woods and Glen “Bub” Dougherty. Woods and Dougherty died in the attack, as did Ambassador Chris Stevens and IT specialist Sean Smith, present at the U.S. special mission compound with the ambassador that fateful night.

There is an important virtue in telling the story as a tribute to the fighting men, leaving unspoken or ambiguous any political commentary on why they were left to fight without help. The men themselves deserve the tribute, apart from politics. And it does the rest of us good to see them depicted pretty much as they are. With some of the participants from that night consulting on the movie – which is based on the book 13 Hours by Mitchell Zuckoff – Bay got it basically right, letting the reality of their lives and character make its own case to the viewer.

    • She is good, and her statements about the film are cutting Obama and Clinton like a flaying knife.

      • J.E.Dyer’s one of the handful of writers I follow regularly. Like – set a flag alert for changes – Caroline Glick, Dan Greenfield, Jonathon Spyer [because I worry about him, he goes to such hideously dangerous places], a few others.

We should have gotten a better deal for the American prisoners held by Iran. LU’s Ben Bowles is certainly right to question the terms of the deal.
    AP image

    AP image

What we should have gotten is a deal that involved a political transformation of Iran, and a real prospect that political imprisonment and hostage-taking by the rogue regime would cease.

Instead, we got a deal that will spike the guns of critics of the Iran nuclear “deal,” at the crucial point when the UN’s IAEA is about to give Obama the green light to lift nuclear-related sanctions.

Lawmakers in Congress, including a list of Democrats in the House, want to impose additional sanctions because of the ballistic missile launches conducted by Iran last fall, which violated UN resolutions. After Iran briefly took 10 American sailors hostage this week, the chief of the Iranian armed forces, Hassan Firouzabadi, taunted those very members of Congress, stating that the hostage situation on Farsi Island should “be a lesson” to them.

  19. ROME : Bergoglio welcomes several thousand refugees at St. Peter’s Square

Bergoglio addressed a mass gathering at St. Peter’s Square in Rome on Sunday, many of the crowd comprised of both migrants and asylum-seekers that had come to hear him on his traditional Sunday appearance. The Catholic Church had dedicated the day to the plight of refugees worldwide with Bergoglio using the opportunity to speak at the gathering which attracted several thousand to instill hope and encouragement.

“Dear brothers and sisters. Today marks the World Day of Migrants and Refugees, which, in the context of the Holy Year of Mercy, is also celebrated as the Jubilee of Migrants. I am pleased, therefore, to greet with great affection the ethnic communities present here.”

“Dear migrants and refugees, each of you carries a history, a culture, precious values; and often, unfortunately, experiences of poverty, oppression and fear. Your presence in this square is a sign of hope in God. Do not allow yourselves to be robbed of hope and the joy of living, resulting from the experience of divine mercy, also thanks to the people who greet you and help you.”

  20. Bulgaria: Crowds wave Nazi flag at anti-refugee protest in Burgas

A flag depicting the ‘Imperial Eagle’, a symbol of the Third Reich, was waved among a crowd of Bulgarian nationalists protesting against refugees in Burgas on Saturday.

SOT, Plamen Ivanov, protester from Burgas (Bulgarian): “Because I see what’s happening in France, in Germany, and I don’t want this to happen here. If this happens here, it will become a fair. We aren’t like German people and take many victims. We can’t let this to happen with women, with children, with old people. So we come out to say that it’s not good these people to come here. We don’t want to let in these kind of people and we don’t want them to come.”

SOT, Ivan Georgiev, protester from Burgas (Bulgarian): “We won’t sell Bulgaria and we won’t admit our State, our enslaver, to sell it. We’re gathered here today because few days ago, they sold our air space. We want this contract to be immediately stopped, because Turkish airplanes fly over our country. 10 million healthy and strong refugees from 18-old to 40-old wait for us on the South border. We don’t have army, we don’t have army and tanks, we want an immediate mobilization of the army, to be admitted law for conscription. We want this to happen immediately, because the protest will expand to all Bulgarian cities and will turn into civil insubordination.”

  21. Afghanistan: 13 killed, 15 injured in suspected suicide blast in Jalalabad

  22. DAILY MAIL – ‘It’s impossible to integrate the Muslim community into Western Europe,’ says Czech president

Czech president Milos Zeman, 71, is known for anti-immigrant outburst
He said integration of the Muslim community is practically impossible’
Also blamed Cologne attacks on allowing ‘Muslim culture’ in Europe

The president of the Czech Republic has claimed it is ‘impossible’ for Muslims to integrate into modern Europe.

Speaking on local TV, President Milos Zeman also blamed the New Years Eve sex attacks in Cologne, Germany, on ‘Muslim culture’.

Zeman is known for his fiery anti-migrant comments and has previously accused refugees ‘with iPhones’ of exploiting their children to get asylum in the EU.

‘The experience of Western European countries which have ghettos and excluded localities shows that the integration of the Muslim community is practically impossible,’ Zeman said in a televised interview Sunday.

‘Let them have THEIR culture in THEIR countries and not take it to Europe, otherwise it will end up like Cologne,’ he added, referring to the mass New Year’s Eve assaults on women in Germany and elsewhere.

‘Integration is possible with cultures that are similar, and the similarities may vary,’ pointing out that the Vietnamese and Ukrainian communities had been able to integrate into Czech society.

Zeman, a 71-year-old leftwinger and the first-ever directly elected president of the Czech Republic, has repeatedly spoken out against the surge of migrant and refugee arrivals in Europe.

Earlier this month, Zeman claimed the influx was masterminded by Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood which uses money from several states to finance it in a bid to ‘gradually control Europe’.

It followed controversial statements accusing refugees and migrants of risking their children’s lives crossing the Mediterranean in order to use them to secure a right to remain in the EU.

‘They[children] serve as human shields for guys with iPhones to justify the wave of migrants,’ Zeman said in an interview with a Czech tabloid in November.

‘Those hiding behind the children … in my opinion, do not deserve any compassion. They bring the children over in rubber dingys, knowing they might drown.’

Late last year, Zeman called the surge in refugee numbers ‘an organised invasion,’ urging young men from Iraq and Syria to ‘take up arms’ against the Islamic State (IS) group instead of running away.

More than one million migrants reached Europe in 2015, most of them refugees fleeing war and violence in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, according to the United Nations refugee agency.

But few asylum seekers have chosen to stay in the largely secular Czech Republic, an EU and NATO member of 10.5 million people, with the majority heading to wealthier Germany and other western EU states.

Statistics published in July last year, showed that only 409 people were seeking asylum in the central European nation, with some 3,100 refugees living in the country.

  23. REVEALED: Obama Was Not Constitutional Scholar… Here’s What He REALLY Did At Univ. Of Chicago

(Allen West) – I had to cringe during a particularly elitist remark that left Obama’s mouth during his rteary town-hall on gun control; “I believe in the Second Amendment. It is there, written on the paper. It guarantees a right to bear arms. No matter how many times people try to twist my words around — I taught constitutional law, I know a little bit about this — I get it.”

Well, a colleague of Obama’s at the University of Chicago, economist John Lott quoted Obama as having told him that he doesn’t believe that people should be able to own guns when the two worked together in the 1990s. So the belief in the Second Amendment is questionable, but lets turn to his second claim, that he taught constitutional law.

As Karin McQuillan at the American Thinker writes, that claim is deceptive:

Obama was never a professor; he was a lecturer. He did not have the qualifications to be a professor. Obama never published a single law paper. He was hired by the University of Chicago when they learned he had been given a book contract on race and law directly after graduating from Harvard. There was no book – just the contract, which he later reneged on. This is not the normal level of accomplishment for a University of Chicago professor or even lecturer.

So what did he teach at UChicago?

Obama did not specialize in the Constitution. Obama cared about and taught only one subject: race. One course was about race in the Constitution. It is on this flimsy basis that he attempts to pawn himself off as a constitutional scholar.

As the New York Times explains, Obama the lecturer taught three subjects only: “race, rights and gender.”

Major German political parties want to accelerate the deportation of asylum seekers from Algeria and Morroco, a Sunday newspaper reports. The two North African countries have not been cooperative.

Asylum seekers from Algeria and Morocco are likely to soon be placed in one-stop reception and deportation centers from which they could be quickly expelled from Germany, according to a report in the “Welt am Sonntag” newspaper.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party the Christian Social Union (CSU) have agreed to consider Algerians and Moroccans as coming from “safe countries of origin,” a designation that will help speed up their deportation after a sharp rise in asylum applications from the two countries during the past year.

Currently, nearly all asylum applications from Algerians and Moroccans are denied, but nationals from the two North African countries undergo a several months long evaluation process during which they are divided among Germany’s 16 federal states.

Germany’s overburdened system rejects nearly 1,000 asylum applications per day, but the federal states are “obligated” to deport, Peter Tauber, secretary general of Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) said last week.

However, deportations are rarely carried out. In 2015, only some 18,000 rejected asylum seekers were deported. Of 5,500 rejected asylum applications from Moroccans and Algerians in the first half of last year, only 53 were deported, according to an internal government paper.

Now, the CDU and CSU have agreed to put nationals from the Algeria and Morocco in special deportation facilities and process applications within weeks, the “Welt am Sonntag” reported. The CDU/CSU coalition partner, Social Democrats, will need to sign off on the plan.

The policy could even go into effect before Algeria and Morocco are officially labeled “safe countries of origin.”

The new regulation would put Algerians and Moroccans in a similar category as asylum seekers from Balkan countries, who also have little chance of receiving asylum.

Faced with an influx of asylum seekers from war-torn countries like Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, Germany’s government last year moved to declare Balkan countries “safe” and expedite the deportation of nationals from those countries through placement in repatriation centers. The policy led to a significant drop in asylum seekers from the Balkans coming to Germany and more deportations.

The numbers of Algerian asylum seekers rose from 847 in June to 2,296 in December, while those from Morocco jumped from 368 to 2,896.

    Algeria and Morocco uncooperative

In the case of Algeria and Morocco, however, Germany faces difficulties. Germany has complained the two countries are not cooperating in taking back their nationals.

Merkel raised the issue last week with her Algerian counterpart Abdelmalek Sellal when he visited. However, the Algerian premier said it was essential to first “ensure that they really are Algerians,” a reference to the fact that the majority of asylum seekers come to Germany without papers.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier have written to their Moroccan and Algerian counterparts to say that there needs to be better cooperation.

    Sexual assaults

The renewed emphasis on Algerians and Moroccans comes as the government is getting blowback over its open-door refugee policy after hundreds of women were robbed and sexually assaulted on New Year’s Eve in Cologne and other cities.

The assaults were allegedly carried out by what was described as Arab and North African men. The vast majority of the nearly 20 suspects identified by police so far have been from Morocco or Algeria.

On Saturday, police in Dusseldorf conducted a major operation against North African gangs suspected of pick-pocketing, robbery and drug dealing.

Germany wants Algeria and Morocco to take back their nationals with no residence permits in Germany

But the German authorities have in recent weeks flagged problems in expelling Algerians and Moroccans, saying their countries of origin were often unwilling to take them back because of missing identity documents.

[…]Cologne police said 652 complaints have been filed over the violence, including 331 relating to sexual violence.

Of 19 suspects identified by Cologne police so far, 14 are from Morocco or Algeria.

The mayor of Harrisburg, Penn., ordered his police department on Friday not to provide security for an upcoming NRA-sponsored gun show after the association refused to meet a demand to pay a 60-percent increase in fees for the service.

Harrisburg police have provided security for the annual Great American Outdoors Show, scheduled this year for February 6-14, in the past. Mayor Eric Papenfuse said that the decision not to offer the department’s services this year was motivated in part by the NRA’s opposition to the city’s gun control policies.

“We have an epidemic of gun violence,” Papenfuse told WHTM. “It’s no secret that the NRA has worked against the city’s interests repeatedly over the past year causing us to spend tens of thousands of dollars to defend common sense gun ordinances. We don’t need to be doing them any favors.”

An NRA spokesman said that despite payments of $600,000 directly to the city since 2014, the mayor wanted the gun rights group to pay additional fees in order to obtain police protection for the show.

“Unfortunately, demands were made by the mayor for the 2016 show that included a 60 percent increase in fees to [the police department] to work the show and a requirement of a $50,000 grant for five years to the city,” Jeremy Greene, an NRA spokesman, said in a statement. “This offer was presented as all or nothing. If we did not accept, the mayor would pull [police] support.”

Greene said that the NRA offered to increase its donation to the city in exchange for police patrols of the show but the mayor’s office wasn’t satisfied by the amount offered. “We are disappointed our more than generous offer was declined, but we are mostly disappointed that the officers we have worked with the last two years will be the ones most hurt,” he said.

  26. M A L T A – Minister condemns ‘lies’ as ‘patriots’ hand out pork during anti-Islam protest

The self-styled organisation of Maltese patriots (Ghaqda Patrijotti Maltin) handed out pork sandwiches for free during a protest in Msida against a group of Muslims who have recently started praying in the village square.

Patriots’ leader Alex Pisani told the crowd of some 200 protestors that their decision to hand out the sandwiches was “an act of solidarity” with children of the St Paul’s Bay primary school who he said are forbidden from eating pork at school due to its high population of Muslim students.

[…]Pisani warned that the Maltese race will be destroyed if Muslim women “continue breeding at such a fast rate”.

“Look at the Muslim women in the street, many of them have around five children,” he said.

“We have one religion in Malta, which is Roman Catholicism, and we don’t want Muslims praying in public,” Pisani said, urging people present to sign a petition against forced integration and to refrain from passing racist comments to the press.

He called on the government to follow France’s lead and ban the burqa from public spaces due to it being a “threat to security” and warned that Sliema “has become like Saudi Arabia”.

[…]The majority of Maltese people don’t want them to pray in public, and common sense dictates that they shouldn’t proceed with an activity that upsets the majority, he said. “They say that they don’t have enough locations in which to pray, but I spproach it from another angle and say that there are too many Muslims in Malta and that those who are here illegally should be sent back home.”

[…]“If the Muslims aren’t satisfied with the number of mosques in Malta, then they should get out of the country.”

  27. Iran to receive $1.7 billion from the US in a claim settlement

The United States and Iran on Sunday settled a longstanding claim at the Hague, releasing to Tehran $400 million in funds frozen since 1981 plus $1.3 billion in interest, the State Department said.

The funds were part of a trust fund once used by Iran to purchase military equipment from the United States but which was tied up for decades in litigation at the Iran-US Claims Tribunal.

The settlement announcement was made after Tehran released five American detainees in a prisoner swap as a nuclear deal was implemented.

  28. CANADA – Muslim community starts ‘Demystify Islam’ campaign across Canada

SASKATOON – Many believe the aftermath of recent terrorist attacks in Jakarta, San Bernadino and Paris have left a wake of “islamophobia” in Canada. In response to these attacks, the Ahmadiyya Muslim community has started a national campaign called ‘Demystify Islam’.

“What they see on TV and other outlets they are miscarried and they are misinformed about Islam,” Ahmadiyya Muslim Imam Khalid Minhas said.

During the campaign, the community will hold over 130 open houses and make almost 300 visits to 35 towns across Canada. By engaging the public in peaceful discussions and education, the Muslim community is hoping to prevent future hate crimes.

“Give them the opportunity to meet a Muslim person, have a conversation over coffee and get to know each other and realize Islam is all about peace,” media spokesperson Noman Hassan said.

John Butcher, a Martensville resident, came to the open house Saturday and said it was the perfect opportunity to get the facts for himself.

“I think some people are pretty nervous, we’ve heard a lot of bad news. There have been politicians who have said bad things. It’s better to come to this and actually get the facts. Find out what people really believe,” Butcher said.

The Demystify Islam campaign will continue throughout 2016. The community says their next stop is Warman, Sask.

  30. Iran: US imposes new sanctions over missile test (BBC, Jan 17, 2016)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-35338901

“The US has imposed fresh sanctions on Iranian companies and individuals over a recent ballistic missile test.

The new sanctions prevent 11 entities and individuals linked to the missile programme from using the US banking system.

The move came after international nuclear sanctions on Iran were lifted as part of a deal hailed by President Barack Obama on Sunday as “smart”.

Four American-Iranians were also freed in a prisoner swap as part of the deal.

Among them was Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian – whom President Obama described as “courageous”. A fifth American was freed separately….

They were triggered by Iran conducting a precision-guided ballistic missile test capable of delivering a nuclear warhead last October, violating a United Nations ban.

“Iran’s ballistic missile programme poses a significant threat to regional and global security, and it will continue to be subject to international sanctions,” said Adam J Szubin, US acting under-secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence.

Moments later, President Obama hailed the nuclear deal, which is being implemented following verification by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that Iran had restricted its sensitive nuclear activities….”

“New York City police were investigating on Sunday an assault on a man who was pummeled by suspects shouting “ISIS, ISIS,” leaving him with bruises on his head and face, authorities said.

The 43-year-old man was attacked while walking with a nine-year-old girl in the Bronx around 5:30 p.m. on Friday, according to the New York City Police Department.

He was punched several times in the head, knocked down and kicked, police said. The victim, whose name was not given, was treated for injuries at a hospital and released.

He had been wearing a shalwar kameez, a traditional South Asian outfit featuring a long tunic, the New York Times reported.

The attack comes amid increasing anxiety in the United States over the threat posed by Islamic State, also known as ISIS, which has claimed responsibility for militant attacks around the world.

A Muslim couple inspired by the group killed 14 people on Dec. 2 in San Bernardino, California, just weeks after gunmen linked to Islamic State killed 130 people in Paris.

No one was immediately arrested in the New York assault, which is under investigation by the police department’s Hate Crime Task Force, the agency said in a statement on Saturday.”

Last sentence above illustrates my desire to be invited to Mosaic some day. It's a real classy rag.

    Does Europe Have a Future?
It’s both a continent and an idea, with an alternately heroic and ignominious past and, until recently, an enviable present. Can the heart of the West survive the 21st century?

    http://mosaicmagazine.com/essay/2016/01/does-europe-have-a-future/

    • Nationalism isn’t an invention of the Europeans it was around a lot longer then the European nations have existed.

The Strength of the US is that the people in all states are willing to enlist and fight for the entire union, the weakness of the EU is that the people in Northern Europe aren’t willing to fight and die for the people in the South. For this reason an alliance of nations is what is needed, not a union of nations.

  38. DEUTSCHE WELLE – Germany’s Vatican ambassador: ‘Islam is part of the solution’

Germany’s ambassador to the Vatican, Annette Schavan, still sees religion as a peacemaker, despite wars and terrorism. In an interview with DW, she calls for more interfaith dialogue and respect between all religions.

Deutsche Welle: After the New Year’s Eve harassment incidents in Cologne, a highly charged atmosphere with regard to migrants has developed in Germany. How do people in Rome assess the events in Germany?

Annette Schavan: The Vatican knows about all the new attempts to exploit religion as a justification for violence. Germany is viewed as a country that does a lot for refugees. The pope has explicitly commended this in his New Year’s speech.

Can religion today still serve as a peacemaker or has it already become a driving force behind wars?

There are warmongers who embrace religion. But that does not mean that religion promotes war. Religion has the great power to bring peace. People are upset by the numerous attacks and wonder, “Should we equate these images of violence with Islam?” One gets the impression that Islam is part of the problem. But that’s not true. It must become clear that it is part of the solution.

The pope has called on all Christians to take in refugees. In the current situation, does that sound like utopian neighborly love?

Germany has set an excellent example with its “culture of welcome,” which is still not a thing of the past. Of course, many people are anxious. That is exactly what the terrorists want. They do not want a culture of welcome for refugees. One of the things the refugees are fleeing is the terrorists. If we consider integration and welcoming culture to be utopian, then the terrorists have achieved a great deal.

In your term as Germany’s minister of education, you established the first chairs of Islamic theology at German universities. Does a dialogue of religions take place there now?

I founded Islamic theological faculties because theological education is needed in order to establish dialogue. This is significant, as criticismis also involved here. Using a historico-critical method to interpret the scriptures is important. Germany has the potential to be the country that brings advances in theology. Even in Christianity, critical bible studies have only existed for a little over 100 years. The four institutes of Islamic theology that we now have in Germany are just the beginning for me.

Do we need a theological confrontation with radical Islamists? Must their theories be refuted with arguments from the Koran?

That debate is already taking place among Islamic theologians. It is crucial that representatives of a contemporary theology that can last into the future find acceptance and are not seen as outsiders. Such approaches can be developed at the German university faculties.

The Vatican seeks dialogue with Jews, Orthodox Christians, Protestant Christians and Muslims. Could it also mediate between Shiites and Sunnis?

The pope is a great moral authority whose sphere of influence reaches beyond the Catholic world. Because he acts as a peacemaker and reconciler, people from all cultures feel he is the voice of conscience, and they yearn for religion in the 21st century to unite and not divide.

Not only Muslims are fleeing war and oppression from their homeland. Christians are also being persecuted in many Muslim countries. Is their suffering at the hands of Islamist terrorists at risk of being pushed into the background?

Christians are currently the most persecuted religious group. That must be said clearly. But Muslims are also persecuted for their faith. Freedom of religion is for everyone. That must also be said clearly. It is the political responsibility of every society to protect this freedom.

DW’s Astrid Prange conducted the interview

Annette Schavan has been the German ambassador to the Vatican since 2014. When she served as Germany’s minister for education and research (2005 to 2013), the Catholic and Christian Democrat politician established the first chairs of Islamic theology at the universities of Tübingen, Münster, Osnabrück and Erlangen.
