  1. DOUGLAS MURRAY : Cologne exposes a crisis in our continent, yet parliament is debating Donald Trump

    Europe is going through a period of radical change, but it is facing this with a process of radical self-distraction. Unwilling to face up to our problems we obsess over the responses to those problems. There have been some startling recent examples.

    As the whole world now knows, on New Year’s Eve in Cologne, dozens of German women were sexually assaulted, apparently by some of that country’s more recent arrivals. For days the media across Europe declined to even report the story. It was only because of new media that the story began to get out at all. Then when the media did get around to reporting the story they covered it in that now-familiar way which suggests their job is not so much to report the facts as to negotiate between the facts and their fear over how the general public might react to those facts. Perhaps we should be grateful that there is any coverage a week after the attacks. After all, it took more than a decade for 1500 rapes in the north of England to make much news.

    Yesterday the Guardian (where any male doing anything is usually a demonstration of ‘rape culture’) finally ran a piece suggesting that perhaps we shouldn’t cover up actual, real rape-culture such as that in Cologne, conceding that it hadn’t helped much with Rotherham. The piece was predictably hailed as brave and controversial because today it has indeed become brave and controversial to report the facts. Thinking aloud about any of the repercussions of those facts, however, remains the pursuit only of a madman.

    This is a shame, because some free thought and discussion about what is going on could have been useful at an earlier stage. Last year, when Angela Merkel flung open Germany’s borders anyone who said, ‘Are you sure you know what you’re doing?’ was shouted down with cries of ‘racist’. Then, after about a million more people had come into the country even Chancellor Merkel started to wonder who they all were and whether they had all the right Germanic ideas. One minister finally said that they weren’t keen on letting many more anti-Semites into Germany. And now in the wake of the New Year’s Eve attack some politicians are saying they don’t really want people who aren’t even up to speed with even last millennia’s views on women. Perhaps it is too late and German women will indeed have to follow the advice of the Mayor of Cologne and take more care when out on the streets (‘No skirts. No trousers. Have you considered this lovely burka madam?’) Or perhaps an intensive period of workshops with new arrivals will settle it all amicably and swiftly. I suppose we will just have to hope so. In the meantime it turns out that the German police have been caught mis-representing the facts about who was doing the New Year’s Eve raping., and so we are now in the far more dangerous place where lies become the preserve not only of the fourth estate, but of the state itself.

    Later this month the House of Commons will discuss the urgent issue of Mr Trump. This is because last month Trump said that he wanted to stop Muslim immigration into the US and added that Britain and Europe have a serious Muslim extremism problem. Because of this more than half a million people signed a petition calling for Trump to be barred from Britain. This now has to be debated in Parliament and doubtless all those MPs who rarely do much about problems they could deal with will grandstand their opposition to a foreign politician who doesn’t care what they think. In the last week we have been reminded that the British government not only doesn’t know who is coming into our country, but doesn’t even know who is leaving either. Still, it’s all fine so long as we divert ourselves by talking Trump.

    Millions of people whose identities and beliefs are unknown have been let into our continent. Many who have been here for a few years continue to present challenges which are by no means minimal. There seems to be a belief that so long as we have got Katie Hopkins, Donald Trump or Tommy Robinson to kick around then we can focus our energies on ignoring the problem.

    Of course all one can do is warn. But it seems to me that, if we keep distracting ourselves from the problem and beating up on every response to it, then this continent of ours is going to go very bad, very fast.<

      Newspapers have to abide by the European Convention of Human Rights Act to thus behave exactly like Soviet propagandists:

      When does a State get to decide it represents the ‘Democratic Peoples’? The idea that you have a perfect society – to decide you must now enshrine and protect – is a totalitarian one.

      Instead of the inner light of the individual freedom on conscience as enshrined in the American Bill of Rights, Europe has two external voices: The rights citizens to “express” themselves matched against the rights of the State to maintain order. Governments don’t get overthown in this kingdom. The lions lay down with the sheep.

When the pendulum of freedom no longer swings to the rights of individuals but remains with the rights of governments – imprisoning by hate crimes and Political Correctness – that is Communism.     “A Turkish human rights group says as many as 162 civilians have died since August, caught up in the increased fighting between government forces and Kurdish rebels in urban districts.

    The Turkish Human Rights Foundation said late Saturday that 32 children, 29 women and 24 elderly people were among civilians killed in districts where authorities have imposed 24-hour curfews as they battle militants linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK.

    The security forces have launched large-scale operations in areas where the militants have mounted barricades, dug trenches and set up explosives to keep authorities away. Turkish authorities say 426 militants have died in ongoing operations in the towns of Cizre and Silopi and Diyarbakir’s Sur neighborhood.

    The conflict against the PKK resumed in July, shattering a two-year-old peace process.”

    Nasser Mohammed al-Obeidi – the second deputy of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi – was reportedly wiped out by the Iraqi bombing, according to Iraq’s Joint Operations Command (IJOC).

    Al-Obeidi – who was once a once a brigade commander for former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein’s special forces unit, the Republican Guards – was in charge of the depraved death cult’s operations in western Iraq and eastern Syria.

    The twisted jihadi was also a fugitive from Abu Graib prison and a former inmate in Camp Buqqa, according to IJOC spokesman Colonel Mohammed Ibrahim.

    His reported death comes just days after ISIS spokesman in Iraq Abu Mohammed al-Adnani was said to have been severely injured in another airstrike.

    It urges home-grown terrorists to carry out attacks as they are less likely to be noticed.

    It also explains how nightclubs, full of loud music and drunk people, are the perfect place to discuss terror plans without being recorded or snooped on.

    The main thrust of the instruction booklet is the necessity to blend in with the western way of life and to avoid ‘looking like a Muslim’ so as to stay below the radar of the security services.

    It has even been translated into English for those in the West who don’t speak Arabic.

    The introduction says: “No doubt that today, at the era of the lone wolves, brothers in the West need to know some important things about safety in order to ensure success in their operations.

    “We thought a lot of non-Arabic speaking brothers would find it interesting and may apply it in their blessed operations.”

    Readers are urged to wear a Christian cross, splash on the aftershave, cut off beards and even shun prayer meetings and mosques to avoid detection.

    There is even advice about what jewellery to wear and on which hand to wear a watch.

    Potential terrorists are told: “If you can avoid having a beard, wearing qamis, using miswak and having a booklet of dhikr with you, it’s better.

    “It is permissible for you to wear a necklace showing a Christian cross.

    “As you know, Christians – or even atheist Westerners with Christian background – wear crosses on their necklaces.

    “But don’t wear a cross necklace if you have a Muslim name on your passport, as that may look strange.

    “If you want to use perfume, don’t use the oily, non-alcoholic perfume that Muslims use, instead use generic alcoholic perfume as everyone does, and if you are a man, use perfume for men.

    “If you are wearing a watch, don’t wear it on your right hand, as this is a sign that you are religious.

    “If you have an engagement ring or something like that, it’s better to wear one in gold or better yet, don’t wear any ring at all.

    “A silver ring could tell you are religious, as Islam forbids wearing gold rings for men. “

    It also offers advice on grooming habits…..”

    ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has told U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry his country is swiftly investigating who was behind last week’s attack on an Indian air force base, and that it would “bring out the truth”.

    The assault on the base near the Pakistan border has thrown into doubt diplomatic talks planned for later this month between the nuclear-armed rivals.

    Kerry, speaking to Sharif by telephone, said he hoped the attack would not derail the talks that he said were in the interests of regional security, according to a statement from the Pakistani prime minister’s office late on Saturday.

    “The Prime Minister told Secretary Kerry that we are swiftly carrying out investigations in a transparent manner and will bring out the truth,” it said. “The world will see our effectiveness and sincerity in this regard.”

    A meeting between the foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan had been scheduled for Jan. 15, but it is unclear if it will still happen, after six militants launched an assault on Jan. 2 against the base and killed seven security personnel.

    TOKYO (Reuters) – Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Sunday he aimed to get a two-thirds majority from his ruling bloc and like-minded opposition parties at an upper house election this summer to enable him to revise the constitution.

    Abe has made clear he wants to revise the U.S.-drafted, pacifist constitution, but formal amendment requires approval by two-thirds of both houses of parliament and a majority in a referendum.

    Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its junior coalition partner, the Komeito party, already command a two-thirds majority in the lower house, but only hold a simple majority in the upper chamber.

    “It will be very difficult for the ruling bloc alone to win a two-thirds majority,” Abe told a TV news program.

    “Besides the LDP and Komeito, I aim to form a two-thirds majority with those positive and responsible people who are thinking of a constitutional revision.”

    Abe mentioned “Osaka Ishin No Kai”, or the Osaka Innovation Party, as one possible partner backing the revision.

    • What far right political parties? The only ones I am aware of that match that based on the common tinking of the term and not the real one of course, is Hungary’s Jobic and Greece’s Golden Dawn. The rest are just parties that want a return to a classical liberal Europe, healthy borders and the enjoyment of their each unique culture. In fact a return to freedom and diversity like Geert Wilder’s PVV etc. They are labeled “far Right extremist” but if you listen to Geert he doesnt say anything hippies didn’t say in the 1960s and if he was around then they would have called him a ‘commie pinko fag’ for suggesting homosexuals and Jews should be allowed to walk the streets free of fear.

      Yes liberal parties are getting votes because of anti diversity, lets all be commie muslim politics. But that’s a great thing. Now lets see if the system is rigged.

    “A senior Arab official has called on Arab states to take a “clear stance” against Iran’s alleged meddling in Arab affairs.

    Emirati Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, speaking Sunday at an emergency Arab League session, accused the Islamic Republic of intentionally failing to protect Saudi diplomatic posts.

    The session was requested by Saudi Arabia to discuss the attacks, which were a response to the kingdom’s execution of a prominent Shiite cleric earlier this month. The crisis has seen Saudi Arabia and several Arab states cut or reduce diplomatic ties with Iran.

    Al Nahyan, who heads the Arab ambassadors’ council, said the attack “took place under the nose and within the earshot of security forces.””

    “Afghan forces are struggling to man the front lines against a resurgent Taliban, in part because of untold numbers of “ghost” troops who are paid salaries but only exist on paper.

    The nationwide problem has been particularly severe in the southern Helmand province, where the Taliban have seized vast tracts of territory in the 12 months since the U.S. and NATO formally ended their combat mission and switched to training and support.

    “At checkpoints where 20 soldiers should be present, there are only eight or 10,” said Karim Atal, head of Helmand’s provincial council. “It’s because some people are getting paid a salary but not doing the job because they are related to someone important, like a local warlord.”

    In some cases, the “ghost” designation is more literal — dead soldiers and police remain on the books, with senior police or army officials pocketing their salaries without replacing them, Atal said.

    He estimates that some 40 percent of registered forces don’t exist, and says the lack of manpower has helped the Taliban seize 65 percent of the province — Afghanistan’s largest — and threaten the provincial capital, Lashkar Gah. Those men who do serve face even greater danger because of the no-shows. In the last three months alone, some 700 police have been killed and 500 wounded, he said.

    The province’s former deputy police chief, Pacha Gul Bakhtiar, said Helmand has 31,000 police on the registers, “but in reality it is nowhere near that.”

    Nearly 15 years after the U.S.-led invasion that toppled the Taliban, and despite billions of dollars in military and other aid, corruption remains rife in Afghanistan and local security forces have struggled to hold off insurgent advances across the country. Last year the Taliban seized the northern city of Kunduz for three days, marking their biggest foray into a major urban area since 2001…”

  12. Obamas invite Syrian refugee to State of the Union Address

    President Obama is taking a dramatic step to show he opposes Republican efforts to slow or halt the admission of refugees over terrorist concerns: He has invited a Syrian refugee to attend his State of the Union Address.

    Refaai Hamo, 55, a native of Syria now living in Detroit, will sit in first lady Michelle Obama’s box in the House of Representatives gallery for Tuesday night’s speech. Hamo drew international attention last month after he was featured in the popular blog “Humans of New York.”

    The scientist fled Syria’s civil war in 2013 after his family home was destroyed by a bomb, killing his wife, daughter and five other relatives. He developed stomach cancer and had trouble getting treatment in Turkey, where he and millions of other Syrians have fled. After two years, he was approved for refugee status in the United States and arrived in Detroit last month.

    His ordeal prompted Obama to call him “an inspiration,” and actor Edward Norton organized a fundraising drive for him.

    “I was thrilled when I heard that President Barack Obama is welcoming us into the United States,” Hamo said in a statement. “I felt that hope was revived as well as the strength to continue my dreams and ambition in my new country. I am so proud and honored to be in this country and look forward to one day becoming an American citizen so that we can be part of making America a strong and great country.”

    The invitation creates a sharp contrast to Republicans who want to block refugees from war-ravaged Middle East nations because Islamic State radicals and other terrorists might try to sneak into the country by claiming refugee status.

    Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump has called for a temporary ban on admitting Muslims until the U.S. government can “figure out what is going on.” House Republicans passed a bill in November to temporarily halt Syrian and Iraqi refugee programs and to screen future applicants more carefully.

    Those fears ramped up when a group of Syrians was caught along the southwestern border and another group of U.S.-bound Syrians was stopped in Honduras using fake passports. Last week, the arrest of two Iraqi-born refugees in the United States on terrorism charges brought the issue back to the forefront.

    “It’s like my grandfather said, if there’s a hole in the bucket, turn the spigot off first, then fix the bucket,” Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., co-author of the SAFE Act passed by the House, said on MSNBC’s MTP Daily on Friday.

    The White House says such a delay is unnecessary because the screening process for people from Syria, Iraq and other countries inhabited by Islamist extremists is already strong enough to ensure the security of the homeland. Refugees from Syria, for example, go through 18 to 24 months of interviews and background checks before they’re granted refugee status in the U.S.

    The State Department says that the vast majority of Syrian refugees admitted are women and children and that only a tiny fraction fit the typical terrorist profile: single, young men.

    On Friday, White House press secretary Josh Earnest said any attempt to halt that program and screen people based on “some sort of religious test” is wrong.

    “It doesn’t represent who we are as a country,” Earnest said. “And most importantly, it’s not going to keep us safe.”

    Material found at flat where Abdelhamid Abaaoud was killed by French police days after atrocities that killed 130 people reveals he had taken pictures of UK landmarks

    The Islamic State commander who planned the terror atrocities in Paris entered the UK by ferry earlier last year to meet other jihadis, the Guardian has learned, in the latest border security blunder to emerge on Theresa May’s watch.[…]

    Abaaoud, a 27-year-old Belgian, was killed in a shootout with French security forces days after he led the Paris attacks in November; digital material recovered from his possessions revealed the British trip. He was the head of an Isis unit set up to send European jihadis back to their home countries to carry out terrorist attacks.

    On Abaaoud’s phone were photographs of his UK visit, including landmarks, which some in the European intelligence community have interpreted as being taken for the purpose of planning a terrorist attack. Others are less convinced. The pictures were taken while Abaaoud and the phone were physically in the UK.

    […]Abaaoud, who was born in Morocco, was linked with several terrorist plots in Europe and was thought to have been in Syria with Isis since late last year. He was named in European and international arrest warrants but travelled through Europe apparently without being detained.

    In July this year, Abaaoud was sentenced in absentia by a Belgian court to 20 years in prison for his leading role as a recruiter of European jihadis for Isis.

    A Home Office spokesperson said: “We can neither confirm or deny information related to issues of national security.” The Metropolictan police declined to comment.

    West Midlands police said the reports were speculative but its assistant chief constable and head of counter-terrorism, Marcus Beale, has previously said the force – which covers Birmingham – is “working hand-in-hand with counter-terrorism colleagues in London, the national CT [counter-terrorism] network and security services to provide support to the French and Belgian investigations, and of course to address any associated terrorism threat to the UK.”

    • I heard from the people who live in Sweden but are not Swedish, that in Swedish society people do not talk about traumatic or controversial things. One simply can not have a conversation with strangers, co-workers or even close friends about such things. If somebody starts to talk about controversial things one can not only loose ones job, but one also looses friends. It is simply not to be done.,

      • If thats true, then they deserve to lose it. Seriously. I mean if they have culturally banished freedom of speech and made it impossible to have a free exhchange of ideas about important issues they will get taken over by some group that does talk about these things and act on them. Its a shame it will be muslims but it was going to be someone no matter what.

        But then again, Swedish SD is ahead of the polls. So existential fear may actually trump (so to speak) political correctness.

    H A M B U R G police record 133 cases of New Year violence

    Berlin (AFP) – Police in the northern German city of Hamburg said Sunday they have recorded 133 cases of offences including sexual assaults allegedly committed against women during New Year’s celebrations.

    Investigators have not identified any suspects for the assaults that allegedly took place at the port city’s party avenue Reeperbahn.

    But victims have described the perpetrators as having “African, Arab, or south European appearance”, a police spokesman told AFP.

    “It can of course be possible that the perpetrators belong to one group, but at the moment, the descriptions are different,” said the spokesman, when asked if a parallel could be drawn to the assaults reported in Cologne, on a far larger scale, where assailants are allegedly of North African origin.

    Germany was stunned this week by a rash of assaults during New Year’s festivities, with Cologne police recording almost 400 cases that ranged from groping to theft to two reported rapes.

    Police have said North African asylum seekers and illegal migrants are the main suspects in the Cologne rampage, inflaming a debate in Germany over whether it could integrate 1.1 million asylum seekers who arrived last year.

    Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday took a firm line against convicted asylum seekers, saying she backed changes to the law to allow the deportation of all those handed jail time, even if it is only a suspended sentence.

    Minister of Justice Heiko Maas has said he believes the sexual assaults in Cologne were ‘coordinated and prepared’ ahead of time. He also accused xenophobic groups of using the crimes to stir up hatred.

    In an interview with the popular “Bild am Sonntag” newspaper, Maas voiced his suspicions that the crimes which have the whole country reeling were not the result of an opportunistic mob mentality but a thought-out, planned attack on the city’s women.

    “No one can tell me that it wasn’t coordinated and prepared,” the minister said. “My suspicion is that this specific date was picked, and a certain number of people expected. This would again add another dimension [to the crimes].”

    Maas was careful to echo his colleagues, however, when it came to warning the public against placing blame on the country’s immigrants, saying “to assume from somebody’s origin whether or not they are delinquent is quite reckless.” The minister added that it is “complete nonsense” to take these crimes as evidence that foreigners cannot be integrated into German society.

    Maas also accused the far-right populists of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, along with the organizers of the xenophobic PEGIDA marches, of using Cologne for propaganda purposes.

    “There is the only way they can explainhow shamelessly they operate their sweeping campaign against foreigners,” Maas said, referring to Saturday’s PEGIDA demonstration at the Cologne train station, which was itself met with a flashmob of counter-protesters condemning racism and sexism.

    The Op-Ed in Newsweek weekly magazine further added “Why does the Pakistani military want to maintain cooperative relations with the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani network? This policy likely stems from some combination of opportunism and fear. It sees the Taliban/Haqqani as surrogate forces that could protect and advance Pakistani interests in Afghanistan, while combating Indian influence.”

    “But Pakistani authorities also fear that if they put too much pressure on the Afghan Taliban, it might join forces with the Pakistani Taliban in the latter’s effort to overthrow the Pakistani government and introduce a radical Islamist regime,” the two diplomats added.

    The Op-Ed has been published as efforts underway to draw a road map for the Afghan reconciliation process with the representatives of the United States, China, Afghanistan and Pakistan to meet in Islamabad on Monday.

    The two diplomats argued that US and Afghanistan should focus less on fostering talks and more on persuading Pakistan to take action against those engaged in terrorism and violence.

    Muslim officials in Kentucky say the vandalism was motivated by bias against Islam but law enforcement says perpetrators left no symbols to indicate hate

    A mosque in western Kentucky was vandalized on Friday, but law enforcement officials said the vandalism had been carried out with ketchup and they did not think it was a hate crime.

    The Council on American-Islamic Relations said in a statement on Sunday that it was calling on law enforcement to investigate red markings at the Islamic Center of Owensboro as a possible hate crime.

    The statement said officials at the mosque believed the vandalism was motivated by bias against Islam.

    Cair spokesman Ibrahim Hooper noted an increase in anti-mosque incidents across the nation.

    Sgt Scott Wedding of Daviess County sheriff’s department, however, said deputies were called to the mosque on Friday afternoon to investigate markings that turned out to have been made with smeared ketchup.

    He said officials were not treating the vandalism as a possible hate crime because those who perpetrated it left no words or symbols to indicate hate as a motivation.
