Six videos on Shiia and Iranian escalated reaction to Saudi execution of Shiia cleric

As the Saudi execution and Shiia reaction promise to spiral into a serious geopolitical event, this post is all videos on that issue. 1. Iraq: Shiias march through Baghdad to protest the Saudi execution of a Shiia cleric

2. UK: Hundreds decry govt. support of Saudi Arabia after Sheikh Nimr’s execution

(It is marginally interesting that the Shiia muslims conflate the KSA with the Islamic State as both jurisdictions are Sunni muslim in extremis. Of course it is the great fantasy of the IS to obliterate the KSA as they view the Saudis as corrupt and even marginally apostates. At least in terms of the leadership and government)

  1. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told news conference Iran’s diplomatic mission and related entities in Saudi Arabia given 48 hours to leave

Saudi Arabia severs diplomatic relations with Iran

Foreign ministry’s decision follows storming of the kingdom’s embassy in Tehran during protests on Saturday

Saudi Arabia has announced that it is severing diplomatic ties with Iran following Saturday’s attack of its embassy in Tehran during protests.

Adel al-Jubeir, Saudi foreign minister, made the announcement on Sunday as the foreign ministry announced that it would ask the Iranian diplomatic mission to leave the kingdom within 48 hours.

The Saudi foreign ministry has also announced that the staff of its diplomatic mission have been evacuated, and are now on their way back to Saudi.

At the press conference, al-Jubeir also said that during the violent protest in Tehran on Saturday, Saudi’s diplomatic representative asked for help from the Iranian Foreign ministry, but their requests were disregarded three times.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Joseph Kechichian, a Middle East analyst, said Saudi’s decision was “quite a surprise”.

“This is an escalation that will create havoc in the region,” he said.

  2. T U R K E Y : Scuffles erupt at Istanbul protest against Sheikh Nimr’s execution

Scuffles erupted as hundreds of activists rallied in Istanbul on Sunday to decry the execution of the Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr by the Saudi Arabian authorities.

The activists carried placards with pictures of the cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr while chanting various slogans. The rally ended up in front of the Saudi Arabian consulate which was guarded by a large police force.

Sheikh Nimr, a leading Shia cleric, was amongst 47 people executed on Saturday at the hands of the Saudi government after being convicted for “terrorism” offenses. He was a vocal critic of Saudi Arabia, and was one of seven people accused of orchestrating anti-government protests that erupted in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province in 2011. The 47 executed people included a Chadian national and an Egyptian with the remainder being Saudis. Saudi Arabia executed over 150 people in total during the year of 2015.

    • Well, considering the Saudis have a guy sitting in prison facing ten years and a thousand lashes for making some comments on his blog, I can’t see anybody being surprised at an actual critic of the Kingdom being executed for any flimsy excuse. These guys don’t do fairness… It would be exactly the same thing if it happened the other way around with a Saudi citizen being critical of the Islamic Republic. The Sunnis and the Shia hate each other so much, but to the rest of the world they look and act pretty much the same. What they hate about each other is so abundantly present in themselves.

    • Calgarians to protest execution of Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr

Hussaini Association of Calgary plans city hall protest, invites people of ‘all faiths and no faith’

As protests erupt around the world and tensions rise between Iran and Saudi Arabia, Calgarian Riyaz Khawaja said he was saddened by news of the execution of Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

Khawaja is the spokesperson for the Hussaini Association of Calgary, a Shia Muslim organization which is planning a protest on the steps of City Hall on Wednesday in response to the killing of al-Nimr. Al-Nimr was among the 47 victims executed by the Saudi state on Jan. 2.

“He was vocal about democracy and rights for the people, for which he got arrested, he got tortured, he got shot in 2012. Then he got a death sentence from the Saudi regime,” said Khawaja.

He wants to see action taken by the federal government on the human rights record of Saudi Arabia.

“We would request our Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the government to seriously take steps to stop the Saudi regime from doing such executions in future and stop promoting terrorism around the globe,” he said, after accusing the kingdom of supporting groups like ISIS.

People of ‘all faiths and no faith’ invited

The Hussaini Association will be handing out flyers at C-Train stations in the hopes of attracting a large crowd on Wednesday, including people “of all faiths and no faith.”

“International media, unfortunately, is framing this issue as a sectarian conflict between Shia Iran and Sunni Saudis, but I would like to clearly say that it is not sectarian at all,” said Khawaja.

The protest will take place at 6 p.m.
