  1. India man lynched over beef rumours (BBC, Sep 30, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-34398433

“A 50-year-old man in northern India has been killed in a mob lynching allegedly over rumours that his family had been storing and consuming beef at home.

Mohammad Akhlaq was kicked and beaten with stones by a group of men in Dadri in Uttar Pradesh state on Monday night.

Mr Akhlaq’s 22-year-old son was also seriously injured in the attack, and has been admitted to a hospital.

Six people have been arrested in connection with the incident. Police are probing who spread the rumour.

Slaughter of cows is a sensitive issue in India as the animal is considered sacred by Hindus, who comprise 80% of the country’s 1.2bn people.

Uttar Pradesh is among a number of Indian states who have tightened laws banning cow slaughter and the sale and consumption of beef.

The beef ban has also provoked outrage with many questioning how the government decides what is on their plate.

Mr Akhlaq’s family said the family had stored mutton, and not beef in their fridge. The police have taken the meat and sent it for testing, reports said.

“Some locals spread rumours that Akhlaq had cow meat at his home and engaged in cow slaughter. Following the rumours, they attacked his home,” senior local official NP Singh told The Indian Express newspaper.

Senior police official Kiran S told the AFP news agency that the “announcement about the family consuming beef was made at a [local] temple”.

The incident happened in a village, barely 50km (31 miles) away from the Indian capital, Delhi, where Mr Akhlaq, a farm worker, lived with his family…”

  2. Calais migrant crisis: Man killed on Eurotunnel tracks (BBC, Sep 30, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-34399729

“A migrant has been killed on the Eurotunnel tracks trying to make it to the UK.
The man is the 13th migrant to die trying to get to Britain since late June, and the
    fourth in 10 days.

The man’s nationality is not confirmed, although the BBC has been told by people in the migrant camps in Calais he was Eritrean.

A spokesman for Eurotunnel said a man was found unconscious beside the tracks at 01:00 BST on the French side.

A train driver was receiving “psychological support”, he added…”

“Kurdish forces attacked the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in northern Iraq on Sept.30 in the latest of several offensives aimed at driving the militants away from the oil-rich city of Kirkuk.

The assault began in the early morning to capture the al-Gurra heights to the west of Kirkuk in the direction of the ISIL bastion of Hawijah, Kurdish military sources said…”

  4. US Airstrikes Back Afghan Push to Retake City From Taliban (abcnews, Sep 30, 2015)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/us-airstrikes-back-afghan-push-retake-city-taliban-34141805

“U.S. airstrikes hit Taliban positions overnight around a key northern city seized by insurgents this week as Afghan troops massed on the ground Wednesday ahead of what is likely to be a protracted battle to retake Kunduz.

The Taliban were also gearing for the long fight and their fighters were seen planting bombs and mining roads in and out of the city on Wednesday to slow down Afghan forces.

Also overnight, there was fierce fighting for control of Kunduz’s airport, a few kilometers (miles) outside the city, before the Taliban retreated under fire, several residents said. The airport remained in Afghan government hands.

U.S. Army spokesman, Col. Brian Tribus, said there were two new airstrikes and that U.S. and NATO coalition advisers, including special forces were at the scene “in the Kunduz area, advising Afghan security forces.”

The Taliban captured Kunduz, a city of 300,000 people, on Monday. It was the first major urban area they seized since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion ousted their extremist regime….”

“Heavy fighting is continuing in the northern Afghan city of Kunduz, a day after government forces launched an attack to reclaim it from the Taliban.

Two US air strikes on Tuesday halted an attempt by insurgents to seize the airport, the army’s stronghold. The Taliban deny the strikes killed their leader in the province and his deputy.

An unspecified number of Nato special forces have now reached the city…”

        http://tribune.com.pk/story/964932/lawmakers-demand-president-resigns-as-afghan-battle-rages/

“KABUL: Afghan lawmakers called on President Ashraf Ghani to resign on Wednesday over his government’s “shameful” handling of the battle for Kunduz, the northern city which has fallen to Taliban insurgents in their biggest victory so far in 14 years of war.

The militants seized control of Kunduz after an audacious assault on the city on Monday, and the promised counter-offensive from Afghan forces has yet to materialize.

Instead, thousands of exhausted Afghan police and soldiers are holed up at the city’s airport waiting for reinforcements from other parts of the country.

“It is shameful how they (the government) have dealt with the situation in Kunduz,” said Iqbal Safi, a member of parliament from Kapisa province, during a televised session of parliament.

“Ghani and Abdullah must step down,” he added, referring to Ghani’s Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah…”

“Taliban fighters have seized a military hilltop site in Kunduz, tightening their grip on the northern Afghan city.

The capture of the Bala Hisar fortress came despite efforts by government reinforcements, backed by Nato airstrikes and special forces, to retake the city.

It leaves the airport as the army’s last stronghold…”

  6. Weapons bound for Yemen seized on Iran boat: coalition (reuters, Sep 30, 2015)
    http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/09/30/us-yemen-security-idUSKCN0RU0R220150930

“Arab coalition forces waging a military campaign against Houthi fighters in Yemen seized an Iranian boat loaded with weapons in the Arabian Sea on its way to deliver supplies to the group, the Saudi-led alliance said on Wednesday.

The announcement was made a day after tribal fighters backed by the coalition won control of a strategic dam in central Yemen from Houthi forces following weeks of fighting in the area east of the capital Sanaa.

The coalition, which also includes Bahrain, Qatar, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, has been battling the Iranian-backed Houthis for more than six months, trying to shore up President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi’s government and contain what the Gulf Arab states see growing Tehran’s influence in their backyard.

As part of the campaign, Saudi-led naval forces have imposed a near-blockade to prevent weapons supplies from reaching the Houthis, resulting in long delays and mandatory searches for shippers in the region.

A coalition statement said 14 Iranian sailors were detained on the boat, which was carrying 18 anti-armoured Concourse shells, 54 anti-tank shells, shell-battery kits, firing guidance systems, launchers and binoculars’ batteries…”

  7. France investigates Syria’s Assad for crimes against humanity (reuters, Sep 30, 2015)
    http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/09/30/us-france-syria-assad-idUSKCN0RU11320150930

“France is investigating Bashar al-Assad over alleged crimes against humanity, the Paris prosecutor’s office said on Wednesday, launching a case that highlights divisions among major powers over relations with the Syrian leader.

The investigation, which is also examining claims of torture and kidnapping by Assad’s forces, was opened “on the basis of indications received from the foreign ministry” on Sept. 10, an official at the prosecutor’s office said.

An estimated 250,000 people have been killed in Syria’s four-year civil war between Assad’s troops, rebel groups and Islamic State militants, and a further 11 million displaced.

The ministry’s dossier drew on some 55,000 photographic images smuggled out of the country by a former Syrian army officer, showing 11,000 alleged victims of forces loyal to Assad, according to various media reports.

The competence of French courts to try those held responsible may hinge on the identification of French nationals among the victims. Even in that event, the prospect of a trial in France would appear remote.

In the face of sustained Russian support for the Syrian president, France recently joined other western powers in softening earlier demands that Assad leave office as a precondition for peace talks…”

  8. Russia parliament approves military move in Syria (BBC, Sep 30, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-34400193

“Russia’s upper house of parliament has voted to allow the military to be deployed in Syria, paving the way for air strikes on the militant Islamic State (IS) group.

The vote followed a request from Syria for military aid, senior Kremlin official Sergey Ivanov said.

Mr Ivanov ruled out the use of ground troops and said the step involved only the use of the air force.
President Vladimir Putin called this week for a broad anti-terror coalition.

He told the UN it should be similar to the alliance that opposed Hitler in World War Two.

A US-led coalition has been carrying out air strikes against IS in Syria and Iraq for more than a year.

But Mr Ivanov, the president’s chief-of-staff, said US and French airstrikes in Syria circumvented international law, since they had not been authorised by a UN resolution or by the Syrian government.

President Bashar al-Assad, he said, had officially requested military assistance from Moscow…”

  9. U.S. stops sending new Syria recruits to troubled rebel training program (reuters, Sep 30, 2015)
    http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/09/30/us-mideast-crisis-usa-rebels-idUSKCN0RT2U820150930

“The United States has stopped pulling new recruits from the battlefield in Syria for training outside the country as the U.S. military program to forge a force of moderate rebels undergoes review, a Pentagon spokesman said on Tuesday.

The program has been troubled from its inception, with some of the first class of less than 60 fighters coming under attack from al Qaeda’s Syria wing, Nusra Front, in their battlefield debut. Some were killed or captured, and the whereabouts of 18 fighters in the first class are unknown, a U.S. military spokesman said this month.

Some of the U.S.-trained rebels handed over some of their equipment to Nusra last week in return for safe passage, in violation of program guidelines.

Despite the problems, the Pentagon said the program was still active, with recruiting and training ongoing.

“As we review the program, we have paused the actual movement of new recruits from Syria,” said Peter Cook, the Pentagon spokesman. “We also continue to provide support for current forces on the ground and to train the cohorts currently in the program.””

  14. Arabs Spurn Military Push by Moscow Inside Syria
Saudis’ strong stance highlights Obama’s dilemma, with some allies supporting Russian role and others opposing one

While Russia’s stated goal in moving into Syria is to fight the Islamic State, NATO’s top commander believes Russia’s new presence includes the first pieces of an intricate layer of defensive systems deployed to hinder U.S. and coalition operations in the region. “As we see the very capable air defense [systems] beginning to show up in Syria, we’re a little worried about another A2/AD bubble being created in the eastern Mediterranean,” said Gen. Philip M. Breedlove on Monday. A2/AD stands for anti-access/area denial.
Breedlove suggested that Russia’s presence in Syria had little to do with fighting the Islamic State and a lot to do with propping up Syrian President Assad. “These very sophisticated air defense capabilities are not about [the Islamic State], they’re about something else,” said Breedlove.

  15. Saudi royal calls for regime change in Riyadh

A senior Saudi prince has launched an unprecedented call for change in the country’s leadership. One of the grandsons of the state’s founder, Abdulaziz Ibn Saud, has told the Guardian that there is disquiet among the royal family at the leadership of King Salman, who acceded to the throne in January. “The king is not in a stable condition and in reality the son of the king [Mohammed bin Salman] is ruling the kingdom,” said the prince, who wrote two letters earlier this month calling for the king to be removed. “The public are also pushing this very hard, all kinds of people, tribal leaders,” the prince added.

Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the deputy crown prince, is a new arrival to the Saudi senior leadership team. Still very young by Saudi standards – officially 35 but rumored to be much younger – he is minister of defense, responsible for Saudi Arabia’s intervention in Yemen, where rebel Houthis have come under attack from Saudi aircraft and ground forces.

  16. Western racism gives the Arab Gulf states a free pass

While hundreds of millions of refugees all over the world have been successfully resettled and integrated into their new worlds, the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of these Palestinian refugees have been cynically kept hostages to hate and to the blind rejection of the reality their own leaders imposed. These same wealthy Arab states also renege on their pledges to support the Palestinian Authority operating budget, shifting yet another Arab obligation onto the shoulders of Europe and the U.S.

Why do world leaders not demand that these rich Arab states take care of their own brother Arabs and fellow Muslims? . . . Why are these Arab refugees, running from Arab hostility and Arab cruelty, a European responsibility?

It seems to me that this is a manifestation of raw racism. . . . It’s as if the world does not hold Arabs to accepted norms of human compassion, empathy, and moral obligation. It’s as if the world does not expect Muslim Arabs to care about their own brothers and sisters. No one dares mention their obligations and their naked repudiation of responsibility. Is the underlying premise that they are somehow different or inferior, or that their culture and code of conduct cannot be judged by Western standards? Do we implicitly discredit their culture and unthinkingly excuse them from humanitarian and international responsibility?

  17. Iranian General Blames Israel for Mecca Disasters

The deputy chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces blamed Israel for the disasters in Mecca this month, in which more than 100 people died when a construction crane collapsed and more than 700 died in a stampede.

Brig. Gen. Massoud Jazzayeri said that tragedies, in which more than 150 Iranians pilgrims died, may have been caused by Israel, in cooperation with Saudi Arabia.

“Given the usurper Zionist regime’s infiltration and influence on the al-Saud, there is a growing possibility that the crane crash incident at the Grand Mosque (in the holy city of Mecca) and the death of thousands of people in Mina were the result of deliberate crime,” Jazzayeri told the semi-official Fars News Agency. He went on to say that “fact-finding groups from all Muslim states have the responsibility to decrypt this al-Saud crime.”

Jazzayeri is no stranger to conspiracy theories. He has previously said that the Islamic State was formed as part of an American plot to “defame Islam” and “create a new Middle East…in line with the illegitimate interests of the Zionist regime.” After the Klos-C, an ship filled with Iranian rockets and arms bound for Gaza, was intercepted by the Israeli Navy last year, Jazzayeri denied Iranian involvement, claiming that “the Americans and the Zionists probably ordered (from) Hollywood the production of a movie with the scenario of a cargo ship carrying Iranian weapons to Gaza in Palestine.”

“The only right way to fight against international terrorism in Syria and in the neighbouring states, where groups consisting exactly of international terrorists commit outrages, is to act preventively, to fight and annihilate militants on the territories that they have already occupied, not to wait when they come to our homes. It is well known, that among members of the so-called terrorist organisation, Islamic State, and I want to stress once again that it has nothing to do with real Islam, thousands of people from European countries, Russia and post-Soviet countries are now involved. There is no need to be an expert in these questions in order to understand that if they succeed in Syria they will inevitably return to their homelands and Russia as well. It is not a secret that so-called Islamic State has long ago declared our country as enemy.”

  25. Ahmed Mohamed’s Qatari Vacation with the Muslim Brotherhood

Teenage clockmaker invited to Qatar by an organization linked to the terror group.

The story of Ahmed Mohamed, the Dallas schoolboy made famous by the reaction to his arrest for bringing a homemade clock that resembled a suitcase bomb to school, has taken another curious turn. According to the Dallas Morning News, Ahmed and his family have accepted an invitation extended by the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development to visit Qatar. Their sister institution, the Qatar Foundation International (QFI) was founded by Sheikh bin Al Thani, who also created Al Jazeera. QFI has links to the Muslim Brotherhood (MB).

The trip is another leg on what is best described as a celebrity-like tour. On Monday, Ahmed’s newfound status took him to New York’s City Hall, where he received a proclamation from Public Advocate Letitia James. James referred to Ahmed as a role model and allowed him to sit in her council chamber chair. Ahmed was also given a tour of City Hall by Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, and was presented with framed commendation by city Comptroller Scott Stringer. “All students should engage w/ science and technology – Ahmed Mohamed is a role model for all NYers,” Stringer tweeted after the meeting. […]

Suspicious activity is a term that might be aptly applied to the Muslim Brotherhood-linked QFI. In 2012 QFI launched the Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics. The Center’s director is Professor Tariq Ramadan, who is the grandson of the Muslim Brotherhood’s founder, Hassan al Banna. Ramadan was banned from coming to the United States until 2010 when the Obama administration granted him a visa to lecture at a school in New York. QFI has also instituted Sheikh Yusuf Al Qaradawi Scholarships, named after the notorious Egyptian cleric who twice turned down offers to be the MB’s highest-ranking official. Al Qaradawi has been documented endorsing the “abduction and killing of Americans in Iraq,” and the desire to end his life as a martyr by shooting “Allah’s enemies, the Jews.”

“Qaradawi has personally attended scores of foundation events, including conferences at which he served as a keynote speaker,” World Net Daily reveals.

    http://edition.cnn.com/2015/09/30/asia/afghanistan-kunduz-taliban-attack/index.html

“Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN)Afghan forces have retaken the major city of Kunduz from Taliban militants, Sediq Sediqqi, a spokesman for the Ministry of Interior Affairs, said early Thursday.
