The head of the committee which oversees the hajj pilgrimage has sparked outrage by blaming pilgrims of ‘African nationalities’ for the stampede which killed more than 700 people.
In what was the worst disaster in a quarter-century to strike the annual event, 769 people died two days ago when the stampede broke out in Mina, about three miles from Mecca, during the symbolic stoning of the devil ritual.
The inflammatory comments come as authorities were heavily criticised for a perceived lapse in safety measures at what is one of the world’s largest pilgrimages.
At Ground Zero yesterday, Pope Francis bemoaned “the powerlessness we feel when we see injustice, the inability to solve our differences, to dialogue.” But when it comes to Islamic supremacists and jihadists, they have no interest in genuine dialogue. They have no interest in reaching some negotiated compromise. As far as they’re concerned, Allah has commanded them to convert, subjugate or kill the “People of the Book” (primarily Jews and Christians), and there is no negotiating or “dialogue” about the command of Allah. This intransigence is something the Pope appears not to have considered.

I would just like to take this opportunity to say a few words about Ahmed, the muslim child who repackaged a 1980s alarm clock for school, although it wasn’t actually part of any homework assignment or anything.
I would like to say that I am shocked, horrified and disgusted at the Nobel Prize committee in Norway for not forming a special session to award young Ahmed the Nobel Peace Prize. The fact is that it is without question that young Ahmed is at least as deserving of the honour as President Obama and certainly more deserving than Yasser Arafat who won it in 1994 for not killing quite as many Jews as he was maybe capable of at the time with a collection of clocks he had hidden in mosques around Gaza at the time.
