  1. What is this nut job talking about… Btw; Europe has all sorts of (legally valid and binding) rules that are de facto not being enforced as of now.

“GENEVA, Sept 13 (Reuters) – The European Union must avoid fragmenting into a patchwork of countries with different border rules, which would plunge thousands of refugees into “legal limbo”, the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR said in a statement on Sunday.

Decisions by a meeting of EU ministers of the interior on Monday would be “even more critical”, UNHCR said. Earlier on Sunday Germany re-imposed border controls after acknowledging it could scarcely cope with thousands of asylum seekers arriving every day. 2. Slovakia to oppose quotas at EU meeting: PM (eubusiness, Sep 13, 2015)

“Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico said his government will oppose EU plans for compulsory migrant quotas at an emergency meeting in Brussels on Monday.

“If quotas are approved, we will take a substantial and clear position. We will do everything we can to convince Europe that quotas are nonsense,” he said in a television broadcast on Sunday.

He said Interior Minister Robert Kalinak would aim to block the European Commission’s plan involving a quota system to distribute 160,000 refugees across the 28-member EU.

Fico said that imposing quotas — a move also opposed by the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland — “would be a violation of the basic decision-making rules of the European Union”.”

  3. France urges EU members to ‘scrupulously’ respect Schengen rules (eubusiness, Sep 13, 2015)

“France on Sunday called for the “scrupulous respect by all European Union countries” of rules setting out the bloc’s borderless Schengen zone as Germany reinstated border checks in the face of a record influx of refugees.

“These rules, in particular, require the registration of migrants in the country where they crossed the (EU’s) external borders,” French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said in a statement after speaking with his German counterpart.

Because some countries have not kept to these rules “Germany has decided to temporarily establish border controls”, he added.

French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel also discussed the latest developments in the migrant crisis in a phone call late Sunday.

The two leaders “share the same evaluation of the current situation of the refugees” and agreed that both countries would work together to prepare for Monday’s EU interior and justice ministers’ meeting on the issue, a spokeswoman for the German government said in a statement…”

The Obama administration has refused to issue weapons to the Ukrainian military, but has agreed to provide training via the U.S. Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade.

Previously, the U.S. Army has focused on training Ukraine’s National Guard, a focus which will now broaden in scope to cover the entirety of the military, The Hill reports. The Senate Armed Services Committee’s top Democrat, Sen. Jack Reed, gave the announcement Wednesday, effectively ending conflicting information coming from the Army and State Department.

Officials: US to increase number of refugees by 5K next year to help ease migrant crisis

http://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2015/09/09/kerry-to-meet-with-lawmakers-about-migrant-crisis-abroadWASHINGTON (AP) — The United States is prepared to increase the number of refugees it resettles by at least 5,000 next year as European countries struggle to accommodate tens of thousands of refugees from the Middle East and Africa.

Two officials and a congressional aide said that Secretary of State John Kerry told members of Congress in a private meeting Wednesday that the United States will boost its worldwide quota for resettling refugees from 70,000 to 75,000 next year, and that number could rise. A fraction of those would be from Syria.

Kerry said after the meeting with members of the Senate Judiciary Committee that the U.S. would increase the number of refugees it is willing to take in, but he did not give a specific number.
