  1. Asia migrant crisis: New mass graves on Malaysia-Thai border (BBC, Aug 23, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-34033474

“New mass graves with 24 bodies thought to be those of migrants have been found in Malaysia, police say. The graves were found in the state of Perlis near the Thai border not far from 139 grave sites unearthed in May, Perlis police chief Shafie Ismail said. Authorities believe they may belong to migrants held for ransom in jungle camps by gangs of human traffickers. Migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar have left for Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia recently. Most of the more than 100 bodies found in May belonged to Rohingya Muslims fleeing persecution in Myanmar. Malaysian police said the latest bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations.

Survivors of the detention camps have told the BBC that they were tortured and raped when they couldn’t pay the traffickers, and said some died from the abuse. The news is likely to trigger more debate on whether Malaysian officials are doing enough to stop human trafficking. Recently, the US removed Malaysia from its list of human trafficking’s worst offenders. But, human rights groups accused American officials of doing this in order to speed up a trade pact with the Asia Pacific region, something the US has denied….”

    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/rockets-kill-pakistani-soldiers-afghan-border-33259465

“The Pakistani army says rockets fired by militants from across the Afghan border have hit a military post, killing four soldiers and wounding four others.

An army statement says troops at the post in Akhandwala Pass in the Khyber tribal region killed the militants behind the attack Sunday. The military did not say which militant group launched the attack.

The Pakistani army is currently engaged in a massive operation to drive out militants in Khyber and other tribal regions.

Local and foreign militants have used safe havens in tribal regions for years to carry out attacks on both sides of the border, frequently attacking army positions in the mountainous terrain.”

Anyone want to bet on the political affiliation of this idiot? After all stealing from big corporations is stealing from all of the other customers, the increase in insurance has to be passed on to the other customers. Remember the corporations have no source of income besides sales, and that when the profit margin drops enough the companys go our of business.

FYI the majority stockholders in most corporations are retirement funds for the workers at other companies. steal from a major box store and you steal from many people who are living paycheck to paycheck.

  6. One-day record for migrant rescues in sea near Libya: 4,400

ROME (AP) — Italy’s coast guard says it coordinated the rescue of some 4,400 migrants in a single day, a record-setting number, as smugglers took advantage of ideal sea conditions off Libya to launch a fleet of overcrowded, unseaworthy boats.

The coast guard on Sunday said 22 rescue operations were carried out a day earlier for motorized rubber dinghies and fishing boats, all crammed with migrants desperate to reach Europe’s southern shores.

Italian coast guard, navy and border police boats pitched in, as did Norwegian and Irish naval vessels deployed in a European patrol-and-rescue force. Boats in distress use satellite phones to call coast guard rescuers or are spotted by patrolling Italian military aircraft.

So far this year, some 110,000 migrants have been rescued off Libya and brought to southern Italian ports.

A total of 22 operations were carried out to transfer the migrants aboard Coast Guard vessels for onward transportation to ports in Italy.

  9. Al jazeera – Berlin says 100 Germans killed fighting alongside ISIL

Interior minister says about 700 citizens have travelled to Syria and Iraq since ISIL declared ‘caliphate’ in 2014

About 100 Germans have died fighting within the ranks of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) since 2012, according to the country’s interior minister.

In comments published Sunday, Thomas de Maziere said that about 700 had travelled to Syria and Iraq to fight alongside ISIL since the group declared a ‘caliphate’ last year.

About a third of those who travelled to the region to fight have since returned, de Maziere told Germany’s Bild am Sonntag newspaper.

De Maziere said Germany has blocked travel to the region in an effort to control the problem.

There are currently almost 600 investigations into 800 individuals on allegations of illegally travelling to the region to fight, he told the newspaper.

The minister also pointed to recent changes in German law that give authorities the right to confiscate identity papers from anyone seeking to travel to a Middle Eastern war zones.

The DPA news agency said that the law bans a person from leaving Germany for three years and makes it easier to press charges against anyone who attempts to travel to the region to participate in “terrorism activities”.

Other changes to German law have made it easier for authorities to crack down on the financing of terrorism.

Earlier this month, Hans-Georg Maassen, the head of Germany’s domestic intelligence, said that fewer Germans went to Syria and Iraq to fight with ISIL in the past few months than during last year’s surge following the group’s declaration of a ‘caliphate’.

“We expect that the numbers will continue to increase, probably not as dramatically as we experienced last year, but ISIL, Syria and Iraq and this battlefield are still attractive for young people from Germany who want to become jihadists,” Maassen told the Reuters news agency.

Early in August, ISIL released a video of some of its fighters speaking in German calling on Muslims in Europe to join the ranks of the group.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said last month that more than 37,000 foreign fighters have died during the ongoing conflict in Syria.

  11. France train gunman Ayoub El-Khazzani ‘dumbfounded’ at terror allegations and claims he found AK-47 ‘by chance’ in a park

Ayoub El-Khazzani, the man suspected of attempting a massacre on a French train, is “dumbfounded” that he is being accused of terrorism and claims he found the AK-47 assault rifle “by chance”, according to his former lawyer.

Sophie David, a lawyer who was assigned to El-Khazzani when he was detained in Arras but is no longer representing him, said he denies firing a single shot.

Speaking to BFM-TV, David said: “He is dumbfounded that his act is being linked to terrorism,” adding that El-Khazzani describes himself as a homeless man.

“He says that by chance he found a suitcase with a weapon, with a telephone, hidden away,” she said.

“He said he found it in the park which is just next to the Midi Station in Brussels, where he often sleeps with other homeless people.”

Explaining what El-Khazzani claims he planned to do with the rifle, David said: “He planned to hold up the train, then shoot out a window and jump out to escape.”

“When I told him about the media attention he didn’t understand,” she added.

The 26-year-old gunman is belived to have links to Isis and radical Islam, and was on the Schengen register, a watch-list of “persons of interest” that is shared by 27 European countries.

Officials believe that El-Khazzani planned to kill people on the train. He was discovered with the gun when another passenger encountered him while trying to use the toilet.

The passenger tried to subdue him, and shots started flying, claims Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve.

The gunman was subdued when two American servicemen, US Airman Spencer Stone and National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos, their friend Anthony Sadler, and British businessman Chris Norman tackled and disarmed him.

Sadler described seeing a train employee running down the aisle, followed by a man with a rifle.

“As he was cocking it to shoot it, Alek just yells, ‘Spencer, go!’ And Spencer runs down the aisle,” Sadler said.

“Spencer makes first contact, he tackles the guy, Alek wrestles the gun away from him, and the gunman pulls out a box cutter and slices Spencer a few times. And the three of us beat him until he was unconscious.”

Norman said he was the last to jump into the fray, grabbing the gunman’s arm and tying it with his tie.

El-Khazzani denies firing a shot, but Skarlatos, who has served in Afghanistan, said then when he examined the rifle, he found that the gunman had tried to fire it but failed because it had a bad primer.

Stone was taken to hospital with a hand injury, and an unidentified dual French-American citizen was also hospitalised with a bullet wound.

The victim is in a “serious but stable” condition and their life is not in danger. Stone was released from hospital on the same day, and the three Americans apparently visited the US Ambassador’s residence in Paris.

The White House said that President Barack Obama called them on Saturday to commend and congratulate them.

    • CBC NEWS – France train attack: Gunman planned robbery, lawyer says

Officials say Ayoub El-Khazzani is a radical Islamist, his lawyer says he needed money for food

El-Khazzani’s lawyer said he told her that he wasn’t a terrorist.

“He is dumbfounded that his action is being characterized as terrorism,” said Sophie David, a lawyer in Arras, where the train was rerouted to arrest El-Khazzani — now being questioned outside Paris by anti-terrorism police.

He described himself as homeless and David said she had “no doubt” this was true, saying he was “very, very thin” as if suffering from malnutrition and “with a very wild look in his eyes.”

“He thought of a holdup to be able to feed himself, to have money,” she said on BFM-TV, then “shoot out a window and jump out to escape.”

She said her client told her he had found the valise full of weapons, including the box cutter and rounds of ammunition, in a Brussels public park near the train station.

Ayoub El-Khazzani’s father Mohamed weeps as he says ‘I have no idea what he was thinking’

The father of the gunman who attempted to commit a massacre aboard a high-speed international train service has spoken for the first time of his shock.

Mohamed El-Khazzani, speaking exclusively to The Telegraph, said his son was a “good boy” and expressed incredulity at his actions.

“I have no idea what he was thinking and I have not spoken to him for over a year,” said Mr El-Khazzani.

“He was a good boy, very hardworking.”

Ayoub was arrested twice in the Spanish capital for selling hashish in 2009.

“But he was only carrying a little bit; he was just a boy then,” his father said.

“He and his brother were very devout; they dressed like Afghans and all that, but I can’t believe this,” said one young man of Moroccan origin. “He would sit with us while we smoked joints, you know? He didn’t smoke, but he didn’t mind that we did.”

  12. video – Sweden 2 Muslim women attack a bus driver

Disturbing footage has surfaced of two Muslim women of Arab decent attacking an unsuspecting bus driver while horrified passengers watched in terror.

Online Arabic news site Azamil reports that the incident took place in Sweden and that a quarrel erupted into a terrifying assault when a Muslim woman hit a bus driver after he refused to open the door. The driver allegedly would not allow the aggressive women to leave the bus, and the language barrier kept them from understanding each other’s demands.

The Muslim women, who are reportedly from Iraq, resorted to violence and screaming when they found that the driver could not understand their demands.

Amazil blames the lack of “necessary culture to cope with situations of this kind,” but the truth is that this woman willingly came to a Western country and refused to assimilate or even learn the language and culture of her accommodating host. This refusal is not only rampant among Muslim migrants, it is a show of dominance and hatred for non-Muslim culture and law.

The Arabic site explains that this violent, retaliatory behavior is common in Arab countries. However, this backwards culture should never be excused simply because this is how Arab Muslims are used to behaving.

  14. Boko Haram crisis: Nigerian army chief ambushed (BBC, Aug 23, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-34034251

“Suspected Boko Haram militants ambushed a convoy carrying the new head of the Nigerian army, the military says. The ambush, which took place on Saturday in north-eastern Borno state, led to a clash in which one soldier and at least five militants were killed. Army chief Gen Tukur Buratai took up his post in July after the president sacked the heads of the military for failing to end Boko Haram’s insurgency.

Boko Haram began fighting for an Islamic state in the north in 2009. At least 17,000 people have been killed since then, according to Amnesty International.

Gen Buratai was visiting troops in Borno state when his convoy was ambushed about 45km (28 miles) east of the state capital, Maiduguri, an army spokesman said.

Nigeria’s Premium Times reported that an advance section of the convoy had been targeted, and that Gen Buratai had later ordered the convoy to stop so that suspects could be arrested. Boko Haram has lost territory in recent months to a multinational force that includes troops from Nigeria’s neighbours. But the militant group has stepped up its campaign since President Muhammadu Buhari took office in May….”

  15. Yemen Officials Say Coalition Bombs Rebels at Bab El-Mandeb (abcnews, Aug 23, 2015)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/yemen-officials-coalition-bombs-rebels-bab-el-mandeb-33262516

“The Saudi-led coalition targeting Shiite rebels in Yemen bombed insurgent positions near the Bab el-Mandeb strait on Sunday to weaken them in preparation for a ground offensive there, Yemeni security officials close to pro-government forces said.

The airstrikes were confirmed by security officials close to the rebels, known as Houthis, who said that 13 of their fighters were killed in the airstrikes. The airstrikes took place in areas Houthis control around the strategic Red Sea strait, including the port town of Mocha, which is connected by road to Taiz, Yemen’s third-largest city.

A similar tactic of airstrikes preceding a ground offensive was used in other areas taken over by pro-government forces, including in the southern port city of Aden, which the Houthis lost to pro-government troops last month

Meanwhile, the Saudi military said a high-ranking general was killed along the kingdom’s border with Yemen in the kingdom’s southern region of Jizan. The Saudi Press Agency carried the statement saying Maj. Gen. Abdulrahman al-Shahrani, commander of the 18th brigade, died Sunday after coming under hostile fire. He is the highest ranking Saudi officer to die since Saudi Arabia began its air offensive in Yemen in late March.

Several dozen Saudi soldiers have been killed in border attacks since the airstrikes began, mostly by missiles launched by the rebels and their allies. Two Saudi pilots were killed Friday when their helicopter was shot down in Jizan.

Also Sunday, Yemeni officials said pro-government forces took over the eastern part of the town of Mukayris in Bayda province in an operation supported by airstrikes from the Saudi-led coalition. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they weren’t authorized to brief journalists….”

  18. Britain’s embassy in Iran re-opens with ‘Death to England’ still graffitied above Queen’s portrait

Embassy has grand reopening four years after being wrecked by Iranian mob – but refurbishment still leaves anti-British graffiti intact

Britain’s vandalised embassy in Iran reopened on Sunday – with graffiti stiill daubed above a portrait of the Queen saying “Death to England”.

The graffiti, one of numerous slogans sprayed across the embassy in Tehran when it was ransacked by a mob four years ago, had not been removed for the grand-reopening of the embassy, despite the attendance of VIPs including the Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond.

Officials claimed that removing the graffiti without damaging the building’s elegant Victorian walls required specialists who had not yet been brought in. But there was surprise that the offending graffiti, which was written in Persian, had not been covered up in anyway prior to Mr Hammond’s visit. There were other signs of damage as well, including mirrors that were still broken.
