  1. US asks Australia to expand air cover into Syria (BBC, Aug 21, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-34013351

“The US has formally asked Australia to expand its role fighting against Islamic State (IS) to include Syria, local media reported.

The request was reportedly sent to the Australian embassy in Washington on Thursday. The government would say only that the request would be “properly considered”. The move would allow the Australian air force, already involved in air strikes over Iraq, to pursue IS targets in Syria as well.

Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey, who sits on Australia’s national security committee, said IS did not recognise borders and Australia had an obligation to “do what we can” to stop them.

The Australian newspaper reported that the US request included enhanced intelligence gathering, support for US and coalition fighter planes in Syrian air space and the potential for Australian airstrikes….”

  2. Hamas members seized from bus near Egypt-Gaza border (BBC, Aug 21, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-34012704

“Masked gunmen have seized four members of the Palestinian Islamic group Hamas from a bus travelling to Cairo from the Gaza Strip, officials have said. The bus carrying 50 passengers was ambushed close to the Rafah border crossing with Gaza on Wednesday night. Hamas has called on Egypt to secure the members’ release. Relations between the militant group and Egypt have been strained since Islamist President Mohammed Morsi was ousted from power two years ago. Hamas is an offshoot of Mr Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood – which is now banned in Egypt.

An Egyptian security official said four unknown men fired at the bus forcing it to stop. The driver was assaulted and the Hamas members captured after their identity documents were checked. The bus was being escorted by Egyptian soldiers at the time, according to Hamas. “The graveness of such an incident was that it was the first of its kind and it breaks all diplomatic and security norms,” the group said in a statement.

The road from the Rafah border crossing runs through northern Sinai. The most active militant group in the area is an affiliate of the so-called Islamic State. Egypt has previously accused Hamas of supporting militants in the Sinai desert, who seek to topple the Cairo government. Hamas has denied that allegation. Israel, the US and several other nations have designated the group as a terrorist organisation over its long record of attacks on Israel and its refusal to renounce violence.”

  3. Macedonian Troops Fire Stun Grenades at Migrants on Border (abcnews, Aug 21, 2015)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/macedonian-troops-fire-stun-grenades-migrants-border-33221751

“Macedonian special police forces fired stun grenades Friday to disperse thousands of migrants stuck on a no-man’s land with Greece, a day after declaring a state of emergency on its border to deal with a massive influx of migrants heading north to the European Union.

A crowd of 3,000 migrants who spent night out in the open made several attempts Friday to charge Macedonian police after the border was shut to crossings the previous day. At least eight people were injured in the melee, according to Greek police.

One youngster was bleeding from what appeared to be shrapnel from the stun grenades that were fired directly into the crowd.

Police backed by armored vehicles also spread coils of razor wire over rail tracks used by migrants to cross on foot from Greece to Macedonia.

The migrants, many with babies and young children, spent the chilly and windy night in a dust field without food and with little water. Some ate corn they picked from nearby fields….”

  7. BREITBART – Canada’s Liberal Leader Backs Muslim Face Coverings, Opposes Calling Honor Killings ‘Barbaric’

Justin Trudeau, leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, has a history of courting Muslim voters through flirtations with Islamic fundamentalism. This has included addressing a mosque with ties to Hamas and defending the niqab.

Trudeau has described himself as lucky to be the member of Parliament of a region he says is among those with the highest numbers of Muslims in Quebec. The son of late former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, his political ascendance has led to commentary about civic familial dynasties similar to those about Jeb Bush and Hillary Clinton. Canada will have its 42nd federal election on October 19, and the three major parties are currently in a statistical dead heat, according to recent polls.

Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party’s politicking have deployed a strategy of courting Muslims by promising to combat what left-wing media have described as “Islamophobia” from Stephen Harper and conservatives.[…]

  9. Bangkok bombing: Thai police name blast suspect as Mohamad Museyin

THAI Police have named a man in connection with the Bangkok bombing that killed 20 people.

Authorities have revealed they are searching for a Muslim man called Mohamad Museyin, The Times of London reported.

But the bespectacled man, who was seen leaving a back pack at the Erawan Shrine shortly before the explosion, remains on the run.

There are fears he may have fled overseas after being dropped off by a motorcycle taxi driver at Lumpini Park, in central Bangkok after the attack on Monday night.

Two other suspects who were identified on security footage and believed to be accomplices have been questioned and cleared by police.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear.

Police have said the bombing was not linked to any terrorism group, and no-one has so far claimed responsibility for the deadly blast that also injured 125 people.

The reward for information leading to an arrest has doubled to 2 million baht ($76,000), as police hope for more help from the public.
