  1. Suicide bombing at Afghan market kills at least 9 people (CNN, July 22, 2015)
    http://edition.cnn.com/2015/07/22/asia/afghanistan-violence/index.html

Children were among the dead, all of whom were civilians, said Sayed Masoud Yaqoobi, a local police spokesman. He warned the number of casualties could rise.

The blast hit the market in Almar, a district of Faryab province situated near the border with Turkmenistan, around 11:30 a.m. local time Wednesday, Yaqoobi said.

  2. INDIA – Curfew continues to remain in force over IS flag burning in Rajouri

Police and para military personnel were deployed in strength and outlets of all the lanes and bylanes sealed with barbed wire fence to prevent movement of people.

Curfew continued to remain in force in Rajouri town for the second day on Wednesday, following tension over the burning of an ISIS flag carrying a handwritten Kalima Tayyaba on it by some Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal activists.

As tempers were running high with members of Muslim community insisting on arrest of all those burning the Kalima Tayyaba on ISIS flag, the administration had suspended GPRS service in the district to prevent people from spreading rumours about the situation through social networking sites like whats app and twitter since last night. This has been done to check trouble from spreading to areas outside Rajouri town, sources added.

Meanwhile, police and para military personnel were deployed in strength and outlets of all the lanes and bylanes sealed with barbed wire fence to prevent movement of people. The curfew was being strictly enforced and cops were not allowing anybody to come out, said a local resident on phone.

The curfew was imposed in the town on Tuesday evening following clashes between members of Muslim community and local police over the burning of Kalima Tayyaba written by hand on an ISIS flag. While they demanded arrest of those responsible for burning it, VHP leaders expressed regrets over the incident saying that they had only burnt the ISIS flag.

Elders from both the communities had on Tuesday morning held a meeting and decided to defuse situation by taking out a joint peace march in the town. However, youth from Muslim community resisted and continued with their demonstrations making their leaders withdraw from the march.

Later, as police resorted to lathicharge to disperse demonstrators at Abdullah bridge, violence spread to other parts of the town with later grouping and re-grouping to pelt stones at lathi wielding cops, making the administration call army and impose curfew. Since then, there has been no untoward incident reported from any place so far.

  5. Spain arrests man accused of recruiting for Islamic State

Spanish police, with the help of Moroccan authorities, have arrested a man accused of distributing propaganda and recruiting for the Islamic State group, the Interior Ministry said on Wednesday.

The 29-old-man, a native of the Spanish North African enclave Melilla, was arrested as part of a police operation against networks dedicated to capturing and sending girls and young women to Syria and Iraq, the ministry said.

On July 7, Spanish police arrested a woman in the Canary Islands accused to radicalising and sending young women to Islamist militants in the Middle East.

Spain has arrested 49 people this year, including the man detained on Wednesday, over suspected Islamist militant activities.

    Corniche harassment: Accused behind bars

JEDDAH: An unspecified number of young men have been arrested for harassing two Saudi girls at Jeddah Corniche a day after Eid Al-Fitr, even as experts called for a tough law on Monday to prevent such incidents.

A video clip of the case went viral on the social media on Sunday, triggering outrage over the episode and demands by citizens to arrest the culprits.

Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal directed the agencies concerned to expedite the investigation and arrest those involved in the case.

A website quoting Brig. Masood Al-Adwani, director of Jeddah police, said a team was formed to analyze the video and identify the culprits.

“The suspects were questioned before being arrested, and were handed over to the authorities concerned for further investigation and prosecution,” he said.

The video shows a group of boys harassing the girls by passing comments and even blocking their way and making some demands.

The girls, however, managed to escape from the scene.
Thousands of people started an Arabic hashtag on Twitter demanding action. The video was uploaded on YouTube and had 60,000 views in just 24 hours after being uploaded.
Police officer Col. Atti Al-Qarshi said the police have not received any complaint, but they took action on their own to arrest the perpetrators.

The incident sparked a debate for a law to deal with such situation.

Suhaila Zain Alabideen of the National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) has expressed concern over the delay in introducing a law against harassment, the draft of which is being studied by the Shoura Council, an online newspaper said.

Researcher Nora Al-Zahrani has submitted a study on sexual harassment of women aged between 18 and 48, showing that 78 percent were subjected to sexual harassment and 92 women said sexual harassment is on the rise.

Hadi Al-Yami, a legal adviser, said a law is needed to deal with sexual harassment cases, which should be investigated by the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution and not merely by courts.

NSHR Secretary-General Khalid Al-Fakhri said sexual harassment issues fall within society’s concerns and the body is currently making serious efforts with relevant authorities to enact deterrent regulations.

Dr. Khaled Jalban, family and community medicine consultant at King Khalid University, stressed the need for clear regulations to protect women and children from all forms of harassment.

  14. Cameroon’s Maroua market hit by suicide blasts (BBC, July 22, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-33623818

“Two suicide bombers have detonated explosives in Cameroon’s northern city Maroua, killing at least 13 people. A local source told AFP news agency the bombers were two young girls who had disguised themselves as beggars.

One of the bombers detonated the explosives at the city’s central market, in what is the second such attack in the past week. The authorities have now extended a ban on wearing burkas to include the commercial capital Douala.

Previously the ban had only been in place in the country’s Far North region, after two suicide bomb attacks there earlier this month. Wednesday’s attack happened near to the border with Nigeria’s Borno state, where the militant Islamist group Boko Haram is most active.

The Cameroonian army uses the town of Maroua as the headquarters for its operations against the group, as part of a multinational force battling the militants in neighbouring parts of Nigeria.
President Paul Biya has described the attacks as “cowardly and ignoble”.

The militants have increasingly been using female suicide bombers as they are often able to smuggle bombs into public places without detection. No group has said it was behind the attack.”

  15. Somalia’s al-Shabab loses key Bardere stronghold (BBC, July 22, 2015)

“Somali forces backed by African Union troops have retaken one of the last remaining strongholds of Islamist militant group al-Shabab.

Kenyan and Somali government soldiers entered south-western Bardere town, which has been under al-Shabab control since 2008, backed by heavy weapons and air support, residents told the BBC.

A Somali army commander told the BBC troops took the town without a fight.
Pro-al-Shabab media have also confirmed the loss of the town.

The al-Qaeda-linked group is battling Somalia’s government for control of the country. A drone strike in the same town last week killed two al-Shabab commanders, residents said.

  16. Syria conflict: ‘Unprecedented’ assault on Zabadani (BBC, July 22, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-33624215

“The UN envoy for Syria says Syrian government air strikes have caused “unprecedented levels of destruction” and death in the town of Zabadani.

Large numbers of barrel bombs have reportedly been dropped on the area in the Qalamoun mountains north-west of Damascus, close to the Lebanese border.

Zabadani has been under attack for weeks by the Syrian army and fighters from Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement.

It is the last significant town held by rebel forces in the Qalamoun region. Its capture is seen as crucial to consolidating the government’s control over the border zone between Lebanon and Syria.

The army and Hezbollah launched an offensive to drive the rebels out of Zabadani on 3 July. Earlier this week, they advanced deeper into the town after having besieged it from all sides.

Citing local sources, Mr de Mistura said in a statement late on Tuesday that the Syrian air force had been dropping barrel bombs – large cylindrical containers filled with explosives and shrapnel – on areas in and around Zabadani.

It has caused “unprecedented levels of destruction and many deaths among the civilian population,” he was quoted by Reuters as saying.

An alliance of Islamist and jihadist rebel groups had retaliated by firing rockets and heavy mortar shells on the villages of al-Foua and Kefraya, near the northern city of Idlib, where a large number of civilians were trapped, Mr de Mistura added.

“In both cases, civilians are tragically caught in the middle of the fighting.” Overnight, there were fierce clashes and air strikes in the Zabadani area, causing casualties on both sides, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Wednesday morning.

The Syrian state news agency, Sana, meanwhile reported that soldiers had destroyed a 70m (330ft) tunnel used by rebel fighters to smuggle supplies from Zabadani to nearby Madaya.

More than 230,000 people have been killed since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began in March 2011. Four million others have fled abroad to escape the fighting and more than seven million have been displaced internally.

Earlier this month, the head of the UN’s refugee agency, Antonio Guterres, called it the “worst humanitarian crisis of our generation”.”

  17. Obama, Turkey’s Erdogan agree to stem flow of foreign fighters -White House

U.S. President Barack Obama and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan agreed in a telephone call on Wednesday to work together to “stem the flow of foreign fighters and secure Turkey’s border with Syria,” the White House said in a statement.

It said the two leaders also discussed deepening their cooperation in the fight against Islamic State, which has grabbed swaths of Syrian and Iraqi territory and declared a caliphate.

Thousands of foreign fighters have crossed through Turkey, a NATO member, to join Islamic State over the past few years.

The Turkish government has rejected accusations from the opposition that it has in the past tacitly supported Islamic State militants operating from Syria and had unwittingly opened the door to a suicide bombing that killed at least 32 people in a Turkish town near the Syrian border this week.

The White House said Obama had condemned Monday’s bombing in the Turkish town of Suruç.

“He conveyed condolences on behalf of the American people to the families of the victims, and the two leaders affirmed that the United States and Turkey stand united in the fight against terrorism,” the statement said.

  18. Iraqi Officials Say Baghdad Market Bombings Kill 26 People (abcnews, July 22, 2015)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/iraqi-officials-baghdad-market-bombing-kills-18-people-32621945

“A pair of car bombs exploded Wednesday at crowded popular markets in predominantly Shiite neighborhoods of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, killing at least 26 people and wounding 58, authorities said.

The first explosion took place in the impoverished neighborhood of al-Bayaa in southwestern Baghdad, a police official said. The blast killed at least 18 people and wounded 36, the official said.

Later Wednesday, a second car bomb detonated in the northeastern neighborhood of al-Shaab, killing at least eight people and wounding 22, police said.

Hospital officials corroborated the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to brief journalists.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks. The Islamic State militant group frequently targets Shiite areas across the country, as well as military checkpoints and government installations. The radical Sunni group seeks to destabilize the Shiite-led government in Baghdad and targets those they view as apostates. They hold roughly a third of Iraq and neighboring Syria in their self-declared “caliphate.”….”

  19. Nigeria’s Boko Haram crisis: Many dead in Gombe bombing (BBC, July 22, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-33631744

“Reports from Nigeria say at least two bombs have ripped through two bus stations in the northern city of Gombe.

At least 29 people have been killed in the blasts, a Red Cross official told the Reuters news agency.

Earlier in the day, suicide bombers killed at least 11 people in neighbouring Cameroon. At least 49 people were killed in blasts at a market in Gombe last week. That attack was blamed on Boko Haram militants.

The Islamist group, which often targets northern Nigeria, has stepped up attacks since President Muhammudu Buhari took office in May.

No group has said it is behind Wednesday evening’s attacks, although Boko Haram has targeted bus stations in the city before.

It is feared that the Gombe death toll will rise with reports of dozens of people injured. One witness told the AFP news agency that he had counted 30 dead bodies at one of the bus stations….”
