Afghan Official: Coalition Airstrike Kills 8 Afghan Troops (abcnews, July 20, 2015)
http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/afghan-official-coalition-airstrike-kills-afghan-troops-32559559
“An Afghan military official says an airstrike by the international coalition has killed eight Afghan soldiers in a province east of the capital, Kabul.
Provincial army commander Abdul Razaq says the strike took place Monday morning in Logar province’s district of Baraki Barak, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Kabul. He says five troops were also wounded in the strike.
Other Afghan officials also reported the strike, though they gave slightly different number of casualties.
District governor Mohammad Rahim Amin says the NATO strike was likely a mistake, due to bad coordination in an area where Taliban insurgents are highly active.
A U.S. military official in Afghanistan, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said they are aware of an incident in Logar and are investigating it.”
Report: ISIS steps up use of chemicals on battlefields in Iraq and Syria (CNN, July 20, 2015)
http://edition.cnn.com/2015/07/19/middleeast/isis-chemical-weapons/index.html
“ISIS recently used devices filled with chemical agents against Kurdish forces and civilians in both Iraq and Syria, a joint investigation by two independent organizations has found.
The findings build on previous reporting that ISIS (the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria) has begun to adapt both suicide bombs and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) to include chlorine and other chemicals and may seek to exploit the use of chemicals as it develops new weapons.
The two U.K.-based groups — Conflict Armament Research (CAR) and Sahan Research — sent teams to investigate allegations that ISIS used chemical munitions on three occasions last month. Two of the incidents occurred in Hasakah province in northern Syria, where ISIS is locked in battle with the Kurdish YPG group. The third involved a 120 mm mortar that landed near Kurdish positions at the Mosul Dam in northern Iraq but failed to explode.
CAR said this was “the first documented use by (ISIS) forces of projectile-delivered chemical agents against Kurdish forces and civilian targets.”…”

“U.S. Navy Petty Officer Randall Smith, wounded in a shooting rampage in Tennessee, died early Saturday, according to a family member. He is the fifth American service member killed in the attack.
Darlene Proxmire, Smith’s step-grandmother, said the logistics specialist was shot in the attack at the Navy Operational Support Center in Chattanooga. It was one of two military sites in the city that were targeted by a gunman Thursday.
The U.S. Navy confirmed the death, saying Smith died at 2:17 a.m.
Smith saw the shooter and warned people around him, according to family members. But he was unable to get away. Smith was shot in the liver, colon and stomach, said his grandmother, Linda Wallace….”
4 Italian construction workers kidnapped in Libya (CNN, July 20, 2015)
http://edition.cnn.com/2015/07/20/us/libya-italians-kidnapped/index.html
“Four Italian employees working for a construction firm on the western coast of Libya have been kidnapped, the Italian Foreign Ministry said Monday.
“We are busy trying to find the people that were kidnapped and trying to solve this problem,” Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said. The workers were abducted Sunday evening, and their families were told about it overnight.
“It’s very difficult after just a few hours to understand the nature of this kidnapping, who is responsible for it,” Gentiloni said.
A crisis team has been activated to assist and coordinate efforts to free the employees of the Bonatti construction company, who were working for Melitha Oil and Gas, the ministry said.
Bonatti is based in Parma, Italy, and specializes in jobs in hazardous areas, according to the company’s website.
Earlier this year, Italy closed its embassy in Libya and urged all Italian citizens to leave the country.”
Turkey – At least 28 dead in suspected Isis suicide attack on Turkish border town
A bomb has exploded in the Turkish town of Suruc near the Syrian border killing at least 28 people and wounding nearly 100 more.
The suicide bombing, which Turkish officials say is believed to have been carried out by Isis, occurred at midday on Monday outside a cultural centre.
The town is situated just 10km across the border from Kobani in Syria, where Kurdish fighters have been locked in a fierce battle with Isis for control.
One senior official in Ankara, Turkey’s capital, told Reuters they believed the attack was a “retaliation for the Turkish government’s efforts to fight terrorism”.
One witness, who said his name was Mehmet, said: “I saw more than 20 bodies. I think the number of wounded is more than 50. They are still being put into ambulances. It was a huge explosion, we all shook.”
Officials from the interior ministry have said they believe the death toll could rise.

Chattanooga Shooting: FBI Recovers Gunman’s Disturbing Diary
With more than 30 FBI agents due to arrive today in Chattanooga, a diary belonging to the gunman and FBI interviews with his parents paint a picture of a disturbed, suicidal young man using drugs, preparing for bankruptcy and facing an appearance in criminal court, according to a representative of the shooter’ s family.
Four days after the shooting, the FBI has not found any connection to overseas terrorist groups, but Mohammod Abdulazeez’s diary says that as far back as 2013, he wrote about having suicidal thoughts and “becoming a martyr” after losing his job due to his drug use, both prescription and non-prescription drugs, the family representative said.
In a downward spiral, Abdulazeez would abuse sleeping pills, opioids, painkillers and marijuana, along with alcohol, the representative said.

TIME – Chattanooga Shooter Failed to See That True Islam Rejects Violence
[…]True Islam rejects violent jihad, whether it be against Muslims or non-Muslims. The Holy Quran 22:40-41 explains that Muslims should fight only in specific situations: “Permission to fight is given to those against whom war is made, because they have been wronged,” and to do so to protect “churches, synagogues, cloisters, and mosques,” from attack. True Islam recognizes those generals fought in self-defense for universal freedom of conscience.
[…]true Islam champions a bloodless “jihad of the pen” to engage in dialogue regarding matters of faith. The Holy Prophet Muhammad’s life illustrates this belief. When he became the ruler of Mecca, he forgave his former persecutors on the condition that they respect freedom of religion for all faiths—paganism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

http://www.breitbart.com/london/2015/07/20/mass-murderer-anders-breivik-wins-place-on-oslo-university-course/
Norwegian killer Anders Breivik has been accepted onto a political science course at the University of Oslo.
“MASS MURDERER” ANDERS BREIVIK WINS PLACE ON OSLO UNIVERSITY COURSE
Breivik, who killed 77 people in Oslo and at a Labour Party youth summer camp on the island of Utoya in 2011, will be enrolled at the course alongside survivors of his attack and relatives of victims, RT reports.
The Local reports that under Norwegian law, prisoners are entitled to receive a university education if they meet the academic requirements. However, Breivik will spend the course studying from his cell and will be denied access to online resources.
“The communication between the university and Breivik will take place via a contact person in prison,” university rector Petter Ottersen said.
Breivik is also unlikely to receive a degree at the end of the course as five out of the nine modules needed to pass would require attendance at group seminars.
Breivik went on his killing spree claiming he was fighting multiculturalism and a “Muslim invasion” of Norway. He is serving a 21-year prison sentence that can be extended indefinitely if he is deemed to pose a continuing threat.
Lisbeth Kristine Røyneland, the leader of a victims’ support group, told AFP: “It hurts that he is able to study but it’s like that in Norway,” adding that the announcement “hurts even more” as it comes just days after the anniversary of the attacks.
“But whether he reads novels or political science books doesn’t matter to us as long as he remains behind bars.”

Muhammadu Buhari, Barack Obama discuss Nigeria’s Boko Haram (BBC, July 20, 2015)
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-33600681
“Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari is meeting his US counterpart, Barack Obama, to discuss the fight against Islamist militant group Boko Haram.
President Obama’s wife Michelle got involved in the online campaign, #BringBackOurGirls, after the group kidnapped some 200 girls last year.
The US sent surveillance flights over Nigeria to help locate them.
However, the US refuses to sell weapons to Nigeria because of concerns over its army’s human right record.
Mr Buhari wrote in an article published in The Washington Post just before meeting Mr Obama that “our allies can provide much-needed military training and intelligence as our soldiers take the war effort to Boko Haram”.
He also wrote that he was seeking US assistance in “locating and returning $150 billion in funds stolen in the past decade and held in foreign bank accounts on behalf of former, corrupt officials”.
At the outset of the meeting, President Obama praised the March elections won by Mr Buhari as “an affirmation of Nigeria’s commitment to democracy,” says AFP news agency.
President Buhari replied by saying Nigeria will “ever be grateful” for the US help in ensuring the elections were free fair and credible.
Mr Buhari, a former military ruler, was invited to Washington shortly after becoming the first opposition candidate to win a national election.

Yemen conflict: Loyalists ‘enter last Aden district’ (BBC, July 20, 2015)
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-33594935
“Forces loyal to Yemen’s exiled government say they have advanced into the last part of the southern city of Aden still held by Houthi rebels.
A spokesman said on Monday that local militias and army units, backed by Saudi-led coalition air strikes, had taken most of the Tawahi district.
On Friday, the government declared that the city had been “liberated” after four months of fierce fighting.
Clashes continued over the weekend, however, leaving dozens of people dead.
On Sunday, rebel artillery fire struck the densely-populated northern suburb of Dar Saad, where many displaced people live, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said.
The medical charity said its hospital in the area received 150 casualties, among them women, children and elderly people. Forty-two people were dead on arrival and tens of other bodies had to be turned away because the hospital was overwhelmed.
MSF added that it had witnessed “massive retaliation against civilians by the Houthis” and warned that it feared targeted killings of civilian populations would recur in the south of Yemen as the rebels were driven out of areas they control.
The Houthis denied targeting civilians in Dar Saad and blamed “media deception”.
Fighters from the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) and soldiers advanced into Tawahi, at the western tip of the Aden peninsula, late on Sunday after securing the neighbouring Crater district, militia spokesman Ali al-Ahmedi said….”
Desperate migrants try to swim to Britain from France (BBC, July 20, 2015)
http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-33584706
“Migrants desperate to get to England from the French port of Calais are now trying to swim across the English Channel – with disastrous consequences, reports the BBC’s Paddy O’Connell.
Last summer, sitting outside his pub near Dover, landlord Nigel Wyndmus saw a small dinghy. A cutter from the coastguard drew up alongside.
At first he mistook what was happening for a training exercise.
“The boat was just a few hundred yards out,” Mr Wyndmus said, “and we realised that it was illegal immigrants trying to get to England.”
He added: “People coming across on boats was not really considered an option” – he believed it was all done by stowaways boarding lorries and trying to break into the Channel Tunnel.
But now it seems that an unknown number of migrants have made the desperate decision to swim towards England from the French coast.
While some may try to stagger their journey by taking advantage of small dinghies or yachts, we now know that others try to swim the whole way – across one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.
After months of research by Norway’s Dagbladet newspaper, the identities of two men who tried to do this was revealed.
They bought a wetsuit on the same day last October and were never heard from again.
They may have tried to board a boat of the kind seen by locals in the Coastguard pub, or they may have decided to swim the whole way.
Journalist Anders Fjellberg was alarmed when he first read that a body had been found in a wetsuit in southern Norway.
“My initial reaction was: I hope it’s not somebody I know, because I surf and the surf community in Norway is quite small – and if someone is found in a wetsuit they could have been a surfer,” he recalls.
But after checks with the police, the case was linked to another discovery of human remains – also in a wetsuit – but this time in the Netherlands.
“The Dutch police managed to trace both of the wetsuits by the serial number to a sports shop in Calais. So we went there to learn how anyone could be that desperate,” says Mr Fjellberg. “What is it about this place and these people that drives them to this kind of desperation?”
At first the trail went cold, as the shop staff said the men who bought the suits looked like Afghans…..”
CANADA – MONTREAL – Nejib Belhaj-Chtioui pleads guilty to terror hoax charges
36-year-old Montreal man has 8 months left to serve of 20-month sentence
Nejib Belhaj-Chtioui has been sentenced to 20 months behind bars after he pleaded guilty Monday to two terror hoax charges.
Belhaj-Chtioui was arrested on Dec. 7, 2014 at Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport after he disembarked from a flight from Tunisia.
According to the warrant issued for his arrest, Belhaj-Chtioui was alleged to have transmitted information and committed acts that gave investigators reason to believe could be linked to terrorist activities, between May 13 and May 20, 2011. ?
After pleading guilty in court today, a judge sentenced him to 20 months in jail, which leaves Belhaj-Chtioui with eight months left to serve.

Suspected Boko Haram Fighters Kill 23 in North Cameroon (nbcnews, July 20, 2015)
http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/suspected-boko-haram-fighters-kill-23-north-cameroon-32578015
“Suspected Boko Haram militants have killed more than 20 people including multiple children in their latest attack on northern Cameroon, easily overwhelming the few soldiers posted at the targeted village, residents said Monday.
More than 80 assailants stormed the village of Kamouna, located near Lake Chad in the northern strip of Cameroon that lies between Nigeria and Chad, on Sunday night, said Pastor Edward Ngosu, a Nigerian missionary who has been based in the village for four years.
Only seven soldiers were present at the time, and they were quickly overwhelmed, Ngosu said. “They began shooting in the air to scare the attackers” but were unsuccessful, he said, adding that 23 people were killed.
Residents had asked the military for more protection last week after suspected Boko Haram fighters conducted a raid near the village and stole livestock, said Bachirou Ahmad, another resident.
Communications Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary said Monday he had no information on the attack.
Nigeria-based Boko Haram, which this year became the West African franchise of the Islamic State group, has targeted northern Cameroon repeatedly in retaliation for Cameroon’s participation in a regional military effort against the extremists.
Last week, bombs planted at a bar in north Cameroon by suspected Boko Haram fighters killed 14 people.
Neighboring Chad, another contributor to the regional campaign, has seen three separate attacks in its capital, N’Djamena, since mid-June.”
ISIL allegedly performs Eid prayer in ?stanbul, calls for war
Hundreds of supporters of the radical terrorist organization Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) allegedly performed Eid prayers in Istanbul, for a second time, in which they criticized the Turkish government and made a call for war.
The Turkish media reported on Sunday that a group of ISIL militants — allegedly consisting of 1,000 ISIL members — gathered at a picnic site in Istanbul’s Ömerli neighborhood to perform the prayers signaling the end of the holy month of Ramadan and the beginning of the celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
According to the news agency Sputnik Türkiye, the prayer was led by Halis Bayancuk, also known as Abu Hanzala, who is alleged to be one of ISIL’s most high-ranking members in Turkey. He allegedly called on the supporters after the prayer to engage in war.
As part of his 14-minute speech, Bayancuk, who is said to be in charge of the al-Qaeda network in Turkey, criticized democracy and called for the formation of a state governed by religious law. Also criticizing the Turkish government, Bayancuk said the Gülen movement, inspired by the Turkish Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, was being unfair towards members of ISIL and al-Qaeda and was instigating arbitrary detainments through its alleged contacts in law enforcement and judicial circles. However Bayancuk gave no details on how a civil society organization could instigate detentions. The Gülen movement is also known as the Hizmet movement.
Bayancuk was detained in raids against al-Qaeda cells by the police and gendarmerie units in six provinces across Turkey on Jan. 14, 2014, but was let go after no indictment was prepared against him. It is unclear why the prosecutor’s office did not indict him, although several others have already been charged.
The government removed the police chiefs who undertook the operation from the investigation while reassigning the prosecutor who handled the case and the judge who authorized the raids.
It was stated back in 2014, when Bayancuk was detained, that wiretapped conversations had him telling other members of al-Qaeda that the conquest of Syria was almost over and that Turkey would be next. “We will conquer ?stanbul, God willing,” he was heard saying.
ISIL forbids its followers to join prayers in mosques located in countries not under the group’s control. A similar gathering was also held last year. The ?stanbul Governor’s Office made an announcement stating that the group had not obtained the necessary permission to perform their prayer on public property, after images of the prayer caused a public outcry.
ISIL is also known as a Salafi extremist militant group and self-proclaimed caliphate and Islamic state led by Sunni Arabs from Iraq and Syria. As of March of this year, the group is said to have exerted control over territory in Iraq and Syria occupied by nearly 10 million people.
