“A suicide car bomb has killed at least 33 people, mostly women and children, near a military base in Afghanistan, officials say.

  7. Australian Federal Police cancel Eid dinner after backlash from Muslim community

The Australian Federal Police has cancelled an annual Ramadan dinner after Muslim community leaders vowed to boycott the event.

In a sign of deepening fractures between the Muslim community and Australian authorities, a petition was circulated on July 2, urging imams and other representatives to boycott dinners in Sydney and Melbourne because they were a tokenistic attempt “to create a false image of co-operation, harmony and trust which could not be further from the truth”.

“I can’t break fast with those who authorise flash bombs to be used against families,” said Australian Muslim Women’s Association spokeswoman Silma Ihram, who was one of 840 people to sign the petition.

The authors of the petition, a group called Concerned Muslims Australia, said police have targeted Muslims in “phoney raids” and the government has introduced legislation to “demonise, marginalise and victimise the Muslim community”.

“It is incredulous that the same agencies that harass, discriminate and target the Muslim community would expect it to break bread with them,” the group said. “We interpret these overtures as insult to injury.”

The AFP sent an email to community leaders last week, saying the Sydney Eid dinner on July 21 will not go ahead. The Melbourne dinner on July 24 is still going ahead.

“The AFP has consulted with community representatives and as a result has made the decision not to proceed with an event in Sydney this year,” the email from the Community Liaison Team said.

Among the leaders who supported the boycott were author and social justice campaigner Randa Abdel-Fattah and Sydney lawyers Mariam Veiszadeh and Lydia Shelly.

One community leader told Fairfax Media that so-called moderate voices were increasingly joining the calls to turn on the AFP and other government agencies.
    *******************************************************************
Last year, the Grand Mufti of Australia, Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohamed?, boycotted the AFP’s Eid dinner due to proposed anti-terrorism laws.
    *******************************************************************
Ms Veiszadeh said previous efforts at community engagement had been disheartening and leaders felt like they were being used “as a rubber stamp for draconian legislation”.

“We have been continuously echoing our communities’ concerns to the Abbott Government but it largely seems to fall on deaf ears,” she said.

Ms Shelly said community leaders were suffering from “engagement fatigue”.

In a statement, Concerned Muslims Australia hailed the cancellation of the dinner as proof of the “abundant strength in the unity of the Muslim community”.

An AFP spokeswoman said they will conduct an alternative event at a later date.

“The decision not to host this year’s dinner shows that the AFP and its partner agencies are consulting with and responding to the community,” she said.

  8. Egypt sets curbs on mosque seclusion

Cairo: Egyptian authorities have set strict rules for going into spiritual seclusion in mosques in the mostly Muslim country, the latest move in an inexorable government crackdown on militant Islamists.

Devout Muslims traditionally spend the 10 last days of the holy month of Ramadan in mosques for intense worshipping and meditation following the example of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). The lunar month is expected to end on July 17.

The Ministry of Waqf (religious affairs) has confined Ramadan seclusion, known as I’tikaf, to major mosques, banning the observance of this Sunna (the prophet’s tradition) in small prayer places usually run out of the state’s control.

According to the rules announced by the ministry, the seclusion should be limited to worshippers residing in areas where these mosques are located, a condition verified by their identity cards.

Applications for seclusion should also be approved by imams of those mosques.

The ministry said that the measures are aimed at preventing extremists from “sneaking” into mosques.

The ministry has set up an operations room to monitor the situation in the 3,187 mosques designated for seclusion across Egypt, according to media.

Violations of the rules would be deemed acts of illegal gatherings that could be punished by jailing.

The restrictions are part of a clampdown that has targeted the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood since 2013 when the army toppled president Mohammad Mursi, a senior leader in the Islamist group, following enormous street protests against his rule.

The government has since sought to tighten grip on mosques, denying the Brotherhood and allied groups a major forum to influence devout Muslims.

“The Ministry of Waqfs has refused to allow seclusion in a number of mosques because the Brotherhood and some [ultra-conservative] Salafists planned to manipulate those mosques for political gains,” said Abdul Nasser Nessim, a senior official at the ministry.

Reversing its earlier criticism of the government’s policy on mosques, the Salafist Call movement, the religious wing of the Islamist Al Nour Party, has welcomed the latest curbs.

“We are trying hard to comply with the law and stick to the conditions set by the Ministry of Waqfs in mosques specified for observing seclusion,” Ahmad Shukry, a senior member of the Salafist Call, said.

“We have no problem in having an imam appointed by the ministry to be responsible for overseeing seclusion.”

Salafists used to dominate mosques mainly in rural areas.

Worshippers have reacted differently to the latest I’itakf regulations.

“This arrangement is purely political. Why should I be prevented from going into seclusion in a mosque outside my district?’” said a man, who gave his first name only as Farhat. “And why should my personal data made public? Throughout Islam’s history, the mosque has always been a place for Muslims to meet and discuss the matters related to their life and religion.”

To Mahmoud Al Hussainini, this is not the case.

“These measures may be strict, but they are necessary to guarantee worshippers’ safety,” said the 65-year-old Muslim man. “They ensure that no strange extremists will take refuge in mosques as was the case in the past,” he added. “We have suffered enough from militants and we all should cooperate with the government in protecting our country.”

Egypt has experienced a series of deadly attacks by radical Islamists since Mursi’s overthrow.

13-year-old boy brutally murdered in Sylhet

Police have made no arrests four days after a thirteen-year-old boy was brutally tortured to death for his alleged involvement in theft in Sylhet.

A shocking video of torturing the boy has been leaked on the internet.

The 28-minute video showed how the thirteen-year-old Sheikh Samiul Alam Rajon was subjected to brutal torture before he succumbed to his injuries.

The video showed Rajon being tied up to a pole of a shop at Kumargaon Bus Station while at least four to five people beat and tortured him in various ways.

Every time Rajon cried out in pain, the torturers were heard to laugh loud. They even made fun poking him in his private parts. When Rajan wants some water, the men tell him to drink his own sweat.

The boy was vegetable vendor and son of micro-bus driver Sheikh Azizur Rahman.

After killing the boy, the culprits tried to hide the body.

However, locals nabbed one Muhit Alam, 32, in connection with the incident and handed him over to police.

Akhter Hossain, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Police Station, said police filed a murder case, accusing Muhit, his brother Kamrul Islam, 24, their associates Ali Hayder alias Ali, 34, and watchman Moyna Mia alias Boro Moyna, 45, of the murder.

Seven-day remand would be sought for Muhit, the OC added.

On July 8 Muhit and his associates picked up Rajon on allegation of stealing. Later his body was found from an ambulance on the same day.

      • Rajon killing: Prime accused Kamrul arrested in Jeddah – Saudi Arabia

Kamrul Islam, prime accused in a case of killing Shamiul Islam Rajon, was detained in Jeddah, capital city of Saudi Arabia, on Monday night.

Kamrul was handed over to Saudi police around 8:00pm after he was held by Bangladeshi expatriates responding call of visiting state minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam.

Acting consul general (Jeddah) Mokammel told news media in the night.

He said, “Saudi police will not keep him detained as there is no case against him here. So, we have taken initiative to send back to the country.”

Meanwhile, a Sylhet court placed Muhith Alam, who was arrested soon after the death of Rajon, on a five-day remand.

Judge of Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court Farhana Yasmeen passed the order after police produced him before the court with a seven-day remand plea.

Jalalabad police filed the murder case accusing Muhit and his brother Kamrul Islam, 24, their accomplice Ali Haider, 34, and watchman Moyna Mia alias Boro Moyna, 45, the OC said.

The police officer said he sent a letter to Dhaka Special Branch of police to issue an order so that Muhith’s brother Kamrul Islam, who is a Saudi expatriate, cannot leave country.

Kamrul came to Sylhet a month ago to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr.

On Wednesday, Rajon was beaten tied to a pole, as if he were a beast. He screamed for help, cried for water and begged for his life. But the culprits laughed and jeered at him. One of them even filmed the horrendous scene to share it on Facebook. Rajon died later.

Son of Sheikh Azizur Rahman of Badeali village in sadar upazila, Rajon used to help his family by selling vegetables.

After the killing, the culprits were taking his body on a microbus to dump it in a secluded place, some 200 yards from the torture spot.

They caught attention of some locals. Chased, three of the group fled but Muhit was caught. He was handed over to police.

A 28-minute clip of Rajon’s torture has gone viral, triggering a firestorm of protests in the social media and public outrage in Sylhet. Locals formed a human chain near his house yesterday, demanding maximum punishment to the murderers.

  10. SWEDEN – Long waiting list for clitoris reconstruction surgeries

The procedure was introduced in Sweden in January. So far, six surgeries have been performed and over 20 women are on a waiting list. One of them is Mariam, who told Radio Sweden: “I want to look like all other women. I want a normal vagina. That’s what I’m after.”

Mariam underwent circumcision twice; first at the age of six and then again when she was 12 – because her mother did not think she had been properly circumcised the first time around.

Mariam has undergone the most extreme form of female genital mutilation ”They removed everything,” she says, “the clitoris and labia – and then they sewed me up, leaving only a small hole so I could pee”.

Now, Mariam has been told that the clitoris reconstruction surgery could help her – both physically and aesthetically.

“I was shown pictures of people who have done it. Before the surgery they looked just like me, and then afterwards it looked great. They were 3D images. If I end up looking like that, I’ll be very pleased,” says Mariam.

The procedure restores function in women’s clitorises and involves removing scar tissue and revealing the part of the clitoris that is still there, mobilising it forward and putting it in its place, as surgeon Hannes Sigurjónsson has explained. So far, he has performed six surgeries at Stockholm’s Karolinska Hospital and says he is pleased with the results

”They’ve all developed clitoris tissue and they have developed more feeling in their clitorises. Those who suffered from urinary tract infections have seen improvements, too,” says Sigurjónsson.

The procedure was developed around a decade ago by a French doctor and has since been carried out at just a few clinics around the world: in Paris, Barcelona, California, Burkina Faso and now, Sweden. And there is great interest in the procedure, says Sigurjónsson, who has received requests from women in Sweden and abroad.

Sigurjónsson says women from around Sweden and Scandinavia as well as from the UK have been in touch. They are supposed to get a referral from a local women’s clinic but many contact Sigurjónsson directly, on their own accord.

For many women who have undergone circumcision it can be hard to visit a gynecologist. Some lack confidence in the health-care system and are not happy with the way they have been treated. Mariam, for instance, first went to her local women’s clinic but was not offered a referral.

Mariam says the doctors at the women’s clinic told her to think things over for four months and then get in touch again if she still wanted to go through the surgery. They advised her to get know her body better first, to try masturbating. But Mariam had already made her mind up.

”I don’t even know what an orgasm feels like, I don’t know if I’ve ever had one. The main reason I want to have this surgery is that I want to look like other women, I want a normal vagina. That’s what I’m after and to feel more down there, well that would be a bonus,” says Mariam.

“But mainly I want a part of my body back and I want to look like a normal woman.”

  12. Son of Boston Police capt. charged in connection with ISIS terrorism plot

    BOSTON (WHDH) –

A man from Adams has been arrested and charged in connection with a plot to engage in terrorism on behalf of ISIS.

Alexander Ciccolo, 23, was charged with being a felon in possession of firearms. The criminal complaint was unsealed on Monday.

Ciccolo is the son of Boston Police Captain Robert Ciccolo, who was one of the first responders to the Boston Marathon bombing. Capt. Ciccolo is in charge of the Boston Police Department’s 911 call center. He has served with the department for more than 25 years.

According to the complaint affidavit, Alexander Ciccolo took delivery of four firearms on July 4, 2015, which he had ordered from a person who was cooperating with members of the Western Massachusetts Joint Terrorism Task Force. Ciccolo was arrested immediately after taking delivery of the firearms, which included a Glock 17-9mm pistol and a Glock 20-10 mm pistol.

Ciccolo had previously been convicted of a crime punishable by more than a year in jail and was prohibited from possessing firearms.
    **********************************************************************
It is alleged that Ciccolo is a supporter of the Islamic State group. According to an affidavit, Ciccolo spoke with a cooperating witness in recorded conversations about his plans to commit acts of terrorism inspired by ISIS — including setting off improvised explosive devices such as pressure cookers filled with black powder, nails, ball bearings and glass — in places where large numbers of people were gather, such as college cafeterias.
    ********************************************************************
The FBI arranged for the cooperating witness to meet Ciccolo, who told the witness he had a plan to engage in domestic terrorism operations. The witness agreed to participate with Ciccolo.

On June 24, 2015, Ciccolo met with the cooperating witness in person in Pittsfield. The meeting was audio recorded. During the meeting, Ciccolo spoke about his plans to travel to another state to conduct terrorist attacks on civilians, members of the US military and law enforcement personnel.

Ciccolo told the cooperating witness he would attack two different bars and a police station. He also stated he planned to use improvide explosive devices during the attack to include pressure cooker bombs and/or portable microwave bombs.

On June 30, 2015, Ciccolo had another meeting with the cooperating witness in Springfield, which was also audio-recorded. Ciccolo discussed his plan to conduct an attack in another state. He described a list of items, including four AK-47s, two sniper rifles, four handguns and improvised grenades.

During the same meeting, Ciccolo explained he had changed his plans from targeting a police station to targeting a university, because there were more people at the university. He said he wanted to conduct the attack before Ramadan was over, and no later than July 31.

Ciccolo said he intended to place a few explosives on campus before the attack and would plan to attack the cafeteria at lunchtime. He said he wanted to use pressure cookers to make a big explosion. He also said he was inspired by the Boston Marathon bombing, using the same materials and emptying fireworks into a pressure cooker.

Agents also allegedly found several partially constructed Molotov cocktails in Ciccolo’s apartment.

A detention hearing has been scheduled for July 14 at 3:#0 p.m. in U.S. District Court in Springfield.

[…]“This is a very bad person arrested before he could do very bad things,” one senior federal official briefed on the arrest told ABC News.

According to the FBI, Ciccolo attempted to stab a nurse in the head with a pen during a routine screening, “leaving a hole in the nurse’s skin.”

[…] Prior to allegedly becoming an ISIS sympathizer, Ciccolo was photographed attending an anti-nuclear “peace walk” in 2012.

Jun Yasuda, a Buddhist who walked with Ciccolo in July 2012, told ABC News Ciccolo appeared to be “concerned about peace… and understood about non-violent protest.”

“We walked together after Fukushima, and he realized that he had an open mind and that people were wonderful,” Yasuda said.
