“A car bomb exploded outside the Italian Consulate in downtown Cairo early Saturday morning, significantly damaging part of the building, police said.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.”

    • The Right Scoop – TPM pushing 1969 Nixon memo that predicted 10 ft water rise, underwater cities, all by 2000

[…]Acknowledging that there was as yet no accurate way to measure carbon in the atmosphere, Moynihan nevertheless suggested: “this very clearly is a problem…one that can seize the imagination of persons normally indifferent to projects of apocalyptic change.” Ever the technocrat, Moynihan then explained how carbon dioxide could change the climate, warning that, if left unchecked, it might “raise the level of the sea by 10 feet. Goodbye to New York. Goodbye Washington, for that matter.” He suggested that “fairly mammoth man-made efforts” could “countervail the CO2 rise. (E.g., stop burning fossil fuels.)”[…]

  4. BREITBART – Watchdog: U.S. Taxpayers Funded Development of Sharia Law System in Afghanistan

The U.S. government has spent more than $1 billion in American taxpayer funds on programs to develop the rule of law in Afghanistan, including efforts to improve a judicial system that incorporates Islamic Sharia law, reports a watchdog agency appointed by Congress.

According to the watchdog agency known as the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), the Departments of Defense (DOD), Justice (DOJ), State (State), and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) have spent more than $1 billion since 2003 on at least 66 completed and ongoing programs aimed at developing the rule of law in Afghanistan.

[…]A portion of the more than $1 billion spent on rule of law development efforts has been devoted to improving the formal and informal systems in Afghanistan that incorporate Sharia law.

[…]SIGAR only reviewed 6 of the 66 U.S. funded programs aimed at improving the rule of law, which means there are likely more than two programs devoted to improving the country’s Sharia law system

[…]SIGAR adds that the amount of money spent by U.S. agencies on rule of law programs since 2003 could exceed the more than $1 billion it identified because DOD could only account for some funds spent.

[…]“The United States faces pervasive corruption, lack of will, and other challenges in trying to improve the Afghan justice sector,” it adds. “After 13 years and over $1 billion spent, U.S. agencies are still not consistently assessing the sustainability of their rule of law programs in Afghanistan.”

  5. Tunisia backlash against Britain as PM warns of terror ‘repercussions’

Nabil Ammar, Tunisian ambassador to the UK, says the Foreign Office urging UK tourists to leave Tunisia ‘is what the terrorists want’

Britain’s advice that tourists should leave Tunisia because of the risk of another terror attack will “have repercussions”, the country’s prime minister has said.

Habib Essid said he would telephone David Cameron on Friday to respond to Foreign Office advice that the North African nation was unsafe for holidays.

Tunisia’s ambassador to London has already warned Britain is playing into the hands for terrorists with the new threat warning, which is likley to devastate the Tunisian tourist industry.

Mr Essid said: “We will ring the British prime minister to tell him we have done everything we can to protect all British interests and those of others countries – that’s out duty.”

“Britain is free to take whatever decision it likes – it’s a sovereign country – but we too are a sovereign country and we have a position to take.”

He did not elaborate on what that position might be but he told politicians that the British decision would “have repercussions.”

  6. A little mosque from Turkey for Cuba’s Muslims goes a long way

Turkey’s Diyanet Foundation (TDV) has inaugurated a masjid (a small mosque), in Havana, Cuba, the first proper Muslim shrine of its kind for the faithful in the island country, ahead of a planned mosque to be built by Turkey.

Turkey will be the first country to build a mosque in Cuba where a small Muslim community thrives. The TDV, an affiliate of Turkey’s state-run Presidency of Religious Affairs (DIB), opened a masjid in the Cuban capital of Havana. The masjid is located inside a historical building allocated for the use of Muslims,

[…]The DIB, which oversees mosques in Turkey, has already constructed more than 100 mosques around the world with construction ongoing in 38 different locations.

Turkey has been widely embraced by Muslims since the government improved relations with Muslim countries and Muslim populations around the world in an effort to boost its soft power. The DIB is involved in the construction of mosques from the United States to Somalia, from Russia to the Philippines.

  7. MALAYSIA – Construction of $21 million Quran printing centre begins

The construction of the world’s second largest Quran printing centre has begun with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak performing the ground breaking ceremony.

The centre, known as Kompleks Nasyrul Quran, is built on a 6.15ha land located at Precinct 14 here.

Naysrul Quran is Arabic for Quran distribution.

The project costs RM60mil (S$21 million), which includes the building, and printing and binding machines.

It was announced by Najib when tabling the 2015 Budget last October.

In his speech yesterday, Najib said the centre was expected to print up to three million copies of the Quran a year to be distributed worldwide.

“The centre will become a new landmark of Putrajaya and Malaysia as a country that upholds and spreads the teachings and civilisation of Islam.

“The initiative also supplements the Malaysian Syariah Index, the first ever syariah index in the world which was launched earlier this year,” he said.

The syariah index will serve as a benchmark to determine if the country is fulfilling the objectives of Islamic principles.

The Malaysian Syariah Index will gauge objectively and scientifically Malaysia’s commitment in achieving the five aspects of the Maqasid Syariah (objective of Islamic principles).

    • Islamic State Releases New Footage of 2014 Tikrit Massacre

Baghdad: The Islamic State jihadist group on Saturday released new footage of its June 2014 massacre of hundreds of mostly Shiite military recruits in Tikrit.

The highest estimates put at 1,700 the number of cadets IS gunmen captured at the Speicher military base near Tikrit and executed at various locations, mostly in the city’s former presidential palace complex.

The 22-minute video posted on jihadist forums, which included both new and previously released footage, shows hundreds of executions, providing further evidence of the scope of the atrocity.

Some of the victims are shown pleading for their lives, attempting to explain they had only just joined the security forces.

The grisly footage shows executions on an industrial scale, with victims falling out of dump trucks and later lying side by side in shallow mass graves before being shot dead one by one.

The killing went on into the night and the video shows an excavator being used to move piles of bodies.

Around 600 bodies have been exhumed since government and allied fighters retook Tikrit from IS in April but many of the victims were dumped into the Tigris river.

An unidentified IS leader in military uniform is seen in the video released on Saturday.

“This is a message I address to the whole world and especially to the Rafidha dogs, I tell them we are coming,” he said, using the pejorative term IS employs for Shiite Muslims.

The video was released four days after a court in Baghdad sentenced 24 men to death by hanging over the Speicher massacre.

The trial lasted only a few hours, and the convictions were based mostly on confessions the defendants claimed were obtained under torture.

Combined with a call by the country’s top Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani for Iraqis to take up arms against them, the Speicher massacre played a key role in the mass recruitment of Shiite volunteers to fight the jihadists.

  10. Tunisia terrorism: Five suspected extremists shot dead amid fears of another terror attack

Five suspected jihadists have been shot dead in Tunisia amid fears of another terror attack following the massacre in Sousse.

Security forces killed the men yesterday during a counter-terrorism operation near the town of El Ktar in Gafsa governate.

The alleged extremists were reportedly found with four Kalashnikovs, the same weapon used by beach gunman Seifeddine Rezgui, a pistol, two grenades, several mobile phones, documents and a large sum of cash.

Tunisian news website Kapitalis reported that Mourad Gharsalli, who was wanted by the interior ministry on terror charges, was among the dead.

The 27-year-old was thought to be a member of al-Qaeda affiliate the Okba Ibn Nafaa Brigade and had been implicated in several attacks, including a deadly raid on a minister’s home and murdering members of the Tunisian National Guard.

The interior ministry put out a statement saying a “terrorist group” was operating in near the Algerian border in Gafsa and appealing for information in February.[…]

  11. China: Uighurs Deported From Thailand Wanted to Join Jihad

China’s official news agency said that 109 ethnic Uighurs who Thailand deported to China amid international criticism that the refugees could face persecution had been on their way to Turkey, Syria or Iraq to take part in holy war.

On Thursday, Thai authorities sent back the Uighurs, who had been in Thailand for over a year and claimed to be Turkish, after determining they were Chinese.

China’s official Xinhua News Agency said late Saturday that the 109 illegal immigrants had been on their way “to join jihad,” and that 13 of them had fled China after being implicated in terrorist activities. Another two had escaped detention, Xinhua said, citing the Ministry of Public Security.

The repatriations were criticized by the U.N. refugee agency and rights groups. In Turkey’s capital, Istanbul, protesters ransacked the Thai consulate to denounce the decision.

The Uighurs are a Turkic-speaking Muslim minority in China’s far western region of Xinjiang. The group has complained of harsh cultural and religious suppression as well as economic marginalization under Chinese rule.

Beijing has accused Uighur separatists of terrorism in Xinjiang, where ethnic violence has left hundreds of people dead over the past two years.

UN ‘gravely concerned’ over deportation of ethnic Uighurs in Thailand to China

Spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights: Rupert Colville
    Location: Geneva
    10 July 2015

We are gravely concerned by the deportation to China yesterday of 109 people understood to be ethnic Uighurs — including some 20 women — by the Thai authorities. The 109 individuals, who were part of a larger group of more than 350, had been detained in very poor conditions at various immigration detention facilities across Thailand since March 2014, when they were apprehended after leaving China on their way to Turkey. Despite Turkey’s reported willingness to admit them to its territory, only 172 of the 350 were eventually allowed to go to Turkey in late June. Some 60 others remain in detention in Thailand.

The UN Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment has repeatedly expressed concern to the Thai authorities that the deportation of this group to China would amount to refoulement and put them at risk of being tortured or subjected to other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
