At least 18 people are dead after ethnic Uighurs attacked police with knives and bombs at a traffic checkpoint in China’s western Xinjiang region, Radio Free Asia reported on Wednesday.

Armed police responded to the attack and killed 15 suspects “designated as terrorists,” Radio Free Asia cited Memet as saying.

5. Al-Azhar condemns Dutch parliamentarian’s attempted publishing of anti-Islam video
Egypt-based major Islamic Sunni institution Al-Azhar has strongly denounced on Sunday endeavours by the Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders to publish a cartoon that allegedly offends Islam.
Long known for his campaigns against Muslims around the world, including banning the Holy Quran in 2007, Wilders called for the publishing of a cartoon video of the Prophet Muhammad.
Referring to the attempted publishing, Al-Azhar said in an official statement on Sunday: “This is a clear provoking act towards Muslims and goes against the western beliefs of respecting other cultures and views.”

The counter-jihad movement’s lunacy about climate change is truly troubling. In the above video Ezra Klein exhibits some deep misunderstandings:
1. Anthropogenic climate change is as strongly grounded a scientific theory as we have in science.
2. Klein says that climate change is a “theory”, which it is, but the way that he says it, he is using it in the colloquial sense of the term, not the scientific sense. In science “theory” represents our highest level of understanding: the theory of gravitation; the theory of quantum electrodynamics etc. These well-grounded, well-tested domains of knowledge are among the strongest examples of human understanding in existence, and the truth of man-made climate change is among them. But Klein seems to think that “theory” in science is the same as “theory” in the every day sense, as in “my Kennedy assassination theory”. But those are two different things.
3. Most importantly: A proper understanding of man-made climate change, how it is caused by the burning of fossil fuels is essential to the politics of the counter-jihad movement, because the danger of global warming provides a powerful incentive for altering the global energy economy, both technologically and politically, which could include overthrowing the Saudi regime, and shutting off their sources of income. If everyone in America and the West were aware of how dangerous fossil fuel induced global warming is (and the danger is very real), we would be that much more motivated to end the financial bonanza of Arab oil states, which is a major aspect of Islam’s global power. The political Right’s global warming conspiracy theories (for that’s what they are) are there fore in contradiction with the political goals of the counter-jihad movement.
4. On that last point, some clarity is needed: the idea that man-made global warming is a liberal hoax is a delusional conspiracy theory generated by the Right because it has no good answer to the problem (or perhaps because it doesn’t care about the future of humanity). Why is it a problem?
Here’s the deal with conspiracy theories.
Conspiracy theories become widespread and influential in a political culture because they fill a psychological need. Conspiracy theories function as a kind of ideological scapegoat: when your own cherished (dogmatic) beliefs lead you astray, and you aren’t willing to criticize or alter them, you must find something else to blame your problems on. This something else is an imagined conspiracy.
Say you were a far Left wing type in America. If you held, on 9/11/2001 that America was the Evil Empire, that nothing about it was worth defending, and that no other actor in the world could possibly have intentions as evil as the attacks of that day appeared to require, then you had a problem: How to explain evil committed against the United States when the United States is the source of all evil? The solution? The United States attacked itself. Problem solved.
The same logic gave the same result in other parts of the world. If you were an Egyptian Muslim who knew that Islam was a peaceful religion, and that terrorism was only the result of distortion of ‘true’ religion or legitimate political grievances then you had a problem: how to explain the 9/11 attacks when the religion of peace was invoked to justify them by the perpetrators, and the lead hijacker was from Cairo? The solution? The United States, in conjunction with Israel attacked itself, and then blamed it all on Muslims. Problem solved. No need to rethink your basic assumptions.
Once you notice this kind of casuistry, you start seeing it everywhere. The belief among Western conservatives that global warming is a conspiracy by liberal academics and media has the same motivation. Conservatives are committed to free market capitalism as a dogma. The phenomenon of global warming calls into question the benefits of our current global economic regime, particularly the fossil-fuel based energy economy. Conservatives therefore find themselves in a bind: how to maintain their beliefs in a current economic order, which includes the fossil-fuel economy, in the face of the overwhelming evidence of anthropogenic climate change? Their solution? Global warming is a liberal hoax. Problem solved. No need to rethink any basic assumptions.
This kind of mad logic is an ongoing moral and intellectual disaster, and what’s worse, it is fueling the fires of global jihad : WHEN YOU ARGUE AGAINST GLOBAL WARMING, NOT ONLY ARE YOU JUST PLAIN WRONG, YOU ARE CARRYING WATER FOR THE SAUDIS!
There is no issue that atmospheric warming is caused by gasses like methane and carbon dioxide and the increased production of them caused by industry, vehicles and land-waste dumps is having an effect.
What is objected to is the socialists skimming a profit off trading in carbon-tax where the biggest poluters buy off and off-set their problem to not ever need to innovate. They also falsified data. If they had done this with cfc gasses from fridges in the 1970s we’d probably all be unable to go outdoors.

I have not heard of any one government investing in alternative fuels except fracking for their own oil.
