  1. ‘Mind your own business!’ UN official blasted for ordering Britain to take MORE refugees (express, June 15, 2015)
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/584522/Top-UN-official-blasted-Tory-Mps-ordering-Britain-take-more-Mediterranean-refugees-Syria

“BRITAIN should be forced to take in more of the flood of migrants making their way across the Mediterranean, according to a senior UN official.

In a series of controversial remarks Peter Sutherland condemned the UK for not housing its fair share of people fleeing war and turmoil in North Africa and the Middle East.

His comments, which have been attacked by Tory MPs, came on the same day a survey was published showing that four in ten Britons want the Government to shut our borders to refugees completely.

Mr Sutherland, who is the UN secretary-general’s special representative on international migration, said British politicians risk creating a climate of “xenophobia and racism” because they have not done enough to explain the benefits of immigration.

He said: “Migration is something which won’t go away, it is something that we have to constructively engage with and not something that we should fear or that should create xenophobia and racism as it does in many societies around the world.

“The Germans and the Swedes are taking far more per capita than the United Kingdom, and a fair settlement of this issue on the basis of objective criteria – population, GDP, unemployment, whatever issues you think may be appropriate – seems to be a reasonable way of dealing with this.”

However furious Tories rounded on the Irish politician, who is also a chairman of Goldman Sachs International, telling him Britain’s immigration policy is “none of his business”.

Andrew Percy, the MP for Brigg and Goole, raged: “These United Nations people should stop mouthing off about things that are none of their business. They are unelected; they don’t represent anyone and they should stop what seems to be a very anti-British sentiment.

“What is happening in the Mediterranean is incredibly sad, but the only beneficiary of this policy of taking in more migrants would be the people smugglers who profit from this horror.

Andrew Mitchell, the former international development secretary, dismissed his comments and said Britain had contributed more humanitarian support to tackle the migrant process than “practically the whole of the EU.

“We are putting our shoulder to the wheel. Were the Government to start welcoming migration from Syria and some of these very difficult places in Africa, public support for Britain’s development policy would start to evaporate.”

The row comes after a survey by charity Islamic Relief showed that almost half of people think Britain should not take in people fleeing Syria and other Middle Eastern countries.

The charity’s director, Jehangir Malik, said the results show the public’s attitude towards migrants has “hardened” significantly in recent years.

There were chaotic scenes at the French-Italian border at the weekend after hundreds of migrants who had gathered at crossing points were turned away by French riot police.

Refugees were shown huddled in foil blankets on coastal rocks, holding signs – written in English – demanding to be allowed to continue their journey from Italy to northern Europe.

They threatened to hurl themselves into the sea if blocked by the French….”

Chad suicide bomb attack kills many in N’Djamena (BBC, June 15, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-33133511

“At least 23 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in suicide attacks in the Chadian capital N’Djamena, officials say. Attackers on motorcycles blew themselves up outside two police buildings, say witnesses.

A government minister appeared to blame Nigeria’s militant Islamist group Boko Haram in an address on state TV, Reuters news agency reports. The group has not said if it was behind the attack.

Boko Haram had “made a mistake targeting Chad”, and would be “neutralised”, said Communications Minister Hassan Sylla Bakari, quoted by Reuters, adding that four of the attackers had been killed.

Chad has been a key partner in Nigeria’s fight against the militants…..”

  3. France basilica fire: Saint-Donatien in Nantes in ruins (BBC, June 15, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-33134463

“A huge fire has destroyed part of the 19th Century basilica of Saint-Donatien in the French city of Nantes. The blaze broke out on Monday after morning Mass, with worshippers evacuated from the building, Rev Benoit Bertrand told local media. Around 40 firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, which are believed to have originated on the roof where work was being carried out.

Two workers escaped from the top of the building unharmed. The Mayor of Nantes, Johanna Rolland, said the basilica was “an important symbol” for the Catholic community.

In a statement on Facebook (in French) she also thanked firefighters for their “rapid and brave action”. The blaze broke out at around 10:30 local time (08:30 GMT) and may have been linked to “waterproofing work”, according to the city’s chief fire officer.

    • What a discouraging article!

My beloved belated profs are looking on with dismay. We pampering self-indulgent, arrogant ignoramuses and siccing them on their grandchildren. Maybe I’ll take some flowers to their graves and try to apologize for not doing more to stop this betrayal.

      • There is an old saying that if you sow the wind you reap the whirlwind. We in the west are currently reaping tahe whirlwind that was sowed by the left during the 20th Century.

As an example look at the new scandal about the woman who is claiming to be black.

        • Her parents adopted 4 black kids. Something kinda weird going on in that family’s dynamic. Perfectchild could probably explain, but I’d just as soon keep a lid on that bin.

  5. US, militants differ on whether Al Qaeda fighter killed in Libya

US officials said they are still assessing the results of the Saturday strike, but Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steve Warren said the military believes the strike was successful and hit the target. Neither US officials nor the Libyan government provided proof of Belmokhtar’s death, which likely requires a DNA test or an announcement by Belmokhtar’s group that he was killed.

‘‘I can confirm that the target of last night’s counterterrorism strike in Libya was Mokhtar Belmokhtar,’’ Warren said Sunday. ‘‘Belmokhtar has a long history of leading terrorist activities as a member of (Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb), is the operational leader of the Al Qaeda-associated al-Murabitun organization in northwest Africa and maintains his personal allegiance to Al Qaeda.’’

A US official said two F-15 fighter jets launched multiple 500-pound bombs in the attack. The official was not authorized to discuss the details of the attack publicly so spoke on condition of anonymity. Authorities say no US personnel were on the ground for the assault.

But this isn’t the first time authorities have claimed to have killed Belmokhtar, a militant believed to be 43 who reportedly lost his eye in combat and fought in Afghanistan. He was one of a number of Islamist fighters who have battled Algeria’s government since the 1990s, later joining Al Qaeda.

[…]The Islamist, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals in restive Libya, told The Associated Press early Monday that Belmokhtar wasn’t at the site of the US airstrike. He said the strike killed four Ansar Shariah members in Ajdabiya, some 850 kilometers (530 miles) east of the Libyan capital, Tripoli

    • Libyan official: 3 foreigners killed in US airstrikes, not clear if al-Qaida leader among them

CAIRO – The military spokesman of the internationally-recognized Libyan government says three foreigners were among 17 killed in U.S. airstrikes in eastern Libya, adding that it is too early to determine if an al-Qaida-linked militant leader was among them.

Algerian militant Mokhtar Belmokhtar was earlier reported killed by the Libyan government, which is based in the country’s east.

Pentagon officials said the strike successfully hit its target. U.S. Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James confirmed Monday that the target was an al-Qaida-linked leader, but said the results of the raid are still being studied.

Libyan military spokesman Maj. Mohammed Hegazi tells The Associated Press two foreign militant leaders and a Tunisian fighter were killed. He says tests are needed to determine if Belmokhtar is among them.

Libya is split between two rival governments.

  7. Yemeni al Qaeda leader killed in suspected drone strike: CNN

The Yemeni leader of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), Nasser al-Wuhayshi, who was once an associate of Osama bin Laden, was killed in a suspected U.S. drone strike, CNN reported on Monday, citing two Yemeni national security officials.

If confirmed, it would be a major blow to one of the most active branches of the network founded by Osama bin Laden that had claimed the attack on a French satirical magazine and plotted against international airlines.

CNN said the attack occurred on Friday in the Hadramout region in eastern Yemen.

Reuters could not independently confirm the report, but some supporters of the group have published mourning notices on social media.

“Nasser al-Wuhayshi, may God accept him,” one supporter identified as Abu Gandi wrote on Twitter under the hash-tag Martyrdom of Abu Baseer al-Wuhayshi.

The United States was assessing reports of his death, said a U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity and declining to comment on any possible U.S. involvement.

The U.S. military was not involved in any strike, a second official said. It was unclear whether a strike may have been carried out by the Central Intelligence Agency.

Wuhayshi, according to Gregory Johnson, author of a book on AQAP, was born in southern Yemen and traveled to Afghanistan for the first time in 1998 to join al Qaeda.

There, he met bin Laden and acted as his aide-de-camp until 2001, when the group was scattered after the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan following the September 11 attacks on the United States.

He became head of AQAP in 2009, several years after a daring prison break from a jail in Yemen.

The group has orchestrated a number of spectacular attacks inside Yemen in recent years, targeting government ministries, military camps and other institutions in which hundreds of people were killed.

In January, AQAP claimed responsibility for the attack on the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, saying it was ordered in response to insults to the Prophet Mohammed.

In 2013, U.S. sources said that an intercepted communication between Wuhayshi and al Qaeda leader Atman al-Zawahiri – believed to be based in Pakistan – was one component of a broader pool of intelligence that prompted a threat alert closing numerous U.S. embassies in the Middle East and Africa.
