  1. Islamic State militants ‘smuggled to Europe’ (BBC, May 17, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-32770390

“Islamic State (IS) fighters are being smuggled into Europe by gangs in the Mediterranean, an adviser to the Libyan government has told the BBC.

Abdul Basit Haroun said smugglers were hiding IS militants on boats filled with migrants.

Officials in Italy and Egypt have previously warned that IS militants could reach Europe by migrant boat.

However, experts have cautioned that it is very difficult to verify or assess such claims.

Mr Haroun based his claim on conversations with smugglers in parts of North Africa controlled by the militants.

He alleged that IS was allowing the boat owners to continue their operations in exchange for half of their income.

The UN estimates that 60,000 people have already tried to cross the Mediterranean this year…”

    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-32771099

“A bomb has exploded near the entrance of the main airport in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

The suicide attack, which took place close to an airport entrance used by military vehicles, appeared to have been targeting foreign troops, officials said.

Two Afghan teenage girls were killed in the attack, with more casualties feared and at least 18 civilians injured.

Eight women and three children were among the wounded, Kabul police said.

“A suicide bomber detonated his Toyota sedan targeting a foreign forces convoy near Kabul airport today at 09:00,” Kabul police spokesman Ebadullah Karimi told the AFP news agency…”

It was not immediately clear when they were executed though the AFP report on Sunday did say the six men had been sentenced to death by a military tribunal….”

Jordan unemployment soars in areas with high refugee influx (AP, May 17, 2015)
    http://bigstory.ap.org/article/bc47421dcda04d81bb07985b405c437f/jordan-unemployment-soars-areas-high-refugee-influx

“The International Labor Organization says unemployment in areas of Jordan with high concentrations of Syrian refugees rose from 14.5 percent to 22.1 percent between 2011 and 2014.

An ILO study released Sunday looked at three districts that host three-fourths of the 628,000 refugees registered in Jordan.

The official national unemployment rate is 12.9 percent.

Close to 4 million Syrians have fled their country since the start of the conflict in 2011. Most live in neighboring countries.

Tens of thousands of Syrian refugees work in low-paying jobs in Jordan, the vast majority without permits.

The ILO recommends that Jordan and Lebanon, which also struggles with rising unemployment, open jobs shunned by locals and filled by migrant workers to formal employment of refugees. That would include jobs in construction and agriculture.”

  5. Egyptian judges shot dead in Sinai hours after former president Mohamed Morsi sentenced to death (independent, May 17, 2015)

“Three Egyptian judges have been shot dead hours after deposed former president Mohamed Morsi was sentenced to death.

Police said the judges were travelling in a car in the city of al-Arish, Sinai, when it was attacked by suspected Islamist gunmen.

An fourth person was killed and at least three more were injured in the assault.

It is unclear whether the attack was linked to anger over the death sentence passed for Mr Morsi in Cairo but the Egyptian government has blamed Muslim Brotherhood supporters for violence in Sinai in the past….”

  6. A book tour is promoting this book. Which state exactly has passed a law naming the sharia?

“Each movement claims to protect our nation from an existential threat. Each parlays fears of shadowy actors undermining our democracy into populist calls to action. During the period of McCarthyism, more than 13 million Americans—roughly 20 percent of America’s working population—signed loyalty oaths. Today’s anti-Sharia movement—which seeks to demonize Islam, the world’s second largest religion—has succeeded in banning Islamic law in several states. And while movements of political hysteria always claim only to want to rid society of a single, dangerous ideology, its partisans ultimately jeopardize the very values they claim to protect: that we are an open-society committed to the coexistence of many groups and belief systems, a country founded on the principles of freedom and equality for all.”

  8. The Sunday Times : Saudis ‘to get nuclear weapons’

SAUDI ARABIA has taken the “strategic decision” to acquire “off-the-shelf” atomic weapons from Pakistan, risking a new arms race in the Middle East, according to senior American officials.

The move by the Gulf kingdom, which has financed much of Islamabad’s nuclear programme over the past three decades, comes amid growing anger among Sunni Arab states over a deal backed by President Barack Obama, which they fear could allow their arch foe, Shi’ite Iran, to develop a nuclear bomb.

The agreement, which is due to be finalised by the end of next month and involves the permanent members of the UN security council and Germany, is designed to roll back part of Tehran’s nuclear programme in return for an easing of UN sanctions.

There are concerns that Saudi Arabia joining the nuclear club might provoke Turkey and Egypt to follow suit.

  9. Official says Iraq’s ‘Ramadi has fallen’ to Islamic State

A spokesman for the governor of Iraq’s Anbar province says “Ramadi has fallen” to the Islamic State group.

Muhannad Haimour made the comment after the Islamic State group swept through the rest of the city Sunday.

Haimour also says the military’s operational command in the city has been taken as well.

Federal authorities have yet to comment.

Earlier Sunday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi ordered Shiite militias to prepare to go into the Sunni-dominated Anbar province, ignoring worries their presence could spark sectarian bloodshed apparently over fears the extremists could seize the entire province.

  10. SE Asia migrants ‘killed in fight for food’ on boat (BBC, May 17, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-32772333

“Migrants rescued from a sinking boat off Indonesia have told the BBC that about 100 people died after a fight broke out over the last remaining food.

Survivors told of horrific conditions. Three men separately said people were stabbed, hanged or thrown overboard.

The 700 rescued migrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh are being processed by the Indonesian authorities.

Thousands of migrants are estimated to be adrift in South East Asian waters, denied permission to land.

The BBC’s Martin Patience spoke to some of the survivors in the Indonesian port of Langsa, on the island of Aceh. He cautions that their accounts cannot be verified.

However, three migrants made similar statements in separate conversations.

If true, the claims will add to the growing international pressure on Asian countries to find a solution to this crisis, our correspondent says.

The migrants had wanted to land in Malaysia but say they were driven away by the Malaysian navy…”

  11. FBI: Hacker claimed to have taken over flight’s engine controlsFBI: Hacker claimed to have taken over flight’s engine controls (CNN, May 17, 2015)
    http://edition.cnn.com/2015/05/17/us/fbi-hacker-flight-computer-systems/index.html

“A cybersecurity consultant told the FBI he hacked into computer systems aboard airliners up to 20 times and managed to control an aircraft engine during a flight, according to federal court documents.

Chris Roberts was detained by the FBI in April following a United Airlines flight to Syracuse, New York, after officials saw Twitter posts he made discussing hacking into the plane he was traveling on.

An FBI search warrant application filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York describes the investigation of Roberts for possible computer crimes.

During FBI interviews in February and March, the document says, Roberts told investigators he hacked into in-flight entertainment systems aboard aircraft. He claimed to have done so 15 to 20 times from 2011 to 2014.

He also said, according to the document, that once he had hacked into the systems and then overwrote code, enabling him to issue a “CLB,” or climb, command.

“He stated that he thereby caused one of the airplane engines to climb resulting in a lateral or sideways movement of the plane during one of these flights,” the document says.

Roberts said he knew of vulnerabilities aboard three types of Boeing aircraft and one Airbus model. He hacked into in-flight entertainment systems made by Thales and Panasonic, he told agents, according to the document.

Canada’s APTN first reported on the document.

Roberts has said on Twitter that he’s been advised not to say much, but he has tweeted that his only interest is “to improve aircraft security” and accused the FBI of “incorrectly” condensing five years of his research into one paragraph.

    “Lots to untangle,” he tweeted…..”

  12. GERMANY – Thousands protest against PEGIDA march in Stuttgart

Several thousand people in Stuttgart have gathered to protest against the right-wing group PEGIDA’s planned rally. PEGIDA is a movement of people opposed to a perceived “Islamization” of western countries.

[…]The anti-PEGIDA rally in Stuttgart was called by the group “For diversity, against racism,” a conglomerate of many civil society groups, including the Stuttgart church.

[…]Meanwhile, the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination last week expressed its concern “at the proliferation and dissemination of racist ideas by certain political parties and movements” in Germany. […]It also called for a clearer definition of racist discrimination, which would make filing a complaint easier in such cases.
