there is a distinct trail of shells showing that the officer was moving forward towards the terrorists at the rear of the vehicle. He appears to have opened fire from 20 yards away, and fired at least a dozen shots by the time he reached an area near the traffic cones, roughly 7-10 yards from where the terrorists died.

  2. Egypt seizes ‘pro-Muslim Brotherhood’ ex-footballer’s assets
    (BBC, May 8, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-32663102

“The Egyptian authorities have seized assets of former national football star Mohamed Aboutrika, amid allegations that he helped fund banned Islamist movement the Muslim Brotherhood.

The authorities said a court was expected to decide on the issue soon. A defiant Mr Aboutrika said he would stay in Egypt to work for prosperity.

Mr Aboutrika publicly endorsed the successful 2012 presidential bid by Mohamed Morsi, a Brotherhood member. Mr Morsi was ousted by the army in 2013.

An ensuing crackdown on Mr Morsi, Egypt’s first freely-elected leader, and Brotherhood members has left hundreds of people dead and thousands in jail.

The Egyptian authorities said they had seized Mr Aboutrika’s assets – including his shares – in a number of companies.

In response, the 36-year-old former midfielder tweeted: “Confiscate the money or confiscate the money’s owner, I will not leave the country, and I will continue to work for its prosperity.”

If an investigation proves that he has been funding the Muslim Brotherhood the whole case will go to court, the BBC’s Inas Mazhar reports….”

  3. Macedonia – Situation calm after Kosovo terror group in Kumanovo started Firefight with Police

The most dominant ‘information’ is a large group of Kosovo Albanians (70+) had attempted to attack a county building, however were met by police. In an attempt to flee the area, the terrorist group was once again met in the area called “Diva Naselba” where they were defeated. Macedonian policemen were injured in the firefight.

Gunfire, explosions in Macedonia as police pursue ‘armed group’

Explosions and heavy gunfire rocked a town in northern Macedonia on Saturday as police moved against what authorities described as an “armed group”, heightening fears of instability in the ex-Yugoslav republic after months of political crisis.

Medical workers said at least four officers had been seriously wounded after special police units in armoured vehicles launched an operation in a suburb of Kumanovo, some 40 km (25 miles) north of the capital Skopje in an area that saw fighting during an ethnic Albanian insurgency in 2001.

The town was sealed off and 10 hours after the operation began shortly before daybreak a Reuters photographer reported hearing intense automatic gunfire and two loud explosions.

Helicopters circled the ethnically-mixed region of some 100,000 people and an interior ministry spokesman said he had information on “casualties” but refused to say how many.

The events are likely to deepen concern in the West over stability in Macedonia, where the government is on the ropes over allegations by the main opposition, the Social Democrats, of illegal wire-tapping and widespread abuse of office.

The opposition has begun small but daily protests demanding the resignation of conservative Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, and is threatening to rally thousands on May 17.

Observers fear political leaders on either side may try to stoke ethnic tensions as leverage.

Interior ministry spokesman Ivo Kotevski said that police had acted “on previously received information about an armed group”. He told a press conference the gunmen were planning “terrorist acts” and had “infiltrated” the country from a neighbouring state, without saying which.

[…]An estimated 30 percent of Macedonia’s 2 million people are ethnic Albanians. Guerrillas took up arms in 2001, clashing with security forces before the West brokered a peace deal offering the Albanian minority greater rights and representation and the insurgents entered government.

But implementation has been slow and tensions sometimes flare. Many in Macedonia, regardless of ethnicity, are frustrated at the glacial pace of development and integration with the West, with the country’s bid to join the European Union and NATO blocked by a long-running dispute with Greece over the country’s name.

  5. IRAQ – ‘Dozens dead’ and many escape in Iraq prison break

At least 30 prisoners and 10 guards have been killed in a prison break in Iraq, as more than 50 other inmates escaped, officials and police say.

The Islamic State (IS) militant group says it was behind the attack on the jail in Khalis, north-east of Baghdad.

But officials blame the incident on a prison riot in which inmates tried to seize weapons and managed to break out.

Iraq has seen a number of prison breaks. Many have been caused by militants seeking to free comrades.

Nine of the inmates who got away in the latest incident were being held on terrorism charges, including IS members. The rest, officials said, were common criminals.
    Conflicting reports

Police officials said the trouble began when prisoners started fighting, and guards who intervened were attacked and had their weapons seized. The ministry said there had been no external assault.

A security official told the BBC that some of the prisoners had planned the escape.

But the militant group has said it was behind the attack and managed to free “more than 30” fighters from the prison in a statement posted online.

“Fifteen IEDs (improvised explosive devices) were detonated against army and police convoys and vehicles around the prison,” the statement added.

Some local sources also reported Islamic State militants using several vehicles to try to storm the prison and release its members inside.

The town of Khalis is located in Diyala province about 80km (50 miles) north of Baghdad.

  8. Saudi Coalition Airstrikes Hit Rebel Stronghold in Yemen (abcnews, May 9, 2015)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/saudi-coalition-airstrikes-hit-rebel-stronghold-yemen-30928509

“Dozens of Saudi-led coalition airstrikes hit the rebel stronghold Saada in northern Yemen, forcing hundreds of families to flee the area, security officials and Shiite Houthi rebels said Saturday.

The raids come after the Saudi-led coalition ordered civilians in rebel strongholds to flee by nightfall Friday and declared the entire region a “military target.” It warned it will strike anything in the region, even as the Saudis pressed for a ceasefire to begin next week.

Saudi Brig. Gen. Ahmed Ali Asiri, the coalition spokesman, said in a televised press conference that the strikes have targeted multiple buildings belonging to Houthi leadership, weapons stores and rebel encampments in the region bordering Saudi Arabia.

He accused the Houthis of preventing area residents from leaving the area under fire. Several tribal officials said the Houthis were making it difficult for residents to leave by removing petrol from the market and using it instead for their war effort.

Houthi spokesman Hamed al-Bokheiti denied the accusation, and said that on the contrary, the Houthis opened camps in Yemen’s capital Sanaa to receive refugees and those who remain in Saada are people who refused to leave….”
