An EPA OIG investigation found that Peter Jutro, the former Acting Associate Administrator for the EPA Office of Homeland Security (OHS) engaged in a pattern of “conduct and exchanges, including some of a sexual nature considered to be unwelcome” by sixteen female EPA employees. 2. Kansas fraternity expels 4 members for mocking Muslims

A fraternity at the University of Kansas has kicked out four members who admitted involvement in a video posted on social media that mocks Muslims.

Zeta Beta Tau chapter president Jason Finkelstein said Wednesday that the traditionally Jewish fraternity learned of the video April 10 and expelled the members the next day. He said it appears the clip was posted April 9 via the app Yeti.

In a written statement first released over the weekend to the Lawrence school’s student newspaper, the University Daily Kansan, and released Wednesday to The Associated Press, the fraternity said it takes a “strong stance against bigotry and intolerance in all forms.”

The student paper obtained the clip, which shows a man wrapped in a blanket with his face and head covered. He can be heard saying “Allahu akbar,” Arabic for “God is great” as others laugh.

The fraternity statement said the members admitted their involvement, leading the organization to invoke a “strict zero-tolerance policy” regarding racism, discrimination and prejudice.

“As an organization, we are ready and willing to take any further action necessary to ensure that those affected feel they are valued and appreciated in our community,” the statement said. “The brothers of Zeta Beta Tau Epsilon Mu Chapter regret the actions that took place and hope that we can use this as a stepping stone to start a positive conversation that promotes diversity.”

Laurence Bolotin, the executive director at the fraternity’s headquarters in Indianapolis, said in an email that the organization supported the “swift actions” of the chapter to expel the members.

Erinn Barcomb-Peterson, a university spokeswoman, said the matter was resolved because the chapter removed the students.

  4. German police seize explosives in anti-terror raid (BBC, Apr 30, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-32538425

“Police in Germany believe they have foiled an alleged terror plot near Frankfurt. Officers raided a flat in the town of Oberursel and reportedly found a pipe bomb, an assault rifle and bomb-making chemicals.

Police confirmed that a man and a woman had been detained overnight.

Local media said the couple have been under surveillance since one of them bought a large quantity of hydrogen peroxide using a fake name.

“This hydrogen peroxide triggered an alert,” Frankfurt’s deputy chief prosecutor Stefan Rojczyk told the Associated Press news agency.

“Police figured out who had bought it and it was decided to act fast,” he said.

The BBC’s Jenny Hill in Berlin says that hydrogen peroxide is often used to make explosives.

Peter Beuth, the Hesse state interior minister, said that the arrests had foiled a possible terrorist attack and that the two suspects were thought to have links to Islamist extremists, the DPA news agency reported.

But Mr Rojczk told AP that he could not confirm whether the couple were connected to Islamist militants…”

    • Various explosives, weapons found in terror arrest near Frankfurt (DW, Apr 30, 2015)
      http://www.dw.de/various-explosives-weapons-found-in-terror-arrest-near-frankfurt/a-18422144

“The western state of Hesse’s top public prosecutor, Albrecht Schreiber, told reporters in Wiesbaden on Thursday that an array of dangerous items were seized from a couple’s apartment overnight; the two suspects were arrested on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack.

Schreiber confirmed the discovery of a completed pipe bomb, police found three liters of hydrogen peroxide, 100 rounds of live 9-milimeter munitions, a training projectile for a rocket-propelled grenade, methylated spirits, diesel, other “unknown fluids,” and also “meaningful parts of a G3 assault rifle.”

The rifle was disassembled, Schreiber said, and police were working to ascertain whether the complete set of parts was present in the flat in Oberursel, near Frankfurt.

The overnight arrest of a 35-year-old German with Turkish roots and his 34-year-old wife is believed to have prevented a terrorist attack in the region. Friday’s cycling race around Frankfurt had been identified as a potential target in the press; police president Stefan Müller said investigators had not ruled out the possibility, but did not yet know.

“That is, of course, a soft target, it would be relatively easy to attack,” Müller said. “And since the Boston Marathon [attack of 2013], such events are closely watched – which also applies to cycling races.”

Schreiber explained that the male suspect was seen in recent days surveying parts of the route of the cycling race, around Germany’s financial capital on the Mayday public holiday. This intensified police attention on him….”

  5. Yemen crisis: Saudi Arabia stops Houthi ‘border attack’ (BBC, Apr 30, 2015)

“Saudi troops have repelled a major attack on their border by Houthi rebels from Yemen, Saudi state media says.

Air strikes carried out by a Saudi-led coalition have targeted the Shia Muslim rebels since late March.

But this is the first major assault on Saudi territory since the strikes began. The Saudi reports say “dozens” of rebels were killed.

As fighting continues, aid groups say a lack of fuel is severely hampering their operations in Yemen….”

  6. Boko Haram crisis: Nigerian army ‘frees more captives’ (BBC, Apr 30, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-32530713

“Nigeria’s military says it has freed another sizeable group of people during its offensive against Boko Haram militants in the vast Sambisa forest.

One woman died and eight others were wounded as nine camps belonging to the Islamist insurgents were destroyed, army spokesman Col Sanu Usman said.

He told the BBC at least 100 men and boys were among more than 160 people rescued in operations on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, the army said it had freed nearly 300 women and children.
The girls abducted from a school in Chibok in April 2014 were not among them…”
