      • “Hasbara” ? I glean it’s “explaining and advocating for Israel”?
I really like how directly they write without the currency of our time: euphemisms.

  1. Southern Philippines? Sounds like some Mahoundians are more likely involved in this kind of scheme than not.

Gunmen Abduct Mayor of Southern Philippine Town (abcnews, Apr 7, 2015)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/gunmen-abduct-mayor-southern-philippine-town-30130629

“Armed men have abducted the mayor of a southern Philippine town from her house and fled with her on motorboats, officials said Tuesday.

Five armed men kidnapped Mayor Gemma Adana of Naga, a coastal town in the southern province of Zamboanga Sibugay, from her house while she was with friends late Monday, Interior Secretary Mar Roxas said.

Roxas condemned the abduction and said a manhunt was underway. A provincial crisis committee has been convened.

Naga police officer Wilprim Timsan says the unidentified abductors have so far not communicated with Adana’s family nor made any ransom demand.

Abu Sayyaf militants, kidnap gangs and other criminal groups operate in the province. Police said five men barged into the mayor’s house while a sixth, who operated their boat, waited.

The military said the kidnappers headed toward the mountainous Kaliantana Island, which is part of the Naga municipality, where three children abducted late March from nearby Zamboanga del Sur province also were taken. It is uncertain whether the children’s kidnappers were also involved in the kidnapping of the mayor.”

  2. Report: Gunmen Kill 8 Iranian Guards Near Pakistan Border (abcnews, Apr 7, 2015)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/report-gunmen-kill-iranian-guards-pakistan-border-30130986

“Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency says gunmen have killed eight Iranian border guards in the country’s volatile southeast, near the border with Pakistan.

The report says the attack took place on Monday in the restive Sistan-Baluchistan province. Fars says four of the killed soldiers were conscripts.

The area has been scene of occasional clashes between Iranian forces and militant groups believed to be affiliated with al-Qaida.

It was the second reported incident in a day in Sistan-Baluchistan near the Pakistani border.

Earlier Monday, Iran’s official IRNA news said Revolutionary Guard units broke up a militant group linked to a “foreign intelligence” agency, killed three of its members and detained several. IRNA also said Guard forces confiscated a large amount of weapons and communication equipment from the militant group.

  3. Online Chatter After NYC Terror Arrests: ‘Delete Her From Your Phone’ (abcnews, Apr 7, 2015)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/online-chatter-nyc-terror-arrests-delete-phone/story?id=30124247

“A New York woman arrested on terror charges was big news in the chat rooms of the online pro-jihad community, where female ISIS sympathizers warned each other to sever their own ties with the suspect, as evidenced by this exchange of messages obtained by ABC News:

“Hey did you hear sis got picked up by the kufar [unbelievers],” one message says.
    “Which sis?” another responds.

“Sis Amtu Shaheed,” the first says.

“Subhanallah [Praise God] not her,” a third person says.

“Uh huh delete her from you[r] phone,” the first says.

The message are referring to Noelle “Amtu Shahid,” also known as Noelle Valentzas, an accused ISIS and al Qaeda sympathizer and Brooklyn mother arrested last week, along with another New York woman, for allegedly conspiring to carry out a terror attack in New York City….”

  4. DHS Admits: 40 American ISIS Thugs Have RETURNED to the United States

Department of Homeland Security secretary Jeh Johnson says dozens of Americans who traveled overseas to train with ISIS militants are now back in the United States.

“As I understand it, of the 180 Americans who have gone overseas to fight in Iraq and Syria, 40 have come back,” said 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl.

“I assume you’re keeping close tabs on those 40?” she asked Johnson.

“We have in fact kept close tabs on those who we believe have left and those who’ve come back,” Johnson responded. “A number have been arrested or investigated and we have systems in place to track these individuals. But you can’t know everything.”

“We are separated from the hot spots by an ocean, which does make it more difficult,” Johnson said.

Ironically enough, while Jeh Johnson says the government “can’t know everything” about home grown terrorists, it knew the Tsarnaev brothers, the Boston bombers, were accepting tens of thousands of dollars worth of welfare benefits and did nothing to stop their deadly plot.

And the Russians warned U.S. security officials about the Tsarnaev brothers long before they blew people up.

“So do you think if it were easier for these kids to get there, there would be more of them going?” Lesley Stahl asked.

“Probably,” Johnson said. “And so border security is not simply preventing people from getting in, but very often preventing somebody from leaving for the wrong reasons.”

  5. CNN – Wolf Blitzer asks Adel Al-Jubeir, the Saudi Ambassador to the U.S., about reports they are trying to get nuclear bombs from Pakistan.

  6. Those interested in the history of early Islam, the history of the study of early Islam, and the current state of such study at Oxford and SOAS, might find this talk with the informed and articulate Ian D. Morris interesting.

Interesting from another perspective is left-leaning Morris’s contempt for the ‘nutjob’ Robert Spencer, coming as it does directly on the heels of a description of troubles in the humanities generally, and Islamic studies specifically (about 1:07:00 forward) not any different in essence from an account of such problems that Spencer himself might give. Briefly:

    1. ‘Marketization’ and the waste of talented academics who could be doing original research but instead are stuck teaching pointless courses to overcharged undergraduate zombies;

    2. Muslim professors, and the non-Muslim professors allied with them, writing what amounts to propaganda for Islam and using their positions to get away with presenting it as disinterested scholarship;

    3. Money from Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Muslim world funding institutes and scholars to do research ‘not of good quality’ that ‘contributes to the conservatism of our field,’ which, because it is ‘politically and religiously charged,’ moves at a slower pace than other fields anyhow.

Then Morris says that money for the humanities is drying up and there should be increased state support to prevent funding being taken over by nutjobs like Robert Spencer. No keeping it secret from the smart boys at SOAS how massively well-funded the counterjihad/Islamophobia industry is.

  7. Homeland Security Dept.: Terrorism not suspected in DC outage

A power outage reportedly affected much of Washington D.C. on Tuesday, including White House and the State Department facilities.

Pepco, the D.C. electric services provider, said it had scattered reports of outages for “unknown” reasons, and that it was looking into the matter. The utility said in a 1:35 p.m. ET update that it had recorded 129 active outages and 2,179 affected customers (which include buildings and office spaces).

Some metro stations in Washington were running on emergency lighting, according to the city’s transportation authority. Several area museums were affected by the outage. The National Portrait Gallery, the Air and Space Museum and others were evacuated, the Smithsonian Institution said in a tweet.

Department of Homeland Security officials said they were looking into the outage, but believed at this time that there is no reason to believe the power failure has any connection to terrorism or other criminal activity.

Officials pointed to an explosion at a southern Maryland facility as the likely cause of the regional electricity issue.

  8. UK – LONDON –Syrian Imam Sheihk Abdul Hadi Arwani ‘shot dead in London’

Police have launched a murder investigation after a man believed to have been a Syrian preacher was found with gunshot wounds in a car in north-West London today.

The Metropolitan Police have not yet formally identified the man who is in his 40s, but he has been named by local press as Imam Abdul Hadi Arwani. The man’s family have been alerted, according to police.

Mr Arwani was formerly an imam at the An-noor Masjid mosque in Acton, west London,

Police sources said it was possible that a feud at the mosque had turned violent.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/syrian-imam-sheihk-abdul-hadi-arwani-shot-dead-in-london-10161058.html

The mosque has previously hosted the son of radical preacher Abu Hamza, and was the location for the November 2013 escape of terror suspect Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed, who dressed himself in a burka.

A police source said the mosque had attracted a number of former criminals who have turned to Islam and it was possible that a feud at the mosque had turned violent.

The An-Noor Mosque has hosted fundamentalist speakers including Murtaza Khan, Shakeel Begg and Haitham Haddad.
