  1. Motorcycle gunmen kill Ugandan prosecutor (CNN, Apr 1, 2015)
    http://edition.cnn.com/2015/03/31/world/uganda-prosecutor-death/index.html

“Gunmen on a motorcycle have shot and killed Uganda’s lead prosecutor in the 2010 bombings that killed 76 people who were watching the World Cup finals.

Joan Kagezi stopped at a roadside produce stand in a Kampala suburb Monday evening to buy some fruit when her assailants approached, according to police.

“Criminals riding on a motorcycle … stopped next to the parked car she was driving and shot her twice in the neck and shoulder through the window on the driver’s side,” Kale Kayihura, the inspector general of police, said Tuesday. Kagezi was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Kagezi was the lead prosecutor in the case of 13 terror suspects now before the High Court in Kampala. The blasts erupted in an Ethiopian restaurant and a rugby center while crowds watched the World Cup finals on TV. Spain defeated the Netherlands 1-0 in the 2010 championship hosted by South Africa.

Kagezi also was in charge of the nation’s International Crime Division.

Kayihura called her death a big loss for the country and promised to hunt for her killers.

“The murder of Joan Kagezi should only serve to increase our resolve to hunt down and bring to justice all those elements bent on disturbing the security and development of our country,” Kayihura said.”

  2. Thailand: Constitution Drafting Committee passes gender rule for parties

    http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/politics/513987/cdc-passes-gender-rule-for-parties

At least a third of every political party’s list candidates must be women in order to qualify for national polls, under a proposal backed Tuesday by constitution drafters to promote gender equality in politics.

In a secret session, the Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) voted 17 to 13, with two abstentions, to approve the 1-in-3 gender proportion proposal.

…Only women who were born female will be considered female under the law, as it does not yet include transgender people, [the spokeswoman] said. This may change in the future, she added….

    • Rita a few weeks back I told you the wrong spelling for Ban Shide pronounced ban shee, it is Gallic for female elf.

    • Elliott Abrams is on Our Side.
Feel like gossip? -.-.-.- Rita? Richard?
      -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
Elliott’s youthful indiscretions tarnished him a bit, but he’s highly qualified, 100% Likud, Bibi, et al.

His promising career in diplomacy (Republican) got off-track, but may be resumed at some point when the wind changes. Meanwhile he shelters under the generous wing of Sheldon Adelson, the most lovable, unlikely, gambling-casino billionaire who became a sort of Godfather to Bibi.

Unlikely because Bibi’s dad was Ben-Zion Netanyahu, one of the world’s most eminent scholars of the Spanish Inquisition. (Small world! Though they’re Ashkenazi Jews.) Very august, scholarly gentleman who served as Ze’ev Jabotinsky’s personal secretary way back when. Awesome soldier.

Ben-Zion’s passing has been a heavy loss for Bibi; his wise counsel is missed by many more. (Ben-Zion stopped speaking to his son for a while after some ill-advised concessions to the Arab enemy.)

  6. Egypt’s Al-Azhar files complaint accusing TV show of twisting Islam

Egypt’s pre-eminent Sunni Islamic institute Al-Azhar took a swipe on Wednesday at TV presenter Islam El-Behery’s show for what it described as a fierce and elusive campaign against the foundations of Islam and Islamic legacy.

El-Behery, an Islamic researcher, has been providing his understanding of Islamic doctrine on his TV show and has stirred controversy for questioning the credibility of the sources of Prophet Muhammed’s sayings [ the hadiths ], a prime reference for Islamic teachings next to the koran.

Al-Azhar filed a complaint to the General Body for Investment and Free Zones requesting for TV channels not to air El-Behery’s show, also saying it has known that the authority planned to send a warning to Al Qahera Wal Nas, the channel which airs his show.

El-Behery’s show, the Al Azhar statement says, deliberately makes people question what is certain in religion and that it threatens social peace. Al-Azhar also accused the show of stirring sectarian strife.

Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has more than once called on Al-Azhar to fight what he labeled as faulty Islamic teachings and extremism, amid a crackdown against Islamists across the nation following the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

  9. NETHERLANDS – Justice official reassigned after “ISIS is a Zionist plot” tweet

Yasmina Haifi has been conditionally discharged after her tweet that stated that ISIS is a Zionist plot to give Islam a bad name. The conditional discharge means that Haifi may continue to work for the Ministry of Security and Justice, but will be immediately dismissed if she puts another foot wrong.

Minister Ard van der Steur informed the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of parliament, about this decision in a letter Tuesday. Haifi will not be returning to her old post at the National Cyber Security Center, from which she was suspended after posting the controversial tweet, Omroep West reports. It is not yet clear where she will work from now on.

The Advisory Committee for Fundamental Rights and Job Performance of Officials (AGFA) determined that the controversial tweet can be classified as a “dereliction of duty”, and advised the minister to give Haifi a written reprimand. But Van der Steur decided that a written reprimand is not severe enough. “Given the seriousness of the dereliction of duty and the function of the official, I believe that the punishment of a written reprimand is not appropriate. I decided to impose the disciplinary punishment of conditional discharge on the official.” He wrote in his letter to the Tweede Kamer.

Haifi’s controversial tweet caused quite a stir in political circles. The commotion surrounding the tweet lead Haifi to the decision to resign as a member of the PvdA. Two days after the tweet was posted Ivo Opstelten, the then Minister of Security and Justice, and Deputy Prime Minister Lodewijk Asscher expressed their shock and disgust over the tweet, Opstelten stating that a dismissal was not out of the question. Last month AGFA came to the conclusion that the tweet was not enough to fire Haifi and that the statements made by Asscher and Opstelten were premature and “disturbed” the labor relations.

The Islamic State Destroys U.S. Chickens Amid Food Crisis

Amid the humanitarian catastrophe of Syria’s civil war, some 9.8 million people require food assistance, according to U.N. estimates. Nonetheless, the Islamic State crowed on social media that it had set fire to boxes of chicken that had been “slaughtered unlawfully,” according to the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors online jihadi activity. The boxes bear the logo of Illinois-based Koch Foods, and according to their labels, the chicken was halal.
