1. Dr. Zuhdi Jasser: How to Win the New Cold War Against Muslim Theocracy

(Neurotics build castles in the sky. Psychotics live in them. Psychiatrists collect the rent and Dr. Zuhdi Jasser sells time shares for them. The Islamic State, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Iran, Yemen, and every other muslim country are theocracies to degrees and cite chapter and verse of islamic scripture for their laws and government. Zuhdi is dreaming in technicolor when he says there is a real islam which is genuinely representative while every muslim country somehow does not. At least his vision and desires are good ones, but pretending the problem is not islam and making a false dichotomy aids the enemy. Not those who created the values he claims, and I believe sincerely wants.)

4. UK: The police stations that are appallingly easy to break into: Undercover officers expose glaring security weaknesses at a string of bases

The squad claimed a 100 per cent ‘success rate’ for breaking and entering at least six police buildings.

They were able to get inside supposedly secure premises by ‘tailgating’ – following authorised staff through security doors – climbing fences and even fraudulently claiming to be legitimate visitors.

Once inside, to prove they had accomplished their mission they stole uniforms, valuable equipment and restricted paperwork, and posed for photos in highly restricted areas.

(Add the two stories above to the story about France and the stolen uniforms and ID, item 4 here,  for security personnel and one senses a pattern)

  1. Deadly bomb attacks hit Egypt’s Sinai peninsula (BBC, March 10, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-31811235

“Bomb attacks targeting the police and army in Egypt’s restive Sinai peninsula have killed two people and wounded more than 30, officials say.

A suicide bomber targeted a police compound in the city of El-Arish, leaving a civilian driver dead.

A roadside bomb later exploded beside an armoured vehicle, killing a soldier.

Sinai Province, a jihadist group affiliated to Islamic State, claimed it was behind the first attack, the al-Yawm al-Sabaa newspaper reported.

Militants based in the Sinai have killed hundreds of soldiers and police since the military overthrew Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in 2013….”

  2. Pakistan ends death penalty suspension after seven years (BBC, March 10, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-31812177

“Pakistan is to resume executions for all death penalty offences, months after a moratorium was partially lifted to allow executions of terror convicts.

All condemned prisoners who have exhausted the appeals process and whose pleas for clemency are rejected now face execution, officials say.

Executions were suspended for seven years until some resumed after the Peshawar school massacre in December.

More than 8,000 people are on death row in Pakistan, human rights groups say.

About 1,000 have lost their appeals and had clemency petitions rejected, a senior official quoted by AFP news agency said.

The BBC’s M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad says it is not clear why the moratorium has been lifted at this time….”

  3. Iraq troops ‘retake parts of Tikrit’ from Islamic State (BBC, March 10, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-31822701

“Iraqi forces have retaken some areas of the city of Tikrit from Islamic State (IS) militants, Iraqi officials say.

They say IS has rigged explosives across the city to stop the advance.

The government troops – backed by Shia militias – earlier claimed to have captured the town of al-Alam, on the northern perimeter of Tikrit.

The offensive in Tikrit – which has been under IS control since last summer – is so far the biggest government operation against the jihadists.

The militants still control large swathes of Syria and Iraq – including the country’s second-biggest city, Mosul….”

  4. Stunned France probes deadly Argentina helicopter crash (BBC, March 10, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-31819952

“Prosecutors in France have opened a manslaughter investigation after two helicopters crashed in Argentina, killing eight French nationals.

Three well-known French sports personalities were among those killed in the collision, which also claimed the lives of the two Argentine pilots.

French President Francois Hollande said it was “a cause of immense sadness”.

Both helicopters were involved in the filming of TV survival show Dropped, which airs on French channel TF1.

On the show, celebrities are flown into rough terrain and filmed while they attempt to find food and shelter.

Yachtswoman Florence Arthaud, Olympic swimmer Camille Muffat and Olympic boxer Alexis Vastine were the show’s celebrities on board at the time of the crash. They all died.

Other contestants were standing on the ground blindfolded a few hundred metres away when the accident happened near Villa Castelli in La Rioja province, French media said.

Reports in Argentina said French swimmer Alain Bernard, who was also taking part in the show, narrowly escaped the crash after getting off one of the helicopters at the last minute to avoid overloading it.

The five other French nationals killed were said to have worked for Adventure Line Productions (ALP), the company making the programme. They were named as Laurent Sbasnik, Lucie Mei-Dalby, Volodia Guinard, Brice Guilbert and Edouard Gilles.

The Argentine pilots were named as Juan Carlos Castillo and Roberto Abate.”

  5. Terror ‘apologists’ must share blame – Hammond (BBC, March 10, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-31809453

“”Apologists” for those who commit acts of terrorism are partly responsible for the violence, Philip Hammond has said.

Security services have been criticised over their handling of Mohammed Emwazi – known as “Jihadi John”….

In another development due later, MPs are expected to approve new travel restrictions for people the government believes pose a “terrorism-related threat”.

The motion will also introduce fines for airlines which breach a series of requirements set up to “prevent certain individuals from travelling to or from the UK”.

In the speech at the Royal United Services Institute (Rusi) in London, Mr Hammond said ministers must act “decisively” in debates about powers given to the security services so they can “get on” with keeping the UK safe…”

  6. Chad shutdown over deadly helmet protests (BBC, March 10, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-31815807

“Chadian authorities have closed all schools and universities after deadly protests over new regulations requiring motorbike riders to wear a helmet.

At least three people were killed over several days of student-led protests.

Motorbikes are a popular form of transport in Chad, and are frequently used as taxis.

Many people oppose the new safety regulation, arguing that helmets are too expensive, as well as too hot for the climate.

Helmet prices have tripled since the new regulation was introduced earlier this month.”

  7. Afghanistan: Probe into rare Kabul mosque shooting (BBC, March 10, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-31822731

“Police in Afghanistan are investigating a shooting at a mosque in Kabul which left 11 people dead.

Four or five gunmen entered the Sufi minority mosque during evening prayers. After initially opening fire, they held each of the victims down and shot them in the head.

Only one man survived the attack, which happened on Saturday, by lying under the bodies while injured.

Violent attacks on mosques in Afghanistan are very rare.

The survivor said the killers shouted “Kill them all. Do not leave any alive.”

He said the gunmen spoke in Pashtu – the minority language in Afghanistan, spoken in the south and east of the country.

Those who died followed a traditional Afghan Sufi strand of Islam which is hated by the Taliban, and also by fundamentalists from other mujahideen groups…”

  8. Officials Say Bombings Across Afghanistan Kill at Least 13 (abcnews, March 10, 2015
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/official-suicide-car-bomber-kills-afghanistan-29526615

“A series of bombings across Afghanistan, including one targeting a police checkpoint in the country’s south, killed at least 13 people Tuesday, authorities said.

The day’s deadliest attack targeted the checkpoint on the outskirts of Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province, killing eight people and wounding 23, said Omar Zwak, the spokesman for the provincial governor. The dead included six civilians and two police officers, he said.

Alam Yar, a doctor at a hospital in Lashkar Gah, said 20 wounded people and four dead bodies had been brought there.

A separate roadside bombing killed four people and wounded five, police said.

Afghanistan’s army has been fighting to clear large parts of Helmand of Taliban militants. The insurgents have retaliated in recent days with a series of suicide attacks in towns and villages across the province.

In Baghlan province in northern Afghanistan, another bomb exploded near a hospital, killing one civilian and wounding 16, a senior police official said. The official said that the target of the bomb in the provincial capital, Puli Khumri, was a police vehicle, though no police officer was wounded.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity as he wasn’t authorized to speak to journalists….”

  9. Yahoo – Stephen Harper says niqab comes from an ‘anti-women’ culture

The prime minister denounced the face-covering niqab in question period Tuesday. But Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau says his question was about the hijab headscarf, and accused the Tories of conflating issues to create “ignorance.”

Globe & Mail – Niqabs ‘rooted in a culture that is anti-women,’ Harper says

[…]“We do not allow people to cover their faces during citizenship ceremonies. Why would Canadians, contrary to our own values, embrace a practice at that time that is not transparent, that is not open and frankly is rooted in a culture that is anti-women,” Mr. Harper told the Commons Tuesday. “That is unacceptable to Canadians, unacceptable to Canadian women.”

  10. 1/ Exactly. Zuhdi can be as well-intentioned as humanly possible, and all it amounts to is muddying the waters and posting a Safe for Swimming sign when the river is thick with piranhas, or telling people that half the piranhas are actually goldfish and on their side in this. The ‘Center for American Progress’ (‘Progressive Ideas for a Strong, Free and Just America’) just slammed Zuhdi for being a hater and an Islamophobe in their ‘Fear Inc. 2.0’ report on the ‘Islamophobia Network’s Efforts to Manufacture Hate in America.’ They have very well-funded contempt for him:

    https://www.americanprogress.org/about/c3-our-supporters/

The other side despises Zuhdi, and he does ours no good. It only makes it worse that he very much seems to be a nice guy.
