1. Muslim Holidays Are Now NYC Public School Holidays

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced this morning that the Muslim holidays of Eid al-Adha and al-Fitr have been added to the NYC public school schedule, calling it “a change that respects the diversity of our city.”

During the Bloomberg administration, the City Council approved adding the holidays, but Mayor Bloomberg was against the measure, saying in 2008, “The truth of the matter is we need more children in school. More, not less,” and “When you have a city as diverse as we do, with virtually every religion known to man practiced, if we closed school for every single day there wouldn’t be any school.”

2. A story about a killing of a 7 year old daughter by the mother and her lesbian lover too weird for words.

(While this may not have anything to do with the usual islamic motives for killing children, or perhaps it does, the lack of taboo on killing children likely goes a long way to making something like this more likely. More here and here)

3. Pakistani man guilty in al-Qaida plot to attack NYC subway

NEW YORK (AP) — A Pakistani man was found guilty Wednesday in a failed al-Qaida bomb plot after a New York trial that featured spies in disguise, evidence from the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound and the defendant’s questioning of an admitted co-conspirator.

The jury reached the verdict in federal court in Brooklyn after beginning deliberations Tuesday morning. No date was set for sentencing.

Abid Naseer was first arrested in 2009 in Great Britain on charges he was part of a terror cell plotting to blow up a shopping mall in Manchester, England. The charges were dropped after a British court found there wasn’t enough evidence, but U.S. prosecutors later named him in an indictment that alleged a broader conspiracy that included a failed plot to attack the New York City subway.

5. House committee to subpoena e-mails from Clinton’s personal account

A House investigative committee is preparing to send out subpoenas later Wednesday to gather a deeper look into former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton’s nearly exclusive use of personal e-mails to do her official business as the government’s top diplomat, according to people familiar with the probe.

The House Select Committee on Benghazi, which first discovered Clinton’s use of a personal e-mail based on a home server in its inquiry into a fatal 2012 terrorist attack on a U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, is asking for all e-mails related to the attack from all Clintonemail.com accounts and any other staff members’ personal accounts.

  1. Iran Foreign Minister: We Believe We Are ‘Very Close’ to Nuke Deal

[…]”Iran is not about building nuclear weapons,” Zarif said in an exclusive interview with Ann Curry Wednesday.

¨[…]”We are prepared to work round the clock in order to reach an agreement. We believe that we are very close, very close and we could be very far.” He said “there are details that need to be worked out.”

“We are very close if the political decision can be made to get to yes, as President Obama said,” he said.[…]

  2. CANADA – RCMP to show Zehaf-Bibeau video on Friday

[…]On Wednesday morning, the committee released a notice for the meeting which said it would receive a “briefing by the Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to publicly display and discuss the video made by the individual who committed barbaric terrorist acts in Ottawa on Wednesday, October 22, 2014.”

However, within about 30 minutes, the committee abruptly changed the wording of that notice to tone down its language, remove the word “barbaric”, and simply say that Paulson would deliver a briefing “on a video” made by the person who “committed terrorists acts” on Oct 22, 2014.

The committee’s clerk, Leif-Erik Aune, said the wording change was made for merely “stylistic” reasons, and “nothing more than that.”

“We had a talk internally, I’m not going to get into the details, but ultimately the language was made shorter just for ease of reading.”

[…]The video may answer some questions about Zehaf-Bibeau, including his motives, whether he acted alone, and whether he had connections to known terrorist groups.

  3. USA – Imam Who Said Ayaana Hirsi Ali Deserved Death Penalty Was Hired By DOJ To Teach Muslim Classes To Federal Prisoners

An Egyptian-born imam who in 2007 said that Somali-born activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali should receive the death penalty for her criticism of Islam is now a Department of Justice contractor hired to teach classes to Muslims who are in federal prison.

According to federal spending records, Fouad ElBayly, the imam at Islamic Center of Johnstown in Pennsylvania, was contracted by the DOJ’s Bureau of Prisons beginning last year to teach the classes to Muslim inmates at Cumberland Federal Correctional Institution in Cumberland, Md.

The records show that ElBayly has two contracts worth $12,900 to teach the classes and to provide the inmates “leadership and guidance.” One of the contracts is dated Feb. 20, 2014, and the other is dated Dec. 8, 2014.

[…]“If you come into the faith, you must abide by the laws, and when you decide to defame it deliberately, the sentence is death,” the imam told a local newspaper ahead of her university visit.

[…]Perhaps the highest hurdle for ElBayly to clear would be the program’s requirement to affirm, ”I do not endorse nor will I practice or use language in the institution that will support violence, terrorism, discrimination against other inmates.”

The Daily Caller sought to interview ElBayly, but he didn’t not respond to an email request. A phone number listed for ElBayly was directed to a fax machine.

TheDC also wanted to find out more about how the DOJ’s Bureau of Prisons chooses who can teach religious classes to inmates, but the agency did not respond. The Cumberland facility also did not respond to specific questions about ElBayly’s classes.[…]

  5. Saudi Arabia executions now at ‘unprecedented rate’ after kingdom kills four more in two days (independent, March 4, 2015)
    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/saudi-arabia-executions-now-at-unprecedented-rate-after-kingdom-kills-four-more-in-two-days-10085646.html

“The rate of executions in Saudi Arabia has reached “unprecedented” levels, a charity has warned, as the kingdom killed four criminals in two days on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Amnesty International said the latest state-sanctioned deaths took its tally of executions for the year so far in Saudi Arabia to 39 – almost three times the equivalent number for this time last year.

Local media say the Saudi authorities have attempted to hail the killings as an example of the government’s commitment to “maintaining security and realising justice”, a crackdown in response to the rise of extremism and the threat of Isis.

But Amnesty’s Saudi Arabia researcher Sevag Kechichian said the growing number of executions was all the more worrying because of the lack of “rhyme or reason” behind it….”

  6. Afghan forces kill dozens of militants in hostage rescue operation (yahoo, March 4, 2015)
    http://news.yahoo.com/afghan-forces-kill-dozens-militants-hostage-rescue-operation-164508899.html

“Afghan security forces have killed dozens of militants in a military operation aimed at freeing a group of civilian hostages in southern Afghanistan, an army official said on Wednesday.

Masked gunmen kidnapped around 30 passengers from two buses in the southern province of Zabul last week while they were traveling late at night to the capital, Kabul.

Eyewitnesses said most passengers belonged to the ethnic Hazara minority, a group that was persecuted by the Taliban during their hard-line rule in the late 1990s.

A team of Afghan army, police and intelligence agents had identified several locations where the civilians were being held, but had yet to free any hostages.

“The rescue operation is ongoing,” General Abdul Hameed, commander of the 205th Afghan army corps operating in the south of the country, told Reuters. “We have killed 48 insurgents and 21 of them are foreign fighters.”

He identified some militants as local Taliban, but did not indicate the nationalities of the foreign fighters….”

“As the so-called “Arab Spring” swept through the Muslim-majority world in 2011, some US officials and counterterrorism analysts proclaimed that al Qaeda had been left “on the sidelines.”

However, the limited selection of publicly-available documents captured in Osama bin Laden’s compound in May 2011 tell a different story. The al Qaeda chieftain and his subordinates saw an opportunity….”

  9. SOUTH KOREA – US Ambassador to South Korea rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after attack in Seoul

    • The assailant reportedly shouted “South and North Korea should be reunified!” before lashing out at the envoy.

The attacker also expressed his opposition to annual military exercises held jointly by South Korea and the US, which are currently under way.

North Korea has described the exercises – which involve more than 200,000 troops – as a rehearsal for an invasion and has vowed retaliation.

However, there is no evidence that the attacker was an agent of North Korea, the BBC’s Stephen Evans in Seoul reports.

      http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-31743055

      • The US troops are still in Korea because we are afraid that the South would attack the North if we pulled out. Most experts agree that they South would easily take the North but they also worry that China would invade to prevent the South from winning.

  10. 7/ Any serious effort to reform Islam first has to get rid of the Sunnah.

There are good reasons to think that even the so-called authentic hadiths were made-up anyhow, that Islamic law was not derived from the hadiths, but the hadiths were fabricated in support of Islamic law.

With the hadiths can go Ibn Ishaq / Ibn Hisham’s biography of Mo, since that is all Ibn Ishaq was really, another collector and retailer of tales about the pirate and the old days long after the after the fact.

Then Muslims would be in a position to turn to the Koran, decide it was inspired and not revealed, reorder it, edit the worst parts out and de-literalize anything left. That would be the beginning of reform in Islam.
