  2. He should be telling al-Baghdadi about how he’s going to be there at his imminent hanging, in order to trip the lever that controls the trap-door, because he has 11 aircraft carriers and Baghdadi doesn’t. He should save this wordy nonsense for another day – it makes him sound weak…

      • I have a hard time reading that photo as anything other than what it appears to be, Hussein flashing a sign of solidarity to some African brothers in Islam. And smirking. Too bad there isn’t a video to give it more context.

The first time I saw anyone make that gesture was in 2001 in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi driving the car I was in gave it to a Ramadan beggar who had accosted the vehicle. He didn’t want to give the beggar any money, and I took the sign to mean something like, ‘Allah will provide.’ This was long before I associated the gesture with the Muslim Brotherhood.

      • Paul Theroux is from your neck of the woods, I believe. I actually think he’s a great writer, but he doesn’t open his mouth in these 4 minutes except to say something idiotic. I know he’s written cranky lefty things here and there, but I wouldn’t characterize his work overall as leftist, as far as I’m familiar with it. He’s harsh on leftist do-gooders in Africa, for example, and most of thoughts about China in Riding the Iron Rooster I thought were clear-eyed. And yet here he might as well be a hypnotized chicken, for all the critical intelligence on view.

Islamic State Militants Find a Foothold in Chaotic Libya (abcnews, Feb 18, 2015)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/islamic-state-militants-find-foothold-chaotic-libya-29062839

“Libya, virtually a failed state in recent years, has succeeded in one way: It’s providing a perfect opportunity for the Islamic State group to expand from Syria and Iraq to establish a strategic foothold closer to European shores.

Extremists loyal to the group have taken control of two Libyan cities on the Mediterranean coast, have moved toward oil facilities and are slowly infiltrating the capital, Tripoli, and the second-largest city, Benghazi. They have siphoned off young recruits from rival militant groups linked to al-Qaida and in some places taken over those groups’ training camps, mosques and media networks.

Notably, there appears to be strong coordination between the Libya branch and the group’s central leadership in Syria and Iraq. One of its top clerics, Bahraini Turki al-Binali, has visited the Libyan city of Sirte to preach: in 2013 and again at the end of last year, soon before it fell into the hands of the group’s supporters, according to a rival militia official based there. The official spoke on condition of anonymity for fear for his life.

A video released last week showing the beheading of a group of Egyptian Christians abducted from Sirte was produced by the IS media branch.

About 400 mostly Yemeni and Tunisian fighters are in Sirte, according to Libyan Interior Minister Omar al-Sinki. The militia official said Islamic State fighters have set up headquarters in the city’s convention complex, the Ouagadougou Center, built by former dictator Moammar Gadhafi as a symbol of his secular regime’s aspirations to be a pan-African leader. An Associated Press reporter who briefly visited Sirte on Wednesday saw masked militants deployed along the main road linking the convention center to downtown….”

  4. Terror arrest: Mother with baby held at Heathrow (BBC, Feb 18, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-birmingham-31528558

“A woman travelling with her one-year-old son has been arrested at Heathrow Airport on suspicion of terrorism offences.

The mother, 25, from Birmingham, was also arrested on suspicion of child neglect and abduction.

Her alleged terror offences relate to Syria and she was held after arriving from Turkey, West Midlands Police said.

The force, which arrested her in a “pre-planned” operation, said there was no threat to the flight or airport.

Police said steps were being taken to ensure the child’s welfare.”

  5. Australian David Hicks overturns US terrorism conviction (BBC, Feb 19, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-31528159

“An Australian former Guantanamo Bay detainee has had his terrorism conviction overturned in the US.

David Hicks, 39, pleaded guilty at the base in Cuba in 2007 to providing material support to terrorism.

But a US court has struck down the conviction, on the grounds the charge was not a war crime and so should not have been heard at a military court.

Mr Hicks was captured in Afghanistan in 2001, where he attended al-Qaeda training camps and met Osama Bin Laden.

A Pentagon spokesman said the US would not appeal.

The unanimous ruling, by the US Court of Military Commission Review, reverses what had been one of the few successes in prosecuting Guantanamo detainees.

In January, a US military commission also overturned the conviction of a former Guantanamo inmate from Sudan, Noor Mohammed, who made a plea bargain under a similar charge to Mr Hicks.
    ‘No apology’

David Hicks told a news conference in Sydney that he “had been waiting for this decision for years”. “It’s a relief because it’s over,” he said.

He said he would not seek an official apology but that he should be compensated for medical treatment needed to “fix myself from torture”.

“It is being kept in metal rooms in freezing conditions for years, it is not being able to move or exercise,” he said.

“The body deteriorates over five-and-a-half years, even without the added torture, such as stress positions, being beaten, etc.”

His lawyer Stephen Kenny, meanwhile, said the decision confirmed that Mr Hicks’ actions had not been illegal at the time….”

Libya urges UN to lift arms embargo to tackle IS (BBC, Feb 19, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-31523944

“Libya has asked the UN Security Council to lift an arms embargo so that it can deal with the Islamic State (IS) group and other militants. Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Dairi said that it would help the government build its army and deal with “rampant terrorism”. Egypt said it supported Libya’s request at an emergency session of the UN council on Wednesday.

Rival militias have been battling for control in Libya since 2011. The worsening security situation has increased fears that the country’s warring militias may side with IS militants. Mr Dairi said Libya needed a “decisive stance” from the international community to be able to tackle the threat….”

  7. Air strike ‘kills dozens of mourners’ in Niger (BBC, Feb 19, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-31521279

“Thirty-seven people have died in an air strike in southern Niger, local officials say.

They were attending a funeral ceremony in Abadam village on the border with Nigeria when an unidentified plane began dropping bombs.

The incident came as the Nigerian army said more than 300 militants were killed in nearby north-east Nigeria during operations targeting Boko Haram.

Two soldiers lost their lives and 10 more were wounded in Borno state.

Nigerian defence spokesman Chris Olukolade said that a number of Boko Haram fighters had been captured and weapons and equipment seized.

The number of militant deaths has not been independently verified.

A military official told AFP news agency that an air strike had hit a mosque in the village of Abadam.

The deputy mayor of Abadam, Ibrahim Ari, told the BBC that a plane had dropped three bombs. One struck a group of mourners sitting in front of the residence of a local chief.

He added that more than 20 people had been injured during the incident.

It is not yet clear who was responsible for the bombardment, but Nigeria has denied responsibility….”

  8. Jeh Johnson: The Administration Must “Give Voice To The Plight Of Muslims”

DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY SECRETARY JEH JOHNSON: We in the administration and the government should give voice to the plight of Muslims living in this country and the discrimination that they face. And so I personally have committed to speak out about the situation that very often people in the Muslim community in this country face. The fact that there are 1.6 billion Muslims in the world and the Islamic faith is one about peace and brotherhood.

  10. Obama: ‘Islam Has Been Woven Into the Fabric of Our Country Since Its Founding’

In his speech on Wednesday, Obama was making the point that Western nations must show that they “welcome people of all faiths,” at a time when “extremists” are saying that Western nations are “hostile to Muslims.”

“Here in America, Islam has been woven into the fabric of our country since its founding. Generations — (applause) — Generations of Muslim immigrants came here and went to work as farmers and merchants and factory workers, helped to lay railroads and to build up America.

[…]In his remarks on Wednesday, President Obama said Muslim Americans now serve as police officers, firefighters, soldiers, “and in our intelligence communities and in homeland security.”

[…]In a speech to the same summit on Thursday, Obama noted that many Americans don’t personally know a single Muslim, and they form a distorted impression about Islam by what they hear on the news.
