1. Harper vows to appeal court ruling allowing women to wear niqab during citizenship oath, calls it ‘offensive’

The federal government will appeal a court ruling allowing a Muslim woman to wear a niqab while taking the oath of citizenship because it is “offensive” to shield your face at the moment you are being sworn in, the prime minister said Thursday.

Zunera Ishaq, the Toronto woman who challenged the government’s policy forbidding the wearing of facial coverings during the swearing-in part of citizenship ceremonies, said Thursday she was upset by the prime minister’s remarks but vowed to continue fighting through the court process.

“I’m not frustrated,” she said. “I’m determined.”

4. Islamic State militants attack Iraqi town near US base

Islamic State (IS) militants have launched an attack on a town in Iraq’s Anbar province, close to an airbase that is home to some 300 US marines.

The militants attacked the town of al-Baghdadi, 5km (three miles) from the Ain al-Asad base, where the US forces are training Iraqi troops.

Heavy fighting was reported around the town, west of Anbar’s capital, Ramadi.

The US is spearheading an air campaign against the militants, who seized large parts of Iraq and Syria last year.

The US military says its aircraft carried out several strikes on IS positions in Iraq on Thursday, mostly concentrated around the Iraqi towns of Mosul and Kirkuk.

Thank you Grace, M., ML., Yucki, Richard and many more. Thank you for your vigilance. SUN TV is gone but there are options. For the moment, we will perhaps have to be more aggressive about sending links around and speaking with all we can. But hopefully another broadcast media will appear that will offer some diversity of opinion in Canada which is now basically stuck with our version of Pravda except its only funny when they are trying not to be.

  1. It’s not a ‘family,’ it never was, and after decades of multiculturalism and mass immigration the metaphor is even less appropriate. Tribal Saudi Arabia is more nearly a single-family state and we know how well that works. Canada is hundreds of thousands or millions of families, a highly complex society now more fraught with division than ever (thank you PM Harper and others). Mr. Harper ought to avoid the sentimental rubbish that the country is anything like one big family unless he means one increasingly dysfunctional and fratricidal family.

The arrogance and presumption of the Muslim invaders (no part of my family) is as breathtaking as always.

‘Who, you should ask, wants a society of ethnic, religious and racial mixing if that leads, as it has done elsewhere, to racial tension and civil war? The answer is that Progressives love the idea because by reducing the cohesion of the mass, it can use the government to ‘protect’ the individual against competing religions, ethnicities and races. International businesses like the idea as well because international business is opposed to nationalism in all its forms.’

      • The tactic is called divide and conquer, this tactic has been used through out all of recorded history and allowing it to be used is one of the mistakes of history the left works to prevent the schools from teaching about.

  2. PAKISTAN – PESHAWAR – Worshipers killed in Peshawar mosque attack

At least 20 people killed, more than 65 injured, in attack on Shia mosque in Peshawar, Pakistan medical sources say.

An attack on a Shia mosque in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar has killed at least 20 people and injured more than 65 others, government officials say.

At least four suicide bombers, wearing security forces uniforms, hit the Imamia mosque during Friday prayers, officials and witnesses said.

Three of the attackers succeeded in exploding their vests, while one was unable to do so, Shafqat Malik, the chief of Peshawar’s police Bomb Disposal Unit (BDU), told Al Jazeera. The unexploded vest was defused by the BDU, he added, while several grenades were also recovered from the site.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack in an emailed statement.

Senior police official Rana Umer Hayat said several gunmen threw grenades into the mosque before storming the building.

The attackers appeared to gain access to the mosque, which is under tight security, from an under-construction building next door.

“They cut razor wire on the boundary wall to gain access,” provincial police chief Nasir Durrani said.
Once inside, the attackers were engaged by the mosque’s guards, as well as six policemen deputed to provided security to the building.

“The police and military forces that surrounded the area have now cleared the area, and are combing nearby areas for any attackers that may have escaped,” reported Al Jazeera’s Kamal Hyder from Islamabad, the Pakistani capital.

  3. Norwegians take command in ISIS, pose threat to Norway – security official

Some Islamist fighters from Norway are believed to have taken leading positions within Islamic States, according to the Norwegian Intelligence Service chief. A hundred and fifty Norwegians are thought to be fighting along terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

“We believe that some of the Norwegians in Isil [Isis] have risen to middle-management functions,” Kjell Grandhagen, the head of the Norwegian Intelligence Service, told Dagbladet newspaper.

“There are still several Norwegians who hold leadership positions in Isil,” Grandhagen told the newspaper.

He gave the example of ISIS commander Bastian Vasquez, a Norwegian of Chilean extraction who was reportedly killed in the fall, and an unnamed Norwegian of Eritrean parentage also known as an ISIS commander. A hundred and fifty Norwegians have joined ISIS according to the police authorities, Dagbladet reports.

Kjell Grandhagen claims Norwegians fighting for the ISIS were radicalized in the Profetens Ummah group which is active in eastern Norway close to the capital Oslo.

He explains it is a great threat to Norway as Norwegians who get combat experience in Syria and Iraq can use it back in their native country. Being in ISIS-controlled territory they are in touch with radicals from other countries, and in the future they can easily return to Norway as they possess valid passports and then commit a terrorist act or form an Islamist cell.

“We believe there is a significant terrorist danger against Norway,” the intelligence chief said. “There is a danger with returnees who can form cells in the West. And there is the psychological impact – people who are attracted by ideology, but who never even been in Iraq or Syria, which is calling for action and then perform it with the funds are available.”

The official believes ISIS has reached its peak, a culmination point, after being shaken by the considerable loss near Kobani and it needs to change its tactics, but its power should not be underestimated. Grandhagen assumes the anti-ISIS airstrikes will make Islamic State shift to a guerrilla war.

“We see an Isis… which is impaired in some areas and must change its tactical concept to adapt to the situation,” Grandhagen said. “But we have no faith in those who think that this is an organization that will let itself be defeated militarily in the near future. They have all the qualities needed to stand militarily for a long time, both in the areas where they reside and as a base for international terrorism.”

  4. Italy urges nationals to leave Libya due to heightened security risks

Italy has urged its nationals living in Libya to leave the country “temporarily” due to heightened security risks, the ANSA news agency reported Friday, saying the message came from the embassy in Tripoli.

The foreign ministry in Rome said the embassy communication merely confirmed an official travel advice issued on February 1, following the attack on the luxury Corinthia Hotel in Tripoli, which left 10 people dead, including five foreigners.

“We renew the pressing invitation to our citizens not to go to Libya and to those who are still there to temporarily leave the country,” the message on the Viaggiare Sicuri (Travel Safely) website of the foreign ministry says.

A ministry official told dpa that there are “120 to 130” Italians in the north African nation.

Italy has close historical and business ties to Libya, and is a former colonial power. It is the only major European country that still has an embassy open in Tripoli.

Libya has in recent months seen its worst violence since the 2011 ouster of longtime dictator Moamer Gaddafi. Two rival governments and a chaotic multitude of militias attached to them have been fighting each other, with the situation approaching a fully-fledged civil war.

DAILY STAR _ ( LEBANON ) Argentine president’s aide condemns ‘judicial coup’

Argentine President Cristina Kirchner’s cabinet chief accused the courts Friday of trying to stage a “judicial coup” by pursuing a dead prosecutor’s case against the embattled leader.

Kirchner has been under fire since prosecutor Alberto Nisman turned up dead after accusing her of covering up the involvement of Iranian officials in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish center in exchange for oil.

Argentine media reported Friday that a new prosecutor, Gerardo Pollicita, would take over the case and continue investigating the allegations.

That, plus a prosecutors’ march next Wednesday to mark one month since Nisman’s death, amount to “a strategy to actively stage a judicial coup, seeking to cause social unrest,” said cabinet chief Jorge Capitanich.

He compared Kirchner’s recent political woes to those facing other world leaders.

“The struggle in this world is between democracy and obscure groups linked to powerful economic interests. Barack Obama is facing an onslaught by the recalcitrant Republican right. In Brazil, Dilma Rousseff is suffering an attack with calls for impeachment,” he said.

The government presented its official rebuttal to Nisman’s allegations Friday, saying that “no action on the part of government officials was designed to dis-incriminate Iranian citizens.”

Nisman, 51, was found with a gunshot wound to the head on the eve of a congressional hearing at which he was to present his accusations that Kirchner shielded high-ranking Iranians, including former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, from prosecution over the bombing at the Argentine Jewish Mutual Association in Buenos Aires, which killed 85 people.

His death was initially labeled a suicide, but suspicion has fallen on Kirchner’s government.

The president has suggested Nisman was manipulated by disgruntled former intelligence agents who then killed him to smear her.

      • Argentina’s president Cristina Kirchner formally accused of bombing cover-up

BUENOS AIRES (AFP) – Argentine President Cristina Kirchner was formally accused on Friday of shielding Iranian officials from prosecution over a 1994 bombing at a Buenos Aires Jewish centre, prosecutors said.

The prosecution move advances the case against Kirchner that was being pursued by late prosecutor Alberto Nisman before he died mysteriously on the eve of congressional hearings on his accusations.

The accusation now goes to the judge in the case, Daniel Rafecas, to decide whether to call Kirchner to make a statement.

Kirchner has been under fire since Nisman turned up dead after accusing her of covering up the involvement of high-ranking Iranian officials in the deadly bombing in exchange for oil.

The new prosecutor in the case, Gerardo Pollicita, accepted Nisman’s conclusions and accused Kirchner, Foreign Minister Hector Timerman and other government officials of mounting a cover-up and violating their duties, according to a prosecution statement.

Nisman, 51, was found in his Buenos Aires apartment with a gunshot wound to the head on Jan 18.

His death was initially labelled a suicide, but suspicion has fallen on Kirchner’s government.

The President has suggested Nisman was manipulated by disgruntled former intelligence agents who then killed him to smear her.
