1. Bail denied for man accused of threatening to burn wife’s genitals, rape

QUEBEC CITY – There will be no bail for a Quebec City man who is accused of threatening to burn his wife’s face and genitals with acid, forcing her to have sex and citing the Koran to justify beating their children.

The 40-year-old man was arrested on Jan. 26 after his wife filed a complaint with police, alleging that he had threatened her in a Walmart.

“The accused is possessive, he feels his wife belongs to him. He invokes the Koran when he hits his children. He tells his wife that if she leaves him, he will burn her face and genitals with acid. Today, his wife has left him, and she in danger because of it,” Judge Bernard Lemieux said in his ruling Friday.

2. US accuses 6 immigrants of helping Islamic State group

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Six Bosnian immigrants have been accused of sending money and equipment to terrorists oversees, including fighters with the Islamic State group and al-Qaida in Iraq, the U.S. attorney’s office announced Friday.

An indictment unsealed Friday in St. Louis said the defendants donated money themselves and in some cases collected funds from others in the U.S. and sent the donations overseas. It says two of the defendants used some of the money to buy U.S. military uniforms, firearms accessories, tactical gear and other equipment, which was shipped to people in Turkey and Saudi Arabia who forwarded the supplies to terrorists.

3. Mass shooting at US mall. Paper launches newspeak for being shot:

The station said police from jurisdictions outside the town of Monroeville were called in to help look for the shooting suspect.

A person who answered the phone at the Monroeville Police Department declined to comment.

Local television station KDKA, citing witnesses, said several people were struck by bullets.

(No description of any suspects naturally. Must be hard to look for them)

4. Rocket attacks on Damascus kill 10 after Islam Army warning

(Reuters) – Rocket attacks killed 10 people in Damascus on Thursday and wounded at least 50, a monitoring group said, in the second heavy bombardment by Islam Army insurgents in less than two weeks.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors violence in Syria, also said the army had responded with at least 40 air strikes in the Eastern Ghouta district, where Islam Army is based, and that 57 people had been killed.

Islam Army was formed by a merger of rebel factions in 2013. It follows an Islamist doctrine and has in the past received backing from Saudi Arabia.

Syria’s state news agency, SANA, said five people had been killed in what it said was a bombardment by “takfiri terrorists”. “Takfiri” is a term used to describe hardline Sunni groups who consider other people infidels.

(I believe ‘takfiri’ means that they are accusing the other side of apostasy, not just of being an infidel although both carry the death penalty, accusations of takfir carry a greater amount of anger when they burn you alive or throw rocs at you then if you are a garden variety unbeliever. It is not surprising the media is clueless on this)

5. Niqab ban at citizenship ceremony struck down by court

The Federal Court of Canada has ruled it is “unlawful” for Ottawa to order new citizens to remove their face-covering veil when taking the oath of citizenship.

The federal government must immediately lift its existing ban allowing Toronto’s Zunera Ishaq to reschedule a new citizenship ceremony unless it appeals the ruling and receives the permission to suspend the order, the Federal Court said in a decision released Friday.

While it is not unusual to have government policies overturned in breach of Charter and constitutional rights, the court ruling is unusual because the decision was based on the finding that the ban mandated by the immigration minister violated the government’s own immigration laws.

“To the extent that the policy interferes with a citizenship judge’s duty to allow candidates for citizenship the greatest possible freedom in the religious solemnization or the solemn affirmation of the oath,” wrote Justice Keith M. Boswell, “it is unlawful.”

Ishaq was sponsored by her husband to Canada from Pakistan in 2008 and successfully passed the citizenship test in November 2013.

Thank you Don L., M., ML., Richard, Wrath of Khan and all. More to come very soon.

  1. 5. Well done Canada! Support for a backward custom of the most retrograde of the Muslim immigrants the country couldn’t manage without. Never mind that there are Muslim-majority countries, where shariah is the supreme law of the land, in which women are not even allowed wear a niqab for university entrance exams. No such oppression in Canada! Whose business is it anyway, if a body wants to go around dressed up like a covert feudal Japanese mercenary?

  2. Local television station KDKA, citing witnesses, said several people were struck by bullets.

Tut tut. Surely they mean that several people struck bullets.

This kind of arouses the suspicion that the RoP is involved – perhaps in revenge for the Crusades, or was it Bosnia?

    • It is more likely that this shooting was a continuing violence caused by the police defending themselves in Ferguson and New York City.

  4. “I believe ‘takfiri’ means that they are accusing the other side of apostasy, not just of being an infidel although both carry the death penalty”

I see an etymological link between the words “kaffir” and “takfir” that suggests that “takfir” is very much a matter of declaring the other person to be a “kaffir”.

Remember that traditionally Arabic writing had only consonants and that 3 consonants carry the meanings of root words. In this case, KFR. I have not studied Arabic, but I see patterns in usage that suggest to me that “ta-” seems to be a prefix indicating a non-human thing or quality. (The prefix “mu-” seems to indicate “a person who …”).

    Just my thoughts FWIW.
