2. Jordanian state media claims pilot was killed 1 month ago, not today

It said he was killed on January 3, before the jihadists offered to spare his life and free a Japanese journalist in return for the release of an Iraqi would-be suicide bomber on death row in Jordan.

Amman insisted on proof that the pilot, captured on December 24 after his F-16 jet crashed while on a mission over northern Syria, was alive before any exchange.

5. UN Agency Alarmed Over Images of IS Distributing Its Food

The U.N.’s World Food Program says it is “extremely concerned” about images circulating on social media showing Islamic State labels affixed to its food aid boxes in Syria.

It said in a statement Monday that it was still trying to verify the photos, but that they appear to have been taken in the northern Syrian village of Deir Hafer, which was last reached by the WFP on Aug. 5, when a convoy delivered 1,700 food rations, enough to feed 8,500 people for a month.

The WFP said it learned in September that IS members raided Red Crescent warehouses in the village where the rations may have been stored.

“WFP condemns this manipulation of desperately needed food aid inside Syria,” said Muhannad Hadi, its emergency regional coordinator for the Syria crisis.

  1. CANADA – 3 Ottawa men with alleged ISIS ties face terrorism-related charges
Awso Peshdary arrested, warrants issued for John Maguire and Khadar Khalib

[…]Peshdary, 25, was taken into custody earlier today in Ottawa.

Peshdary’s arrest deals a blow to ISIS’ recruitment infrastructure in Canada, police maintain, adding that the charges against Peshdary represent the first time a major radicalizer has been arrested in Canada.

Peshdary is a familiar name in security circles. Five years ago he was arrested as part of an RCMP terror investigation dubbed “Project Samosa,” said at the time to be the largest terrorism investigation in Canada since 9/11.

However, he was not charged with terror offences and was released.

The charges he now faces link him not only to Maguire and Khalib, but to Suliman Mohamed and twins Ashton and Carlos Larmond. Mohamed and the Larmond twins were charged with similar terror offences in early January.

  2. Gaza conflict: Schabas quits UN inquiry over bias claims (BBC, Feb 3, 2015)

“The head of a UN inquiry into potential war crimes committed during the 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict has resigned amid allegations of anti-Israel bias.

William Schabas acknowledged he had previously done work for the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), and did not want this to compromise the probe.

Israel had accused Prof Schabas of “clear and documented bias” against it.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the investigation should now be scrapped.

The inquiry’s panel, which was commissioned by the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), is due to issue its findings in March.
    ‘Conflict of interest’

Mr Netanyahu said the council was “an anti-Israel body” whose record proved it had “nothing to do with human rights”.

“This is the same council that in 2014 made more decisions against Israel than against Iran, Syria and North Korea combined,” he said….”

  3. Palestinian paper apologises over ‘Muhammad cartoon’ (BBC, Feb 3, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-31119447

“An official Palestinian newspaper has apologised to its readers for publishing a drawing that is alleged to have depicted the Prophet Muhammad.

The Palestinian Authority’s Al-Hayat-al-Jadida also denied that the drawing – of a robed figure standing over the Earth – represented the Prophet.

Most Muslims view any depictions of the Prophet as forbidden – and offensive.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has ordered an inquiry into the publication of the cartoon.

The official Palestinian news agency, Wafa, said Mr Abbas had called for “deterrent action against those responsible for this terrible mistake”.

Mr Abbas was among the world leaders who attended a rally in Paris last month to condemn a deadly gun attack on the offices of a satirical magazine that had caricatured Muhammad…”

  4. Geneva convention and burning POW’s alive.

This seems elementary to me but if on side is burning prisoners and the other abides by their own rules. what incentive do they have to change?

    • The Geneva convention works on the principle of a shared set of ideas about the purpose of war etc. The Geneva convention cannot possibly mean anything to savages. They are not trying to solve a geopolitical conflict based on a failure to agree as to who has sovereignty over a piece of land in the way Henry V did in France for example, where both sides, if Shakespeare is to be believed, acted with remarkable decency and civility till it was determined, and then after that, both sides acted in an even more civil manner towards the other. And this was many centuries before the Geneva convention.

But let’s say Shakespeare was not depicting the truth at all. It is still a massive credit to our culture that we would want the lies to be about how decent we are. That our historical revisionism wouldn’t be about how we were victorious with terror, or how creative we could be in our cruelty, but about how we would hold our own fighters to a standard greater than that of the enemy, and hang them if they stole a single cup or harmed a civilian for personal reasons. The fact that Shakespeare wrote it that way shows our cultural greatness even if its only in aspiration and not fact.

The Islamic State, in all ways, is a long way from Geneva.

      • massive credit to our culture that we would want the lies to be about how decent we are
I hadn’t thought about it, good point. (Great point, but I don’t want to sound all girly-syrupy.)

      • When I was on active duty one clause of the Geneva Convention said that if the people you are fighting hadn’t signed the Convention you did have to follow it. I don’t know if the left has removed this clause or not. Another clause said that if one side broke the convention and murdered prisoners the other side was allowed to kill a lot more prisoners in retaliation. Once again I don’t know if the left has removed this clause. I do know that they have managed to insert so many killer clauses in the document that if any nation tries to follow them they are doomed to lose the war.

“Iraqi officials say a series of bombs across Baghdad have killed more than a dozen civilians, with a heavy focus on commercial areas.

The deadliest bombing happened in central Baghdad’s popular Karradah area, where police and hospital officials say three bombs hit Wathiq Square, a popular commercial district packed with restaurants and shops, killing at least five people and wounding 15.

In al-Talbiyah, a neighborhood in eastern Baghdad, at least three civilians were killed and eight wounded in a blast. Officials say three were also killed in the Nahbah section of central Baghdad, and 10 were wounded. Also, in south Baghdad, a bomb tore through a commercial district in the Nahrawan neighborhood, killing two people and wounding seven.

Speaking on the floor of the National Assembly on Monday, Bilour also announced a $100,000 compensation for the families of those killed during the deadly attack on Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris last month. “I had already declared that I will not tolerate any attack on the sanctity of the prophet ,” said Bilour.

        • This statement shows how the military are under the control of the civilian politicians, he is trying hard to find a way to say we will do nothing.

These are the acts of a barbarian and history says that if the civilized nations don’t fight the war as a war of survival the barbarians will win.

  9. U.S. plans to boost aid to Jordan to $1 bln per year

The United States on Tuesday announced plans to increase annual aid to Jordan to $1 billion from $660 million to help it pay for the cost of housing refugees from Iraq and Syria and of fighting Islamic State militants.

An agreement on the aid, which is subject to the approval of the U.S. Congress, was signed before the wide release of a video that appeared to show Islamic State militants burning a captured Jordanian pilot alive.

Jordan is one of a handful of Arab states that have taken part in a U.S.-led air campaign against the Islamic State group, which last year seized swaths of Iraq and Syria. The pilot, Mouath al-Kasaesbeh, was captured in December after his F-16 crashed in territory controlled by the militants in Syria.

In a brief statement, the U.S. State Department said it planned to provide $1 billion per year to Jordan for each of the U.S. fiscal years for 2015, 2016 and 2017. The U.S. fiscal year ends on Sept. 30.

“The United States recognizes Jordan’s increased immediate needs resulting from regional unrest, the efforts Jordan is undertaking at the forefront of the fight against ISIL and other extremist ideology and terrorism, the influx of refugees from Syria and Iraq, the disruption of foreign energy supplies, and other unprecedented strains,” the State Department said.

The Islamic State group is also know as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

“The increase for the period of FY 2015 to FY 2017 is designed to address Jordan’s short-term, extraordinary needs, including those related to regional instability and rising energy costs,” the State Department adde
