  1. CBC – NEWS – Mark Steyn, Mohamed El Rashidy on religious sensitivity and freedom of expression

Best-selling author and commentator Mark Steyn and the director of the Canadian Arab Federation, Mohamed El Rashidy, debate satirical commentary and religious sensitivity on CBC News Network’s Power & Politics.

  2. Can anyone explain to me this — when somebody kill policeman in US or people at Hebdo in France media are calling this “execution” and NOT the “killing”
    Why?
In the Webster dictionary “execution” means “the act of killing someone, especially as punishment for a crime” so why the hell media are using this word for killing a person.

  3. Islamic State attacks checkpoints in Iraq’s Samarra (BBC, Jan 8, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-30725552

“Islamic State militants have attacked Iraqi security forces in the central city of Samarra, killing two people and injuring 28 others, officials say.

They reportedly carried out five suicide bomb attacks on checkpoints along a motorway west of Samarra.

The bombings were followed by mortar attacks on the city itself.

IS surrounded Samarra, a predominantly Sunni city that is home to one of Shia Islam’s holiest sites, after launching an offensive in northern Iraq in June.

Soldiers and allied Shia militiamen have managed to stop the jihadists overrunning the city, and have recently retaken towns and villages to the south with the help of US-led coalition air strikes.

The latest assault on Samarra by IS militants, who regard Shia as heretics who should be killed, began before sunrise on Thursday.

Two policemen and a civilian were killed when pick-up trucks carrying water tanks filled with explosives were driven towards the checkpoints and blown up.

It is not clear how many of them reached their targets, but they were followed by mortar attacks on the city and an assault by gunmen.

After several hours of battling the security forces, the gunmen are reported to have retreated under fire from Iraqi warplanes…”

MI5 boss warns ‘we cannot stop every UK terror threat’ (BBC, Jan 9, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-30734290

“The threat of a terror attack in the UK is increasing and the security services cannot be expected to stop every plot, the head of MI5 has warned.

Speaking after the attack on the French magazine Charlie Hebdo, Andrew Parker said police and MI5 had “stopped three UK terrorist plots” in recent months.

He said the number of Britons who have travelled to Syria was now around 600.

It comes as security has been increased on the France/UK border following the Paris attack, which left 12 dead.

UK border staff had “intensified checks on passengers, on vehicles and goods coming from France” following the killings in France, Home Secretary Theresa May announced.

The move was a “precautionary” measure and was not as a result of any specific intelligence, she added…”

  5. Charlie Hebdo hunt: Shooting as French police close in (BBC, Jan 9, 2015)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-30740115

“One person has reportedly been shot dead in northern France as police close in on gunmen suspected of killing staff at Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris.

Several other people were wounded in the shooting in Dammartin-en-Goele, about 35km (22 miles) from the capital.

At least one hostage has been taken at a warehouse in the small town, French media reports suggest.

The development comes nearly 48 hours since the attack on the magazine’s office, when 12 people were shot dead.

The heavily armed gunmen fled Paris by car after the attack.

A convoy of police vehicles is heading by motorway to Dammartin-en-Goele.”

  6. This is how freedom is killed off. Little by little, piece by piece: on how the State will cede yet more ground to terrorists in the wake of the Paris massacre

We pussy-foot around anything which may cause offence to Muslims, partly out of good manners but primarily because we are worried about the potential backlash.

The reason most of the media in the Western world steered clear of republishing the Danish cartoons of Mohammed wasn’t because they were not newsworthy but because of fears that men in balaclavas with machine-guns might march into the front office and start firing at random.

  7. 4/ Hear, hear.

Whatever criticisms people might have of Hitchens, his defense of the Danish cartoonists was clear-eyed and admirable.

  8. The video of the event that got Eric Brazau 18 (or 20) months jail time is currently on Youtube, and can be found by searching ‘Eric Brazau 18 months.’ It’s 35 minutes long. Brazau’s approach is not exactly what I understood from news reports. He stages dialogues about Islam with one confederate while another films. However one might judge Brazau’s dress sense or tone of voice or demeanor, the facts on which the exchanges are based are such as will be familiar to students of Islam and are readily verifiable. Not that truth is any longer a defense in Canada.

As a ‘social experiment,’ as Brazau described it, I would call it a success, in that it’s interesting to watch (for anyone with an interest in political correctness and the progress of Islam in Canada) and it provides insight into Toronto society without doing the experimental subjects’ any actual harm. Some ‘wounded feelings,’ perhaps, which is one reason Brazau is in prison. As far as I can see, the only obvious lawbreaker in the video is the guy who pushed the emergency button on the subway to stop a lively argument about Islam.

  9. SWEDEN -Swedish far-right leader reported to police for ‘anti-Islam comment’

A Swedish member of parliament reported a far-right leader to the police on Friday for alleged incitement to hatred over a comment related to the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris.

In a Facebook comment to an article on the killings at the French satirical weekly’s office Wednesday, the party secretary of the Sweden Democrats Bjoern Soeder wrote “‘The religion of peace’ shows its face.”

“He has linked practising Muslims to a terrorist act, it’s extremely offensive,” Veronica Palm, from the ruling Social Democratic party told TV4 news.

“This statement is offensive to a group of people and I want to see if it comes under laws against inciting racial hatred,” said Palm.

Soeder is also a deputy speaker of the Swedish parliament where his anti-immigration party doubled its support to 13 percent in a September election — making it Sweden’s third political party.[…]
