6. EU court takes Hamas off terrorist organisations list

A top court of the European Union has annulled the bloc’s decision to keep the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on a list of terrorist groups.

The decision had been based not on an examination of Hamas’ actions, but on “factual imputations derived from the press and the internet”, judges found.

The court said the move was technical and was not a reassessment of Hamas’ classification as a terrorist group.

It said a funding freeze on the group would continue for the time being.

The 15-year-old from Tower Hamlets had bought an airline ticket to Istanbul in Turkey without her parents knowledge.

The Met said its counter-terrorism team stopped the plane, which was already moving, on 6 December.

  3. Somaliland seizes Yemeni and Egyptian vessels (BBC, Dec 17, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-30513110

“Somaliland has seized more than 51 Yemeni boats and an Egyptian ship for fishing illegally in its waters, an official has told the BBC.

Admiral Ahmed Osman said coastguards had also arrested more than 250 fishermen who were on board.

This is the biggest arrest ever by Somaliland’s coastguards, trained by Western states to curb piracy and illegal fishing off its coast.

Illegal fishing has depleted fishing stocks along the Somali coast.

Correspondents say years of illegal fishing by foreign trawlers devastated the livelihoods of many people, some of whom then became pirates who attacked vessels for ransom.

Piracy in the region has declined in recent years following the deployment of a multi-national naval force.

Last month, the EU Naval Force provided training and equipment to the Somaliland coastguard.

Somaliland unilaterally declared independence from Somalia in 1991, but is not recognised by the United Nations or any government.”

  4. Al-Sweady Inquiry: UK army murder claims ‘deliberate lies’ (BBC, Dec 17, 2014)

“Allegations of murder and torture made against British soldiers by Iraqi detainees were “deliberate lies”, a five-year public inquiry has ruled.

The £31m Al-Sweady Inquiry found claims that up to 20 Iraqis were killed and mutilated after a 2004 battle were “reckless speculation”.

The murder allegations were withdrawn from the inquiry earlier this year.

The report also found British soldiers mistreated nine Iraqi detainees, but it was not deliberate ill-treatment.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said the inquiry “puts to rest once and for all these shocking and, as we now know, completely baseless allegations”….”

    http://zeenews.india.com/news/world/isis-beheads-150-females-including-pregnant-women-for-refusing-to-marry-terrorists_1516433.html

“As the world along with Pakistan mourns the death of children killed in the dastardly carried out terrorist attack in an army-run school in Peshawar by Taliban, reports of more violence from another brutal terror group have emerged.

Islamic State militants have reportedly beheaded at least 150 women, some of them pregnant, for refusing to marry them.

Iraq’s Ministry of Human Rights, in a statement released, said that the women in the western Iraqi province of Al-Anbar were attacked by the Islamic State terrorists and were later buried in mass graves in Fallujah.

“At least 150 females, including pregnant women, were executed in Fallujah by a militant named Abu Anas Al-Libi after they refused to accept jihad marriage,” the statement said.

Last month, at least 50 men, women and children were executed by the IS members in a tribe massacre in the village of Ras al-Maa.

“The bodies of more than 230 people believed to have been killed by Islamic State (IS) have been found in a mass grave in eastern Syria, activists say.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said they were thought to be members of a tribe that fought the jihadist group in Deir al-Zour province in the summer.

The mass grave was discovered after the Sheitat were allowed to return to their homes by IS leaders, it added.

Last month, the UN said it had received reports of a massacre there in August.

Investigators said it appeared to have been perpetrated by IS in a struggle for control of oil resources near the town of Mohassan.

One survivor described seeing “many heads hanging on walls while I and my family escaped”, while locals saw several freshly-dug mass graves.

Video published online also indicated that IS fighters had conducted a mass execution of fighting-age Sheitat tribesmen….”

“Kurdish Iraqi forces launched a major operation Wednesday to retake the militant-held town of Sinjar in northern Iraq, part of a push to secure the road that leads directly to the Syrian border.

Peshmerga forces, backed by U.S.-led coalition airstrikes, moved into the town, which has been under the control of the Islamic State group since August, a statement from the Kurdish Regional Security Council said. Peshmerga fighters were able to retake at least eight small villages around Sinjar, driving “large numbers” of militants to flee to Mosul and other areas under their control, the statement added.

The U.S.-led Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve said Wednesday it conducted two airstrikes near Sinjar, destroying two militant vehicles, guard towers and a number of IS containers. Saudi cleric stirs controversy on face veil (CNN, Dec 17, 2014)
    http://edition.cnn.com/2014/12/17/world/meast/saudi-cleric-veil-controversy/index.html

“A prominent Saudi cleric has created a storm of controversy by appearing on a popular television show alongside his wife, whose face was uncovered, challenging a fundamental religious tradition in the conservative kingdom.

Sheikh Ahmed al-Ghamdi once headed the religious police in the Muslim holy city of Mecca, but now says the full-face veil imposed on all women in the country is not imperative in Islam.

“No one is saying that it is not allowed for a woman to cover her face, but I am saying that it is not obligatory and I have evidence in jurisprudence of this,” al-Ghamdi told Badria al-Bishr, the female host of the television program.

He explained that people became confused about ancient texts that mentioned the head scarf and the robe that women were commanded to wear.

“Later, people confused the hijab, which was imposed only on the wives of the Prophet Mohammed, with what Allah imposed on Muslim women in general,” al-Ghamdi said.

The bold statements contest Saudi Arabia’s image as a nation of women clad in loose black garb known as abayas and peering through a face veil, or niqab, from behind the required male guardian.

“My message to Sheikh al-Ghamdi is to fear God,” Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Sheikh told the Saudi news site Sabq. “You should ask repentance from God, and to back away from this mistake before you meet God with these sins.”….”

  11. USA – Kennesaw – Georgia city approves mosque following legal threats

City Council officials in Kennesaw, Georgia, voted to approve the opening of a mosque in a local shopping center, despite some opposition from local residents, after supporters threatened to sue the city for violating their religious freedom rights.

The proposal passed by a vote of 5-0, reversing a 4-1 decision against the mosque that was made in early December.

According to WSB TV, the shopping center local Muslims wanted to use is “mostly vacant.” The Suffa Dawat Center wants to open its mosque there for two years while it looks into building a more permanent place of worship elsewhere.

After the City Council’s original vote, though, Muslim residents threatened to sue the city for violating their First Amendment right to freedom of religion. They argued that a Christian church was permitted in another shopping center, and a complaint was filed with the Justice Department.

City clerk Pam Davis told Reuters that the Christian church was approved, but it was operating in a “completely different zoning” area.

Nevertheless, council members reconsidered their vote and decided to approve the mosque.

“I think we have achieved success for the whole community including those who oppose us,” mosque member Khalid Hashmi told WSB.

“The Bible says love thy neighbor. Our religion teaches love your neighbor,” said Samir Malik, another member.

Kennesaw Mayor Mark Mathews told MSNBC that while council members did not detail their reasons for changing their votes, he believes the decision is a positive one for the city.

“My hopes are that Kennesaw will continue to be viewed as a family-friendly city that is also a great place to live, work, learn, play, and worship,” Mathews said.

Still, many residents were unhappy with the council’s flip-flop. Before the decision was announced, protesters gathered outside of City Hall to express their opposition. They held signs that read “Ban Islam!” and “No Mosque!” according to WND.com, and also waved American flags.

“The imams in the mosques are all striving towards the establishment of a caliphate and you can’t have a constitutional republic along with a caliphate,” said local resident Linc Doberman to the website. “So you can allow it to continue creeping in, until you feel the deep, red welts of domination.”

    http://rt.com/usa/215019-georgia-approves-mosque-islam/

    • Oh, to shallower things:

““The Bible says love thy neighbor. Our religion teaches love your neighbor,” said Samir Malik, another member.”

Communists say love thy neighbor and give each according to their need.
Socialists say love thy neighbor and take according to what is fair.
Muslims say love themselves unless they deviate from the fatwas.

Each hate and gang-up on anyone outside their ideology.

Jesus, with a big dose of Hellenism was saying love the person who is ideologically opposed to you.

That’s the revolutionary idea – to free the mind by presenting a paradox. To love the neighbor who is not like you and your God expressly hates because your God is jealous and lit the fire that caused Elijah to kill the worshippers of Baal. Makes a certain type of person want to kill Jesus, doesn’t it.

Try that today, and they’d all want to kill a person like him. They would outlaw anyone who preached repentance of judgement and forgiveness of transgressors. The bloody cheek of it.

Islam has nothing to offer but slavery. Blind obedience, giving-to-get and submission is the opposite of goodness, charity and mercy.

  13. Islamic State recapture parts of northern refinery city Baiji

Islamic State insurgents forced Iraqi forces to retreat on Wednesday after fierce fighting in the city of Baiji, close to the country’s biggest oil refinery, a local official and tribal leader said.

Local police and anti-Islamic State fighters tried to repel insurgents for five days, but lack of support and ammunition had forced them to leave their positions in central Baiji to the militants, said Saad Thahir, a Baiji council member.

Before the latest clashes erupted last week, security forces and allied militias had stationed themselves inside the vital refinery facilities and left the defence of the city itself to under-equipped local police and Sunni tribal fighters.
