  1. What a ride! What a race! Wait, isnt this by any chance racist? 😉

‘Ebola winning the race,’ says UN official Anthony Banbury (BBC, Oct 15, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-29625481

“The UN’s Ebola mission chief says the world is falling behind in the race to contain the virus, with thousands of new cases predicted by December. “It is running faster than us, and it is winning the race,” Anthony Banbury told the UN Security Council.

Meanwhile, more questions are being asked in the US about how a nurse in Texas became infected with the virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) says 4,447 people have died from the outbreak, mainly in West Africa.

Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea have been hardest hit by the outbreak, which began in December 2013 but was confirmed in March. US President Barack Obama said on Tuesday that “the world as a whole is not doing enough” to contain the Ebola threat.

He will discuss the Ebola crisis in a video conference on Wednesday with British, French, German and Italian leaders, the White House says….”

“A second health worker in the US state of Texas has tested positive for Ebola, health officials say.

A 26-year-old female nurse is already receiving treatment after becoming infected by a Liberian man who died from the deadly virus last week.

  3. Saudi Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr ‘sentenced to death’ (BBC, Oct 15, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-29627766

“A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced a prominent Shia cleric to death, his brother has said on Twitter.

Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr went on trial in Riyadh last year after being accused by prosecutors of “sowing discord” and “undermining national unity”.

The cleric was a vocal supporter of the mass anti-government protests that erupted in Eastern Province in 2011.

His arrest two years ago, during which he was shot and wounded by police, triggered days of deadly unrest.

Oil-rich Eastern Province is home to a Shia majority that has long complained of marginalisation at the hands of the Sunni royal family….”

  4. Islamic State crisis: US intensifies airs strikes in Kobane (BBC, Oct 15, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-29617941

“US-led forces have stepped up air strikes against Islamic State (IS) fighters threatening the Syrian town of Kobane, near the Turkish border.

The coalition had carried out 21 strikes over two days, a sharp increase that slowed IS advances, the US said.

President Barack Obama predicted a “long-term campaign” against the group, which holds swathes of Syria and Iraq.

He was speaking at a meeting of military commanders from 22 countries that have joined the anti-IS coalition.

“This is an operation that involves the world” against IS, Mr Obama said after the meeting at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington.

“There are going to be periods of progress and setbacks,” he added….”

  5. Maybe some silver lining… Just maybe…

Asylum seeker baby born in Australia denied refugee visa (BBC, Oct 15, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-29625556

“Australia’s federal court has ruled that a baby born in Australia to an asylum seeker is not entitled to a refugee visa.

Ferouz Myuddin, who is 11 months old, was born in Brisbane when his mother was transferred to hospital from a detention centre in Nauru.

The family are Muslim Rohingyas from Myanmar (Burma) who said they fled to Australia to escape persecution.

Lawyers said the case would affect at least 100 other babies.

Ferouz’s family landed on Australia’s Christmas Island in September last year.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison had denied Ferouz a protection visa – which allows refugees to live permanently in Australia – on the basis that he had arrived on Australian territory by sea illegally.

His parents then appealed to the Federal Court but after examining how the family had entered Australia, Judge Michael Jarrett backed the government view.

Lawyer Murray Watt said he was advising the Myuddin family, currently staying in a detention centre in Darwin, to appeal….”
