“Police in Uganda say they have seized large amounts of explosives during raids on suspected al-Shabab militants.

Authorities said the terrorist cell was planning to carry out imminent attacks in the capital Kampala.

Nineteen people have been arrested and are being interrogated about their intentions, a police spokesman said.

Uganda has been on high alert since al-Shabab’s leader, Ahmed Abdi Godane, was killed in a US air strike in Somalia earlier this month….”

“Two British nationals have been found dead on a beach in southern Thailand, according to local police. A man and a woman are understood to have suffered serious head wounds on the island of Koh Tao. Their bodies were found early Monday.

The pair arrived in Thailand last month, according to a police official, who said officers were yet to identify a suspect or motive.

The UK Foreign Office said it was urgently investigating the reports.

Meanwhile, police have banned boats from leaving the island.

Koh Tao is popular with divers, but draws fewer travellers than other nearby resorts, says BBC correspondent in Bangkok, Jonathan Head.”

  3. Libya migrant boat sinks: Scores feared drowned (BBC, Sept 15, 2014)

“Many migrants have drowned while trying to reach Europe after their boat sank off Libya, the Libyan navy says.

Navy spokesman Ayub Qassem said 36 people had been rescued after the vessel – which carried 250 – went down near Tajoura, east of Tripoli.

“There are so many dead bodies floating in the sea,” Mr Qassem told reporters.

The tragedy comes just weeks after three vessels carrying migrants sank in quick succession on the route from Libya to Italy.

There has been a surge in the number of migrants leaving Libya this year, with human traffickers taking advantage of the chaos in Libya….”

  4. ‘Islamic State fighter’ to go on trial in Germany (BBC, Sept 15, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-29203159

“A 20-year-old man is going on trial in Germany on charges of fighting for Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria.

Prosecutors say Kreshnik Berisha received weapons training and combat experience with the jihadist militants over several months last year.

He was arrested at Frankfurt airport last December while on his way home.

The trial – the first in Germany for alleged membership of IS – comes amid growing alarm at the potential threat posed by jihadis returning to Europe.

IS is thought to have attracted hundreds of recruits from European countries in its battle to establish what it describes as a “caliphate”, spanning a borderless stretch of Syria and Iraq.

Jihadist groups in Syria are thought to have attracted some 400 Islamists from Germany alone….”
