Leftism and Islam. Strange bedfellows but then, that is what leftism is all about. Links post 1 for July 21 2014

1. Obama attempts to pressure Israel into a deal that saves the tunnels and favors Hamas.

(Obama appears to be clinging to his glory days when the Muslim Brotherhood controlled Egypt and brokered a Hamas-favor deal with Israel. But why not a deal with the current Egyptian government?)

2. Watch this video of a Sudanese cleric explaining that all Americans are legitimate targets for death according to Islamic law.

(I am currently reading, and may in fact do my own rendition of an audiobook of it, G.K. Chesterton’s the Flying Inn, written in 1914 about an ‘impossible’ future where England is ruled by a form of ‘moderate’ islam. The thing that gets me about it so far is the way Chesterton nails Islamic reasoning. In a way, the most offensive aspect of that repugnant mindset as it leads to all the actions and suffering that stem from it)

3. Gunmen in Kenya kill four in Mombasa

The violence has largely been attributed to Somali al-Shabab militants but many say local political rifts are to blame.

(If Al-Shabab are militants what do you have to do to become a terrorist? Scratch that, the answer is the Michael Jackson skin treatment)

4. What does Islam and the BBC have in common? Besides raping children and killing people I mean.

5. And now for some good news. Muslim women seek to create a more target rich environment.

“A growing group of British women have moved to Syria to raise children under the radical Isis regime.” Where did these “British” women learn their understanding of Islam? British authorities know that the vast majority of Muslims in Britain have no interest in jihad violence, and that the real problem is “Islamophobia” — so why has “a growing group of British women” decided to raise children in the caliphate?

6. Wave of Hate Directed at Jews in Comments on French Websites

(I wonder if we were to check the syntax of those comments as well as look for missing articles like the French equivalent of ‘a’, ‘the’ etc. if we could learn anything about the native language of those who posted them)

According to The Local the bombardment of Gaza has enflamed tensions particularly in France, which has Western Europe’s largest Muslim population as well as largest Jewish population.

Street protests in Paris in support of Gaza have ended with attacks on two synagogues and violence directed against police, who responded with tear gas.

Now David Corchia, head of Concileo, a firm of moderators that has the newspapers Le Figaro and Libération as clients, told AFP: “As soon as you talk about Israel, it crystallises all passions, with up to 20,000 or 30,000 comments sometimes after an article, of which we will only let five to 10 per cent through.”

Thank you DP111, Wrath of Khan, M, Buck and many more who sent in material. More shortly.

  1. Kuwait court upholds 10-year jail term for Twitter user

Al Naqi was charged with insulting Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Prophet Mohammad

Kuwait City: Kuwait’s top court on Monday upheld a 10-year jail sentence for a Shiite Twitter user for insulting the Prophet Mohammad and his wife and companions.

Hamad Al Naqi, 24, was also charged with insulting Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and spreading false news that undermined Kuwait’s image abroad, the verdict said. The court’s ruling is final and can only be commuted by the ruler.

He has been in prison since his arrest in March 2012 for posting tweets deemed offensive to the Prophet Mohammad, his companions and Gulf leaders.

Al Naqi, a member of Kuwait’s Shiite community, denied the accusations, saying his Twitter account was hacked. He was first handed the jail term by the lower court in June 2012.

Human Rights Watch strongly criticised the sentence and urged authorities to immediately release him after the appeals court confirmed the sentence in October last year.

The New York-based rights watchdog said the ruling was another example of violations of the right to free speech in Kuwait.

During the past two years, Kuwaiti courts have given jail sentences to several online activists for various charges, mostly insulting the ruler through social networks.

  2. Philippine worker beheaded in Libya: Government

Suspected militiamen have beheaded a Philippine worker in Libya after singling him out because he was not a Muslim, the Philippine Foreign Department said Monday.

Department spokesman Charles Jose said this reinforced the government’s order to all Filipinos to evacuate the country because of the worsening security situation.

He told reporters the Filipino construction worker was kidnapped on July 15 and his beheaded remains were found in a hospital on July 20.

“The vehicle he was riding in was stopped in a checkpoint. There were three of them– a Libyan, a Pakistani and a Filipino — and he was allegedly singled out because he was non-Muslim,” said Jose.

The kidnappers had initially negotiated with the Filipino’s company for a $160,000 ransom but eventually “they received a call from the abductors on July 20 (that) referred them to a Benghazi hospital”, he added.

The beheaded body was found in the hospital in an advanced state of decomposition, indicating he may have been dead even while the negotiations were going on, Jose added.

He indicated that the killing prompted the Philippines on Sunday to order its estimated 13,000 nationals in Libya to leave.

“The threats to our Filipinos’ safety and security became more imminent. We would like to get them out of harm’s way because of this incident,” Jose added.

Filipinos can leave Libya by travelling by land to either Tunisia or Egypt, he added.

So far 207 Filipinos have registered for evacuation and will be brought back to Manila as soon as the Philippine embassy there completes their travel requirements, he said.

About 10 million Filipinos live and work abroad, many of them in the Middle East, in search of better-paying jobs. This has often placed them in delicate situations when violence breaks out in these countries.

On Saturday the foreign department ordered the 100 Filipinos living in Gaza to leave the besieged Palestinian territory as Israel presses its offensive.

  3. 1/ John Kerry: “Hamas has started this process of rocketing…” ‘Process of rocketing.’ Idiot. And there is no call for a perfect tense here: Hamas started it. Mangling the language in order to obscure obvious truths.

  5. The Hamas Interior Ministry has issued guidelines to Gaza social media users for reporting events and discussing them with outsiders:

  6. Isis militants ‘seize Iraq monastery and expel monks’ (BBC, July 21, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-28408926

“Islamist militants in Iraq are reported to have seized an ancient monastery near Mosul and expelled the monks. Local residents said monks at the Mar Behnam monastery were allowed to take only the clothes they were wearing.

The monastery, which dates from the 4th Century, is a major Christian landmark and a place of pilgrimage. Christians have fled Mosul after the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis) told them to convert to Islam, pay a tax or face death.

Isis has seized large parts of Syria and Iraq and said last month it was creating an Islamic caliphate. Mosul itself is now said to be empty of Christians.

The Mar Behnam monastery is run by the Syriac Catholic Church and is near the predominantly Christian town of Qaraqosh, to the south-east of Mosul….”

  7. Gaza conflict: France criticises ‘anti-Semitic’ riot (BBC, July 21, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-28402882

“French Prime Minister Manuel Valls has condemned “anti-Semitic” violence that broke out during a protest against Israel’s action in Gaza. Jewish-owned businesses and a synagogue were targeted in the suburb of Sarcelles, just outside Paris.

Shops were looted and 18 people were arrested as youths went on the rampage during Sunday’s protest, which had been banned by authorities. The mayor of Sarcelles said the Jewish community was in fear.

Such an outpouring of violence had never been seen in the suburb before, he said.

Roger Cukierman, head of the umbrella group Crif that represents French Jewish organisations, said Jews were not just afraid, they were anguished. “What’s happened in the past few days is terrible. They’re shouting ‘Death to the Jews’ and attacking synagogues. It’s completely out of control”, he said.

Pro-Palestinian rallies also took place at the weekend in London, Vienna and Berlin, where an Israeli tourist was attacked by demonstrators. Anti-Semitic slogans were chanted by some protesters in the German capital. Jewish community leaders have spoken of their shock at the “explosion of evil and violent hatred towards Jews”.

A week before the violence in Sarcelles, protesters had tried to storm two Paris synagogues, prompting the government to impose a ban on demonstrations in Paris linked to Israel’s ground operations in the Gaza Strip. At least 500 Palestinians and 20 Israelis have been killed.

Mr Valls said nothing could justify attacks on French synagogues or shops….”

  8. Nigeria’s Boko Haram ‘controls’ Damboa in Borno (BBC, July 21, 2014)

“Nigeria’s militant Islamists are in control of the key town of Damboa in north-eastern Nigeria, a local vigilante leader has told the BBC.

The vigilante force defending the town fled on Sunday, and Islamist group Boko Haram’s black flag is now flying over Damboa, he said.

At least 40 people were killed when Boko Haram attacked Damboa on Friday, the vigilante leader added….”

  9. Philippines: 17 Rebels, 1 Soldier Dead in Clashes (abcnews, July 21, 2014)
    http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/philippines-17-rebels-soldier-dead-clashes-24650379

“A Philippine military official says 17 Muslim rebels from a breakaway faction and a soldier have died in renewed clashes.

Military spokesman Col. Dickson Hermoso said fighters with the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement attacked army troops in two adjacent towns in the southern Maguindanao province.

Three other soldiers were wounded early Monday.

The rebels broke off from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the main rebel group which signed a new Muslim autonomy deal with the government in March. The breakaway rebels opposed the peace talks and took up arms for an independent Muslim homeland in the south of the predominantly Roman Catholic nation.”
