  1. Afghan election: Run-off vote held amid violence (BBC, June 14, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-27844674

“Millions of Afghans have cast their votes in a presidential run-off to elect a successor to Hamid Karzai, who has been in office since 2001. Taliban militants, who had threatened to disrupt the vote, launched low-level attacks in which at least 46 people were killed across the country.

More than seven million people turned out to vote, election officials said. Voters are choosing between former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah and ex-World Bank economist Ashraf Ghani.

This election will be the first time that power in Afghanistan has been democratically transferred. The Taliban had said they would target voting, and there were concerns that fraud could produce a disputed result.

The Afghan interior minister earlier said there had been 150 attacks. BBC reporters across the country said they had seen more violence than in the previous round, but most incidents were relatively low level.

Election commission chief Ahmad Yousef Nooristani said fewer than 200 of the 6,365 polling stations were unable to operate because of security concerns.

Of those who turned out to vote, 38% were women and 62% were men, he said…”

“A bomb attack targeting a weapons bazaar in eastern Syria close to the Iraqi border killed 30 “terrorists” on Saturday, state television reported. “A big explosion hits a terrorist arms market in Mayadeen, killing 30 terrorists and wounding dozens of others,” the television reported.

A rebel official from the town in Deir Ezzor province told AFP the blast killed at least 15 civilians in a street market. He said a car bomb was detonated by the jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), the same group which has spearheaded an offensive in neighbouring Iraq this week that has seen militants sweep down from second city Mosul toward Baghdad.”

Sunni clerics criticize Iraq’s Shiites call to arms (alarabiya, June 14, 2014)
    http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/2014/06/14/Sunni-clerics-criticize-Iraq-s-Shiites-call-to-arms-.html

“A union of Sunni Muslim clerics on Saturday criticized calls for Iraqi Shiites to fight a jihadist-led militant offensive in northern Iraq, which the body called a “Sunni revolution.”

The Doha-based International Union of Muslim Scholars said developments in Iraq were a “result of oppression and exclusion of people that wanted freedom,” in reference to the country’s minority Sunni Arab community.

The union, which is led by influential cleric Yusef al-Qaradawi, who is linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, denounced “sectarian fatwa edicts calling for arms among our Shiite brothers” insisting they would lead to “devastating sectarian war.”

“We urge our Shiite brothers in Iraq and elsewhere, and Sunnis, to avoid being the fuel for an awful sectarian war, and call on them to stand by their Sunni brothers to reach a viable solution,” it said…”
