Terrorism victims are celebrating a concrete victory in their decades-long quest to hold Iran accountable for its role in the 9/11 attacks and other horrific incidents.

They won the right last week to seize a $500 million Midtown office tower linked to Iran and are near a deal with the feds to distribute the assets of the property, lawyers said.

Militants in a second vehicle attacked the HQ with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic weapons, they said. Al-Qaeda-linked groups have launched a string of attacks on Yemeni army posts in the past two years.

Hospital officials said at least three assailants also died in the subsequent shootout. A 10-year-old boy was also among the civilian casualties….”

  3. Indonesian ‘blood money’ saves maid from Saudi execution

Indonesia has agreed to pay $1.9 million to stop the impending execution of an Indonesian maid on death row in Saudi Arabia for murder, a minister said Thursday.

Satinah Binti Jumadi Ahmad was sentenced to death in 2011 for murdering her employer’s wife and stealing money. She was due to be beheaded in the coming days.

Her case has attracted huge media attention in Indonesia and there was a campaign in recent weeks to stop the execution from going ahead.

Under Islamic sharia law followed in Saudi Arabia, the family of a victim can settle for “blood money” instead of an execution.

The family demanded seven million riyal ($1.9 million) but contributions from businesses and a group representing companies that send migrant workers abroad only managed to raise four million.

Indonesian Security Minister Djoko Suyanto said Thursday that the government had agreed to provide the remaining three million.

  8. MONTREAL – March 03 2014 Students flood downtown Montreal to protest austerity measures

MONTREAL — Six people were arrested by Montreal police on Thursday after thousands of student demonstrators flooded into downtown streets to oppose austerity measures in the last provincial budget.

A passerby in his 50s was also injured when he was hit by a projectile thrown during the march, police said.

The demonstration was organized by student group ASSE, which was one of the drivers of protests in 2012 against tuition-fee increases brought in by the government of then premier Jean Charest.

The unrest caused by the regular marches then are considered to be one of the factors that led to Charest’s defeat in the election that fall which brought in Pauline Marois’ minority Parti Quebecois government.

Thursday’s protest came days before Quebecers go to the polls and this time Marois was visibly targeted with a number of placards.

Marois and the PQ had supported student protests in 2012 and she had even marched in a demonstration, banging a pot. PQ members also wore the red square symbol of the student movement during the protests.

However, many students were dissatisfied with Marois’ solution of lowering the proposed tuition fee increases instead of cancelling them altogether.

  10. China, Turkey Now Tussling for 400 Mystery Men, Women and Children Captive in Thailand

PHUKET: A tug-of-war is taking place between Turkey and China with the winner claiming 400 mysterious travellers, most of whom are children, now being held captive in Thailand.

According to human rights groups, the lives of all 400 will be at stake if China wins the tug-of-war. For now, Thailand is holding the would-be refugees that both Turkey and China appear to want.

The mystery travellers, who arrived in Thailand in three groups last month with the assistance of human traffickers, claim to possess Turkish extraction. Turkey and Australia have been named as their preferred destinations.

But these people – mostly young families – are suspected of belonging to China’s persecuted Uighur minority. If they are returned to China, their fate is bleak, say the human rights groups.

Today there were dramatic developments following a report published in the Financial Times from Beijing that China wants the men, women and children returned there as fast as possible.

Details of their names and fingerprints have already been collected and sent to Ankara. It is not known whether Beijing has also been involved in that process, but it appears unlikely.

Turkey showed the most immediate interest in the group, dispatching five envoys last month to southern Thailand when the first 220 mysterious arrivals were found in the jungle.

Two more large groups have since been detected and apprehended.

  12. China presses Thailand to return Uighur refugees

But human rights groups, the US, Europe and the UN are urging the Thai government not to send the large group of migrants, including more than 60 children, back to China for fear they will face severe punishment.

[…]Many of the 424 Uighurs being held in Thailand have claimed to be Turkish in order to deny Chinese officials access to them and to facilitate their migration to Turkey or other countries that agree to take them.

[…]Human rights groups say the Uighurs’ best chance of avoiding repatriation to China will be if Turkey agrees to claim them as its citizens and flies them back to Ankara.

[…]The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has provided blankets and some personal hygiene items for the refugees in Thailand but has not had any access to the group in Malaysia.

“We’re urging the Thai government to allow these people to stay while their claims are assessed by the Turkish authorities and we insist they should eventually be allowed to go wherever they want to,” said Vivian Tan, a Bangkok-based spokesperson for UNHCR.
