1. Nigeria attacks: 100 killed in attacks on villages in Kaduna

At least 100 villagers have been killed in Nigeria’s central Kaduna state in attacks linked to disputes between ethnic groups, officials say. Heavily armed men entered three villages in the Kaura district in the south of the state. It is not clear who was behind the attacks, but residents blame members of the mainly Muslim Fulani tribe. Central Nigeria has often witnessed violence stemming from disputes over land and religion.

Thousands of people have been killed in recent years in violence blamed on semi-nomadic Fulani herdsmen attacking Christian farmers

(Once again the BBC desperately attempts to make it appear as if there is equal blame on all sides, and not nomadic devout muslims attempting to murder, rape, steal and pillage the goods and women of Christian and non-muslim peoples, as Islamic scripture allows and frequently demands)

2. Crimea votes in favor of secession, U.S. rejects

(Video at source is pointless and uninformative. And whatever else one can say about this referendum, it is likely no more dishonest than the European Union ones attempting to ratify their constitution as a political entity)

State-owned media in Moscow has reported that the Crimean peninsula voted overwhelmingly in favor of succeeding from Ukraine and becoming part of Russia on Sunday.

Exit polls announced on Russian television claimed 93 percent of voters who turned out for Sunday’s referendum voted for unification with Russia, according to a report posted Sunday afternoon on the website of the international satellite network Russia Today.

3. Gunmen Storm Crimea Hotel Full of Reporters on Eve of Referendum

(Interesting that Time Magazine felt this was worth reporting, yet few other American media did)

A day before the breakaway leaders of Crimea stage a referendum on their secession from Ukraine, roughly two dozen commandos took over a major hotel on Saturday night in the Crimean capital of Simferopol, where dozens of journalists — including a TIME correspondent — are staying.

Crimea’s police force said it was a training operation. The office of its separatist leader said it was a hunt for a cache of weapons. The local defense ministry said it was part of an “information war” with the Ukrainian government. But whatever it was, it resulted in roughly two dozen commandos taking over a major hotel on Saturday night in the Crimean capital of Simferopol.

4. Karzai says Afghanistan doesn’t need US troops

March 15: Afghan President Hamid Karzai arrives at an opening session at the parliament house in Kabul. (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan –  In his final address to Afghanistan’s parliament Saturday, President Hamid Karzai told the United States its soldiers can leave at the end of the year because his military, which already protects 93 percent of the country, was ready to take over entirely.

He reiterated his stance that he would not sign a pact with the United States that would provide for a residual force of U.S. troops to remain behind after the final withdrawal, unless peace could first be established.

5. More than 100 Christians killed in village attacks blamed on Muslim herders in Nigeria

Chenshyi village chief Nuhu Moses said Sunday that gunmen killed more than 50 people including the pastor’s wife and children. He said the entire village in the southern part of Kaduna state was destroyed.

Thank you Wrath of Khan, Fjordman, and all who sent in material. More to come. Crimea is interesting. Certainly would make an interesting comparison with the thoroughly dishonest EU referenda held over important issues of sovereignty with European nations, most of which had their home rule taken from them without even the decency of a show-referendum like Ireland got.

Hopefully someone will write up a comparison.

  1. Karzai and his whole clan should be barred from entering any western country. When his government falls and he flees, he’ll end up in a Gulf state with his ill gotten billions

  2. “Israel upgrades Apache helicopters after U.S. blocked their modernization”

TEL AVIV — Israel, despite opposition from the Obama administration, has managed to upgrade its fleet of attack helicopters.
Military sources said the Israel Air Force has overseen a project to modernize its AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopters.
The sources said the Air Force was equipping the Apaches with two new electronic warfare systems developed in the Jewish state.

[…] The upgrade has been developed amid the U.S. refusal to modernize Israel’s Apache fleet, employed in attacks on the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.
The sources said the administration of President Barack Obama blocked Israeli efforts to modernize the Apaches or purchase new helicopters from Boeing.
The new Israeli systems were cited by the official magazine of the Air Force. The sources said the sensors underwent trials in early 2014 and would be integrated on the Apaches later this year.

  3. #2

Good point, Eeyore, and quite true. When I see those EU dictators blatantly trying to take over the world in a slow socialist coup, then I change the channel to see John Kerry lying his ridiculous horse face off every time he opens his always-wrong mouth, I can’t imagine where we get off calling the Russians illegitimate – especially when they have a landslide referendum under their belts. The United States is supporting and arming al Qaeda in Syria, and we’re supposed to be all mad at the Russians for contravening the fine points of Ukrainian constitutional law…

  4. I’ll punt to Putin, too Chris.

Having just read the article Eeyore linked to on the Crimean slave trade, I’ll go with the Russians all the way. The only industry on that fertile, resource-rich peninsula was the slave trade. No significant cultivation of the land, nothing, just a massive slave entrepôt. That horror stopped abruptly after Catherine the Great annexed it.

  5. Suicide car bomb kills two in Lebanon (CNN, March 17, 2014)
    http://edition.cnn.com/2014/03/16/world/meast/lebanon-suicide-car-bomb/index.html

“A suicide bomb explosion killed two people and injured 14 on a highway near Nabi Uthman in Lebanon’s Bekaa valley, according to Lebanon’s official news agency NNA.

The suicide bomber was speeding and raised the suspicion of a number of young men, NNA reports. When he stopped, the bomb exploded.

A group called “Free Sunni Brigade in Baalbek” was the first to claim responsibility for the bombing on Twitter.

The Al-Nusra Front in Lebanon, an offshoot of the Syrian rebel group, also claimed on Twitter that is was responsible for the suicide attack and called the “Free Sunni Brigade” a fraud.

The Free Sunni Brigade also addressed the Lebanese Army and Hezbollah saying, “Be prepared for the battle of Yabroud inside Lebanon!”

Hezbollah fighters have been helping the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in that country’s civil war….”

  6. Can anyone imagine the fuss the USA would be making if Russia had a dozen bases all around the America, and within 30 mts flight time of Washington.

What is amazing is that Russia has tolerated NATO approaching its borders, in Poland, Latvia etc. NATO has now gone one step too far. If the US backed coup Ukraine had got away with it, the new authorities would have joined NATO, then revoked the treaty allowing Russia to maintain a naval base in Crimea. NATO would then move in.

I’m astonished that Russia has allowed NATO to get away with this type of nonsense. They should have upped the ante when Poland applied to join NATO. What can NATO do in response? In any conflict with Russia, Russians can always raise the ante, and we will have to blink.

  7. #3 It achieved its purpose, it has scared the reporters into not reporting about the raid and thus showing they are at least partially under Russian Control.

DP111 Russia tolerated NATO because they had no other choice, after the fall of the USSR (not communism is still alive and well) the Eastern European nations joined NATO to prevent Russia from once again conquering them. between 1945 and the fall of the USSR they were under the complete control of the Soviet Union and know first hand what evil it was.

Your statement shows you lack of historical knowledge and your acceptance of the leftist idea that the US wants to conquer the world. You need to study history from some sources that aren’t controlled by the left so you can learn the facts and not the propaganda of the left.
