3. Russian army launches operation outside Crimea

The Ukrainian foreign ministry has said it “reserves the right to use all necessary measures to stop the military invasion by Russia” after 80 Russian soldiers, four helicopter gunships, and three armoured vehicles seized the village of Strilkove, in the Kherson region, next to Crimea, on Saturday.

5. Behind the Headlines: Who Are the Crimean Tatars?

“The Ottomans wanted slaves, and the Crimean Tatars provided them from the steppes of Ukraine and southern Russia—with the help of raiding Nogai Tatars and, until the 15th century, with the collaboration of Genoese merchants who shipped them off from the Crimean port town of Feodosia. One translation of a Ukrainian folk song reads:

The ?res are burning behind the river—

The Tatars are dividing their captives.

Our village is burnt

And our property plundered.”

6. Masked gunmen with silenced AK47s have stormed hotels in Ukraine beyond Crimea.

I will post links to twitter feeds from within the hotels as I find them but this link from 9 minutes ago at Huff Post seems to cover some of it. The link I was reading from is a Guardian live link.

  1. Ten dead in Syria-linked clashes in Lebanon’s Tripoli

Ten people have been killed in 48 hours of clashes in Lebanon’s northern town of Tripoli linked to the conflict in neighboring Syria, a security source told AFP on Saturday.

The violence between two districts of the city caused local schools to close and cut traffic flow in the city to a trickle, an AFP correspondent said.

The clashes, which have also injured 50 people, pit the Alawite district of Jabal Mohsen against the neighboring Sunni quarter of Bab al-Tebbaneh.

The latest fighting broke out on Thursday after a Sunni man was killed by unknown gunmen on a motorbike in central Tripoli.

But tensions between the districts have run high for decades,</b< only increasing with the outbreak of the conflict in Syria, where Alawite President Bashar al-Assad faces a Sunni-dominated uprising.

On Saturday, two people were killed by snipers and another three succumbed to injuries sustained earlier in the clashes, the source said, raising the toll since Thursday to 10.

The Lebanese army has deployed in the city, arresting several people overnight and responding to sources of fire.

Three soldiers are also reported to have been wounded on Saturday.

The war in Syria has deepened existing sectarian and political tensions in Lebanon, particularly between supporters of the Shiite movement Hezbollah, an Assad ally, and Sunni backers of former prime minister Saad Hariri who support the uprising.

  4. Hello there…..its me again…….Don Laird…

Look to the treason and sedition of the president of the United States of America, Barack Obama.

Look to the cataclysmic political shifts in the Ukraine with wolves now on their doorsteps, regardless of your political sentiments.

Look to the madness in Syria as murderers drag entire sleeping families from their beds.

Look to the mass graves dug and filled ten thousand time over for the love of Dear Leaders like Kim Il Jung, Mao and Pol Pot.

Look……….and be educated as these, all of these and so many other examples are the screaming voices of reason and their volumes so truthfully spoken to the ownership of weapons by individual citizens.

I recommend that all persons do whatever they can to secure a basic form of firearm and ammunition and as well, become proficient in its use, care and storage.

………or not……..the choice is yours…….but remember the legacy of socialism and its lunatic brother, communism…….the cancerous madness of these tow reflected in the rotting corpses of over 170 million souls, rendered rotting over the last 80 years………and by the likes of Che Guevara, an animal and a monster whose sexual excitation grew exponentially as he executed his victims.

Pacifism and conscientious objection are the makers of tear stained headstones……..get involved, fight back, take no quarter, give no quarter, refuse to live and die on your knees and with your dying breath, spit in the faces of your enemies and those who would enslave you and your loved ones.

  5. Don, I’ll underscore your admonition, “Look……….and be educated…”

Keep informed by means of sources you can trust. Don’t wait till the IED lands in your neighborhood, together with martial law, declared or de facto.

  6. #s 3 and 4 are to be expected, Putin is rebuilding the Russian Empire/Soviet Union and with the US busy disarming he has a free hand to do what he wants.

#5 Don’t forget that Russia tolerated the Cossacks for centuries because they were a hard fighting group that was between Russia and the Tatars, I can’t remember their names but I can remember reading several books (one of which was a group of related short stories) about the cossacks and the Tatars. One reason I say tolerated the Cossacks is that one of the stories about where the Cossacks came from is that they were (at least partially) runaway serfs that wanted freedom and were willing to fight for it.

#6 is troubling but until we know more about who they are and what they are doing/looking for we will have to withhold judgement.

  7. I’m guessing, but the word “cossack” may mean “border”. So these brutes were defenders of the borders for the Czars. Keep the Tartar slavers out.

  8. That they were. The only title of one of the books that I can remember was Taras Bulba which was about the Cassocks in Poland, it was made into a good movie starting Yul Brenner and Tony Curtis.
