Police investigating the backgrounds of all 239 people aboard the missing Malaysia Airlines flight are paying “special attention” to a 35 year-old Chinese Uighur man who undertook flight simulation training, according to a report in a leading Malay language newspaper in Kuala Lumpur.

The Uighurs Muslim ethnic minority group from the north-western Chinese province of Xinjiang have been battling for independence since they were brought under Chinese control in 1949, claiming they are oppressed by China’s authoritarian government and face religious restrictions and widespread discrimination.

5. Russians enter town north of Crimea, say Ukrainians

(Video at link. Well worth it)

KHERSON, Ukraine –  Ukrainians in the Kherson province just north of Crimea say Russian operatives have moved into the territory, an incursion which, if true, could show Vladimir Putin has more than just the Black Sea peninsula in his sights.

Residents of the village of Chonhar, in the Kherson region of Ukraine, say Russian troops showed up last week in armored personnel carriers, prompting the dispatch of Ukrainian troops and a standoff.  The suspected Russian troops pulled back and established a checkpoint on a major road leading north from the Crimean capital of Simferopol.

6. At last someone had the courage to quantify some of the more uncomfortable facts of the social changes brought about by easy contraception.

The comments are interesting at the YT channel where this lives. One person threatened to force the video down if they didn’t take it down because he says its BS. While not offering the slightest evidence to counter it of course. I accused him of being an Obama voter.

Thank you M, Fjordman, Richard, and all. More to come.

  1. #5 Putin has the entire nation of Ukraine in his sights, just as he has all other former USSR states in his sights, this is why Poland wants a lot of US troops stationed in Poland.

#6 The vast majority of people commenting on youtube seem to be incapable of thinking about what was said in the video and instead are reacting with programed far left propaganda.

  3. March 13 2014 -Egypt summons European envoys over human rights statement

Egypt’s foreign affairs ministry has summoned the envoys of European countries that sent a joint statement to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Friday condemning Egypt’s recent crackdown on demonstrators and political dissent.

The statement, whose signatories included the UK, France, Germany, Japan, Turkey, the US and 21 other European countries, voiced concern about human rights violations in Egypt including “restrictions on the rights to peaceful assembly, expression and association, and about the disproportionate use of lethal force by security forces against demonstrators.”

Hatem Seif El-Nasr, Egypt’s assistant foreign minister for European affairs, said that the summoned ambassadors will be presented with a strongly worded objection for signing the statement, which he said contained many errors and ignored the progress Egypt has made in its democratic transition, Al-Ahram’s Arabic news website reported on Thursday.

The ambassadors will also be warned that bilateral relations between their respective countries and Egypt will be damaged if they do not take action to “correct” their political stance, tantamount to what he claimed was international interference in Egypt’s internal affairs.

El-Nasr said that many Egyptians are beginning to have doubts about the political stance of European countries with regards to Egypt and that such countries should have instead lent their support for Egypt’s transitional roadmap.

He added that Egypt has democratic mechanisms to safeguard human rights and basic freedoms.

Similar concerns were raised by European countries during the EU Foreign Affairs Council in February, to which Egypt objected.

The EU publicly recognised Egypt’s transitional government after the ouster of president Mohamed Morsi, which drew criticism from the Muslim Brotherhood, who accused the EU of supporting a coup.

Last week’s joint statement to the UNHRC also condemned the recent spate of terrorist attacks against Egypt’s army and police.

  4. Thanks for posting the youtube video. It explains the rise of what I call the Mommies with Benefits (MwBs). MwBs generally shack up with unemployed/underemployed man-boy loafers who spend more time playing video games than working while she works to pay the bulk of the bills, rent and groceries just like a single mommy AND gives benefits in bed. This is win win for the man-boy since he can dump her for the next girl stupid enough to be his MwB while the former MwB will probably be left raising an actual baby.

  6. Saudi Arabia bans anyone from naming their children Linda (dailymail, March 13, 2014)
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2580248/Saudi-Arabia-bans-naming-children-Linda.html
“Saudi Arabia has issued a list of 50 names new parents are banned from giving their children, including Linda, Lauren, Sandy and Amir.

The Arab nation’s interior ministry justified the ban by saying the names either contradicted the culture or religion of the kingdom, or were foreign, or ‘inappropriate’.

Among the others are Alice, Elaine and Maya and Binyamin, the Arabic name for Benjamin.

The names fit into at least three categories: those that offend perceived religious sensibilities, those that are affiliated to royalty and those that are of non-Arabic or non-Islamic origin, Gulf News reported.

A number of other names appear that do not necessarily fit into any category and it is therefore unclear as to why they would have been banned.

Names such as Abdul Naser and Binyamin are not found to be particularly offensive to Muslims….”

  7. Nigeria attack: Scores killed in Katsina state (BBC, March 12, 2014)
    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-26562931

“At least 69 people have been killed in an attack on villages in Katsina state, north-western Nigeria, officials and witnesses say.

Witnesses say the attackers rode motorcycles into villages in broad daylight and killed whoever they found.

The assailants appear to have been ethnic Fulani cattle herders who have a history of tension with local farmers.

Police say the attack is not linked to Islamist militant group Boko Haram, which is mainly active further east.

The militants are based in Borno state.

“The victims include men, women and children. Rescue teams are still combing nearby bushes [to] search for more bodies,” state police chief Hurdi Mohammed told the AFP news agency….”

  8. China warns of dangerous Russia sanctions ‘spiral’

China’s top envoy to Germany has warned the West against punishing Russia with sanctions for its intervention in Ukraine, saying such measures could lead to a dangerous chain reaction that would be difficult to control.

In an interview with Reuters days before the European Union is threatening to impose its first sanctions on Russia since the Cold War, ambassador Shi Mingde issued the strongest warning against such measures by any top Chinese official to date.

“We don’t see any point in sanctions,” Shi said. “Sanctions could lead to retaliatory action, and that would trigger a spiral with unforeseeable consequences. We don’t want this.”

[…]Shi urged patience, saying the door for talks should remain open even after a referendum on Sunday in which Ukraine’s southern region of Crimea could vote to secede and join Russia. Merkel and other western leaders have denounced the referendum as illegal and demanded that it be canceled.

“We still see a chance to avoid an escalation. The door to talks is still open. We should use this possibility, also after the referendum,” Shi said.

[…]Chinese President Xi Jinping, who will visit Berlin and other European capitals later this month, held separate phone calls on the Ukraine crisis with Merkel and U.S. President Barack Obama earlier this week.

If the West’s confrontation with Russia over Ukraine worsens in the coming weeks, Xi’s visit, the first by a Chinese president to Germany in eight years, risks being overshadowed by the crisis.

Before coming to Berlin, Xi is due to attend a nuclear security summit in the Netherlands which Obama, Merkel and dozens of other world leaders will attend. He is also due to visit Paris and Brussels.

  9. Canada announces $220M in aid to Ukraine

Canada will contribute $220 million to Ukraine as part of a broader international aid effort to help “restore economic, social and political stability during” its period of transition.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird announced Thursday a $200 million loan and another $20 million in “technical assistance,” all to help stabilize Ukraine’s economy amidst the ongoing crisis in that country.

The money is to be administered through the International Monetary Fund as part of a larger aid package.

Another $900,000 will be provided to help stabilize Ukraine’s National Bank.

“Canada strongly supports the will of the Ukrainian people who have spoken out courageously in calling for a free and democratic Ukraine,” Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in a statement.

  10. $3 Billion for Ukraine to Go Straight to…Russia

As Western leaders prepare a bailout package for embattled Ukraine, they face a startling irony: Thanks to the almost bizarre structure of a bond deal between Ukraine and Russia, billions of those dollars are almost certain to go directly into the coffers of the Putin government.

As CNBC has reported, some aid money is bound to go into Russia as a result of energy trade and other economic factors. But the situation is actually much more acute than just that: An existing agreement between the two countries makes an immediate, direct transfer from Ukraine to Russia legally enforceable.

In December, Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to lend Ukraine $15 billion. Few details were released at the time, except that Ukraine would issue bonds and Russia would buy them in installments through 2014.

  11. Ukraine – Donetsk – At least 1 killed, 10 seriously injured in east Ukraine clashes – reports

At least one person died and 10 were taken to hospitals with injuries following clashes between rival rallies in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk. Reports said that eggs, fireworks and smoke grenades were used in the unrest.

Tensions erupted in the Ukrainian industrial center of Donetsk on Thursday, where the Russian-speaking population has been rallying in support of creating an eastern Ukrainian autonomy and against the decisions of the coup-imposed government in Kiev.

A rally of Ukraine’s integrity supporters was taking place in Donetsk at the same time and place as anti-government protest.

According to local media reports pro-Maidan activists started provoking the pro-Russian crowd, by shouting far-right slogans “Glory to Ukraine” and “Glory to heroes”, loudly demanding the respect of Ukrainian territorial sovereignty.

Clashes between the rival rallies reportedly erupted after a crowd of demonstrators broke through a police cordon separating the crowds. Law enforcers were trying to take provocateurs away in police buses.

  13. March 13 2014 – Bulgaria begins building fence on Turkey border

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AA) – Bulgaria began on Wednesday building a fence on its border with Turkey to end illegal border crossings into the country.

The idea of building of a 30-kilometer (18 mile) wire fence has gained traction since late last year due to the government’s concerns over the Syrian refugee influx.

A recent activity report released by Bulgaria’s Defense Ministry said 87 military personnel began to put the wire fence on parts of the 30 km long route that was cleared and prepared for the building work.

The Bulgarian Socialist Party government in late 2013 ordered works for the fence in the mountainous region of Elhovo on the Turkish border, one of the areas that are the most prone to illegal crossings.

The government last December floated the idea of extending the fence to 50 kilometers.

[…]The project has also drawn criticism from the European Union and the United Nations in that it would be considered a measure for limiting the access of refugees to Bulgaria, which violates international law on refugees.

“Introducing barriers, like fences or other deterrents, may lead people to undertake more dangerous crossings and further place refugees at the mercy of smugglers,” said Adrian Edwards, spokesperson for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in November.

  14. EU – Bulgaria urged to halt border fence plan after Syrian influx

Sofia. Bulgaria should immediately halt plans to build a $6.7 million fence along its border with Turkey, a Bulgarian human rights lawyer said, voicing shame over her country’s treatment of thousands of Syrians seeking asylum, the Thomas Reuters Foundation reported.

Refugee expert Iliana Savova said a dramatic fall in the number of Syrians crossing into Bulgaria, following the dispatch of 1,500 additional police to the border, suggested guards were pushing asylum seekers back into Turkey in violation of international refugee law.
“I feel ashamed… And shame is even a very weak word to describe how I felt in the beginning when I saw the way these people were treated and dumped in abandoned buildings with nothing – no heating, no electricity, no running water, no medical help,” said Savova, director of the refugee unit for the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee, the country’s biggest rights watchdog.

Thamks for the great article. I don’t know enough to make heads or tails, the oligarchs on both sides are abhorrent. Lots more to read.

  16. #6: Speaking as a single mother, maybe not all women want to get married? Maybe not all women ‘put a price on sex’ – in other words, we ain’t selling our bodies.
Back before oral contraception, women were required to hand over their lives to a male in order to have children. Far too many societies still put a price on women’s virginity. Thank you, but no thank you.
    I much prefer my freedom.
