Videos and news items on Russia and Ukraine

Please take note. This is a bunch of links that seem authentic to me from what I can tell at the moment. But this is what you might call, ‘The Fog of Propaganda’ and its quite difficult to make sense out of some things.

1. ‘Leaked call’ that indicates the EU was aware of Western friendly efforts to set up snipers to randomly kill people from roof tops.

I am told the above is very reliable. It’s offically confirmed by the Estonian FM who is speaking. He ‘regrets the leak’, but not the fact that the Union is supporting the forces of violence.
DPP is already demanding an official investigation.

3. Flashback: Senator Obama pushed bill that helped destroy more than 15,000 TONS of ammunition, 400,000 small arms and 1,000 anti-aircraft missiles in Ukraine

I will post more items here as they appear. Also related links may appear in the comments. I would recommend checking the comments under this post periodically.

  1. . Flashback: Senator Obama pushed bill that helped destroy more than 15,000 TONS of ammunition, 400,000 small arms and 1,000 anti-aircraft missiles in Ukraine

What are those amounts of weapons doing so near the Russians? The Russians have the right to be concerned,

  2. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov (speaking Russian):

“I just want to say briefly that we’ve just held a meeting with John Kerry about the situation in Ukraine, about the actions our partners have attempted to undertake regarding the OSCE, Russia-NATO Council, [and] in other international organizations; actions which don’t help to create an atmosphere of dialogue and constructive cooperation.

John Kerry admitted that this atmosphere has to be created; that under the conditions of threats and ultimatums it’s very hard to work on fair agreements aimed at helping the Ukranian people stabilize the situation.

We agreed that it’s necessary to help the Ukrainians to realize those agreements which were achieved on February 21.

Right now we are heading to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs where other members of this process, including the Foreign Ministers of France, Poland, Germany, who countersigned and avouched the signing of this agreement on February 21 in Kiev, are awaiting us. Thank you.”

  3. UKRAINE – Donetsk divided as pro-Russia activists recapture govt building

Pro-Russia activists recaptured the administrative headquarters of the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk and flew the Russian flag from its roof, just hours after Ukrainian authorities managed to take back the building.

However, there remains pro-Kiev supporters in the region as around 5,000 activists gathered to chant “Down with Putin! Donetsk is Ukraine!” in the city’s central square.

  4. If obuma supports a group it is sure to be the one trying to destroy democracy. Finally people are waking up, at least I hope so! The eu are also complicit in this tragedy and I am sure that the eu people are beginning to see them as Marxists . It is a sad day when we root for a KGB leader but that is what Europe and the USA has created.

  5. re: Estonian FM Urmas Paet’s phone call & snipers, who can know who organised the snipers – as they killed both Ukraine Police and protesters. It is as likely to be Russian black ops as anything else – setting up a situation in which Russia ‘needed’ to step in.

  6. Murad the munitions were left over from the USSR, Russia put them there.

HKtony you got that right the left has placed us in the position that Putin is appearing to be the only hope the west has, and that scares me.

Mohammed Wazaterd it will be decades before we learn what really happened in Ukraine, and then we will only learn what happened if we can remove the left from power in Europe and the US.

  7. How the Ukraine crisis ends

    By Henry A. Kissinger,

Henry A. Kissinger was secretary of state from 1973 to 1977.

Public discussion on Ukraine is all about confrontation. But do we know where we are going? In my life, I have seen four wars begun with great enthusiasm and public support, all of which we did not know how to end and from three of which we withdrew unilaterally. The test of policy is how it ends, not how it begins.

Far too often the Ukrainian issue is posed as a showdown: whether Ukraine joins the East or the West. But if Ukraine is to survive and thrive, it must not be either side’s outpost against the other — it should function as a bridge between them.

Russia must accept that to try to force Ukraine into a satellite status, and thereby move Russia’s borders again, would doom Moscow to repeat its history of self-fulfilling cycles of reciprocal pressures with Europe and the United States.

The West must understand that, to Russia, Ukraine can never be just a foreign country. Russian history began in what was called Kievan-Rus. The Russian religion spread from there. Ukraine has been part of Russia for centuries, and their histories were intertwined before then. Some of the most important battles for Russian freedom, starting with the Battle of Poltava in 1709 , were fought on Ukrainian soil. The Black Sea Fleet — Russia’s means of projecting power in the Mediterranean — is based by long-term lease in Sevastopol, in Crimea. Even such famed dissidents as Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and Joseph Brodsky insisted that Ukraine was an integral part of Russian history and, indeed, of Russia.

The European Union must recognize that its bureaucratic dilatoriness and subordination of the strategic element to domestic politics in negotiating Ukraine’s relationship to Europe contributed to turning a negotiation into a crisis

  9. Ukraine crisis: US sends F-16 fighter jets to Poland

US sends 12 F-16 fighter jets to Poland for training exercise as Washington imposes first sanctions on Russians –

The jets will arrive at the Lask base, in central Poland, on Monday, the online versions of the Gazeta Wyborcza and Rzeczpospolita newspapers reported. A Polish defence ministry spokesman said he could not confirm the reports.

The Pentagon said on Wednesday it would intensify defence training with Poland in the light of the crisis in neighbouring Ukraine.

Rome – Italy – Silvio Berlusconi, an old friend of Vladimir Putin’s, met with the US ambassador to Italy on Wednesday to warn America against isolating Russia, Italian daily Il Messaggero reported today. America, added the former Italian prime minister, had done its best work in foreign policy when it involved the Kremlin, the paper wrote.

A spokesman for the US embassy in Rome confirmed that ambassador John Phillips had met Berlusconi, but declined to reveal what was discussed.

Il Messaggero reported that Berlusconi had recently spoken to Putin, who had “complained” that the US and Europe had not respected the Feb 21 deal signed to hold elections in Ukraine.

As revealed by the Wikileaks cables, the US government has had its suspicions about Berlusconi’s ties to Putin.

The then ambassador to Rome, Ronald Spogli, in a series of cables in 2008-9 called Berlusconi a “mouthpiece” for Putin, and US officials reported suspicions – later denied by Berlusconi – that he had shared business interests with Putin. “Berlusconi admires Putin’s macho, decisive and authoritarian governing style, which the Italian PM believes matches his own,” wrote Spogli in a leaked cable.

  10. Ukraine: Crimean parliament votes to join Russia

Crimean parliament adopted a decision on joining the Autonomous Republic of Crimea to Russia in Simferopol on Thursday. 78 MPs said yes on joining Russia, while 8 abstained from voting.

Vladimir Konstantinov, parliament speaker for Ukraine’s Autonomous Republic of Crimea, spoke to the press and said that the decision will still have be approved by a referendum, which will be held in 10 days time.

During the referendum, people will be asked: “Are you for the Autonomy Republic of Crimea to enter Russia, or are you for the Autonomous Republic of Crimea to get the authority of 1992 and remain in Ukraine?”

The Crimean parliament also addressed President Vladimir Putin and the Russian Federal Assembly with a proposal to initiate the procedure of Crimea’s joining Russia as a subject of the Russian Federation.

Chairman of the Supreme Council of Crimea Vladimir Konstantinov said that the decision of the Supreme council should be approved during the referendum scheduled for March 16.

  11. Ukraine PM: Crimea parliament’s vote ‘illegitimate’

Ukraine interim premier Arseniy Yatsenyuk on Thursday dubbed as “illegitimate” a request by the local parliament in Crimea to become part of Russia.

  12. Obama says Crimea referendum would violate international law

President Barack Obama said that a proposed referendum in Crimea to join Russia would violate international law and said U.S. sanctions were aimed at punishing Moscow for its intervention in Ukraine.

  13. Crimea will be part of Russia Deputy PM

First Deputy Prime Minister of Crimea, Rustam Temirgaliev, says that he is confident that the region will be part of the Russian Federation “in a few days”.

Speaking to the BBC’s World Affairs editor John Simpson, he said that he was confident that up to 75% of Crimean citizens would support such a move.

MPs in Crimea have asked Moscow to allow the southern Ukrainian region to become part of the Russian Federation. There will be a referendum to ratify the parliament decision on 16 March.

  14. Europe fears gas shortages if Russia cuts off Ukraine

European Union countries such as Poland and Greece are worried they may face gas shortages and economic damage if Russia stops pumping the fuel to Ukraine, with Kiev facing a Friday deadline to pay Moscow a $2 billion energy bill.

EU authorities on Monday convened an urgent session of the bloc’s Gas Coordination Group, set up following previous energy disputes between Moscow and Kiev, to assess contingencies “in case a major disruption takes place” following Russia’s seizure of Ukraine’s Crimea region, a document seen by Reuters shows.

Despite extreme tension between Moscow and Kiev’s new pro-Western government, Russian gas giant Gazprom has so far maintained supplies to Ukraine. The former Soviet republic is strategically important to Moscow as the main gas transit route to the European Union, Russia’s biggest customer.

But Russia has threatened to remove the discount Ukraine gets on the gas it receives for itself, and Kiev is up against a March 7 deadline to pay an outstanding gas bill.

    Debt-laden Greece is particularly worried.

“A disruption from Ukraine is the worst scenario for Greece,” its energy experts said in input to the meeting, adding that liquefied natural gas (LNG) capacity stood at 70 percent full and its next delivery was expected on March 14.

  15. Kerry says ‘Crimea is Ukraine’ after lawmakers vote to join Russia

Rome — US Secretary of State John Kerry insisted Thursday that “Crimea is Ukraine”, after pro-Moscow lawmakers on the tense peninsula voted to have their region become part of Russia.

“Crimea is part of the Ukraine. Crimea is Ukraine. We support the territorial integrity of Ukraine, and the government of Ukraine needs to be involved in any decision” on whether the peninsula would split off, he told journalists in Rome.

“It’s my understanding that the constitution of Ukraine requires an all-Ukraine referendum. Every part of Ukraine, all Ukrainians, would have to be part of a referendum,” he said.

His comments came after US President Barack Obama warned that a referendum in Crimea on joining Russia would violate Ukrainian sovereignty and international law.

  16. March 07 2014 – OSCE observers blocked from Crimea

Armed men at a checkpoint flying the Russian flag have blocked OSCE observers from entering Ukraine’s flashpoint Crimean peninsula for a second day.

[…]The convoy of vehicles – led by a police car, followed by two buses carrying the observers and about 50 cars waving Ukrainian flags and honking their horns – had arrived from the city of Kherson where the team had spent the night.

After they were stopped, a crowd of people emerged from the cars and waved Ukrainian flags, chanting “Crimea is Ukraine!”

“We don’t want Ukraine to be split, the OSCE is able to negotiate, we want a decision to be made peacefully,” said one of the demonstrators, 55-year-old Lyudmila Korbec.

There are only two main roads leading into Crimea from the rest of Ukraine, one crossing the narrow Isthmus of Perekop in the west and another eastern route on the Azov Sea.

The US Navy destroyer USS Truxtun (DDG-103) crossed the Dardanelles Friday, as the vessel heads to the Black Sea for what the US Navy has described as a “routine” deployment that was purportedly scheduled well before the current crisis in Ukraine. It is expected to cross the Bosphorus and sail into Black Sea waters later Friday –

  19. Moscow – March 07 2014 – 14h10 – Over 65,000 people waving Russian flags and banners are attending a rally next to St Basil’s Cathedral in central Moscow, in a demonstration expressing solidarity with the pro-Russian authorities in the Ukrainian region of Crimea who want to join Russia, police said.

The rally, called “We are together”, began with Russian pop star Oleg Gazmanov singing a patriotic song called “Officers” and took place just outside the Kremlin walls.

  20. 4 December 2013 “European Union has no right to demand anything” – Marine Le Pen

French National Front leader Marine Le Pen gave an interview to the Russian newspaper ‘Vzglyad’ (‘View’), in which she stated that Brussels openly interfere in the sovereign affairs of Ukraine, which really does not need European integration.

First, I think that there is no point for Ukraine to join the European Union. Second, I think that there is no point for the EU either to continue its expansion while itself being on the brink of ruin and collapse.

[…]what surprises me is that the European Union declared the Ukrainian president illegitimate, relying on the opinion of just several thousand demonstrators. I find it all the more surprising since, as we remember, a million and a half Frenchmen took to the streets against Francois Hollande a year ago, but the European Union failed to accuse him of illegitimacy. If there are differences between part of the Ukrainian population and the president, they can be resolved through elections. But demanding the president’s early resignation just because of demonstrations – I find it strange. There were mass demonstrations in France last year, but no such demands were put forward.

[…]The most desirable way out of any political crisis is the elections. At least it solves the problem. In my opinion, if the process of diplomacy between the opposition and the parliamentary majority does not lead to the exit from the crisis, it is necessary to organize a referendum.

  21. Turkey: USS Taylor off to Crete for repairs after running aground

The USS Taylor (FFG-50) left the port of Samsun, Friday, for the Greek island of Crete to receive repairs to its hub and blades. The Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate ran aground on February 12 as it attempted to moor in the Turkish port. No injuries were sustained in the incident and the ship was later able to make it to the port’s dockside. Its commanding officer, Cmdr. Dennis Volpe, was relieved of his command some two weeks after the event.

The vessel was one of two US warships deployed to the Black Sea ahead of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games.
