Yemen is home to al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, believed by many analysts to be the most dangerous affiliate of the terror network.

5. Belgian authorities have arrested Younes Delefortrie, a young Belgian convert to Islam, who travelled to Syria just over a month ago

(That link might be tricky to navigate to. I had to back it up to English then search for the name, ‘Younes’)

6. Police: We understand why you don’t feel safe

  “There are zones within cities in which the citizens no longer feel safe, and rightly so,” Oliver Malchow, head of police union the GdP, told Der Spiegel magazine ahead of announcing the “safety alliance” launch on Monday.

The group will be tasked with figuring out how best to police areas with rising crime levels. This will likely include more officers on the street, increased CCTV presence, public alcohol bans and better protection for emergency services when called to incidents.

  1. French admiral: Libyan insecurity needs attention

    PARIS (AP) — France’s top military officer says he favors an international operation to battle a security “black hole” in southern Libya.

    Admiral Edouard Guillaud suggested that a lack of firm central authority in Tripoli has fostered lawlessness in the southern area and France doesn’t want it to become “the new center of gravity of terrorism.”

    Guillaud told reporters Monday that Libya remains an independent state and no international operation could happen without its government’s approval, “but we are looking.” He did not elaborate.

    French and other Western powers, which in 2011 helped topple Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi from power, have expressed concerns that the country’s south could become a new haven for international jihadist groups.

    Nothing very subtle there. I guess they don’t feel the need to be. I was confused when I started meeting Muslims from Texas some years ago, but apparently there are lots of them.
