  1. Sad Indeed

Though Communism in total has racked up a death count in less then a century roughly 1/3 of what islam has managed to accomplish in almost 1400 years (not without trying…) or 85-100 + million out under Communism compared with 270-300 million under islam, cannot help but wonder whether a fiercely secular Soviet-ruled Afghanistan would have been as bad as Taliban-ruled Afghanistan had the Soviets won?

The same question springs to mind on whether Iran as well would have been better off still under the Shah or even the Communists instead of the mullahs had the 1979 Islamic revolution never happened.

Who knows, perhaps in a Post-Communist scenario most of the Afghans, Iranians and others would end up abandoning islam like the Adjarans.

  2. For those “labour files.”

Decade of Labour ‘saw 50,000 too many die in hospital’: Figures show ‘abnormally high’ number of people died at 15 health trusts during time party was in power (dailymail, Nov 18, 2013)
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2509629/Decade-Labour-saw-50-000-die-hospital.html
“Up to 50,000 ‘excess’ deaths were recorded at hospitals during the last Labour government.

As ministers prepare to respond today to the report into the Mid Staffordshire scandal, figures suggest the number of fatalities was ‘abnormally high’ at 15 further health trusts.

The research – by Sir Brian Jarman of Imperial College, London – covers 2001 to 2010…”

  3. Lebanon blasts hit Iran’s embassy in Beirut (BBC, Nov 19, 2013)
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-24997876
“At least 15 people are reported to have been killed in two explosions which hit the Iranian embassy in the Lebanese capital Beirut in quick succession. The Iranian cultural attache was among the dead, Iran’s Arabic-language al-Alam TV channel reported. TV images showed burning cars, bodies on the street and damaged buildings. Iran is a major backer of the Lebanese Shia militant group Hezbollah, which has sent fighters to Syria to back the government of Bashar al-Assad….”

Iran was one of the best countries in the world before our left wing turned on them and paved the way for the Islamic revolution. Yes, there were torture chambers under the Shah, but you need torture chambers to deal with Islamic Jihadists. Ask any Iranian you see and they’ll tell you. Shah times were a hundred times better than now…

  5. Give Muslims paradise in any form and they will turn it into a complete sewer in just a few short years.

I get that though the Shah did not have long to live anyway, the question is how Iran could have forestalled the Islamic revolution long enough for the Soviet union to fall and whether the Shah’s successor would have been better off declaring a militantly secular constitutional monarchy.

Additionally, could the Shah (or his successor) have offered a few concessions to keep the domestic leftists quiet while launching a crackdown against the jihadists, perhaps even encourage the left to fight for the Soviets in Afghanistan or play on anti-arab feelings to launch a war against Iraq with the benefit of hindsight?

  7. Did you know that Afghan women are banned from owning property? It’s absolutely true: women in Afghanistan tribal areas do not and cannot inherit, which by the way, is a violation of the standard Islamic property law dictating that one third of the estate should go to the wife and daughters (as a group, of course, not much but at least it is something).

So the Taliban opposes the education of girls for reasons of “Islamic chastity” (supposedly),while at the same time denying them their Islamic property rights. Inconsistent?

Inconsistency is built into the Islamic system of thought. Since the Koran includes two contradictory versions of Islamic law, Meccan law and Medinan law, Muslims everywhere have grown to believe they must apply whichever version of the law benefits them the most in a given circumstance. This is their normal thought process and it is not inconsistent to them.

Which calls to mind Gilbert Keith Chesterton’s writings on “The Refusal of Reciprocity.” When describing the idiosyncrasy of the Prussian state before the advent of the great wars, he writes “The definition of the true savage is that he laughs when he hurts you; and howls when you hurt him.”

We better get ready for the next set of great wars…

  8. Somali African Union Beledweyne base hit by bomb attack (BBC, Nov 19, 2013)
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-24998892
“At least 19 people have been killed in a suicide attack on an African Union base in the Somali town of Beledweyne near Ethiopia’s border, officials say. A car rammed into the gates, exploded and gunmen then stormed the building. The BBC’s Mohammed Moalimu in Somalia says it is a base for Djiboutian troops and Somali policemen. An al-Shabab spokesman, Abdiasis Abu Musab, told the Reuters news agency that the al-Qaeda-linked group had carried out the attack…”

  9. Most Islamic countries are religious concentration camps cleverly disguised as nations with some form of civilian rule.

  10. Nate given what he has been doing since the death of the Shah his son would probably have ruled like his father did. No they couldn’t have reached an accommodation with the internal left, the internal left was busy working with the USSR to make Iran part of the USSR, and the expense of fighting in Afghanistan was partially why the USSR fell.

Second guessing history can be fun but the results would rarely have been what we imagine.
