A video work that was put on display at a former mosque at the Thessaloniki Biennial has caused controversy among Turks due to allegations of eroticism, resulting in its removal from the exhibition.

Although the Alaca ?mare Mosque is now closed to worship, local Muslims from the Eastern Macedonia-Thracian Muslims Education and Culture Association complained after the video from French artist Ange Leccia, titled “Nimfea,” was projected on the wall of the mosque, depicting a seemingly naked woman down to her chest.

In their complaint, the group said Greek authorities should respect religious sensitivities, even if Alaca ?mare is no longer used as a mosque.

  3. Russia bus blast by female suicide bomber

A female suicide bomber struck a passenger bus in the southern Russian city of Volgograd on Monday, killing five people and injuring 32 others, officials said.

The explosion was the first on a bus in Russia since a female suicide bomber blew herself up in 2008 in the North Caucasus, a region in southern Russia where an Islamic insurgency is simmering.

Volgograd is located about 650 kilometres to the northeast of the North Caucasus, but Monday’s bombing was certain to add to security fears ahead of the Winter Olympics in Sochi in February. Sochi sits to the west of the North Caucasus, along the Black Sea.
