1. Conviction upheld for Turkish scientist opposing headscarves

A Turkish astrophysicist faces two years of jail for forbidding access to a university building to a student wearing a headscarf. On Thursday, Ankara’s Supreme Court of Appeals upheld a lower court’s verdict against Esat Rennan Pekünlü, an astronomer at Ege University in Izmir.

3. Hundreds of men who took up arms against President Bashar al-Assad are defecting back to the government side. 

Disillusioned by the Islamist twist that the “revolution” in Syria has taken, exhausted after more than two years of conflict and feeling that they are losing, growing numbers of rebels are signing up to a negotiated amnesty offered by the Assad regime.

4. A spy plane equipped with a thermal imaging camera has found that more than 6,000 outbuildings in one town in the UK could be ‘beds in sheds’ converted by rogue landlords.

5. This is a subtle and complex story from the UK. But I think it reveals a lot that is wrong with governments relationship with information technology. This is not the usual post for this site other than perhaps being related to the NSA revelations in a way. But for those interested in law and technology etc. this deserves a read.

    Terrific stuff. Obviously, the range of the jet pack is limited, but it may of be use to Jihadis, specially in the Gaza.
