  1. What are the goals of the “war”?

Are we going to fight a war or a police action?

If we are going to fight are we going to fight to win?

If, I repeat if clear objectives are laid out and we fight the war to win rather then to win hearts and minds then I will tentatively support the intervention if only to prevent either the MB or Iran from winning a clear victory. What I am afraid of is that once again we will send the troops into harms way with ROEs that prevent them from acting in self defense or in winning the war.

  2. The US spent nearly a trillion dollars, lost thousands of soldiers, and Iraq is still in a bad state, surge or no surge.

The same, and possibly worse will happen in Syria. In fact much worse. Syria granted shelter to hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Christians who were driven out by the Iraq that we had set “free” from a dictator. If the US does the same in Syria, where will these Iraqi Christians, as well as Syrian Christians go?

I think Christians in the ME do not need any more “freedom” actions by the US. There is just so much of “freedom” a community can take before its expunged from the planet. Christians in Egypt are also feeling the effects of “freedom” that was set in effect by the West.

As an afterthought, no one in the West, including the US and the UK, granted asylum to fleeing Iraqi Christians. Maybe because their presence in the US and UK would have raised questions about the free Iraq we had setup.

I feel that Christians in the ME are right to ask why the US and the UK are waging war on them, as they seem to be the main victims.

  3. It could be that one of the unstated motivations is to prevent the jihadists from taking over after the war.

I’m thinking of the Spanish Civil War, Russian Revolution and the Islamist take over of Iran.

The soviets, after entering the Spanish Civil War on the side of the Republic, worked to destroy non communist factions even while the war was going on to ensure communists would be on top after the war ended.

After the Russian and Iranian revolutions the baddies took over while the new moderate governements were still shaky and weak.

Having feet on the ground in Syria might possibly prevent it from happening there.

I think that is a very good argument for getting involved – but it’s not one that could be discussed openly.

  4. During the Cold War we played these games and still won the war, I don’t think we can repeat this in the current war.

  5. Hell no.

    Senator McCain is a fool

    “Taliban Franchise Opens in Syria”

    http://sofrep.com/23344/taliban-franchise-opens-in-syria/

The Free Syrian Army, the good rebels, may join forces with Assad if Al Qaeda keeps attacking them. So where would that leave us little johny McCain.

McCain would not have gotten into the Naval Academy except that his daddy and grandpapa were admirals.

McCain pulled hotdogging stunts similar to those that killed the intalian skiers who died n a cable car after hotdogging U.S. pilots cut the cables by clipping them with their planes. McCain clipped power lines

McCain was a menace on the flight deck.

McCain divorced his wife because she was in a car accident and no longer pretty. So much for in sickness or in health. He then married a moneyed heiress.

The only thing he ever did right was to accept no special privileges as an admiral’s sonin the Hanoi prison. Good I admire him for that.

But that is the only bright spot in his whole life.

As much as I hate Assad, Hezbollah, Iran & Putin, McCain and other have no plan except for thud and blunder.

Pretty much if you do not win in 2 or 3 years you are training your enemy. We won’t go in with enough force, we won;t break enough heads. to make them fear us, or anything else.

Al Qaeda and others want it more than the FSA.So why should we help the FSA?

Beside Obama has already dragged his feet on the Iranian nuclear issue that they will have 6 or 7 bombs n 6 to 12 months (per his plan).

It would be best if we followed Winston Churchill’s advice and not get in the middle. But McCain is too vain and definitely not that smart. Look at his Naval Academy ranking.

The Islamists have already taken over Iran. If you mean Islamists of the Sunni variety, I do not see how that happens.

If Islamist control Egypt again or Jordan falls to the Islamists then the Sunni can link up and fight Shia in Syria, Iraq and Iran.

That is if they don’t attack Israel 1st. but if they have Jordan they could bypass it and then come back if they win.

  7. It was obvious, and I’m sure many on this site, that replacements to Mubarak, Libya etc, would not be a liberal democratic regime, but a choice between a military junta and fanatic Islam. In fact, in Islamic countries, the best option is a stable moderate dictatorship. What we now have are fanatic Salafist regimes in the above, where burning churches and killing Christians, beheading Christian priests, is koranically sanctioned.

Syria is the one country that has taken hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Christians when we “liberated” Iraq. It is one the few ME countries that has freedoms for religious minorities. Women are as free as they are in the West. America wants to replace this by Saudi Arab funded MB regime.

    Arius writes:

I can speak for the Armenians in Syria and can tell you that they are deathly afraid that the Syrian government will be overthrown by Muslim Brotherhood and Salafi connected groups. The Western media make no mention of churches being attacked and of Christians being massacred by the Islamist groups the West supports, but when they do mention it they blame it on the Syrian government!

It is strange indeed when I, a staunch anti-Communist American-Armenian during the Cold War, now support Russia and China drawing a line in the sand against the West attacking the Syrian government.

The U.S. government is aiding and assisting the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafis coming to power in multiple countries in the Middle East. This is the biggest strategic blunder by the West since the 1500s, along with Europe’s Euro-Arab Dialog which over the past 40 years has opened Europe to mass Muslim invasion. I spent most of my life believing in Western civilization but near the end of my life I see the West for what it has become — ignorant, deceptive, propelled by self-hatred, digging its own grave. It is no longer worthy of its inheritance.

  8. Alexander Solzhenitsyn

at Harvard Class Day Afternoon Exercises,

However, in early democracies, as in American democracy at the time of its birth, all individual human rights were granted because man is God’s creature. That is, freedom was given to the individual conditionally, in the assumption of his constant religious responsibility. Such was the heritage of the preceding thousand years. Two hundred or even fifty years ago, it would have seemed quite impossible, in America, that an individual could be granted boundless freedom simply for the satisfaction of his instincts or whims. Subsequently, however, all such limitations were discarded everywhere in the West; a total liberation occurred from the moral heritage of Christian centuries with their great reserves of mercy and sacrifice. State systems were becoming increasingly and totally materialistic. The West ended up by truly enforcing human rights, sometimes even excessively, but man’s sense of responsibility to God and society grew dimmer and dimmer. In the past decades, the legalistically selfish aspect of Western approach and thinking has reached its final dimension and the world wound up in a harsh spiritual crisis and a political impasse. All the glorified technological achievements of Progress, including the conquest of outer space, do not redeem the Twentieth century’s moral poverty which no one could imagine even as late as in the Nineteenth Century.

A decline in courage may be the most striking feature that an outside observer notices in the West today. The Western world has lost its civic courage . . . . Such a decline in courage is particularly noticeable among the ruling and intellectual elite, causing an impression of a loss of courage by the entire society.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn, even from the grave, skewers the liberal paradigm, and shows that we’re heading towards the self-destruction of the West, tracing its start to WWII and the Vietnam war.

Please read it, it is well worth the trouble.

  9. To put the answer in country slang, we don’t have a dog in that fight. We have no vital interest in the fight and our interference will only make the situation worse. This is a war between two sects of a religion, anything we do will make both sects hate us more.
