Walking dogs in public or driving them around in cars is set to be banned in Iran.

Now dog owners fear their pets will be ‘arrested’ if they are caught in public and they could also face a fine.

It is the latest attempted crackdown on dogs in the country, where the animals are viewed as unclean.

In 2011, authorities threatened to criminalise dog ownership and said the growing popularity of keeping the pets ‘poses a cultural problem, blind imitation of the vulgar Western culture’.

Deputy police chief Ahmad Reza Radan told the Fars news agency that they ‘will confront those who walk their dogs in the streets. Cars carrying dogs will also be impounded.’

  1. If the reason for this new edict is the potential “seduction powers” of dogs towards muslim men, put a chador on them, problem fixed.

More seriously, I am not against muslims not holding dogs – they would probably raise a killer breed and use them on kuffars.

  2. Persians used to be real dog lovers before Mohammed decided that he didn’t like dogs and chose to ban them. I guess he got tired of being snarled at as he went from tent-to-tent, intimidating people. I suspect that those dogs could sense their masters’ fear and growled accordingly. Mohammed was a very scary guy…

  3. You can judge the character of a person by how they treat animals, the Moslems show they are lower then worms.

  4. The measure is an inadequate reaction to the alleged concern with dogs’ anti-family implications. Of course, dogs can and do bring families together, in many moments of joy, or as topics of conversation, so the premise is dubious.

However, how many lonely people in England, rather than opting to find a human companion, settle for a canine companion? That this substitute does not lead to procreation and family, and a reduction in the population, might be a national concern.
