Conference of European Rabbis laments law forcing observant Jews to carry identity documents on Shabbat.

Talk about a specious comparison. I bet the Dutch laws also require people to wear pants.  The Nazis required people to wear pants! Oy Gevalt the Dutch are Nazis!

I despise this kind of comparison for the purpose of gaining privilege. It is as if I as a Canadian felt that I had a right to live under Canadian law when living in Holland. Sorry guys. If you want to have Jewish law go live in Israel. If indeed the Israelis allow you to wander around on the sabbath with no I.D.

I am tempted to ask why carrying ID is work and not walking all over the place but I have learned not to try arguing with religious people or unmedicated schizophrenics. Reason is not part of the equation, or rather, the reasoning is highly proprietary. But as my good friend Tundra T points out, if the orthodox Jews can invent a work-around to allow greater mobility for their community in Australia by putting a wire around the community to create an imaginary yes-go zone, then maybe they can wear a little wire halo that lets them be inside the ‘carry-ID zone wherever they happen to be. Or perhaps they can pretend that inside the halo it’s still Friday night.

The Conference of European Rabbis on Thursday compared a Dutch law that requires citizens to carry their identity cards at all times to restrictions placed on Jews by the Nazi regime in Germany.

The current controversy stems from a decision by an appeals court in The Hague which ruled this week that there is no religious exemption for Orthodox Jews that would allow them to refrain from carrying their identity documents on Shabbat, when transporting objects outdoors is prohibited under Halacha (Jewish law).

  1. They didn’t try to be superior and didn’t try to be above the law. Nor did they try a run around or fiddling with the rules. They followed the normal procedure necessary in order to reconcile state law and their interpretation of their religion.

And this procedure did just that. According to Judaism the laws of the state trump religious rules. They have to carry ID and they will.

In many states there is no law saying you have to carry ID or that you have to show it to police when asked.

Compare that to the islamic attitude toward laws of the state.

The real story is that we all know there won’t be more to this story. No riots, no bombings, no assassinations, It won’t be used to incite violent resentments or as a phoney casus belli for Israel.

It will be a man doesn’t bite dog story.

  2. HOWEVER there is a more interesting story hidden in plain sight here.

-In a great many American states there isn’t a law demanding you have ID on your preson ever. Furthermore you don’t have to show it to the police. Notice that police often word their request to see your ID as “do you have ID?” or similar, and it’s never worded as a command.

So they might have ended up with more rights than the other Europian prols, but not more rights than what Americans take for granted. And they’d still end up with less rights than us for the other 6 days of the week.

-The cops can haul you down to the station and keep you there until they can identify you or someone else can confirm who you are.

so they are in fact arguing for a rule that would have the result of making life less convenient for them compared to others.

    I agree with Truthiocity here.

And personally I can actually understand the nervousness of Jews in Holland and Scandinavian countries, and I will make many more concessions to their fundamental religious beliefs than I would to islam, since they will never try to force me to join them, let alone “submit”.

  4. I think the thing that is a little more disconcerting here is the fact that countries like Holland require ID at all times to begin with. I guess they figure that at any time, a gang of faceless “asian youths” could set upon you and beat you until your unidentifiable.

And as others pointed out, there will be no more story after this. If it was a muslim making the request, they would have bent over backwards in a nanosecond to meet their demands, lest they riot and destroy everything in sight.

  5. @Adam

Yes, muslims easily outrank religious Jews. Jews who fear they will be next after muslims should understand that maybe not Jews, but (non-muslim) Anti-Semites will be next.

  6. Jewish orthodox religionists love to whine about every non-issue they perceive as contrary to their weird dogmatic beliefs. Sure, they aren’t likely to start rioting and blowing shit up, but secular Israelis like me still have to oppose these annoying crackpots all the time. Fortunatelly, we (secularists) are a dominant majority in Israel and our opposition to the irrational demands of the fundies only strengthens with time.

  7. With a name like Kafir Ibn al-Shaitan you are a liar and illiterate. There are Orthodox Jews, there are Jewish Religionists and there are Orthodox Relgionist Jews. You aren’t a secular Israeli. They don’t whine and wouldn’t name themselves after a milk product (Kafir). In your case your milk toast.

Eeeyore, you Royalist nut, what do you care about how someone practices their religion. Are you sayng that people HAVE to conform to what the big mommy government says about how someone practices their religion. This is pre-Cromwell crap. If the Canadian Governement mandated (not in a war situation)that you HAD to buy a passport to travel between provinces. That you had to show it at checkpoint and you could only travel to those checkpoints. Would you be a little peeved? Or if you had to show the same passport before you went into your favorite House of Worship. I don’t know about you but, its Cromwell Time!

  8. Doc H:

I may or may not be peeved. (I kind of wish that was the case with Quebec actually) but I would not say Look! The government are NAZIS! The Nazis made me carry ID and now the Ontario govt is! Thats NAZI!

I dislike intensely that particular false comparison. It does a lot of harm, not the least of which is making the comparison weak when in fact it is appropriate.

That was my point, not the law itself.
