On women in and under Islam

By Asaad Alepti, Australian Coptic rights activist.

There has been much debate about the status of women in Islam. Much of that debate surrounded the mandatory covering of women in rags called “Burqas”. Opponents of the burqa argue the clothing is demeaning and a religious sanctioned symbol of male supremacy. France was the first country to protect Muslim women by legislating a ban on public wearing of the burqa contesting “women are ‘effectively under house arrest’. French politicians recognised the imposition placed on Muslim women by the dominating males in the family and acted to protect the “gender equality” and “dignity” of women.

The French position is vindicated when you witness the horrors emerging under the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. In a derogatory vile attack on the dignity of women and their status in society, Egyptian Islamic cleric, Mohammed Abdullah, said women who go to protests “were going there to get raped.”

That comment sums up perfectly and corroborates the numerous arguments that women are treated as virtual slaves and sexual objects in Islamic teachings.

It is frustrating to witness the ignorance of western Muslim women that reject the latter, their ignorance is a major disservice to Muslim women struggling for equality in Islamic countries. The ignorance also serves to confirm these women know little or nothing about Islamic teachings concerning women.

In Egypt, the women are fed up, they have had enough of the public ridicule by clerics and their abandonment by the Muslim Brotherhood who refuse to enact laws to enshrine quality of the sexes and criminalise sexual attack and rape. The Egyptian women have taken matters into their own hands, “At marches against sexual harassment in Cairo, women have brandished kitchen knives in the air. Stenciled drawings on building walls depict girls fighting off men with swords. Signs threaten to “cut off the hand” of attackers”

To understand why a society like Egypt, political groups like the Muslim Brotherhood and Islamic clerics are oppressing women in a manner that appears totally acceptable to them, you must visit the teaching of their prophet Mohammed. Below are a sample of Islamic teachings attributed to Mohammed, to the non Muslim they are vulgar, outrageous, demeaning and explain why Islamic men feel they must “control and regulate” everything their women do.

To assist in the liberation and equality of women please publish, forward this email, together we can raise awareness of the core reasons as to why Islamic women are treated on a par to animals.

Mohammed’s teachings are included in what is called “Hadith.” The “Hadith” is a record of Mohammed’s words and deeds Next to the Quran, it is the most important text in Islamic law; its teachings are just as binding. The following quotes are from “Sahih Al-Bukhari”, (Al Bukhari is accepted as the authentic words of Mohammed).

The purpose in highlighting the following examples is twofold –

Firstly to provide a voice to the voiceless and powerless women subjugated under Islam.

Secondly to empower the non Muslim reader by providing a basic understanding 1600 years of Islamic teachings and their consequence on those society. An understanding of Islam will allow any person to counter the distorted propaganda Muslim advocates use to propagate Islamic teachings. Any person “selling Islam” will always omit to mention any teachings they are fully aware are diametrically opposed to enshrined rights that both genders enjoy in secular societies. The abhorrent incidents of sexual assault and rape since the fall of Mubarak, the justification of rape by Islamic clerics by blaming the women and the blatant inaction and unwillingness of the Muslim brotherhood all speak for its self.

Some of the sayings and teachings listed below will shock those with no knowledge of the true teachings of Islam, and explain the impossible struggle all women face in Islamic countries.

Women are deficient in mind and religion.

o        Mohammed asked some women, “Isn’t the witness of a woman equal to half that of a man?” The women said, “yes,”He said, “This is because of the deficiency of the woman’s mind.  Vol. 3:826

o        Mohammed to women: “I have not seen any one moredeficient in intelligence and religion than you.” Vol. 2:541

The majority of people in hell are women.

o        Mohammed said, “I was shown the Hell-fire and that the majority of its dwellers are women.  Vol. 1:28, 301; Vol. 2:161; Vol. 7:124

Women are a bad omen.

o        Mohammed said, ” Bad omen is in the woman, the house and the horse.” Vol. 7:30

Women are harmful to men.

o        Mohammed said, “After me I have not left any affliction more harmful to men than women.” Vol. 7:33

Women may not wear wigs.

o        Mohammed said, “Don’t wear false hair for Allah sends His curse upon such ladies who lengthen their hair artificially.Vol. 7:133

2.    The Primary role of women is SEX

Mohammed’s sexual strength is equal to 30 men.

  • Anas said, “The prophet used to visit all his wives in an hour round, during the day and night and they were eleven in number.” I asked Anas, “Had the prophet the strength for it?” Anas replied, “We used to say that the prophet was given the strength of thirty (men). ” Vol. 1:268

Mohammed married a 9 year old girl.

o        “Narrated Aisha that the prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old.”Vol. 7:64

Allah hurries to please Mohammed’s sexual desires.

o        When the Quranic verse that allows Mohammed to postpone the turn of any wife was revealed, and when Mohammed said that Allah allowed him to marry his adopted son’s wife, Aisha (one of his wives) told him, “O Allah’s Apostle I do not see but that your Lord hurries in pleasing you.  Vol. 7:48

When a woman is divorced, she can not return to her husband until she marries and has sexual intercourse with another man.

o        “Narrated Aisha: The wife of Rifaa Al-Qurazi came to Allah’s Apostle and said, ‘O Allah’s Apostle, Rifaa divorced me irrevocably. After him I married Abdur-Rahman bin Az-Zubair Al-Qurazi who proved to be impotent.’ Allah’s Apostle said to her, ‘Perhaps you want to return to Rifaa? Nay (You cannot return to Rifaa) until you and Abdur-Rahman (the impotent man) engage in sexual intercourse!” Vol. 7:186

Tabari IX:113 “Allah permits you to shut them in separate rooms and to beat them, but not severely. If they abstain, they have the right to food and clothing. And give the women their dower as a free gift; but if they, of their own good pleasure, remit any part of it to you, eat it with enjoyment, take it with right good cheer and absorb it (in your wealth).”

The Prophet observed: ‘You curse too much and are ungrateful to your spouses. You lack common sense, fail in religion and rob the wisdom of the wise.’ Upon this the woman remarked: What is wrong with our common sense? The Prophet replied, ‘Your lack of common sense can be determined from the fact that the evidence of two women is equal to one man. That is a proof.'”
Qur’an 2:282 “And get two witnesses out of your own men. And if there are not two men (available), then a man and two women [a man is worth two women, and one man is always needed], such as you agree for witnesses, so that if one of them (two women) errs, the other can remind her.”
Qur’an 4:43 “Believers, approach not prayers with a mind befogged or intoxicated until you understand what you utter. Nor when you are polluted, until after you have bathed. If you are ill, or on a journey, or come from answering the call of nature, or you have touched a woman, and you find no water, then take for yourselves clean dirt, and rub your faces and hands. Lo! Allah is Benign, Forgiving.” [The Qur’an claims women are unclean and polluted – worse than dirt.]

3 Replies to “On women in and under Islam”

  1. Very interesting article. One should send multiple copies to the Australian Greens (and Labor, and our media) which are over populated by islamophile, anti-western females and one should highlight this passage:

“…It is frustrating to witness the ignorance of western Muslim women that reject the latter, their ignorance is a major disservice to Muslim women struggling for equality in Islamic countries….”

Because here, and even more so in France, we have quite a number of “converts” who think it’s ever so kewl to wear these offensive rugs on their heads. Yes, I say France, because, despite the “Law” against wearing burkas in public places, it is not followed, and not enforced. Especially since the rabidly left/socialist government arrived in power.

  2. Some At-Tabari hadiths are discounted among Sunni Muslims but explain a lot about the prejudices against women among early Muslims.
The hadiths from at-Tabari is a collection of all sayings related to an event placed in chronological order of occurrence and are only as good as the chain of narrators. So even though these hadiths are saved, written, and read becoming part of the Muslim collective psyche the more objectionable ones are explained away as weak or fabricated.

“Allah said, ‘It is My obligation to make Eve bleed once every month as she made this tree bleed. I must also make Eve stupid, although I created her intelligent.’ Because Allah afflicted Eve, all of the women of this world menstruate and are stupid.” [Tabari I:280]

Addressing those western Muslim females who believe that Islam came to liberate and give rights to women 1400 years ago: Take a moment to consider that even if we grant that some objectionable hadiths are weak and Sunni scholars as a whole avoid using them as evidence for their opinions, what does it imply about the opinions of the earlier Muslim generations regarding women? Remember these are supposedly the strongest of those with Taqwah (fear of Allah/faith) and the most knowledgeable. So if these are the kinds of traditions that were being submitted to collectors by Allah fearing individuals as sound teachings of Muhammed, should we then ignore the weaker more radical ones and accept only the Disney dawah versions of hadiths like the ones that declare Heaven to be at the feet of mothers? No, these weaker hadiths should not be discounted but instead seen as collective evidence including the whole of the hadith, Qur’an verses, and the reality of the experiences of women in Muslim countries to gain a clear understanding on women in an under Islam. Sunni Muslims today are returning to early interpretations of Islam and following as closely as possible the ways of the Salaf. And the countless stories coming out of these countries are clear that a women’s situation is worsened under their ridged unbend-able laws. Oppression occurs in every culture and country across the globe but when religion is used as justification it is a painful and deeply tradgic that women become promoters and submitters to an ideology that puts enmity between man and woman.
Using weaker hadiths can give a writer less credit among muslim readers and is less effective in reaching out to them. Although, when they are considered along with the many other sound but objectionable quotes the weaker narrations serve as vital clues to the reality of early muslim beliefs, prejudices and the collective psyche that was produced and perverted by Islamic ideology among the best of Muslim generations. And the collection of quotes listed above does not even begin to include the many hadiths and ayahs that contribute to the fear of Allah and his punishments in HELL which serve to keep the Muslim woman in check despite the hurtful and oppressive traditions.

  3. No matter what we think, Muslim men understand that women have no intelligence and may need to be beaten when they stray. Allah told them so.

And the vast majority of Musliminas would not dream of complaining. They will tell you of their pride in their protected status.
