Voice of the people: Rachel Bull spoke out on the BBC's Question TimeVoice of the people: Rachel Bull spoke out on the BBC’s Question Time

When she arrived at Lincoln Drill Hall for BBC1’s Question Time last Thursday, Rachel Bull took a seat towards the back of the audience, never imagining that she would speak during the live television debate.

At first, 35-year-old Mrs Bull listened quietly to the panellists discussing issues such as the future of the High Street and the scandal of supermarket burgers contaminated with horse meat.

But when the topic shifted to immigration in her family’s home town, Boston in Lincolnshire, she found she could remain silent no longer.

After hearing Cambridge University professor Mary Beard airily dismissing claims that migrant workers were overwhelming the market town, office manager Mrs Bull almost leapt from her seat, waving her hand frantically in the air until she caught the attention of presenter David Dimbleby.

‘Boston is at breaking point. All the locals can’t cope any more,’ she said, her voice trembling with emotion and outrage. ‘You go down to Boston High Street and it’s just like you’re in a foreign country. It’s got to stop. The services are at breaking point.’

When she finally finished speaking, there was a moment’s silence and then rapturous applause.

In less than a minute, this ordinary working mother had given a snapshot picture of a town at the end of its tether and voiced the fears of huge swathes of the population.

After the show had finished, audience members were still feting Mrs Bull like a heroine, shaking her hand and congratulating her for daring to speak out about the lasting impact of mass immigration.

  1. Mary Beard said after the 9/11 jihad attack that “the United States had it coming” and that terrorism was associated with American foreign policy.— Only in the BBC folks.

  2. Arthur that is very similar to what Ron Paul said.

These so called libertarians (not Ayn Rand) wouldn’t know what an enemy was until they themselves are bleeding on the floor from an attack

  3. OxAO you are right, I have a neighbor that is otherwise intelligent but he thinks if we pull all of our people home and ignore the world it will ignore us.

  4. She only said what we all know to be the truth, she had a National Platform and she took her chance to speak the truth, the M.P’s won’t like what she said because they all duck the issue, but they don’t live in the same World as we do,they don’t have to run to the Shops for Milk or Newspapers at Night, they turn a Blind eye to what is happening outside, they don’t even live where this Lady lives so it does’nt bother them directly, maybe that’s what it’s got to take, when their “Silver Lyfestyle” is upset, upturned, and threatened on a Daily basis the, and ONLY THEN will they act,so the more People like this Lady speaks out the quicker they will get the message, and the message is,”Get these Bastards away from our Doors”, before something serious happens, whichever Political Party take up her plight is on a definite winner for Votes, and not just where she lives, they have a habit of moving a problem from one place to another,WE WANT RID OF THE PROBLEM,and not moved on to another Area.

  5. Whilst I agree that you have an immigration problem in this country, I don’t think that this is your main problem. Your main problem is the disintegration of the family unit and the loveless binge drinking environment that your children are growing up in! NEVER in my life have I seen another country where people so seldom give their children a hug and a kiss like in this country and NEVER in my life have I seen another country where there are so many children from different fathers growing up in single parent households! Before you tackle the immigration problem (at least the immigrants LOVE their kids) you should first look at yourselves!

Ed is very proud of his comprehensive school because students were speaking 60 languages. After leaving school, all those who spoke different languages, could only speak English because there is no arrangement for them to learn their own languages at school. Even teachers discouraged them to speak their language in school. British schooling regards bilingualism as a problem and not an asset. Sadiq was the product of British schooling. He is very proud that he is unable to speak, read and write Urdu language. I do not blame him. It is the fault of the school.

Multiculturalism is not about integration but about cultural plurality. It is not about separation but about respect and the deepening awareness of Unity in Diversity. Each culture will maintain its own intrinsic value and at the same time would be expected to contribute to the benefit of the whole society. Multiculturalism can accommodate diversity of all kinds – cultural, philosophical and religious – so that we can create a world without conflict and strife. Britain can assume the role of accommodation and concern for all peoples, for our planet and indeed for our survival. Multi-culturalism is even more important and crucial after 9/11 and 7/7. Muslim youths are also likely to feel alienated by a focus on shared Brutishness, rather than multicultural diversity. Rather than promoting a single British “us” teaching should acknowledge that “us” can be diverse and plural. Children should be encouraged to explore differences in appearance, history and religion to reduce social and educational fears.

It is the democratic right of every Muslim parent to see that their children receive balanced education, so that when their children grow up, they do not find themselves cut off from their cultural roots and linguistic skills. It is a question of common sense, humanity and reason that bilingual Muslim children must be educated in state funded Muslim schools with bilingual Muslim teachers as role models during their developmental periods. The whole world believes that people who speak more than one language is a vital economic asset. Pupils who speak more than one language do not cause difficulties. There are hundreds of state and church schools where Muslim children are in majority. In my opinion, all such schools may be opted out as Muslim Academies.
